Though both George Clooney and Elisabetta Canalis insisted recently they were going strong, new details suggest their breakup wasn't a surprising turn of events.

"He's been trying to figure out how to get out of this for a while," a source told E! Online.

In fact, more than four weeks ago, the site reported there was trouble in paradise for the couple, who began dating in 2009.

"It's pretty clear he's over it and wants to move on. I just don't think he knows how," a friend of Clooney's claimed at the time.

Us Weekly sources are now echoing that theory, saying the actor had been "creating distance" between himself and his Italian gal pal for several months.


While Clooney, 50, allegedly said work commitments were keeping them apart, there might have been additional issues at play.

Canalis, an occasional model, actress and TV presenter, was "unsure of herself" around Clooney's famous friends, E! insiders said.

"She didn't speak great English," one source noted.

And on a New Year's Eve trip in Mexico, there was "nonstop bickering over little things," an Us source alleged.

"He would only hang out with his friends," the source explained, "and more or less left her to herself and her friends."

Another likely problem? Their opposing views on marriage.

Clooney, who was previously wed to Talia Balsam, has repeatedly sworn off another trip down the aisle.

But Canalis, 32, seemed to have heart set on being a bride, telling Chi magazine recently that while she was happy in her current relationship with the notorious bachelor, "in the future, I will be married."

The stars called their breakup, announced in a joint statement to the Daily News on Wednesday, "very difficult and very personal."

But though her rep also called it a "very personal and sad matter," Canalis may dish some details in the future.

"She will be taking some time ... and then will face the press," her publicist told People.

In the meantime, Canalis' friend Alfonso Signorini - who conducted her Chi interview - provided his own insight on the Italian TV program "Rai Uno" Thursday.

"From what I know it was him who dumped her and she stormed out of the villa," he claimed, according to Us. "I've tried to get her on the telephone but it's switched off."

Signorini said he was surprised by the split, because things seemed "really well" between the two as recently last week.

Still, he acknowledged the couple had their issues - particularly because of Clooney's worldwide fame.

He "is actually very fatherly but at the same time they did have a very complicated relationship..." Signorini said. "It's not easy to be with a star of that caliber."

Ma è vera fine? Colpo di teatro: ci sono ottimi motivi per azzardare una clamorosa ipotesi. I piccioni avrebbero bluffato. Come sin dal principio hanno sempre sostenuto i bene informati dello star system, la love story non sarebbe nata per amore ma per contratto. Non a caso il Los Angeles Time da due giorni ha lanciato un big sondaggio: la relazione era vera o serviva a fare spettacolo? E già è una valanga a favore degli scettici. Massì, la favoletta dei cuori trafitti fa acqua da tutte le parti: le carte sono truccate, per due anni sono stati insieme solo davanti a fotografi e telecamere, mai uno straccio di scoop che documentasse un bacio verace da innamorati.

Un fidanzamento dunque solo mediatico, una idea da marketing pubblicitario, in due parole: bufala è. E bufala anche l’annunciata conclusione con quel comunicato molto commovente che finisce con il drammatico appello a rispettare le loro privacy. Ma come scrive l’autorevolissimo Wall Street Journal: «La loro rottura è una vera tragedia per i paparazzi, i giornalisti di gossip e i programmi tv di infoteinement». Che non potranno più campare di rendita sulla coppia. Tranquilli, solo per un po’ però: il contratto infatti non è stato stracciato, è ancora in vigore. La «fine» della storia fa parte del copione: si sono lasciati ma si ri-fidanzeranno, più in là. E’ stata solo una mossa per riaccendere i riflettori.

A svelare il retroscena della rottura che tanto chiasso ha fatto è una fonte qualificata. Sentite: «Sciocchezze, tutte sciocchezze... non è vero niente. Hanno preso in giro tutti...». A parlare è uno dei due agenti di Elisabetta Canalis. Che, in un momento di relax, si è lasciato andare e l’ha detta tutta. Intanto è cominciato l’indovinello sulla futuribile nuova fidanzata di Clooney, da Scarlett Johansson a Sandra Bullok, Olivia Wilde... Basta! Due maroni.
