The U.S. Supreme Court on Wednesday granted a request by President Donald Trump's administration to fully enforce a new rule that would curtail asylum applications by immigrants at the U.S.-Mexico border, a key element of his hardline immigration policies.
The court said the rule, which requires most immigrants who want asylum to first seek safe haven in a third country through which they traveled on their way to the United States, could go into effect as litigation challenging its legality continues.
Among the nine judges on the court, liberal Justices Sonia Sotomayor and Ruth Bader Ginsburg dissented.
The White House said in a statement that they are pleased with the decision.  

'We are pleased the Supreme Court has ruled our Administration can implement important, needed fixes to the broken asylum system,' Deputy Press Secretary Hogan Gidley said after the court's ruling.
'This greatly helps build on the progress we've made addressing the crisis at our southern border and will ultimately make American communities safer,' Gidley added.

The rule would bar almost all immigrants from applying for asylum at the southern border. It represents the latest effort by Trump's administration to crack down on immigration, a signature issue during his presidency and 2020 re-election bid.
The American Civil Liberties Union and others who challenged the administration's policy in federal court said it violates U.S. immigration law and accused the administration of failing to follow the correct legal process in issuing the rule, which was unveiled on July 15.
In her dissent, Sotomayor said that the government's rule may be in significant tension with the asylum statute.
'It is especially concerning, moreover, that the rule the government promulgated topples decades of settled asylum practices and affects some of the most vulnerable people in the Western Hemisphere - without affording the public a chance to weigh in.'
Eight days after the rule went into effect in July, California-based U.S. District Judge Jon Tigar issued a nationwide injunction blocking it.


Then began a back-and-forth between Tigar and the 9th Circuit, which scaled back the injunction so that the Trump rule was blocked in the border states of California and Arizona while in effect in Texas and New Mexico.
Tigar ruled to restore the nationwide ban on Monday, but the 9th Circuit scaled it back again on Tuesday night.
They were both trumped by Supreme Court, which will allow the asylum restriction to remain in place until the underlying legality of the rule is determined at trial.
'This is just a temporary step, and we´re hopeful we´ll prevail at the end of the day,' ACLU attorney Lee Gelernt said. 'The lives of thousands of families are at stake.'

The rule drew legal challenges including from a coalition of groups represented by the ACLU. They accused the administration of pursuing an 'asylum ban' and jeopardizing the safety and security of migrants fleeing persecution and seeking safety in the United States.
In the administration's request to fully enforce the rule, U.S. Solicitor General Noel Francisco asked the Supreme Court to issue a stay blocking the injunction while litigation over the issue proceeds because the judge's order interferes with the government's authority to establish immigration policy.
The administration said the rule screens out asylum claims that are unlikely to succeed and 'deters aliens without a genuine need for asylum from making the arduous and potentially dangerous journey from Central America to the United States.'
The Supreme Court in December rebuffed a bid by the administration to implement a separate policy prohibiting asylum for people crossing the U.S.-Mexican border outside of an official port of entry, with conservative Chief Justice John Roberts joining the four liberal justices in denying the request. The Democratic-led House of Representatives Judiciary Committee voted Thursday to set up a formal process to investigate whether to impeach President Trump – as Speaker Nancy Pelosi blasted reporters for pressing her on a topic that is splitting her caucus. 
'I'm not answering any more questions on investigations,' Pelosi told reporters at a press conference, after saying she supports the Judiciary Committee's actions. 
She accused reporters of being 'hung up' on the language – an impeachment inquiry – of what was going on at the committee. 'I'm not answering any more questions on this subject,' she snapped at one point during her presser.  
The Judiciary panel voted 24-17 along party lines to set rules for an impeachment inquiry, codifying a probe that panel members have already said existed and could lead to it recommending formal articles of impeachment later this year.  

The Judiciary panel has already launched far-reaching probes of the Trump campaign, alleged campaign finance violations, the Constitution's emoluments clause, and other matters. And in court filings, Democrats have pointed to the impeachment power as an argument for why they should gain access to administration documents. 
Panel Chairman Rep. Jerold Nadler of New York promised the move would herald an aggressive investigation into 'corruption, obstruction and abuse of power' by the president.

President Donald Trump immediately mocked the effort Thursday morning by tweeting a quote that he attributed to early impeachment-backer Rep. Al Green of Texas. 
The president wrote: 'We can't beat him, so lets impeach him!' Democrat Rep. Al Green.'
The actual comment by the Texas lawmaker that the president was seeking to attribute to him was: 'I'm concerned if we don't impeach this president, he will get re-elected.'

Green continued: 'If we don't impeach him, he will say he's been vindicated. He will say the Democrats had an overwhelming majority in the House and didn't take up impeachment. He will say we have a constitutional duty to do it if it was there and we didn't. He will say he's been vindicated,' Green said, in May comments on MSNBC  
Pelosi, who has worked to tamp down a rush toward impeachment, bristled at questions about Thursday's action, which she said she supported.
'So I stand by what we have been doing all along. I support what is happening at the Judiciary Committee because that enables them to do their process of interrogation in their investigation and I salute them for that work,' Pelosi said.
She blasted reporters at a press conference who pushed for follow-up information.
She said from her travels around the country, she speaks to voters who 'understand that impeachment is a very divisive measure. But if we have to go there we will have to go there.'
'But we can't go there unless we have the facts. And we will follow the facts and we will follow the obstruction of the president … and make our decision when we are ready,' Pelosi said.
'That's the only question. That's the only thing I'm going to say about this subject,' she barked.
'I have said what I’m going to say on the subject,' she said at one point. 'That’s it. We are legislating. We are focusing on the work we are here to do for the American people. And part of our responsibility is to honor our oath of office to project and defend the Constitution of the United States.'
'And in doing so we are seeking the facts. I am not answering any more questions on this subject. That is what we have said all along. That is what we continue to do,' she said. 
At the end of her 23-minute presser, a reporter asked Pelosi if she was ‘uncomfortable’ with the term ‘impeachment inquiry’ and if there was another word that should be used.
Pelosi threw up her hands in response.
‘Thank you all very much,’ she said, picking up her notes and starting to walk away from the podium.
Then she stopped to address the subject.
‘We are on our path where it takes us. We will follow the facts. That’s what it is. Why don’t we spend some time going over to see [Senate Majority Leader] Mitch McConnell and asking him why he doesn’t want to save lives?’ she said, in a reference to gun control legislation.
‘Why is it that you’re hung up on a word over here when lives are at stake over there? Thank you all,’ she added and abruptly left the briefing room.
Her comments came after Judiciary member Rep. Hakeem Jeffries of New York, the Democratic Caucus chair, tweeted his support for the resolution. Jeffries in prior comments has expressed caution about going down the impeachment path.

The 41-member panel met to debate a resolution allowing it to designate hearings as impeachment proceedings, subject witnesses to more aggressive questioning and quicken the pace of an investigation that is expanding into areas that could prove politically explosive for both Trump and Congress.
In prior impeachment proceedings, including during Watergate in 1974, a vote by the full House preceded formal committee action.

House Democrats opted for another strategy to deal with Trump, with the caucus split at the moment on how to proceed. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has cautioned of the risks of going forward with impeachment without a strong show of public support, given that an effort would almost certainly fail in the Republican-controlled Senate.
Increasingly vocal members of the Judiciary panel have argued that the evidence already available calls for at least an impeachment inquiry to go forward.
'The conduct under investigation poses a threat to our democracy,' Nadler said Thursday. 'We have an obligation to respond to this threat. And we are doing so.'
Committee members also hope that approving the resolution will dispel lingering confusion within the House Democratic caucus about how to describe the investigation.


