Way2Old4Dis wrote:Amal defends her defense of morally questionable people with the tenet that the integrity of the legal process requires that everyone receives vigorous representation. Well, if only by extension, the integrity of the law also requires that the accused actually stand in that defense -- not run away from it, or use borders and political policy to circumvent it. Face the effing music, with your vigorous defense at your side. Defense attorneys, in a just system, have every obligation to mount the best case to save their client. They are not, however, there to help the defendant hide from the law of the land in which he is accused.
Assange, and by her legal support, Ms. Alamuddin, are perpetuating a legal system in which anyone can commit any crime of any magnitude, then avoid the consequences as long as they have enough money to run, hide, and pay big money to game the law. It could be corruption. It could be sexual assault. Or, coming soon to a country near you, it could be genocide.
Take Amal and her choices.
She represents Assange, in an attempt to stop him being taken to another country for trial.
She represents Abdullah al Senussi in attempt to get him taken to another country for trial.
I thank George, I would never have heard of this women, if not for him. I've had an awakening, and then some.
The only thing I can think of, that these two cases have in common, is "hight profile". She sure likes to ping pong in the high profile arena, suppose that includes George as well. Imagine someone so self serving ending up with a man of integrity, who only sought to use his profile to serve others. Now he has to serve Amal too.
I'm sure he thought she was wonderful, maybe she offered to do a little typing, or give a free legal opinion, all with so many high profile case's. He must have thought this busy professional woman an angel. No just very very clever.

I do hope it's not all rhetoric and hopeful promises but that some serious action can come from this Summit.
I know a lot goes on behind closed doors and I wish them all well in their efforts.
It must be a very frustrating job some times
trying to rid our Wonderful World of
such Wickedness.

So when William Hague walked into a summit between Hollywood's most famous couple, it was likely he was going to be a little starstruck.
The Foreign Secretary arrived alongside Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie for the third day of the global summit to End Sexual Violence in Conflict at London's ExCel.

As they entered the exhibition centre in London's Docklands, the Conservative politician stood in the middle of the Hollywood couple to pose for photographs.

Her partner wore a black suit with an open white shirt and sunglasses, while Mr Hague donned a pink tie.

Ms Alamuddin listened to the speeches from the audience on the opposite side of the auditorium to where Jolie and Pitt were sitting.

Jolie and Mr Hague are co-chairing the four-day global summit to End Sexual Violence in Conflict (ESVC) - now in its third day - and have launched an international protocol which they hope will 'really, truly end impunity'.

Baroness Warsi, who was sitting in the row behind the Hollywood heartthrob, was heard joking with one woman before Pitt took his seat: 'This is Team Hague.'
In her speech, addressing delegates and officials from all over the world, Jolie said: 'We are here for the nine-year-old girl in Uganda, kidnapped and forced into sexual slavery.
'We are here for the man in Bosnia, years after rape, still stigmatised, unable to earn enough money to buy bread for his family.
'We are here for all the forgotten, hidden survivors who have been made to feel ashamed or been abandoned.
'And for the children of rape - we want the whole world to hear their stories and understand that this injustice cannot be tolerated, and that sorrow and compassion are not enough.'
The audience was shown short film clips featuring the hashtag £TimeToAct, which is now trending on Twitter.
The summit has seen diplomats, officials and non-profit representatives from more than 100 countries gather to press for the rights of victims of sexual violence — women, men and children alike.

Re: Amal Alamuddin and her work
Also trivial: I think she has that same suit in at least three colors. The blue and black outfits were similar, if not exactly the same, right? I only noticed because I'm not a shopper, and when I find something I like I typically buy it in several colors. Maybe Amal is the same. She seems more of a shoe/handbag girl than a clothing girl to me.
Anyway, back to rape, war, and genocide. Carry on.

This problem with sexual abuse is not only in war ridden counties. In the Philippines (just to name one) underage girls are being sold/rented for sex.
In India, it is reported that there's a daily rape of young girls by villagers.
We live in a sin infested world where the word 'dignity' is a word with two different meanings. (depending on who you are)

Seriously? (No pun intended). How to decide who's a "serious" person or not? Is Amal serious but maybe Renee zellweger is not ? Or is she serious when working but not cavorting in Cabo ? I hope site will not become so PC that any comments at all about her clothes or about her appearance are out of bounds (I'm not including truly mean spirited comments) Yet George's rear end has a whole thread.premiere wrote:Is it appropriate to discuss Amal's looks, clothes, weight, etc., or only when it's positive? There is an article on the Daily Mail website ( Mail On-Line) just posted about Amal, but I can't get it to this site. Maybe one of the smart kids can be of help ( or maybe I'm still a newbe and can't do stuff like that yet)
The article headlines with George's lady in red: Clooney's finacee puts her wedding plans to one side as she lines up alongside Angelina Jolie at sexual violence summit. Having typed all that ( whew), my point is.. Amal has been noted to be a well known human rights supporter, a barrister, etc, and the Daily Mail has to explain to their readers who she is.. not as the barrister, but George's fiancee??? I mean no sarcasm here- I truly believed her name was well established in London etc, long before the romance, and therefore doesn't need the Clooney fiancee tag to identify her.

