George Clooney film crew keeps Cincinnati abuzz

Clooney: "Ides of March" at Head First Cafe: George Clooney's "Ides of March" shoots downtown. Producer: Stacy Doose.

Of all places in town, George Clooney decided to shoot scenes for "The Ides Of March" last week in a couple of bars: The Stand in Mount Lookout and Head First Sports Café downtown.

"The Stand was chosen because it had the right look and feel of a lounge," says film publicist Tracey Schaefer. "But also looked as if it could be part of a motel."

Clooney directed scenes inside the club Tuesday morning, as production trucks clogged Mount Lookout Square traffic outside.

It's the fourth movie directed by the Oscar-winning actor from Augusta High School, and the first film he's shot around his hometown.

Based on his itinerary last week, "The Ides of March" will show off some iconic area landmarks - and some off-beat locations.

Clooney's crew shot inside the Hilton Cincinnati Netherland Plaza downtown, Lunken Airport terminal and Xavier University's Cintas Center.

But they also spent 1½ days at the Third Street sports bar. Cameras focused all Tuesday afternoon on actor Ryan Gosling, the main character, and a blue compact car.

Gosling plays an aggressive first-time campaign staffer for a Democratic governor (Clooney) who's running in the presidential primaries.

More scenes were shot Thursday inside Head First with Paul Giamatti, who plays a rival campaign manager.

Spectators also saw actress Marisa Tomei, who portrays a New York Times reporter, and Gosling late Thursday afternoon filming on Fourth Street between Race and Plum streets.

Evan Rachel Wood, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Jeffrey Wright and Max Minghella also co-star in the film.

Clooney will shoot here three or four weeks.

Twenty-six area locations were scheduled to be used, the local film commission announced last month.

About 1,500 extras will be needed for filming here, before production moves to Michigan late next month, Schaefer says. More than 23,000 people responded to a casting call announcement issued last month, she says.

Ohio and Michigan have approved state tax incentives for the production.

Nice caricature to add to Katie's collection...

Ah, you guys underestimate our George's energy levels! When he directed and acted (and wrote!) confessions of a dangerous mind, he had not one but two girlfriends on the go at the time (Maria and Krista).

George Clooney still the same good guy

CINCINNATI - He was sitting at an unadorned banquet table with young members of the film crew, posing for pictures with others who gained entrance to the inner sanctum. Though that isn't a fair portrayal of George Clooney's lunch break during filming of "The Ides of March".

That would suggest a phalanx of security personnel and assorted body men, assigned to keep the public at bay.

As I approached Memorial Hall, scene of Tuesday's work, an acquaintance on the production staff asked, "You seen George yet? He's right inside eating lunch." Which I took as an invitation to go inside.

Where I found him at the aforementioned table, catching up with Pete Harpen, his grade school chum from when the Clooneys lived in Mason. Harpen recognized me but George, who hasn't laid eyes on me since I had dark hair and a mustache needed a second take. He jumped up and gave me a bear hug, nearly toppling the UC hat he was wearing.

It wasn't long before Clooney asked about the Bearcats: "Are they gonna make it? I know they had that nice win over Louisville but will that be enough?" Clooney is an old 'hooper' himself in case you didn't know. In fact he severely sprained an ankle on the set of I believe it was "ER" years ago. That slowed him down sufficiently that a limp had to be written into the script.

We moved on to the Reds prospects for 2011 and he was ecstatic to hear of Bob Castellini's determination to return a consistent winner to the Tri-State. Clooney has more than a passing interest in the baseball. He went so far as to attend a Reds tryout camp many years ago but was apprised of some shortcomings; speed, power and arm strength.

Of course his mom and dad, Nina and Nick came up, along with his sister Ada and her children, George's niece and nephew. The former being a source of consternation because of what we'll term an unconventional academic arc.

To think that a man at the center of a major film production, surrounded by literally hundreds of professionals going about the business of making a feature length motion picture, is sitting with a grade school pal, expressing concern about his niece speaks volumes to the kind of guy George is.

He said it's great to be back in the area and able to navigate its traffic intricacies with the deft knowledge of a near native. One of whom we should all be very proud and for reasons beyond his notoriety but which have been facilitated by that fame. I thanked him for his commitment to making things better with his efforts in the Sudan, for bringing the "Ides" production to Cincinnati and finally for the warm hospitality extended someone he hasn't seen in 20 years.

My uncanny sense of timing goaded me into taking my leave. "George, I'll let you get back to work. All the best to you and your family" "DJ, great to see you, thanks for stopping by", he replied.

What went unsaid by me was "George, it is wonderful to see that you haven't changed a bit."

Clooney movie filming at Fountain Square

CINCINNATI, OH (FOX19) - George Clooney and his film crew are shooting scenes for his new movie, "The Ides of March."

Wednesday morning, Clooney was sighted behind the camera directing Ryan Gosling on Fountain Square in front of the Fifth Third Center.

Gosling was shooting a scene on the telephone at a Cincinnati Bell phone booth. Co-star Paul Giamatti was also there, he spent time staying warm with some of the film's extras at Mynt Martini.

A crew member tells FOX19 they are headed to the Party Source in Northern Kentucky to shoot Wednesday afternoon. Next week the movie will head to Butler County to shoot scenes at Miami University.

No Lunch With Clooney On Fountain Square

If you planned to take spend your lunch hour watching George Clooney shoot his movie on Fountain Square today, you’re out of luck. He’s gone.