'We have been explicit about our intentions. This committee is engaged in an investigation that will allow us to determine whether to recommend articles of impeachment with respect to President Trump,' Nadler said at the hearing Thursday.
But a more aggressive probe could also increase pressure on House Democratic leaders including Speaker Nancy Pelosi, who has resisted impeachment as a politically risky step for moderate Democratic freshmen from swing districts where ousting Trump is an unpopular idea.
Republicans dismissed the resolution as a 'fantasy' move intended to distract from Democrats' unwillingness to have the full House authorize a formal impeachment inquiry, as occurred during the Watergate era and the impeachment of former President Bill Clinton.
Said top panel Republican Doug Collins fumed during Thursday's hearing: 'The Judiciary Committee has become a giant Instagram filter – to make it appear that something’s happening that is not.'
'The ambiguity - the confusion - is a product of my colleagues' own making because there is an easy way to know exactly whether this committee is in impeachment proceedings: It´s called a vote - a vote of the full House of Representatives,' said Representative Doug Collins, the panel's top Republican.
Committee Democrats are already planning to use the new tactics that allow an hour of questioning by committee lawyers on one of Trump's closest confidants - former Trump campaign manager Corey Lewandowski - who is due to appear before the panel next Tuesday for what may be a contentious hearing.
Democrats on the committee say the resolution will enhance their ability to assemble allegations known as 'articles of impeachment' against Trump. They expect Lewandowski's testimony will help lay out a charge of obstruction of justice. But they are also pursuing allegations of campaign finance violations, witness tampering and unlawful self-enrichment through his business ventures.
Democrats aim to decide by the end of the year whether to recommend articles of impeachment against Trump to the full House. If approved by the chamber, the Republican-controlled Senate would be left to hold a trial and consider the president's ouster.
A Reuters head count shows that 135 House Democrats back an impeachment inquiry. While that is a majority of the caucus, the number is well short of the 218 votes needed to pass a resolution.
Only two American presidents have been impeached by the House: Andrew Johnson in 1868 and Clinton in 1999. Neither was convicted by the Senate.
Former President Richard Nixon resigned in 1974 after the House Judiciary Committee approved articles of impeachment against him, but before the full House voted on the matter.

The Trump administration on Thursday announced repeal of an Obama-era regulation that had expanded pollution protections for waterways such as wetlands and shallow streams, but that farmers, miners and manufacturers decried as overreach.
The widely anticipated move to repeal the 2015 Waters of the United States rule, known as 'WOTUS,' is part of a broader effort by President Donald Trump to roll back environmental regulations to boost industry. Environmental groups called the move 'shameful and dangerous.'
It was announced by Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Andrew Wheeler at the National Manufacturers' Association's headquarters in Traverse City, Michigan.
Wheeler said that the EPA and the U.S. Army would reinstate water rules that were issued in the 1980s, and would begin re-defining which waterways can be regulated, a task to be completed by this winter.

'Today´s Step 1 action fulfills a key promise of President Trump and sets the stage for Step 2 - a new WOTUS definition that will provide greater regulatory certainty for farmers, landowners, home builders, and developers nationwide,' Wheeler said in a statement.

'This action officially ends an egregious power grab and sets the stage for a new rule that will provide much-needed regulatory certainty for farmers, home builders and property owners nationwide,' Wheeler and R.D. James, assistant secretary of the Army for civil works, wrote in a column published Thursday by the Des Moines Register.  
Since enactment of the Clean Water Act in 1972, the federal government has gone beyond protection of navigable waterways and their major tributaries to assert jurisdiction over 'isolated ponds and channels that flow only after it rains,' the officials wrote.
'As the definition expanded, so too has Washington's power over private property and the states' traditional authority to regulate their land and water resources,' they said.
'This final rule reestablishes national consistency across the country,' said James, assistant secretary of the U.S. Army for civil works. He said it will eliminate the 'patchwork' of definitions of waterways regulated under the Clean Water Act as a result of various court decisions enjoining the 2015 rule.
The Obama-era rule had been in place in 22 states, the District of Columbia and U.S. territories while the 1980s-era regulations were in place in 27 states.
President Barack Obama's Waters of the United States rule had defined which streams and wetlands are protected by the 1972 Clean Water Act from pollutants including pesticides, fertilizers and mine waste. Farmers and industry groups had said the rule went too far, impeding their operations by extending restrictions to small, un-navigable waters.
Environmentalists say the move would leave millions of Americans with less safe drinking water and allow damage of wetlands that prevent flooding, filter pollutants and provide habitat for a multitude of fish, waterfowl and other wildlife.

The Natural Resources Defense Council said the Trump administration's action would be challenged in court.
'The Clean Water Rule represented solid science and smart public policy,' it said in a statement. 'Where it has been enforced, it has protected important waterways and wetlands, providing certainty to all stakeholders.'
But Don Parrish, congressional relations director for the American Farm Bureau Federation, says the 2015 regulation that extended federal protection to many U.S. wetlands and waterways created uncertainty about where farmers could cultivate land.
'It would be great if farmers didn't have to hire an army of consultants and lawyers just to be able to farm,' he said.
Republican Sen. Kevin Cramer of North Dakota says the Obama rule was 'an unconstitutional power grab that did nothing to advance good water management.'
The question of which waters are covered under the Clean Water Act has inspired decades of lawsuits and congressional debate.
A sharply divided Supreme Court in 2006 produced three differing opinions, leading the Obama administration to craft its rule.
It provided federal oversight to upstream tributaries and headwaters, including wetlands, ponds, lakes and streams that can affect the quality of navigable waters.
The regulation drew quick legal challenges. Courts prevented it from taking effect in parts of the U.S.
Betsy Southerland, who was director of science and technology in EPA's Office of Water during the Obama administration, said repealing its regulation would create further regulatory confusion.
'This repeal is a victory for land developers, oil and gas drillers and miners who will exploit that ambiguity to dredge and fill small streams and wetlands that were protected from destruction by the 2015 rule because of their critical impact on national water quality,' Southerland said.

Gregory Cheadle, 62, told PBS NewsHour Thursday that after almost two decades as a Republican, he has decided to run for a House seat as an independent in 2020.
Cheadle gained national attention during the 2016 presidential campaign, when then-candidate Trump pointed to him during a rally in Redding, California.
'Look at my African American over here. Look at him. Are you the greatest?' he said of Cheadle.    

The real estate broker said he now feels the current administration is using black people as 'political pawns' – but didn't go so far to call the president 'racist.'
'President Trump is a rich guy who is mired in white privilege to the extreme,' Cheadle said. 'Republicans are too sheepish to call him out on anything and they are afraid of losing their positions and losing any power themselves.'

Cheadle, who supports the Republican approach to the economy, said the final straw was when he watch Republicans defend the president after he told the so-called 'squad' of minority congresswomen to 'go back' to their countries of origin.
'Why don't they go back and help fix the totally broken and crime infested places from which they came,' Trump tweeted of Representatives Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Ilhan Omar, Rashida Tlaib and Ayanna Pressley. 'Then come back and show us how it is done.'
He also said he was turned off to Trump when this summer the president attacked Democratic Representative Elijah Cummings as driving Baltimore, Maryland – a city he represents – into the ground.
The president then called Baltimore a 'disgusting, rat and rodent infested mess,' claiming no human being would want to live there.
The White House has defended the president on both counts, claiming neither his attacks on the 'squad' of freshmen representatives or Cummings were racially charged.
Cheadle said he wouldn't use the term 'racist,' as others have, but said he believes the president has a 'white superiority complex.'
Although he initially took the president's comments as a joke and laughed along with the crowd, Cheadle now says his view of the moment has changed.

