Cast and Crew of Clooney Movie Coming Next Week
January 29 2011
The cast and crew of a major Hollywood production will be in Cincinnati starting next week. There's also going to be a casting call next week for "The Ides of March," which Tri-State native George Clooney will direct and produce. He also stars as a Democratic candidate in the Presidential primary race.
Ohio is a swing state, and Cincinnati is where some of the scenes of ambition, betrayal and backroom politics will be shot. Local 12's Deborah Dixon tells us about one iconic location.
To us, Fountain Square is where we gather to celebrate historic moments or just to socialize, eat and sometimes dance. Now Fountain Square will be shared with the country when "The Ides of March" shoots here.
"It's not a big scene but a big example of Cincinnati as a backdrop." Film Commission Executive Director Kristen Erwin helped George Clooney find 30 shooting locations in greater Cincinnati, keeping cast and crew here three weeks. That means Cincinnati neighborhoods, the city's rich architecture and beautiful skyline will be out there for other movie makers to see. "I think they'll get to see what Cincinnati looks like that's what I hope will bring more movies to the area to see Cincinnati as a backdrop."
16,000 people have applied as extras on "The Ides of March." Some of them will be on Fountain Square for that daytime shoot depicting a Cincinnati afternoon with a touch of Hollywood.
And what a difference one movie scene can make. If you doubt it, just ask Frank Mazzei of Pompilios in Newport. After Dustin Hoffman and Tom Cruise shot a pivotal scene in the movie "Rain Man," business increased 30%. And after 23 years, customers still come in because of it. "They want to see the table, the pay phone where they dropped toothpicks."
The cast includes George, of course, Ryan Goslin, Paul Giamatti, and Evan Rachael Wood. "We want them to have a great experience go back to Hollywood and say I was just in Cincinnati had no idea what a great city it was."
When they go back to Hollywood they will have spent millions to live and film here. "The Ides of March" is inspired by the award-winning play "Farragut North" which is loosely based on the 2004 Democratic primary campaign of Howard Dean.
We'll let you know as soon as we get details about the casting call for extras who haven't already applied.

George Clooney movie casting call Saturday
By John Kiesewetter
January 30, 2011
More than 15,000 people want to be an extra in George Clooney's "Ides of March," filming here next month.
And his production team is looking for more.
An open casting call for adult "background performers" - or extras - will be 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday at Dare To Dream Casting in Longworth Hall, 700 W. Pete Rose Way, Downtown.
The 15,000-plus who have emailed Dare To Dream Casting since Jan. 8 should not come Saturday, says Jacquie Loughery, Dare To Dream Casting CEO and president.
Loughery has been overwhelmed by the huge interest. This is the first movie Clooney will make in the area where he grew up and where his father, Nick, worked in television.
"It's amazing. I knew we'd get thousands, maybe 5,000 or 8,000. I didn't realize in two weeks we'd get 15,000," she says.
Clooney, 49, the Osar-winning actor who grew up in Mason and Augusta, will direct and star as a Democratic governor campaigning in the presidential primaries.
Clooney and writing partner Grant Heslov wrote the screenplay based on Beau Willimon's "Farragut North" play. Willimon was a press aide for John Dean's 2004 presidential campaign.
Ryan Gosling ("Blue Valentine," "The Notebook") stars as the idealistic staffer caught up in dirty campaign tricks.
Marisa Tomei, Evan Rachel Wood, Paul Giamatti, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Jeffrey Wright and Max Minghella will co-star.
Clooney will need "hundreds of extras" while shooting three or four weeks here in February and March, announced Kristen Erwin, Greater Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky Film Commission executive director, two weeks ago.
Erwin and producers have not said what type of scenes will be filmed here.
Up to 26 locations will be used throughout the region, she said.
Since November, Clooney has scouted many locations here. Memorial Hall and Lunken Airport managers said earlier this month that scenes could be shot in both places.
"There are very obvious locations. They will be prominent around the city," Erwin said

I think that The Descendants will be good. However, no other big names in that one either. At least with Ides, he is not pulling it off himself, big name wise.

