There were some really funny poems on twitter today about the meeting (bear in mind that I follow largely left-wing, liberal publications, so I'll really only see their posts online):

Agree carol.  Gorbachev's words are at least very unsettling.  Adding Trump to the equation as a world leader has upped the wariness of a possible nuclear predicament.  That is because Trump talks carelessly, recklessly and without knowledgeable thought on nuclear proliferation and what it truly means to encourage other countries to develop their own weapons or to make a claim that nuclear weapon usage should never be ruled out.

A small sign of hope: Several government agencies that were ordered to go off-line have joined the resistance and opened rogue sites to get information out to the public. (National Parks Service, NASA, the CDC and others).

Just the fact that Trump ordered a communications shutdown should make even his Republican toadies shake in their boots, but it should give the rest of us some hope. Congress may knuckle under to him, but the real government - the professional civil servants who are there for years under multiple presidents - are fighting back. Bravo!!

Go Theresa!! to answer your question, Donnamarie.

Don't envy her at all, but her speech last night in Philadelphia to leading Republicans was pretty impressive. and she'll be very well prepared.

She was our Home Secretary for many years which includes security services to the highest possible level. She's very no nonsense...........

Last week one of the politicians from the new right-wing party 'Alternative for Germany' said that we talk  too much about Hitler and the Nazi-regime, concentrate too much on lost wars. Instead our kids should learn more about our poets, musicians and philosophers at school. (He's a history teacher at school but is a MP in one of our federal states - I don't know what I'd do if he'd teach my kids...). And we're the only nation in the world which set up a 'monument of shame' in their capital - referring to the Holocaust memorial.

But as a reaction, he was disinvited from today's hour of commemoration in one of the largest concentration camps (it's in his federal state, and as a MP he'd normally join it), and when he showed up there he got an order to stay away from that area. Just tge right reaction IMO, but I hesitated to read the comments. Because I'm sure there were many who simply agreed with him...

Will they never extinct?

Just to remind you that other countries have idiots as well...

Thanks PAN.  Love the Lette tweet!  I read parts of May's speech and overall she was very measured and pragmatic in her thoughts.  Sounds like our Republican audience loved her.  I can't say I appreciated her enthusiasm for Trump's win and what it means for our country but I understand one has to be careful in what you say to someone you hope to have a working relationship with.

I can't remember where I read this yesterday but it was reported that when Obama saw May in November he took her aside and asked her to "befriend" Trump.  I think his intent  was for her to provide a reasonable voice to Trump in hopes he would find a world leader to listen to and trust.  Unfortunately knowing Trump as we do now I'm not sure Obama's advice to May will have any impact.  Basically I think Trump is a lost cause.

Trump is a great president & sourgrapes to those who can't stop moaning about him.

Can't see George Clooney & his entouraginvited to the White House any time too soon. LOL  Like 8 years of Trump administration. & when that's over, probably Republicans will retain government cos of the great state of theconomy.  If Clooney lives long enough to see that.

President Trump wants stronger UK ties cos Brexit opened new opportunity tradfor him. Obama grovelled to Germany & Merkel.  Got rid of Churchill's statue from White House too.

Hi RoccoAhoy.  Welcome.  Are you a George Clooney fan?

Your opinion of Trump is shared by quite a few people in our country.  When I think of the last time the Republicans were in charge of our country for eight years I am reminded of George Bush and the Republicans' policies that led to the worse recession in our country's history ... not to mention the Iraq and Afghan wars.
A Trump presidency is going to be quite different than any other in our our country's history.  I don't foresee many proud moments for the U.S. in the near future.
A President who lied his way into the White House and insulted so many people along the way is not an inspiration for our country.

Trump is not Bush it not Reagan.
He's in power because of freedom & democracy.  Not a coup.
Nor a military junta backing him.
No nonsense leader.

Lies is what defined Hillary Clinton & her career.  Let's not forget so many others lie for profit & manipulation of media.

Some of Clooney's film work was ok, about 10 years ago & before that.

Wow,
Trump's immigration ban really seems to work!
Now people from Syria, Iraq, Iran, Somalia, Sudan, Libya and Yemen aren't allowed to enter the States even if they have a green card or a permanent residency. Including a young scientist from Iran who was offered a fellowship to study in Harvard.

The probkem also is that everybody lacks of informations: neither airlines nor ambassys seem to know who's allowed to travel and who isn't. At least the US embassy in Germany wasn't able to say who might enter the States and I guess the fact that there aren't any ambassadors at the moment, doesn't make it easier...

Yep, and now people with green cards are not allowed either - and of course all of this at a weekend when the powers that be in Congress and the Senate are elsewhere

Some examples - and a timeline of Trump's schedule today....