Trump was asked about Cheadle's move when he left the White House Thursday, but said he did not know what the question was about.
'I'm more critical of it today than I was back then because today I wonder to what extent he said that for political gain or for attention,' he said.
Cheadle admits that he may have waited too long to leave the Republican party, which he joined in 2001, after Trump became president – but said he was holding out hope in the party.
He hoped the GOP, with Trump as president, would work on challenges facing African Americans like healthcare and wealth disparities.
Cheadle also said he hoped Trump would nominate a more diverse batch of judges.
'When you look at his appointments for the bench: White, white, white, white white, white, white,' Cheadle said. 'That to me is really damning to everybody else because no one else gets a chance because he's thinking that the whites are superior, period.'
Trump, Cheadle says, has a 'pro-white' agenda.
As a born-again independent, Cheadle says he would be open to voting for candidates of any party as long as he feels their platforms will help advance the African American community.
His run in 2020 will be Cheadle's fifth attempt to earn a seat in Congress. In 2018, he ran for the same seat he's seeking in 2020 in California's First Congressional District.
Trump was asked about Cheadle's move when he left the White House Thursday, but said he did not know what the question was about.
'I have tremendous African American support. I am at my all time high. I don’t think I’ve ever had the support I have now,' he said.
'We’ve had the best numbers we’ve ever had for African Americans in terms of employment and unemployment. So I think we’re going to do very well.'

A gay married couple in Maryland are suing the Trump administration after the State Department refused to recognize their infant daughter as an American citizen.
Roee and Adiel Kiviti of Chevy Chase opened the federal lawsuit on Thursday because they believe the Immigration and Nationality Act unlawfully discriminates against same-sex married couples by treating their children like they were born out of wedlock. 
The couple are both naturalized U.S. citizens who were born in Israel, with Roee moving to the U.S. in 1982 and Adiel arriving in May 2015.

Kessem (pictured), who was born in Canada by surrogacy, will be considered an undocumented citizen by this weekend
Their daughter, Kessem Kiviti, was born in Canada this year via a gestational surrogacy in February using a donated egg and Adiel's sperm.

According to The Daily Beast, the couple contacted the U.S. consulate in Calgary to get a Consular Report of Birth Abroad, basically a birth certificate, for Kessem.
Roee told The Daily Beast: 'They first indicated that they needed proof of our marriage, which I found quite odd.
'They needed the original marriage certificate, which we didn't have with us, but I didn't actually think anything more about it. 
'I thought, "We don't have time for this, we'll just deal with it in the U.S."'
The Kivitis later went to obtain an official U.S. passport for their daughter, but were met with skepticism by officials. 
'We sort of naively thought that this is just a big mistake. That once the government realized, perhaps through media, that this was a mistake, it would be sort of rectified,' Roee said. 
They reportedly thought nothing of it because they were both U.S. citizens, named on Kessem's birth certificate and their eldest child who was also born in Canada, Lev, had easily secured a passport when he was born in 2016.

However, they soon learned it was actually the policy enforced by the Trump administration that was blocking their daughter's citizenship.
Problems arising with the policy stem from how the State Department interpret the Immigration and Nationality Act.

As of 2014, the State Department viewed the policy to mean a child born abroad 'must be biologically related to a U.S. citizen parent.'
Children born abroad by reproductive technology, even if the parents are legally U.S. citizens, are considered out of wedlock.
The policy as it stands now could tear the Kiviti family apart.
Adiel told The Daily Beast: 'The scenario that we are now in doesn't allow us, in the long run, to live in the U.S. as a family.'
'We're talking about two parents who are American citizens, an older brother who is an American citizen, and a newborn who is not an American citizen. If this is not going to get resolved, we have to leave the United States.'

Children born out of wedlock face more challenges when trying to become eligible for birthright citizenship.
This includes DNA tests, testimony proving the parents are financially able support the child and stringent parental residency laws that make it difficult for families.
In the Kivitis' case, Kessem's biological father, Adiel, is a U.S. citizen but has only lived in the country four years and ten months – just two months shy of the five-year requirement.
Adiel said: 'The scenario that we are now in doesn't allow us, in the long run, to live in the U.S. as And the clock is ticking, as Kessem will be considered an undocumented immigrant after this weekend.

Aaron Morris, the executive director of LGBTQ legal non-profit Immigration Equality, told the Daily Beast that this lawsuit is one of four currently filed against the State Department.
'This is a fight for marriage equality; this is a fight for the fundamental right to citizenship and denying a little girl citizenship just because she happens to have two gay dads is intolerable.'
Despite outcry from the public, the State Department still holds closely to the current interpretation.
'The hope is that if they keep losing cases, they will voluntarily take it upon themselves to change their policy,' Morris said. 'I'm not sure how many times a district court needs to tell them that they're contrary to the will of Congress and the law, but we will bring suits until and unless they change the policy.' 
The suit names Secretary of State Mike Pompeo as the only defendant.
The State Department has not commented on the upcoming litigation.[/size]

Greta Thunberg, the 16-year-old Swedish girl who is criss-crossing the globe to save it from global warming, said Friday that despite being the star attraction at a Washington, D.C. protest, she wasn't trying to communicate anything to the U.S. government.
As a few hundred 'striking' schoolchildren assembled near the White House for a march, DailyMail.com asked Thunberg from about 10 feet away: 'Do you have a message for President Trump?'
'No,' came the reply. The young activist had the same answer to an identical question about whether she had a message for the U.S. Congress.
DailyMail.com asked the question twice to be sure Thunberg, who has the developmental disorder Asperger syndrome, heard and understood it.

The Trump administration is openly skeptical about global warming, and the president has claimed the idea of man-made climate change is a 'hoax' instigated by China 'in order to make U.S. manufacturing non-competitive.'

He has withdrawn the United States from the Paris climate accord, and the Republican-controlled U.S. Senate shows no sign of acting on a Democratic House bill to reverse that move.
Trump has also mocked global warming activists and their Democratic Party allies during winter months as president, gloating on Twitter every time a cold snap hits the Northeast U.S.
He softened his position during a '60 Minutes' interview in 2018, allowing that 'Something’s changing' in the global climate, but 'it’ll change back again.'
'I don’t think it’s a hoax,' he added then, 'But I don’t know that it’s manmade. I will say this. I don’t wanna give trillions and trillions of dollars. I don’t wanna lose millions and millions of jobs.'
Friday's rally ended with a brief speech from Thunberg, who congratulated marchers for skipping school but didn't lodge any demands for America to change.

'I'm so incredibly grateful for every single one of you,' she told the group, and I'm so proud of you.'
'Never give up. We will continue,' she said.
Climate demonstrations in Europe have generated far larger turnout when the pixieish Thunberg is scheduled to appear. And unlike her quiet approach to Washington, she has leveled ultimatums there.
'For way too long the politicians and the people in power have gotten away with not doing anything ... But we will make sure that they will not get away with it any longer," she said during a London rally in April.
Thousands showed up in Rome to hear her speak.

Felicity Huffman issued a public apology on Friday after she was sentenced to two weeks in federal prison for paying to inflate her daughter's college admission test scores.
'I accept the court’s decision today without reservation,' the Desperate Housewives star wrote in her statement. 
'I have always been prepared to accept whatever punishment Judge [Indira] Talwani [of the United States District Court for the District of Massachusetts] imposed. 
'I broke the law. I have admitted that and I pleaded guilty to this crime. 

'There are no excuses or justifications for my actions. Period.
'I would like to apologize again to my daughter, my husband, my family and the educational community for my actions. 
'And I especially want to apologize to the students who work hard every day to get into college, and to their parents who make tremendous sacrifices supporting their children.'

Meanwhile, as Huffman prepares to serve her prison sentence, fellow actor Lori Loughlin, who along with husband Mossimo Giannulli has also been charged in the college bribery scandal, is reported to be closely following the latest legal developments in the case.
Unlike Huffman and several other defendants who have made plea agreements with federal prosecutors, Loughlin and Giannulli pleaded not guilty. 
'Lori is aware of Felicity’s sentence, and is processing what that means for her,' a source close to the Full House star told PEOPLE. 
'Her only move now is to take this to court and to prove that she is not guilty of what she’s charged with.' 
While Huffman received two weeks in prison for paying $15,000 to inflate her daughter's SAT scores, Loughlin is alleged to have paid $500,000 to fraudulently have her daughters admitted to the University of Southern California by claiming membership on the crew team. 
If convicted, Loughlin faces a maximum of 40 years in prison, though legal observers doubt that a judge would impose that harsh of a sentence.

