Julian Assange sex case: Warrant for Wikileaks founder upheld
A Swedish court has ruled that an arrest warrant against Wikileaks founder Julian Assange on charges of sexual assault will stay in place.
Mr Assange, who denies the allegations, has sought refuge in the Ecuadorean embassy in London for the past two years to avoid extradition.
If he is sent to Sweden, he says he fears charges in the US over the leaking of secret government documents.
A warrant for Mr Assange's arrest was issued at the end of 2010.
Two women in Sweden accuse him of sexual assault.
Appeal
The court in Stockholm agreed with prosecutors who had argued that the warrant should be upheld.
"All in all, the district court makes the assessment that the reasons for the arrest warrant offset the infringement and adverse effects the measure entails for Julian Assange," Judge Lena Egelin said.
"He should therefore continue to be wanted for arrest in his absence," she adds.
Mr Assange's lawyers say they will appeal the decision taken by the district court.
The Ecuadorean government granted asylum to the Wikileaks founder after the UK Supreme Court refused to reopen his appeal against extradition.
Mr Assange fears that if he were extradited to Sweden, he would be extradited again to the United States, where he could face charges over the release of thousands of secret documents by Wikileaks.
Chelsea Manning, an American soldier formerly known as Bradley Manning, was sentenced to 35 years in prison in the US for passing documents to Wikileaks.
The leaks caused intense embarrassment of the US and other governments.

Thanks PAN - Interesting article. She seems to feel the ICC needs to do more. Good idea. - Of course, she could just be drumming up business.(Just kidding!)
I thought John Jones answer to the question "Is there anyone you wouldn't defend?" (from the previous article) very interesting. I wish someone would ask Amal that question.

Well, it's amazing what I'm learning from His Nibs' other half!
It sounds to me as if the UN Security Council is dragging its feet and in Syria's case it's the elephant in the room. All cases are referred to the ICC by UNSC of which Russia and China are members, and if they, as in Syria's case, chose not to refer it, then the war is even more likely to continue........

Hi Gang, killing time waiting for a meeting to start (about as thrilling as it sounds).. googled Amal Alamuddin news.. all I got was about George, the marrying up quote etc. Tried googling AA work, again all about the wedding. Not being sarcastic here, but if her cases/work are considered humanitarian, news worthy.. why do you have to go on a wild goose chase to find it? Oops, gotta dash, meeting is starting.

Because that's how Google's algorithm and Page Ranking works. See below which I copied from "How Ssuff Works". I think you will have to refine your search. For ex. I searced "Amal Alamuddin ICC" and got fewer that were about her relationship with George. But the more pages that are out there that even mention her work/cases, the harder it will be to weed through to find the substantive ones.
"A Web page's PageRank depends on a few factors:
- The frequency and location of keywords within the Web page: If the keyword only appears once within the body of a page, it will receive a low score for that keyword.
- How long the Web page has existed: People create new Web pages every day, and not all of them stick around for long. Google places more value on pages with an established history.
- The number of other Web pages that link to the page in question: Google looks at how many Web pages link to a particular site to determine its relevance."

AUB to launch Alamuddin STL book
BEIRUT: The American University of Beirut will launch a book on the Special Tribunal for Lebanon coedited by Amal Alamuddin, the Lebanese human rights lawyer who shot to fame after the announcement of her engagement to George Clooney.
Aub announced Friday it would organize a panel discussion and book launch on “The Special Tribunal for Lebanon: Law and Practice,” on July 30.
The book is edited by Alamuddin, Nidal Nabil Jurdi, and David Tolbert.
An AUB spokesperson said Alamuddin will not be present for the book launch but will speak via Skype or videotape during the panel discussion.
The book examines the legal and procedural dimensions of the Special Tribunal for Lebanon -- the first court to try terrorist acts under international law.
Alongside Alamuddin the editors of the book include Nidal Nabil Jurdi, a legal scholar and David Tolbert, the president of the International Center for Transitional Justice.
Alamuddin will deliver a brief talk during a panel discussion that has been organized for the book launch. Jurdi and Tolbert, alongside other academics, will also be joining the panel.
Alamuddin’s experience with the STL is derived from her work in the Office of the Prosecutor, one of the four organs of the U.N. Special Tribunal for Lebanon.
She has also been involved in high-profile cases, representing the state of Cambodia, the former Libyan intelligence chief Abdullah Al Senussi and editor and chief of WikiLeaks Julian Assange.
The STL was established to try those responsible for the Valentine's Day assassination of the former Lebanese Prime Minister Rafik Hariri in 2005.
This article was amended on Friday, July 25 2014
The original story mistakenly reported that Amal Alamuddin will be present at the AUB book launch. In fact, Alamuddin will not be in Lebanon and will make an intervention via videotape.