PAN, I'm surprised we're just finding out about this guy found dead in his car in Russia.  Supposedly his death occurred on Boxing Day? A month ago?  This story has not surfaced here in the states.  This is stunning!
Honestly I've been annoyed that the Russian hacking story has not been talked about as much in the last week.  Not surprisingly, with all of the other Trump antics  these past six days it is hard to keep up with so many controversies.

The Muslim ban is despicable.  There haven't been any real threats in the U.S. to warrant this action.  The mass shootings that have occurred in our country were committed by people born in this country.  Our vetting process for refugees is extensive.  It is a fact that it takes 18 months to two years before a refugee is allowed into our country.  And even then it's mostly women and children.  This is no more than an attempt by Trump to throw his weight around ... big, tough guy.  Making pronouncements in his usual authoritarian way.  This is going to bite him in the ass.  There are many outraged here in the states over this.  The Republican Party once again has shown its true colors.  When Trump was running in the primaries Ryan and Pence both came out against Trump for calling for a ban on Muslims coming into our country.

Mm,well I'm figuring the blanket executive orders followed by the coverage is deliberate, Donnamarie, and the strategy means less coverage than if they were released week by week. It also means the Russian news gets buried

He can of course claim how hard he's been working at keeping his promises to those who believe this stuff.

I see Justin Trudeau has welcomed those who have been turned away.....The word carnage is being used here for this first week.

Donna,
some refugees who had the allowance to enter the States and are now sent back, have famiky members who already live in your country.
Now just imagine that they are injured, tortured or killed in the country they've tried to escape from, or they simply disappear and nobody knows where they are. What do you think, will their family members feel about that? I can imagine that it's quite easy to radicalize them...

I just remember the Afghan family we collected money for to be re-united since only the father and the eldest daughter first came to Germany (it's so expensive to pay the people to bring them to Europe). The mother and the younger daughters hid at friends and family for nearly two years until they got the permit to come to Germany as well. What if something had happened to them during this time?

Tashfeen Malik the wife, with an infant child, who pledged her allegiance to ISIS and went on a murderous rampage that left 14 people murdered and many more injured was not born in the United States.
I understand she was Pakistani and came through Saudi Arabia, so the ban would not have stopped her!

......and as Lizzy said, none of the muslim countries Trump does business with are affected.

Of course such actions give Daesh every excuse under the sun to attack America.

Many large protests now at airports around the country......

Congress and Senate need to step in and stop the fool.

We have Muslims serving and risking their lives in our armed forces, something neither Trump or his son's have ever done. Yet he doesn't want to allow them in here.

Hopefully, he will be impeached well before the 207.

There is no good argument for this ban nor a good reason to extend the ban.  Ladybug, citing one woman who was born in Pakistan and helped her husband kill 14 innocent people in our country is not reason enough to bring this ban.  The cost is going to be much greater because we may alienate our own Muslim population here in the U.S. and it  could lead to serious repercussions overseas as carolhathaway mentioned in her post.

This action is a thinly veiled attempt to discriminate against the Muslim religion.  The ban doesn't cover all Muslims in the world but just enough to send a clear message.
We might as well haul away the Statue of Liberty and put it into storage somewhere until we can get rid of this President.

So right annemarie.  There are many Muslims who have served admirably in our military in many capacities.  Trump and his sons have never sacrificed anything for the United States.  They have only served their bank accounts.

My effort was to point out, the murderous actions were not ALL committed by people born in the United States.  ISIS claimed responsibility for the murders in San Bernardino.  To date, ISIS and their partners of evil doers have not been held accountable for their murderous actions across the Globe.  The ban puts the issue and the conversation front and center.

I would be a lot more sympathetic if SOMETHING had been done through the INTERNATIONAL Courts regarding the MURDEROUS actions across the globe.  President Trump now has everyone's attention.

You are right Ladybug.  Trump does have everyone's attention.  He wants to disrupt.  He wants the limelight.  But it's not for noble reasons or to genuinely protect our country.  His actions over the last six days have only served his ego. It's important to understand his motives.

ISIS is being held accountable.  But unless the head of ISIS and his deputies are captured and brought to trial for their crimes justice on the battlefield will have to suffice.

Who is the head of ISIS?  Where does he or her reside?  Who is holding ISIS accountable for murder?  How is ISIS being held accountable for murder?

We knew who Hitler was.  We knew where Hitler was located.  We knew Hitler's agenda and his followers were identifiable.

ISIS and their partners of evildoers operate under the wicked twisted ideology they have the god given right steal, murder, and destroy.  In this effort they hide in plain sight and lay in wait to carry out mass murder.  Exactly who has held them accountable for that.

Trump has everyone's attention because he is turning into a dictator. And the people of America better see that and under stand That.

The ACLU filed a class action lawsuit an emergency stay was granted to allow those who are legally allowed to enter the country from

being deported.