'If she’s found guilty, she will go to jail; that is clear,' the source close to Loughlin told PEOPLE. 
'And if another deal is offered to her, which I don’t think it will be, she will go to jail. Her only chance of avoiding jail is to beat these charges. 
'Lori is a smart woman; she understands that. 
'She’s scared and upset, but she’s resolved to be strong and to fight this. 
'She will do what she has to do to protect herself and her family.'
The source added that Loughlin now regrets not taking a plea deal when she had an opportunity to do so shortly after her arrest.
'She didn’t understand the entire nature of the charges against her, and she wasn’t even sure if or how she had broken the law,' the source said. 
'It was very early, and she didn’t have all the information that she has now. 
'Based on what she understood at the time, she made the best choice for herself. 
'Now there is no deal on the table, and she has to have faith that the courts and the prosecution will move fairly and not make an example out of her.'
The source added: 'This has been a rough day. 
'Lori is going to move forward as best as she can, but now she has a little more clarity about what will happen next.' 
In addition to her 14-day prison sentence, Huffman was also sentenced to a year of probation for paying a five-figure bribe in exchange for a proctor falsifying her daughter's standardized aptitude test to get the teen a higher score.

The actress, 56, addressed the court just moments before she learned her fate, breaking down in tears as she said: 'I have inflicted more damage than I could’ve ever imagined.' 
She then admitted her guilt once more and told the judge her actions were 'frightened, stupid and so wrong,' and added that she deserved whatever sentence was handed down. 
That tearful display came almost 30 minutes after the hearing kicked off with the federal prosecutor assigned to the case reprimanding the actions that resulted in Huffman's indictment and ridiculing her excuses.
Right off the bat, the prosecution commented on Huffman's claim that it was her 'parental anxiety' that lead her to bribe an official in order to guarantee her daughter a better SAT test score.
'With all due respect to the defendant, welcome to parenthood,' said Assistant US Attorney Eric Rosen.
'There's no instruction manual. Parenthood is exhausting and stressful, but that's what every parent goes through.' 
He later noted: 'Parenthood does not make you a felon or make you cheat. It makes you serve as a positive role model.'   
Prosecutors reiterated their sentencing recommendation to the court on Friday by very plainly stating: 'The defendant, Felicity Huffman, must go to jail for one month because the only meaningful and sufficient sanction for he criminal activity she engaged in is prison.' 
Huffman was ordered to self-report to a facility determined by the Bureau of Prisons on October 25 by Judge Indira Talwani, who shared with the court how she arrived at her ruling after hearing from prosecutors, the defense and Huffman.   
'The outrage in this case is a system that is already so distorted by money and privilege in the first place,' noted Judge Indira Talwani. 
'And that in a system in that context, that you took the step of having one more advantage to put your child ahead.'  
Huffman was later seen being comforted by her husband, and left the courthouse around 4pm with tears in her eyes.

'Punishment is doing something they don’t want to do, not something she already does and enjoys.'
As for the financial penalty suggested by the defense, Rosen stated: 'A $20,000 fine for someone worth in the tens of millions amounts to little more than a rounding error.'
Rosen also came armed with a number of cases where lower-class Americans who committed similar offenses for far more altruistic reasons were sent to prison. 
'Wealthy people who get their picture taken get off, poor people who garner little more than a press release go to jail,' said Rosen. 
'In prison, there is no paparazzi, in prison everyone is treated the same, wears the same clothes and is subject to the same rules.' 
One of those cases, in Akron, Ohio, resulted in a mother being sentenced to 10 days in jail because she wanted her daughter to get into a better public school and falsified her address.
'If a poor, single mom from Akron goes to jail, there is no reason why a wealthy, privileged mother should avoid the same fate,' said Rosen.  
He also took aim at Huffman's decision to cite her frayed relationship with her two daughters in her letter to the court. 
Huffman spoke about that herself later in the hearing, saying: 'She said to me, "I don't know who you are anymore, mom." Then she asked, "Why didn't you believe in me? Why didn't you think I could do it on my own?"'
Rosen launched into his impassioned plea for prison time just minutes after Macy and Huffman made it past the media and into the court.
Macy was overheard saying 'that wasn't that bad' to his wife as they took their seats, not knowing they were soon to be eviscerated by a federal prosecutor. 
Prosecutors made a few not-so-subtle references to Huffman's fame and fortune in their sentencing memo, suggesting that probation at her California compound would be more like a vacation.
'Neither probation nor home confinement (in a large home in the Hollywood Hills with an infinity pool) would constitute meaningful punishment or deter others from committing similar crimes,' read the court filing submitted last week.


A somber Huffman touched down in Boston on Wednesday with her husband ahead of her appearance in federal court.
The Oscar-nominated actress was in no mood to talk and hid behind a cap and sunglasses as she made her way though Logan International Airport.
Huffman was much more open in the letter she wrote to Judge Indira Talwani prior to her arrival in Boston. 
In that letter, which was obtained by DailyMail.com, Huffman detailed the tearful confrontation she had with her daughter after her arrest.
That same court filing also revealed that on the morning of Huffman's arrest, her teenage daughters woke up to find FBI agents with guns drawn to their heads.  
'I have broken the law, deceived the educational community, betrayed my daughter, and failed my family,' wrote Huffman in her letter to Judge Talwani.
'When my daughter looked at me and asked with tears streaming down her face, "Why didn't you believe in me? Why didn't you think I could do it on my own?" I had no adequate answer for her.'
Huffman continued: 'I could only say, "I am sorry. I was frightened and I was stupid."'
She then explained how this one decision caused her entire life to fall apart. 
'In my blind panic, I have done the exact thing that I was desperate to avoid,' said Huffman.
'I have compromised my daughter's culture, the wholeness of my family and my own integrity.'  
The actress also got support from over 30 friends and family members, with her siblings, Eva Longoria, Macy, Desperate Housewives creator Marc Cherry and more writing letters on her behalf that were filed in court.   
In an odd twist, the judge's decision means Huffman could spend next Sunday night at the Emmy Awards. 
Her Netflix series When They See Us is nominated for 16 Emmys, though she was not among the acting nominees for her work on the program. 
Huffman portrays Linda Fairstein, the former chief of the sex crimes unit at the Manhattan District Attorney's office, in When They See Us, which is directed by Ava DuVernay.  
The actress has been nominated for five Emmys and won the award for Outstanding Lead Actress in 2005 for her work on Desperate Housewives.

Huffman admitted to paying $15,000 to a fake charity to facilitate cheating on her daughter Sofia's SATs in April.
US Attorney Andrew Lelling recommended in filings submitted last week in Boston that Huffman spend 30 days in jail because she acted 'out of a sense of entitlement, or at least moral cluelessness.'
Huffman's lawyers argued she should get a year of probation, 250 hours of community service and a $20,000 fine instead.
Her lawyers said in their reply to this memo on Thursday that prosecutors were 'comparing apples to oranges' in the case law they cited in their brief. 
Federal documents show that while Huffman worked alone to iron out the details when the couple's first daughter had her SAT changed by a proctor to improve her score, Macy was aware of the situation and the payment came from the couple's joint account.
He in turn took a more active role in organizing the younger daughter's fraudulent SAT, agreeing to the money and a set place and time much like his wife had done one year prior with their other child.
In that case however, the couple's daughter achieved the results she had hoped for on her own and the mastermind behind the operation was informed that she would not be needing to submit a fraudulent score. 
Huffman paid a $15,000 'charitable contribution 'to participate in the college entrance exam cheating scheme on behalf of her eldest daughter,' states the complaint.
'Huffman later made arrangements to pursue the scheme a second time, for her younger daughter, before deciding not to do so,' according to the documents.
The charging documents state that Huffman had the site where her daughter took the SATs moved from her own high school to a test center West Hollywood.
That was to avoid a teacher who knew the girl, who had also applied for and received extended time to take the test, from being present.
The girl's test was then administered by a proctor who had flown in from Tampa and told investigators that he 'facilitated cheating, either by correcting the student's answers after the test or by actively assisting the student during the exam.'
That proctor, Mark Ridell, has also been charged.
In this case, Huffman's daughter scored a 1420, which was a 400 point improvement from her PSAT results just one year prior.
Soon after the proctor was paid $40,000 by Key Worldwide Foundation, the same organization that Huffman would later give a $15,000 donation to, according to the documents.
The documents also include the transcript of a phone call between Huffman and the individual who facilitated the test in which she admits that her older daughter had assistance and expresses her desire for her younger daughter to get similar help.
In a follow up call just this past December, Huffman and her unnamed spouse spoke about their daughter wanting to get into Georgetown.
It was then decided that the young girl would take the exam twice, once on her own and once with help, to ensure she got the score necessary to get her into Georgetown, it is claimed.
Then, at the last second, the couple decided not to have their daughter take the test with assistance.