Stating the obvious, but there can be 101 reasons why
Amal can't attend the book launch.
The last paragraph seems to be incorrect as the
original article states that Amal wouldn't be there.
As mere George Clooney fans, I don't see how her business decisions are any of
our business anyway.

It doesn't say when this commission is going to start working. They have a cease-fire in Gaza but nothing solid. Commissions like this usually take a long time right?
Maybee there is still time for a quick wedding before they both are going to be busy working.
Middle East is a hornets nest and worst of all The Palestinian/Israeli conflict. This not a job I would want especially not if I was a Lebanese/Brit marrying an American.

Amal Alamuddin, George Clooney’s fiancee, willNOT serve on the United Nations’ three-member commission on possible violations of the rules of war in Gaza — despite the Associated Press and other outlets claiming she will.In a statement to Gossip Cop, Alamuddin says:
Gossip Cop will have updates.“There are various reports published today stating that I have been appointed as one of three members of the UN Commission of Inquiry for Gaza. I am horrified by the situation in the occupied Gaza Strip, particularly the civilian casualties that have been caused, and strongly believe that there should be an independent investigation and accountability for crimes that have been committed.”
“I was contacted by the UN about this for the first time this morning. I am honoured to have received the offer, but given existing commitments — including eight ongoing cases — unfortunately could not accept this role. I wish my colleagues who will serve on the commission courage and strength in their endeavors.”

NGO: William Schabas must recuse himself from UN Gaza inquiry
GENEVA, — A Geneva-based human rights group called on William Schabas to recuse himself from the UN’s new Gaza inquiry, saying that he is legally disqualified by prior statements expressing his wish to see Prime Minister Netanyahu and former President Shimon Peres indicted before the International Criminal Court.
“Under international law, William Schabas is obliged to recuse himself because his repeated calls to indict Israeli leaders obviously gives rise to actual bias or the appearance thereof,” said Hillel Neuer, an international lawyer and executive director of UN Watch, accredited to the United Nations as a non-governmental organization mandated to monitor the world’s body’s adherence to the UN Charter.
“You can’t spend several years calling for the prosecution of someone, and then suddenly act as his judge,” said Neuer. “It’s absurd — and a violation of the minimal rules of due process applicable to UN fact-finding missions.”
Clooney fiancee is youngest ever to serve on any UN inquiry
UN Watch also questioned the appointment of Hollywood star George Clooney’s fiancee Amal Alamuddin as another commissioner. “She has some experience, but at 36 she will be the youngest ever to serve on any UN inquiry, raising suspicions that the UN is trying to inject some Hollywood publicity into the process,” said Neuer.
Prior statements of Schabas demonstrating bias or appearance thereof:
In addition, UN Watch stressed that the entire July 23rd resolution creating the inquiry, sponsored by the Arab and Islamic states, was “born in bias,” condemning Israel 18 times, yet never mentioning Hamas once.
The EU refused to support the resolution, saying it was “unbalanced, inaccurate, and prejudges the outcome of the investigation by making legal statements.”
The EU noted that the resolution “also fails to condemn explicitly the indiscriminate firing of rockets into Israeli civilian areas as well as to recognize Israel’s legitimate right to defend itself.”
President Obama’s representative to the UNHRC, Ambassador Keith Harper, described the inquiry as “yet another one-sided mechanism targeting Israel.”