Clooney shot several scenes for “The Ides of March” this morning with star Ryan Gosling in the northeast corner of the square, near Potbelly Sandwich Shop. The Oscar-winning actor, who stars and directs in the film, oversaw filming from 8:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m.

Again Clooney was the main attraction, despite Gosling and Oscar-nominated actor Paul Giamatti being on the set. Many of the 75 people gathered on the outskirts of the square strained to take photos of Clooney with their cell phones and cameras.

Gosling plays the main character, a press aide to a Democratic governor (Clooney) campaigning in the presidential primaries.

Most scenes were of Gosling on a pay phone — a pay phone?? — that was installed specifically for the movie. (Duh!) Extras walked through the square and a half dozen people skated on the ice rink in the background.

All of the actors, crew, trucks and no parking signs were gone by 11:15 a.m.

Clooney to film on Green Beer Day

George Clooney's film The Ides of March will be shooting on campus March 1 to 3.

According to Scott Walter, adviser for Miami's Associated Student Government, the shoot for Thursday, March 3 will require 500 to 600 extras and students are encouraged to participate. Walter stressed that any potential extras wearing Green Beer Day shirts will absolutely not be allowed on set.

Locations and times of filming are not yet known.

Clooney has been seen on campus once since November, when he made his first visit to scout filming locations.

According to the Internet Movie Database (IMDB), The Ides of March centers around a presidential candidate who is introduced to the realm of dirty politics while campaigning. The film is directed by Clooney and will star himself, Ryan Gosling and Marisa Tomei.

The Ides of March is loosely based on the 2004 candidacy of Howard Dean.

Clooney filming brings out his Ohio hometown fans

CINCINNATI — Nothing like a chance to see hometown hero George Clooney up close to warm a freezing morning.

Dozens of fans stood for hours in upper-20s temperatures, cameras and cell phones at the ready, to watch him filming Wednesday on Cincinnati's downtown Fountain Square. Such crowd scenes have been common over the last two months since Clooney began scouting locations and then filming the first movie he has made in the region, where he grew up.

Clooney acts in and directs "The Ides of March," about a presidential campaign, and the filming around town has become a dominant topic, with folks sharing Tweets and photos of Clooney sightings and hanging around outside the sets. A casting call for 1,500 extras drew 23,000 responses.

Film buff Lauren Wendling said she enjoyed the chance to see the behind-the-scenes work on Clooney's new movie.

"He's a hometown star, and it's great to see someone from here who is so successful," said Wendling, who works in finance. "It's a great experience for people who don't live in LA to just see how a movie is made."

Crew members asked fans to be still whenever filming began, and their requests were consistently met with a hush Wednesday.

"It's been fine," movie publicist Tracey Schaefer said of the crowds. "People have been very respectful of the boundaries."

She said the local clamor had been expected because of Clooney's connections to the area and excitement over a major movie being made here.

And, by the way, he's GEORGE CLOONEY.

The Oscar-winning actor, twice named People magazine's Sexiest Man Alive, is featured on this week's Newsweek magazine cover for his role as a celebrity global activist for freedom and humanitarian efforts. Born in Lexington, Ky., he grew up in Cincinnati area communities where his father, Nick Clooney, was a popular local journalist and TV personality. His late aunt Rosemary Clooney was a famed singer.

Veteran Cincinnati Enquirer media writer John Kiesewetter said local people have bonded with Clooney, the star of such movies as "Batman & Robin," "Ocean's Eleven" and "Syriana."

"He's not just a huge star to people here; they have grown up with him," said Kiesewetter, who first interviewed Clooney when he was on the TV sitcom "The Facts of Life" in 1985. "They feel like they know him. They feel like he's one of us."

WCPO-TV sports anchor Dennis Janson says Clooney has made time to see old friends — he hadn't seen Janson in two decades but greeted him with a bear hug and quickly started talking about the University of Cincinnati Bearcats basketball team and the Cincinnati Reds baseball team.

"George Clooney still the same good guy," Janson titled his blog about the visit.

And Clooney's not the only attraction on the set for the predominantly female crowds. Fan Jennifer Maley has twice spent mornings watching filming, and she showed off a prized memento: a cell phone picture of her with Clooney co-star Ryan Gosling.

"I'm a big Ryan Gosling fan," she said, turning her gaze back to the square as the crew, and she, got ready to shoot Gosling talking on a telephone.

Well he is old! He's 50 in a couple of months so he's no spring chicken.

I'm thinking he's looking pretty damn good for his age in those pics and I lurve his hair like that. Forgive me, Maven, but it's just on the verge of being too long but still ok.

Plus, dare I say it? Yes, I dare. I think he's gained one or two pounds and it really suits him.

George Clooney And Ryan Gosling Bring The Hotness On The Ides Of March Set

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

With George Clooney directing, and Ryan Gosling starring, you know The Ides of March is going to get a whole lot of buzz. Evan Rachel Wood is also in the photographs, but around those two, we’d like to ignore her for a while. Seriously, howgood does Gosling look?

The rest of the cast is full of heavyweights as well. Paul Giamatti, Marisa Tomei andPhilip Seymour Hoffman also have major roles in the film that’s based on the award-winning play Farragut North. They’re currently shooting in Cincinnati, Ohio. We can already see the awards lining up.