Loughlin is still in the pre-trial phase, with the Full House star fighting back hard and entering a not guilty plea against the claims she paid to get her eldest daughter into USC.
Loughlin and her husband are facing jail time because they opted to use the athletics route to gain their daughters admittance into University of Southern California.
This required daughters Isabella and Olivia, who had never before rowed in their lives, to pretend they were on crew teams.
In order to sell that, they posed for photos on ergometers, suggesting that they were both aware and willing participants in their parents' plan.
Furthermore, Olivia knowingly had Singer's team fill out her college applications according to the complaint.
'On or about December 12, 2017, Loughlin e-mailed [Singer], copying Giannulli and their younger daughter [Olivia], to request guidance on how to complete the formal USC application, in the wake of her daughter’s provisional acceptance as a recruited athlete,' states the complaint.
'Loughlin wrote: "[Our younger daughter] has not submitted all her colleges [sic] apps and is confused on how to do so. I want to make sure she gets those in as I don’t want to call any attention to [her] with our little friend at [her high school]. Can you tell us how to proceed?"'
In response, Singer wrote an email 'directing an employee to submit the applications on behalf of the Giannullis’ younger daughter [Olivia].
Loughlin and Giannulli 'agreed to pay bribes totaling $500,000 in exchange for having their two daughters designated as recruits to the USC crew team - despite the fact that they did not participate in crew - thereby facilitating their admission to USC,' according to the documents.
The couple emailed Singer in 2016 about their daughters college prospects, stating that they wanted to do the necessary work to see that the girls got into USC as opposed to ASU.

BOSTON — Felicity Huffman is hoping to avoid serving hard time.
Lawyers for Huffman, who reports to prison on Oct. 25, requested Friday that the actress spend her two weeks behind bars at a minimum-security women’s lockup in northern California dubbed one of the cushiest prisons in the country.
The Federal Correctional Institution Dublin houses 1,235 inmates and sits about 350 miles away from her Los Angeles home.
While it’s ultimately the decision of the Federal Bureau of Prisons, attorney Martin Murphy asked Judge Indira Talwani make the recommendation so the desperate inmate could see her family.
“It’s the closest to Ms. Huffman’s residence,” Murphy said inside the packed courtroom.
As a Dublin inmate, the “Desperate Housewives” star would have to trade her designer duds for the prison’s issued uniform: dowdy khaki clothing marked with her name and inmate number.
Huffman, 56, will have to make her bed each morning in time for a daily 6:30 a.m. inspection and it will be lights out at 10 p.m. daily, according to the inmate handbook.
Husband William H. Macy and her two daughters will be able to visit on Saturday and Sundays between the hours of 8 a.m. and 2 p.m. but will not be able to bring any gifts.
“Visitors may bring a maximum of $35.00 per adult. Money can only be used for the vending machines in the Visiting Room and may not be given to the inmate,” the handbook states.
In 2009, Forbes named the big-house as one of America’s “10 cushiest prisons” — citing the facilities gorgeous bay area weather.
The prison was formerly home to Heidi Fleiss — the “Hollywood Madam” who ran an upscale prostitution ring in Los Angeles — and Sarah Jane Moore, the woman who attempted to assassinate President Gerald Ford.

Despite being a sitcom star, Huffman will also be restricted to the $320 monthly commissary limit.
Highlights on the commissary list include the $3.65 pizza kit and the $2.10 two-pack of Oreos.
To kill time, Huffman and her inmate pals can watch movies shown on weekdays at 11 a.m. and 5 p.m.
It’s unclear if the Emmy Award-winner will be put on a work assignment given her short stint behind bars.
Dublin inmates are generally expected to remain on a work assignment for a minimum of 90 days., according to the handbook.
Lawyer Frank Perrone told The Post that Dublin was the most obvious choice because of it’s proximity to her Los Angeles home.
“It’s located 20 miles southeast of Oakland,” said Perrone, a former prosecutor.
He added that the Federal Bureau of Prisons won’t send defendants more than 500 miles from their residence, so there’s no chance she’ll wind up on the East Coast.

I know there are a million reasons why what she did was wrong and that it was unfair to buy a spot for her daughter, but I still feel sorry for her. Because she's a celebrity she's taking the heat for a lot of other people who did/do the same thing and they never face consequences. How many libraries and gyms have been "donated" by the parents of a less-than-stellar student who suddenly becomes ivy-league acceptable? How many endowments are the direct result of a rich person having a stupid child? Huffman may still not have realised why what she did was wrong, but I do think she's contrite.

Lori Laughlin, on the other hand, seems to me to have understood all along all the ramifications of what she was doing but didn't care because it was her kids. What bothers me even more is that her daughter didn't even want to go to college, but Laughlin insisted on stealing a seat for her anyway! I can't wait to hear her "prove" that she's innocent. To me she seems like the definition of elite privilege.

PAN - I honestly don't know how widespread the practice is because I don't travel in the circles that can afford to bribe their kids' way into a prestige college. The people I know either pay their own way or earn scholarships. I do know that if you're rich enough, and selfish enough, you can find a way to buy your kid into a good school even though it means a more qualified student won't get in. It might be a scam like this was (cheating on exams or lying about accomplishments) or it might be through huge donations to the college of your choice. They're not likely to turn your kid down if you just built them a new arts building or football stadium. Then there's the legacy student who gets in because his rich parent is an alumnus of the college.

Bottom line, rich people have an advantage over everyone else in this area just like every other.

I don't feel sorry for any of them, bottom line your a celebrity you know what is right and wrong. You also know if it is 
made public you will be called out and embarrassed. 14 days not even the full 30 that is not punishment that is a slap on the wrist and she will probably go to a nice little prison.

It's all over every conceivable outlet here, Lizzy, with loads of US kids wanting to talk about the effect it has on them.

Here in the UK there are many many parents who pay for endless after-school tutoring from an early age (I know of at least one example. Age? 3) who after day-long school they are then shuttled off to yet another lesson. Problem with that is the consequences of that further down the line - anti-depressants from an early age - no play - feelings of inadequacy - and not making their own choices

President Donald Trump took aim at MSNBC host Joy Reid in an incendiary morning tweet on Saturday.
'Who the hell is Joy-Ann Reid?' tweeted the president just after 9am. 
It was unclear if Trump was responding to Reid's subbing for MSNBC colleague Chris Hayes' primetime show the night before where she was critical of the president, or her recently published book, which is about the presidency.
'Never met her, she knows ZERO about me, has NO talent, and truly doesn't have the "it" factor needed for success in showbiz,' he continued in the tweet.

The president concluded with Reid: 'Had a bad reputation, and now works for the Comcast/NBC losers making up phony stories about me. Low Ratings. Fake News!'