Re: Amal Alamuddin and her work
In actual fact post WW2 Churchill et al, did make sexual violence in war a war crime. Part of the statement at the time was the importance (to the victim) of the trials being conducted in the country in which the crime was committed. Mmmm brings to mind Amal's work with Mr Al- Senussi. Lest we forget, carried away by her lovely shoes, this is exactly what AA is being PAID to do for Mr Al-Senussi.
Hopefully Georges influence, and money, will STOP her taking these ill conceived and offensive cases. She might just note down that money, even the tax free kind- isn't everything.
Pigpen, Sorry, she was nobody in particular before Clooney, absolutely nobody. Did you not hear the BBC profile post.
Really in London there are many many ppl well known for all the above, AA name was NEVER in the frame, go find the swarms of articles and come back then.

Sorry, I disagree. In the US at least, I don't think 99% of the population could name any lawyer that does not have their own TV show, much less a human rights lawyer. Does not mean she is not well respected in her field, just a field that is not on the celebrity/publicity/news radar. She was more likely to write an article than be the subject of one.

I did not say she was not respected,(and known in her field) I said she was "nobody" regarding her celebrity status. She may well be utterly fantastic at her work, as are many, but she has never been news worthy until NOW. Pre-Clooney' she would have attended today, and nobody would have taken her picture neither would she be newsworthy in shape or form. That is why the Daily Mail headline mentions Clooney. Otherwise she might as well be the guy sitting next to her or behind her, OR the person who took the seats in front away for a better shot of her legs.

George's lady in red: Clooney's fiancée puts her wedding plans to one side as she lines up alongside Angelina Jolie at sexual violence summit
She is said to be planning a September wedding to George Clooney.
But Amal Alamuddin had more important things on her mind on Thursday as she attended the third day of the global summit to End Sexual Violence in Conflict in London, alongside Brad Pitt, Angelina Jolie and William Hague.
In spite of the serious occasion, the human rights lawyer looked stylish in a tailored red dress as she listened intently to the discussion.

Turning heads: In spite of the serious occasion, the human rights lawyer looked stylish in a tailored red dress as she listened intently to the discussion
Her attire was an elegant choice for the occasion, and the raven-haired beauty took a keen interest in what was being said.
Amal was seen taking notes during one of the talks at the summit, which has also been attended by several stars.
Among the famous faces at the event were Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt, who were seen entering the ExCeL exhibition centre in London's Docklands with Conservative politician William Hague.
The brunette beauty - who is special envoy for the UN High Commissioner for Refugees – looked smart in an all-black ensemble.
Angelina, 39, went for a suit jacket and a pair of loose-fitting trousers for the day.
Brad also dressed to impress in a black suit jacket and matching trousers together with a white shirt.

As well as her work, Amal has been enjoying a busy personal life after she and George got engaged in April.
They are now said to be planning to marry in Venice in September, exactly one year to the day since they met.
It comes after the couple cancelled plans to hold their wedding at the Hollywood hunk's sprawling Lake Como estate, because they felt the venue wasn't private enough.

Amal is definitely well dressed although in my humble opinion seems to be slipping on a red carpet (you'll be practicing?)! Looking at the pictures of other guests, including Angelina Jolie m seems that all to dress soberly while the lawyer seems to want to show off. Ouch Ouch Ouch ....... celebrity pleases everyone and the great lawyer is not free from this.

Don't want to argue with you but you said "there are many people well know for the above" and she was "absolutely nobody." I took that to mean there are human rights lawyers/ activists in London who are household names.
I actually agree with you she did not become "general news" newsworthy until Clooney came in to the picture. Am surprised at anyone who thought by reading the stories about her since her relationship with George who got the impression she was somehow well know before outside an extremely small circle.