George Clooney to shoot at Fountain Square
Other Cincinnati locations for upcoming movie 'Ides of March' still secret
Attention ladies: you might soon find Gorgeous George on Fountain Square, at Miami University and at an ecology farm.
We'd like to be more specific, but officials of some of the 26 Greater Cincinnati locations that might be used in George Clooney's "Ides of March" are keeping mostly mum about their involvement in the movie. They don't want to reveal details.
Here's what we ferreted out on the possible places to see the hometown boy do his thing as a Democratic governor campaigning for president:
Two scenes will be shot on Fountain Square, Downtown. Or on at least part of the square. The ice rink will remain there until Feb. 20, which then starts a two-week process of taking it down. The filming will take place before the rink is gone, said Suzanne Schindler, events manager. She didn't know if she should say what kind of scenes would be filmed there, other than that she didn't think they would be crowd or rally scenes.
It doesn't appear that the University of Cincinnati's main campus in Clifton will be used for the film, but the school's licensing department was still working out details for the possibility of using UC's Center for Field Studies in Crosby Township, spokesman Greg Hand said. Students use the field station, in Miami Whitewater Forest, for studying ecosystems and researching animals and plants.
Producers scouted Xavier University, but officials there are keeping quiet, too. "We don't have any other information we can share at this time," Debora Del Valle, public relations director, wrote in an e-mail.
Crews, if they want to block streets or sidewalks, would have to get permits from the city. No applications for such permission have been received, Meg Olberding, spokeswoman for City Manager Milton Dohoney, said Monday.
The Enquirer granted the production company permission to use newspaper boxes and/or copies of the newspaper as "props and/or incidental set dressing."
Kristen Erwin, executive director of the Greater Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky Film Commission, is scheduled to give an update on the movie Tuesday at City Council's Quality of Life Committee, at noon in City Hall. The committee oversees, among other topics, arts and culture and tourism. Chairwoman Laure Quinlivan has made Cincinnati's image her focus for the year.
"Cincinnati's going to look gorgeous in the movie," she said.
Her alma mater, Miami University, is also a possible location. Also on the list of places scouted: Memorial Hall, Lunken Airport and City Hall.
Quinlivan said Clooney is definitely welcome at her committee meeting.

The George Clooney sightings have begun - and tracking the actor as he moves through the city finalizing locations for his new movie might not be as hard as one would expect.
Twitter crackled to life with the first Clooney spotting just before 1 p.m. Wednesday.
"Guess who is at Trio right now??" wrote Marianne Cafaro, the Kenwood restaurant's director of sales. "GEORGE CLOONEY!!!!!"
And indeed, there he was, eating a Santa Fe chicken salad in a private room and earning all those exclamation points. Cafaro said Clooney and a group of about 30 sat down for lunch, a reservation she'd known about the day before but was sworn to secrecy.
Clooney, she said, looked "just as beautiful as he does on television" with a "smile that would bring you to your knees." No one really saw him come in, Cafaro said, but they sure watched him leave.
"Clooney sighting in Cincinnati made my day," wrote another Twitter user who watched him exit Trio, "although I felt kinda creepy pretending to buy cookies."
And then, not two hours later, there were more exclamation points on Twitter: Clooney was rumored to be at Stock Yards Bank & Trust, Downtown. By the time an Enquirer reporter got to the bank, Clooney was nowhere to be found - but division manager Stephen Brown confirmed that Clooney had been in the building and that yes, he was handsome and charming.
Brown said Stock Yards might end up being used as a location for "Ides of March," a movie about a Democratic governor running for president that Clooney will both star in and direct.
"Ides" filming here is set to begin later this month at as many as 26 locations in Greater Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky, so expect the Clooney sightings to continue - and become more frequent. Clooney's cast members - including Ryan Gosling, Marisa Tomei and Philip Seymour Hoffman - also are likely to pop up around town.