Filling in for Hayes, Reid poked fun at Trump's gaffe Thursday night in Baltimore at a Republican retreat, when he mistakenly referred to the vice president as 'Mike Pounce.' 
She also joked that the president gave his fellow Republicans 'smoking hot beauty tips,' in a reference to Trump's suggestion this week that energy-efficient light bulbs were to blame for his orange complexion.
Reid, a progressive, also fired back at Trump for sounding 'desperate' when he remarked that the country would 'go to Hell' if any of his opponents won the 2020 election. 
A tweet from Reid earlier this month that Trump 'has turned the presidency into a travel agency servicing the Trump Organization and its properties and golf clubs around the world,' probably didn't help her win the president's approval either.

Donald Trump says America is 'locked and loaded' as it waits for confirmation Iran was behind drone attacks on Saudi oil plants on Saturday, after Tehran warned America it was 'ready for full-fledged war'.
The President tweeted on Sunday night: 'Saudi Arabia oil supply was attacked. There is reason to believe that we know the culprit, are locked and loaded depending on verification, but are waiting to hear from the Kingdom as to who they believe was the cause of this attack, and under what terms we would proceed!' 
The extraordinary statement suggesting Saudi Arabia will have a say in how the US moves forward was quickly slammed by critics, including presidential hopeful Beto O'Rourke, who tweeted: 'As President I will not go to war for Saudi Arabia, nor will I let Saudi Arabia dictate our foreign policy.' 
And on Sunday night a senior Trump administration official told ABC News Iran actually launched close to a dozen cruise missiles and more than 20 drones from its territory during the attack on Saturday. 

The regime in Tehran has denied any involvement in the blasts, describing accusations against it 'unacceptable' and 'baseless'. Iran-backed Houthi rebels, which operate out of Yemen, have officially claimed responsibility. 
Attacks on the world's largest oil refinery at Abqaiq and an oil field at Khurais have knocked out more than half of Saudi crude output, or five per cent of global supply.

Attacks on two plants at the heart of the kingdom's oil industry Saturday knocked out more than half of Saudi crude output. Smoke is seen coming from the factory in Abqaiq, Saudi Arabia
Global energy prices spiked Monday as a result, as the markets absorbed the impact of the largest disruption to supplies in history.
Benchmark Brent crude gained nearly 20 per cent in the first moments of trading Monday before settling down to 10 per cent higher as trading continued. A barrel of Brent traded up $6 to $66.28.
U.S. benchmark West Texas crude was up around 9 per cent. U.S. gasoline and heating oil similarly were up over 8 per cent and 7 per cent respectively before markets opened in New York.
Analysts described the attacks as a 'turning point' for world oil markets that had been buoyed up by the impression of plentiful supply created by the shale gas boom in America, which has lessened its dependence on imports.
The blasts prove that the US is still vulnerable to cuts in supply, particularly as the Arabian Gulf descends towards all-out conflict.
RBC Capital Markets, an energy industry analyst, said: 'From our standpoint, we see today's attacks pushing the region ever closer to a military confrontation.
'All summer, oil has been a broken barometer for gauging the pressure building in the region but it may be time for recalibration.' 
Trump's tweets followed a National Security Council meeting at the White House that included Vice President Mike Pence, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and Defense Secretary Mark Esper.
A US official, speaking on the condition of anonymity, said all options, including a military response, were on the table, but said no decisions had been made Sunday. 
Trump's warning to Iran came after a senior Revolutionary Guard commander told the US that Iran was 'ready for full-fledged war'. 


Amirali Hajizadeh, head of Iran's Revolutionary Guards Corps Aerospace Force, warned that US military bases were within range of Iranian missiles. 
He told Tasnim news agency: 'Everybody should know that all American bases and their aircraft carriers in a distance of up to 2,000km around Iran are within the range of our missiles.' 
Shortly before 6pm ET, Trump said he has approved the release of US strategic petroleum reserves 'if needed' to stabilize energy markets.
He tweeted that the attacks could have an impact on oil prices and says the final amount of the release, if any, would be 'sufficient to keep the markets well-supplied.' 
The federally owned petroleum reserve of hundreds of millions of barrels of crude oil has only been tapped three times, most recently in 2011 amid unrest in Libya. 
The President then appeared to dispute comments of senior aides, including Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin, saying he would be willing to meet with Iranian President Hassan Rouhani without precondition.
He tweeted: 'The Fake News is saying that I am willing to meet with Iran, "No Conditions." That is an incorrect statement.'
But Mnuchin said Thursday that Trump had made clear 'he would sit down with Rouhani with no condition.' And Pompeo told reporters days earlier that 'the president has made clear he is happy to take a meeting with no preconditions.'
Iran has said it is unwilling to meet with Trump while crushing sanctions are in place over its nuclear program.

The US government produced satellite photos showing what officials said were at least 19 points of impact at two Saudi energy facilities, including damage at the heart of the kingdom's crucial oil processing plant at Abqaiq. 
Officials said the photos show impacts consistent with the attack coming from the direction of Iran or Iraq, rather than from Yemen to the south.
Iraq denied that its territory was used for an attack on the kingdom. US officials said a strike from there would be a violation of Iraq's sovereignty.
The US officials said additional devices, which apparently didn't reach their targets, were recovered northwest of the facilities and are being jointly analyzed by Saudi and American intelligence. 
The officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss intelligence matters, did not address whether the drone could have been fired from Yemen, then taken a round-about path, but did not explicitly rule it out. 
Crude oil prices shot up 9.5% to $60 after trading opened Sunday evening in New York. A spike in oil prices could have negative effects for the global economy.
The attack interrupted the production of 5.7 million barrels a day.
The Wall Street Journal cited Saudi officials as saying a third of output would be restored on Monday, but a return to full production may take weeks. The Saudis say they will use other facilities and existing stocks to supplant the plant's production.
Experts have warned oil prices could nearly double to as much as $100 a barrel.  
Tilak Doshi from Muse, Stancil and Co, said: 'In the oil universe, this attack is perhaps equivalent to the 9/11 attacks. Abqaiq is easily the world's single most important oil production and processing infrastructure site.'

Iran's foreign ministry on Saturday dismissed US accusations it was behind drone attacks on Saudi oil installations as 'meaningless', suggesting they were a pretext to retaliate against the Islamic republic.
Infernos raged at the plant in Abqaiq, Bugayg, and the country's second largest oilfield in Khurais after Tehran-backed Houthi rebels in Yemen fired a flurry of rockets.

In a statement released by the Saudi Press Agency, Prince Abdulaziz bin Salman bin Abdulaziz says explosions at Saudi Aramco's Khurais and Abqaiq plants caused several fires that were controlled, but there were no injuries. 
Prince Abdulaziz says the attacks were aimed not only at Saudi Arabia, but also at the world's oil supply and its security.
Iran's foreign minister Mohammed Javad Zarif said Washington and its allies were 'stuck in Yemen' and that blaming Tehran 'won't end the disaster'.     
Pompeo laid the sole blame at the feet of the Iranian regime, who he accused of mounting an 'unprecedented attack on the world's energy supply'. 
President Trump's bullish diplomat tweeted: 'Tehran is behind nearly 100 attacks on Saudi Arabia while Rouhani and Zarif pretend to engage in diplomacy. 
'Amid all the calls for de-escalation, Iran has now launched an unprecedented attack on the world's energy supply. There is no evidence the attacks came from Yemen.' 
Houthi  military spokesman Yahia Sarie announced that the Houthi's were taking responsibility for the attacks on Saturday in a televised address carried by the Houthi's Al-Masirah satellite news channel.

He said the Houthis sent 10 drones to attack an oil processing facility in Buqyaq and the Khurais oil field, warning that attacks by the rebels against the kingdom would only get worse if the war in Yemen continues.
Sarie said: 'The only option for the Saudi government is to stop attacking us.'  
Iran denies supplying the Houthis with weapons, although the UN, the West and Gulf Arab nations say Tehran does. Drone models nearly identical to those used by Iran have been used in the conflict in Yemen.  
The attacks highlight how the increasingly advanced weaponry of the Iran-linked Houthi rebels - from ballistic missiles to unmanned drones - poses a serious threat to oil installations in Saudi Arabia, the world's top crude exporter.  
Trump called Saudi Arabia's Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman in the wake of the drone strikes and expressed the United States' readiness to cooperate with the kingdom in supporting its security and stability.

