Hi -Thanks for your concern.

Our NJ governor Christi had a press conference and said he noticed that people were still on our beaches. He was really ticked off and said "Get the hell off the beaches, it's 4:30 and you've optimized your tans".

He also said that people were allowed to take their pets to the shelter, and he said "I don't believe I'm saying this, but if you have a cat take the litter and pooper scooper with you".

You have to admit, we from New Jersey don't mince our words. RFOL

I wonder if anybody here would know, with winds over 85 MPH blowing out windows, would it help if the window was open a little bit? Just curious. Thanks.

I would be afraid that you'll get water damage inside the house. I've seen people criss-cross like an X and a + with duct tape. Not really sure which tape, but the kind that you'll be able to take off afterwards. Not sure if it needs to be done outside. The news coverage always showed people standing out side.



After North Carolina, if Irene takes a turn to the East, the ocean water will bring it back up to a hurricane. If it stays on land, than yes, it will just stay a tropical storm, but there are always chances of tornados from the wind gusts. This is a really HUGE/WIDE storm as it covers a VAST majority of space.



East coast people, do a check in when you can. Depending on how Irene travels up the coast, the whole state of NJ and parts of Pennsylvania might get hit hard, too. Some schools don't start until after Labor Day, but some start next week. LOL, already days off - maybe.



Katie - I know you are in a new location now, but are you close to the huge typhoon in the Pacific. Forgot its name. I know Tiwain (sp) is suppose to get hit hard. Don't know if I heard the news correctly, but this is suppose to be bigger than Irene. BTW, Katie, do you or anyone happen to know why in the Pacific they are called typhoons, but in the Atlantic its a hurrican?

Thanks patty, I looked it up and Google said double pane glass is best. My windows have that.

Tropical revolving storms are called Hurricanes in the Atlantic and on the American side of the Pacific Ocean. They can form in both the northern and southern hemispheres.

They are called Typhoons in the northwest Pacific Ocean, particularly the area of the South China Sea. They are limited to the northern hemisphere

They are called Tropical Cyclones in the Indian Ocean and in the south west Pacific. They can occur in the northern hemisphere in the Indian ocean.

Those countries that use the term Tropical Cyclone, such as Australia, often drop the word "Tropical" so Cyclone means Tropical Cyclone.

The only difference between hurricanes and a tropical cyclones is where they form in the world.

One of my roommates came back, she doesn't think it's going to be serious so she open all the windows and didn't get her plants inside...we'll see. I'd rather be prepared than underestimate the power of nature.

I saw one report that said they are now saying the flooding from the storm surge will be the major impact over the Northeast. Either way, stay safe and keep us updated.

Louis, I'd tell your roommate if she cares about her plants she'd better get them inside. Irene is set to hit here in NJ as a category 1 and is heading up the coast in the same cat. People are boarding up their homes in Mass. Four ft. flooding in some parts of NC. It's going to be a wild ride.

It's always better to be safe than sorry! Batten down the hatches but do not be afraid, just cautious! Please bring the plants in. Too much water can suffocate them unless they have great drainage. Or VERY large pots.

Here we go!!!! It just started raining very lightly. Talk to you again hopefully sometime soon.

The storm is supposed to start tonight in NJ and so last minute good wishes to everyone on the east coast. Going to turn my computer off in case we get a power surge.

Good morning everybody. Irene is on her way to New York now and is pretty much over in NJ. We will have river flooding later in river areas later today. Unfortunate for residents. Central Jersey didn't do too bad, mainly rain (so much rain) and winds weren't too bad here.

My best wishes for east coast resident not yet hit.

My friend lives by a river and it's pretty certain she's going to lose her basement again like she did with Hurricane Floyd in '99.

I live on the third floor and the county I live in has minor flooding warnings. I hear ambulances passing near our building. Hopefully, it is nothing major going on in the area.



I am more concerned with my friends in CT. Haven't heard from them yet. My friends in NY evacuated, so I know they are fine.



ps: I should probably try the hurricane drink one of my roommates prepared later in the day, lol.

To those who might be affected by hurricane Irene I just wanted to say that I keep everybody in my prayers and hope that you will stay safe!

Thanks everyone for your prayers and concern. We are fine but others around us are not as lucky. Massive power outages(we lost it twice but it came back on) lots of flooding, many highways closed because of down trees. It is still very windy here but the rain has stopped. The east coast has really had its share of weather this week. First an earthquake and four days later Irene. :sunny:that's the forecast for tomorrow. Can't wait.

We haven't heard anything from pattygirl today. I guess she's still in NM. She may have had travel plans interrupted by Irene. I miss her everyday chats.

I think she hadn't planned on coming home until today, right? Hopefully her travel plans weren't messed up too much.

Hi girls! Yes, still in NM. Have checked in with my kids, most okay. Don't know about one in CT - no phone. Gonna try today again.



Hope travel plans not changed. Really want to get home. Wedding was great. Never saw granddaughter so happy. Everybody had a ball. The day was wonderful.



Gonna check boarding passes now. Hope nothing's changed. Will be home tomorrow if all okay. Don't know what I'm coming home to. Keeping fingers crossed.

South Jersey along the Delaware River got hit hard. My mom didn't lose power, but water in the basement, which I feel bad she's on her own. I forgot to mention here prior to Irene, always a good idea to fill your bathtub with water. If water is shut off, use this water to sponge bath and/or flush toilet.



Glad everyone got through okay!!

I'm going to my daughter's house tomorrow and overnight. They (she and husand Dave) already have guests there who are friends. The couple live in Allentown, NJ and their building actually got condemned from the flood. She and Dave have a "guest suite" in their house where the couple will be staying.

Sounds like a full house and a fun time for all.

Hey, girls! I'm back! Got home about 7:30 pm. Had great flight home, son picked me up at a/p. Home in one piece, lost part of a Lilac Bush. Nothing major. No water.



Missed all George news. Gonna take me forever to read all the talk in all the threads and gossip cop, etc. Also missed Enterainment Tonight piece tonite on George. Damn. Gonna see if I can find online.