Filming starts here on Clooney's 'Ides of March'
7:08 AM, Feb. 10, 2011
John Kiesewetter
After months of anticipation, the "Ides of March" has finally arrived.
George Clooney filmed exteriors Wednesday for his feature film, and more are expected to be shot Thursday in Northside.
The Oscar-winning actor from Augusta, Ky., has been in town for more than a week scouting locations. He's directing and starring as a Democratic governor campaigning in the presidential primaries.
Clooney filmed at Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport on Wednesday, said Sgt. Greg Lewton, the Cincinnati police officer assigned to the film crew.
Northside businesses were told he will shoot exteriors of Ace Hardware and Electric on Hamilton Avenue Thursday.
"They're going to shoot the outside of the building," said Bill Dickhaus, 85, owner of the store since 1955.
Asked if being in a Hollywood film was the biggest thing to happen at his store, Dickhaus said: "We're going to find out."
Parking will be prohibited on Hamilton Avenue Thursday, but the street will remain open to traffic, said Jim Blase, owner of Shake It Records on Hamilton Avenue.
Pictures of covered parking meters and no parking signs were posted on Twitter today. The social media site has been buzzing with Clooney movie sightings in this area for a week.
But there have not been any reports of scenes filmed yet, with stars Ryan Gosling, Marisa Tomei, Evan Rachel Wood, Paul Giamatti, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Jeffrey Wright or Max Minghella.
Miami students tweeted about Clooney's Oxford visit last Thursday to Miami's Farmer School of Business, where he had scouted locations in November.
A photo of Gosling with fans at the Whole Foods Market in Rookwood Commons was posted Sunday. He stars as a first-time campaign staffer caught up in dirty tricks.
Clooney, Gosling and Wood watched the Super Bowl Sunday with the film crew in a private room at BlackFinn Restaurant & Saloon Downtown, People.com reported this week.
Clooney "was really nice and down to earth," and left a generous tip, according to the website.
Up to 26 locations throughout Greater Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky will be used for "Ides of March" over three or four weeks, the Greater Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky Film Commission announced last month.
At least 16,000 people have applied to be "Ides of March" background extras in the past month.

I was about ten feet away from George Clooney today!
Clooney is directing a new movie here in Cincinnati called Ides of March, with Phillip Seymour Hoffman, Paul Giamatti. What's cool is that Clooney is doing a film here in the dead of winter, what is also cool is me seeing him today..lol
He was shooting a scene in front of a hotel and I was just sitting there watching them film. They never told me to move and Clooney smiled at me..lol
He was joking with the crew, but he is very twitchy. He is more geeky than he is on films.
He seems smaller in person and my man is getting old..lol
It was cool to be that close to a superstar. Not that I get starstruck. lol
and
He is petite. Maybe he lost weight for the film. Nice cheekbones. I tried not to stare at him. Some goofy chick was using her cell phone camera and the cop was glowering at her. lol..
He will shoot many scenes around here, so I may see him again. lol

I enjoy the compulsive use of "lol," lol.
I bank on the fact that GTC is geekier in person, lol. It's the only thing that keeps me liking him, lol. And it's a shame, lol, but I suspect he has to be so skinny because the man photographs kinda chunky, it's like a curse. lol.
Lol. lol. Actually, none of this is funny enough to even laugh about under my breath, much less "out loud." Hmph. lol.

No real system. If it's clear about where he is, then maybe the 'where he is now' forum. If it's more pics of filming etc then here, but I'm not too anal about these things.Merlin wrote:Posted this in where is George now.....wasn't sure if it goes here or there Katiedot....

O.K. my mid is in the gutter, but these photos seem to show a part of his anatomy that is quite the package - or it's the jeans.