Saudi de facto ruler, bin Salman told Trump that Riyadh was willing and able to deal with the 'terrorist aggression'.
A senior Emirati official said the UAE, Riyadh's main partner in the Western-backed military coalition in Yemen, would fully support Saudi Arabia as the assault 'targets us all'.
Trump said recent attacks against Saudi state-run oil facilities have had a negative impact on the US and global economies. 
The attack comes after Trump said a meeting with Rouhani was possible at the United Nations General Assembly in New York this month. 
White House adviser Kellyanne Conway did not rule out a possible meeting between the two but told Fox News Sunday that the strikes 'did not help that prospect'. 
The attack will likely heighten tensions further across the wider Persian Gulf amid a confrontation between the US and Iran over its unraveling nuclear deal with world powers. 
Saudi Aramco operates the world's largest oil processing facility and crude oil stabilization plant in the world at Abqaiq, in eastern Saudi Arabia. The plant has a crude oil processing capacity of more than 7 million barrels per day.  
The facility, which processes sour crude oil into sweet crude, then later transports onto transshipment points on the Persian Gulf and the Red Sea, has been targeted in the past by militants. 
Al-Qaida claimed suicide bombers tried but failed to attack the oil complex in February 2006. 
A Saudi-led coalition has been battling Houthi rebels since March 2015. The Iranian-backed Houthis hold Yemen's capital, Sana'a, and other territory in the Arab world's poorest country.
The violence has pushed Yemen to the brink of famine and killed more than 90,000 people since 2015, according to the US-based Armed Conflict Location & Event Data Project, or ACLED, which tracks the conflict.
Since the start of the Saudi-led war, Houthi rebels have been using drones in combat. The first appeared to be off-the-shelf, hobby-kit-style drones. 
Later, versions nearly identical to Iranian models turned up.

The fires at Abqaiq, which contains the world's largest oil processing plant, and Khurais, which contains the country's second largest oilfield, were brought under control 




The rebels have flown drones into the radar arrays of Saudi Arabia's Patriot missile batteries, according to Conflict Armament Research, disabling them and allowing the Houthis to fire ballistic missiles into the kingdom unchallenged. 
The Houthis launched drone attacks targeting Saudi Arabia's crucial East-West Pipeline in May as tensions heightened between Iran and the US. 
In August, Houthi drones struck Saudi Arabia's Shaybah oil field, which produces some 1 million barrels of crude oil a day near its border with the United Arab Emirates.
U.N. investigators said the Houthis' new UAV-X drone, found in recent months during the Saudi-led coalition's war in Yemen, likely has a range of up to 930 miles.
That puts the far reaches of both Saudi Arabia and the UAE in range.  
The interior ministry said in a statement carried by the official Saudi Press Agency: 'At 4.00am the industrial security teams of Aramco started dealing with fires at two of its facilities in Abqaiq and Khurais as a result of... drones.
'The two fires have been controlled.'

The statement added that an investigation had been launched after the attack in the kingdom's Eastern Province. 
In recent months, the Houthi rebels have carried out a spate of cross-border missile and drone attacks targeting Saudi air bases and other facilities in what it says is retaliation for a Saudi-led air war on rebel-held areas of Yemen.  
Tensions in the Gulf have soared since May, with Trump calling off air strikes against Iran at the last minute in June after it downed a US drone.
The United States and Saudi Arabia have also blamed Iran for multiple attacks on tankers in the Gulf.
The latest attacks come as Saudi Arabia, the world's top crude exporter, accelerates preparations for a much-anticipated initial public offering of Aramco.
The mammoth IPO forms the cornerstone of a reform programme envisaged by the kingdom's de facto ruler Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, a son of King Salman, to wean the Saudi economy off its reliance on oil.
Aramco is ready for a two-stage stock market debut including an international listing 'very soon', its CEO Amin Nasser told reporters on Tuesday.

A civil war has raged in Yemen for five years, during which thousands have died and millions face starvation.
The conflict has been labelled a 'proxy' war in which Saudi Arabia and Iran back the opposing sides. 
It has its roots in the Arab Spring of 2011, when an uprising forced Yemen's long-time authoritarian president to hand over power to his deputy, Abdrabbuh Mansour Hadi.
This transition was supposed to bring stability to one of the Middle East's poorest nations, but the new president struggled to keep order. 
Widespread fighting began in 2014 when Houthi rebels seized large swathes of territory, forcing Mr Hadi into exile.
The Houthi tribal militia – who belong to the Shia branch of Islam – have been backed by Iran, the only major Shia power in the Middle East.
The conflict escalated in 2015 when Saudi Arabia and eight other Sunni Arab states, who back Hadi, began devastating air strikes against the Houthis. The coalition is backed by the UK, US and France.



Drone attack on Saudi Arabia is a 'turning point' for world fuel supplies, experts warn, as oil prices spike 10 per cent with petrol set to rise by 24 cents per gallon
Crude oil prices jumped by 10 per cent on Monday following drone attacks on a refinery and an oil field in Saudi Arabia.  
The blasts disrupted the supply of some 5.7million barrels per day, or 5 per cent of global supply, with experts warning that petrol prices could rise by up to 24 cents per gallon in the US and four pence per litre in the UK as a result.
But there are fears that Monday's price increases are only the tip of the iceberg as security analysts said using drones to penetrate security around the world's largest refinery marks a 'turning point' for the security of the world's fuel supply.
The threat of all-out war in the region could push prices higher still, after President Donald Trump tweeted that the US was 'locked and loaded' as Secretary of State Mike Pompeo pointed the finger of blame at Iran.

Experts have warned that prices for crude oil could spike to $100 per barrel, which would translate to an increase of 24 cents per gallon or 4 pence per litre at the pumps
Tehran has denied any involvement attacks, calling accusations to the contrary 'unacceptable' and 'baseless'. Iran-backed Houthi rebels, which operate out of Yemen, have officially claimed responsibility. 
Benchmark Brent crude gained nearly 20 per cent in the first moments of trading Monday before settling down to 10 per cent higher. 
A barrel of Brent traded up $6 to $66.28. US benchmark West Texas crude was up around 9 per cent.
Analysts said Brent could hit $100 if Riyadh fails to quickly bring back supply. 
Saudi Arabia says it is working to reintroduce supply as quickly as possible, but Reuters reports that a return to full oil supply capacity could take 'weeks not days'.
Rystad Energy, a fuel industry consultancy, said the attacks 'turned the market on its head' over the weekend, and had altered the perception of widely-available oil supplies in the wake of the shale boom in the US.
Meanwhile RBC Capital markets warned the attacks have 'pushed the region ever closer to military confrontation' and that oil markets are set for a 'recalibration'.
The US said it is poised to release its oil reserves to cover any short-fall, but experts still warned that gas prices will be hit, with those on the West Coast worst affected.
Tom Kloza, an analyst at the Oil Price Information Service, said rises of up to 24 cents per gallon could be seen if the disruption drags out.
He told USA Today: 'The question is, does the increase continue to grow and gain steam through the next few months or does Aramco make crude available through some other means?' 
The jump in Brent crude marked its biggest intra-day percentage gain since the Gulf War in 1991. 
The 5.7 million barrels a day outage is the worst single disruption in oil market history, surpassing the loss Iranian oil output in 1979 during the Islamic Revolution. 
Many details of the attack are currently unclear, but the Houthis claim it was carried out using drones flown from Yemen.
The Shia rebel group has previously used drones to attack pipelines, but has never succeeded in significantly disrupting world oil supply before.
If their claims turn out to be true, then experts warned Bloomberg that such attacks will become much more common in the future.
Milena Rodban, an independent risk consultant based in Washington, told the outlet: 'The bottom line is that we are likely to see many more of these sorts of attacks, and in particular, coordinated attacks on multiple targets are likely, possibly in tandem with a cyber attack component.'
Jeffrey Price, a security consultant and professor at Metropolitan State University of Denver, said that using drones 'enables attacks that previously weren't able to be conducted with that level of stealth and detachment from the attacker.'