Re: Amal Alamuddin and her work
Btw...there are many many people here in UK
who don't know who George Clooney is either.
The COH information available here about George
together with the numerous online articles, interviews,
videos etc etc give a false impression of his newsworthiness outside of USA.
He's not so well known nor talked about here in UK
as many folk here may think.
Don't forget we don't have the "celebrity gossip" TV programmes here in UK as there seem to be in USA.
Generally speaking, our media concentration is on our Royal Family, our Politicians
and our Premier Football Clubs.
Speaking of which, we've just started the wall to wall TV, Radio and newspaper coverage of the World Cup Football Finals set in Brazil.
I for one will be a watching most games !
who don't know who George Clooney is either.

and our Premier Football Clubs.
Speaking of which, we've just started the wall to wall TV, Radio and newspaper coverage of the World Cup Football Finals set in Brazil.
I for one will be a watching most games !

Re: Amal Alamuddin and her work
I know that there is no red carpet but it seems to me that Amal, well dressed flamboyantly, is doing training for a red carpet! Across the hall is the only one that can be seen with the orange dress ...... I think she likes it a lot to be noticed! Other than sober lawyer, give her a George Clooney and she turns into diva!Joanna wrote: lelacorb .... non c'è red carpet. Solo un ingresso nel palazzo Excel, per un periodo molto importante tre giorni summit internazionale globale sui problemi che riguardano GIOVANI DONNE.

Oh maybe it's the only suit that was pressed.
On topic, I think this summit is great, but how much can you influence people who have no integrity to begin with? Despots will use rape to instill fear, loathing, shame, you name it. The only good dictator and/or rebel fighter who kidnaps children for sexual slavery or to fight wars IMO is a DEAD one.

Did you get the impression that Hague "meant business" and something
of substance would be achieved from the summit ?
Trust the media to take the "celebrity" road !

Not all the media, Jo. But to be honest it's the celebrities that become the lightning point for this sort of initiative.
Hague is superb and went from meeting to meeting leading from the front all day - and this was the third day - as did Jolie and Pitt, visiting all the exhibits too

Re: Amal Alamuddin and her work
PAN - I think it's wonderful that you got to go to the conference. I didn't realize it was open to the public Could anyone go or did you need a ticket or some kind of credentials or invitation?
I know Angelina Jolie was the opening speaker, but were there any other speakers of note? Did it seem to you that something could really come of this? Did anyone recommend specific actions that ordinary citizens could take to help solve this horrible problem?
I don't care what Amal wore or if she looked like she was courting the press. If her being there drew media attention to the event, that's what's important.

I don't think what anyone wore was the point of today, if a pink tie is acceptable than so is Amal's outfit.. I was hoping if maybe we would be able to get any speeches or other pertinent information that may have come out of the three days.
Thank you all for getting all this information you're great.

Re: Amal Alamuddin and her work
I'm more perturbed by the "Amal and Angelina attended together". Nope, Angelina pulled together and is running the summit (along with William Hague); Amal bought a ticket to get in. Not Amal's fault at all, but the press is getting a little out of control. They're not all friends; they don't hang out together; they may not even have met yet. These stories are in the "Matt Damon will be the best man!" vein.
In the earlier pictures, Amal is standing right next to a woman wearing a BRIGHT green, blue and yellow dress, so I really don't understand the "everyone else is wearing black, attention-wh0re!" handwringing that's going on.
In terms of actionable steps, one of the great things they did at the summit was hold a hackathon, in which people from all different fields - tech, NGOs, law, human rights, etc - got together to brainstorm ideas. One I thought was great was a GPS type device that aid workers could use to report and track sexual violence as they encounter it in the field. I don't think the goal of the summit is to change the hearts and minds of dictators, but to draw attention to the issue and to come up with some strategies for fighting it.
Also, kudos to Angie on the PR management for this. Scheduled for two weeks after the release of Maleficient, one of her biggest hits. Holds off on bringing Brad in until the third day, when attention has started to wane and people are getting distracted by the World Cup, and releases photos of them with their arms around each other reading the words of survivors. She really is good at managing her publicity; George could take a lesson or two.

Re: Amal Alamuddin and her work
Well said, Missa.
What this global summit has done has brought governments of many many countries together, many of whom have as a result committed and effectively signed up to stop such things happening and Jolie said there today that there is now no excuse because they know what to do about it and are very aware having joined the talks. So they now accountable.........
It is a stunning conference.
Another initiative that hasn't had so much play is Justine Greening's (International Development UK Minister) announcement about lights run by mobile phone technology now being despatched to areas where women have to walk alone in fear and the dark in conflict areas. Great idea
Oh, and by the way, the conference is so huge that there are many levels of the conference that are ticketed and many areas with multiple discussions which are open to the public for the first three days. Amal was in the main auditorium as part of William Hague's delegstion......