Prior statements of Schabas demonstrating bias or appearance thereof:
EU: Resolution creating inquiry is “unbalanced, inaccurate, prejudicial”- “My favorite would be Netanyahu within the dock of the International Criminal Court,” Schabas declared last year. (See video at 12:29)
- Schabas was an active participant before a pro-Palestinian “tribunal” that, according to a New York Times op-ed by Judge Richard Goldstone, consisted of one-sided evidence and a jury composed of “critics whose harsh views of Israel are well known.”
- In a law journal article, Schabas wrote that Netanyahu could be considered “the single individual most likely to threaten the survival of Israel.”
- A few years earlier, Schabas called for “going after” Israeli president Shimon Peres in the ICC, saying, “Why are we going after the president of Sudan for Darfur and not the president of Israel for Gaza?”
- In a 2009 blog post about the UN’s infamous Durban II conference on racism, Schabas urged the world not only to “ignore” Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad’s statements, but to stop “exaggerating” them. According to Schabas, those who “deserve the blame” are “Israel and its friends, who have manipulated the truth about the nature of the work of the United Nations by gross exaggeration of the role and intervention of certain fanatics.” Schabas described Ahmadinejad as nothing more than a “provocative politician,” and not a torturer of dissidents, inciter of genocidal anti-Semitism, and arch-sponsor of terrorism.
- In 2011, Schabas went to Iran to co-sponsor conferences with the Tehran-based “Center for Human Rights and Cultural Diversity,” despite its intimate ties with the fundamentalist regime, and avowed propaganda agenda. The center’s director,Kamran Hashemi, a former political officer with Iran’s foreign ministry, wrote his Ph.D under Schabas at the Irish Center for Human Rights.

PAN-I'm disappointed in that this is obviously a very prestigious appointment, and in defining Amal, the "George's fiancee" title has to be dropped into the paragraph. It feels as though her accomplishments alone are not enough to carry her.
Katiedot maybe her name was announced, but there was a change of heart on someone(s) part, and her statement is a smooth way out of the situation. Just saying.

NGO: William Schabas must recuse himself from UN Gaza inquiry
GENEVA, — A Geneva-based human rights group called on William Schabas to recuse himself from the UN’s new Gaza inquiry, saying that he is legally disqualified by prior statements expressing his wish to see Prime Minister Netanyahu and former President Shimon Peres indicted before the International Criminal Court.“Under international law, William Schabas is obliged to recuse himself because his repeated calls to indict Israeli leaders obviously gives rise to actual bias or the appearance thereof,” said Hillel Neuer, an international lawyer and executive director of UN Watch, accredited to the United Nations as a non-governmental organization mandated to monitor the world’s body’s adherence to the UN Charter.
“You can’t spend several years calling for the prosecution of someone, and then suddenly act as his judge,” said Neuer. “It’s absurd — and a violation of the minimal rules of due process applicable to UN fact-finding missions.”
Clooney fiancee is youngest ever to serve on any UN inquiryUN Watch also questioned the appointment of Hollywood star George Clooney’s fiancee Amal Alamuddin as another commissioner. “She has some experience, but at 36 she will be the youngest ever to serve on any UN inquiry, raising suspicions that the UN is trying to inject some Hollywood publicity into the process,” said Neuer.
Prior statements of Schabas demonstrating bias or appearance thereof:EU: Resolution creating inquiry is “unbalanced, inaccurate, prejudicial”- “My favorite would be Netanyahu within the dock of the International Criminal Court,” Schabas declared last year.

Re: Amal Alamuddin and her work
Something is going on behind the scenes. UN Watch is unhappy with 2 out of 3 commissioners. She is being critized before she even started the job. Surely if they called her she would have thought about it and discussed it with George before she accepted the job? She couldn't have said yes first and then changed her mind. She is a smart woman, she knows what she was getting into. And the UN announcing it without being sure that she had really accepted the job makes no sense either.
Well, she is lucky to not have to do this job.

Or maybe she's disappointed she won't have the opportunity. Isn't this project right up her alley??

George Clooney's British barrister fiancee turns down offer of UN role to help probe 'war crimes' by Israel and Hamas in Gaza
[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
George Clooney's barrister fiancee has turned down an offer from the United Nations to become one of three experts called in to investigate alleged human rights violations and war crimes in Gaza.
British-Lebanese lawyer Amal Alamuddin, 36, was named as part of an independent team observing alleged crimes by both sides during Israel's military offensive on Monday morning, but within hours she had issued a statement saying she had had to turn the offer down and citing prior work commitments.
‘I am honored to have received the offer, but given existing commitments - including eight ongoing cases - unfortunately could not accept this role,’ said Alamuddin in a statement.
The barrister said she had only been contacted by the UN about the role on Monday morning and had had to decline because of ‘existing commitments.’
Alamuddin went on to say she was horrified by the situation in the occupied Gaza Strip, particularly the civilian casualties that have been caused.
‘I strongly believe that there should be an independent investigation and accountability for crimes that have been committed,’ she said.
The ongoing conflict in Gaza has prompted outpourings of opinion, notably from high profile actors including Penélope Cruz and Javier Bardem, who were among a group of Spanish actors who penned an open letter in a national newspaper calling for Europe to condemn Israel's bombing of the Palestinian territory, which described the actions against Palestinians as ‘genocide’.
The letter demanded a ceasefire by the military and urged Israel to lift the blockade in the Gaza Strip.
Following the comments, the pair were accused of being anti-Semitic.
One top producer who has worked with Cruz says he has vowed not to hire her again, according to the Hollywood Reporter. George Clooney hasn't spoken out about the conflict.
‘I wish my colleagues who will serve on the commission courage and strength in their endeavors.’
William Schabas, a Canadian professor of international law, was announced on Monday as the head of the panel along with Doudou Diene, a veteran U.N. human rights expert from Senegal.
The team will investigate 'all violations of international humanitarian law and international human rights law ... in the context of the military operations conducted since 13 June 2014,' the U.N. statement said.
A month of war, marked by Israeli air strikes on Gaza and rockets fired by Hamas militants into Israel, has killed 1,938 Palestinians and 67 Israelis while devastating wide tracts of densely populated Gaza.
The panel is due to report by March 2015 to the U.N. Human Rights Council. Israel has long accused the 47-member state forum of bias against it.
Navi Pillay, the top U.N. human rights official, said on July 31 she believed Israel was deliberately defying international law in its military offensive in Gaza and that world powers should hold it accountable for possible war crimes.
Israel has attacked homes, schools, hospitals, Gaza's only power plant and U.N. premises in apparent violation of the Geneva Conventions, said Pillay, a former U.N. war crimes judge.
Hamas militants in Gaza have violated international humanitarian law by firing rockets indiscriminately into Israel, Pillay said.
Israeli and Palestinian negotiators resumed indirect talks mediated by Egypt on Monday on ending the war, Egypt's state news agency said, after a new 72-hour truce appeared to be holding.
Hollywood star Clooney and Alamuddin have been engaged since April following a whirlwind romance when they met at a charity event in September.
She supposedly refused to give her his number so he wooed her with an email which read: ‘The world’s hottest man should meet the hottest human rights lawyer’.

Re: Amal Alamuddin and her work
Oh man, there is something afoot here, ladies. She decided after the announcement that she had too much on her plate to accept. Wouldn't that have come up in the initial phone call. Sounds an awful lot like an American politician with his hand caught in the cookie jar. Suddenly decides he has to resign/drop out of the election to spend more time with the family.

If ??? this is some kind of PR exercise, it is truly SICK. She has the ability to make a difference. To not do so, and use this only as a PR soundbite is stomach churningly sick.

Re: Amal Alamuddin and her work
The UN announced three new commissioners, one of whom then immediately announced she wasn't taking the job and another of whom has been criticised and suggested he shouldn't take the job.

Polite professional way of saying "are you guys serious. I'm getting married in----days!
More like, "I wouldn't touch that with a ten-foot pole."
Seriously, there was no way for her to win in this. Whatever the committee's recommendations, she'd be accused of being biased by one side and treacherous by the other.
What does the UN need a new 3-person committee for anyway? They're the fucking United Nations. Don't they already have people for that?

Re: Amal Alamuddin and her work
Mm, well probably more than half of the UN are lawyers in their own respective fields ( e g Samantha Power), but I believe they have to appoint an independent team for commissions from outside the UN to avoid complicity etc etc