Felicity Huffman and her 19-year-old daughter were seen delivering cakes to young women at a rehab center just days after the Desperate Housewives star was sentenced to 14 days in prison in the college admissions scandal.
The disgraced actor and  daughter Sophia Grace Macy were seen speaking to friends and walking across the parking lot outside The Teen Project on Sunday, with Sophia carrying a box of cupcakes.
Huffman wore aviator shades with yoga pants and a light-weight running sweater, while her daughter paired blue jeans with sandals and a black tank top.
The mother was seen the day before with her youngest, Georgia Grace Macy, 17, and husband, William H. Macy, loading cardboard boxes into the trunk of their car.

The mother-daughter pair looked relaxed and smiled in the sunshine. Last Friday Huffman was sentenced to two weeks in a federal prison. 
She also issued a public apology for paying $15,000 to inflate her daughter's SAT scores. 
Huffman’s relationship with her teenage daughters was said to have 'exploded' after her arrest, according to Macy in a letter to the court.

Sophia, 19,  allegedly unaware of the scheme to alter her SAT scores, still 'has nightmares from the FBI agents waking her that morning with guns drawn,' wrote Macy, and Sophia’s unnamed dream college rescinded its invitation to audition for its theater program, after she had already flown out for the meeting.
'She called us from the airport in hysterics, begging us to 'Do something, please, do something', the actor wrote. 
The actress’s own letter to the judge begging for leniency recounted an episode in their home when Sophia looked at her, tears streaming down her face, and cried: 'Why didn’t you believe in me? Why didn’t you think I could do it on my own?'
After her sentencing, Huffman wrote in her statement:  'I accept the court’s decision today without reservation'.
'I have always been prepared to accept whatever punishment Judge [Indira] Talwani [of the United States District Court for the District of Massachusetts] imposed. 
'I broke the law. I have admitted that and I pleaded guilty to this crime. There are no excuses or justifications for my actions. Period.
'I would like to apologize again to my daughter, my husband, my family and the educational community for my actions. 
'And I especially want to apologize to the students who work hard every day to get into college, and to their parents who make tremendous sacrifices supporting their children.'

Huffman was sentenced to spend 14 days in prison for paying $15,000 to inflate her daughter's SAT scores
She added: 'I can promise you that in the months and years to come that I will try and live a more honest life, serve as a better role model for my daughters and family and continue to contribute my time and energies wherever I am needed.
'My hope now is that my family, my friends and my community will forgive me for my actions.' 
The Teen Project is a nonprofit serving at risk homeless and sex trafficked young women.
On its website it says: 'The Teen Project is a parent to the parentless providing young women without resources with a chance at life. Our focus is sobriety, education and housing. The Teen Project transitional housing is provided for free to our clients thanks to the support of people who believe in the mission and support our efforts'. 
Reaction to Huffman's sentencing has been mixed. While singer John Legend publicly suggested that people should not 'get mad' about actor's short jail sentence or compare it to a longer sentence handed out to a person of color - because the answer is for 'both' to get less time in prison.
Others were less sympathetic and started the Twitter hashtag #lockherup while calling out the defense for saying she is a 'good caring and decent person'.
'If she were she wouldn't have done what she did. What a joke', replied one Twitter user. 
Meanwhile, as Huffman prepares to serve her prison sentence, fellow actor Lori Loughlin, who along with husband Mossimo Giannulli has also been charged in the college bribery scandal, is reported to be closely following the latest legal developments in the case.
Unlike Huffman and several other defendants who have made plea agreements with federal prosecutors, Loughlin and Giannulli pleaded not guilty.

While Huffman received two weeks in prison for paying $15,000 to inflate her daughter's SAT scores, Loughlin is alleged to have paid $500,000 to fraudulently have her daughters admitted to the University of Southern California by claiming membership on the crew team. 
If convicted, Loughlin faces a maximum of 40 years in prison, though legal observers doubt that a judge would impose such a harsh sentence. 
In addition to her 14-day prison sentence, Huffman was also sentenced to a year of probation for paying a bribe in exchange for a proctor falsifying her daughter's standardized aptitude test to get the teen a higher score.  
The actress, 56, addressed the court just moments before she learned her fate, breaking down in tears as she said: 'I have inflicted more damage than I could’ve ever imagined.'

She then admitted her guilt once more and told the judge her actions were 'frightened, stupid and so wrong,' and added that she deserved whatever sentence was handed down. 
That tearful display came almost 30 minutes after the hearing kicked off with the federal prosecutor assigned to the case reprimanding the actions that resulted in Huffman's indictment and ridiculing her excuses.
Right off the bat, the prosecution commented on Huffman's claim that it was her 'parental anxiety' that led her to bribe an official in order to guarantee her daughter a better SAT test score.
'With all due respect to the defendant, welcome to parenthood,' said Assistant US Attorney Eric Rosen.
'There's no instruction manual. Parenthood is exhausting and stressful, but that's what every parent goes through.' 
He later noted: 'Parenthood does not make you a felon or make you cheat. It makes you serve as a positive role model.'   
Prosecutors reiterated their sentencing recommendation to the court on Friday by very plainly stating: 'The defendant, Felicity Huffman, must go to jail for one month because the only meaningful and sufficient sanction for her criminal activity she engaged in is prison.' 
Huffman was ordered to self-report to a facility determined by the Bureau of Prisons on October 25 by Judge Indira Talwani, who shared with the court how she arrived at her ruling after hearing from prosecutors, the defense and Huffman.   
'The outrage in this case is a system that is already so distorted by money and privilege in the first place,' noted Judge Indira Talwani. 
'And that in a system in that context, that you took the step of having one more advantage to put your child ahead.'  
Huffman was later seen being comforted by her husband, and left the courthouse around 4pm with tears in her eyes.   
 Huffman’s lawyers are working to have their client serve her two-week sentence in a minimum security women’s prison that is considered by locals to be a ‘Club Fed.’

Huffman’s attorneys on Friday requested that she be allowed to serve her sentence at the Federal Correctional Institution in Dublin, California - about 30 southeast of Oakland.
Martin Murphy, a lawyer who represents the actor, made the request on Friday to Judge Indira Talwani.
Murphy asked Talwani to make the recommendation to the Federal Bureau of Prisons, which will ultimately decide where Huffman serves her sentence. 
‘It’s the closest to Ms. Huffman’s residence [in Los Angeles],’ Murphy told the court on Friday.
FCI Dublin is one of four federal penitentiaries in the United States prison system that exclusively houses female inmates.

I accept the court’s decision today without reservation. I have always been prepared to accept whatever punishment Judge Talwani imposed. 
I broke the law. I have admitted that and I pleaded guilty to this crime. There are no excuses or justifications for my actions. Period. 
I would like to apologize again to my daughter, my husband, my family and the educational community for my actions. And I especially want to apologize to the students who work hard every day to get into college, and to their parents who make tremendous sacrifices supporting their children. 
I have learned a lot over the last six months about my flaws as a person. My goal now is to serve the sentence that the court has given me. 
I look forward to doing my community service hours and making a positive impact on my community. I also plan to continue making contributions wherever I can well after those service hours are completed. I can promise you that in the months and years to come that I will try and live a more honest life, serve as a better role model for my daughters and family and continue to contribute my time and energies wherever I am needed. 
My hope now is that my family, my friends and my community will forgive me for my actions. 




The prison population at Dublin is 1,235 inmates.  
Dublin has had a reputation as one of America’s cushiest prisons, according to Forbes. The prison is located close to the Bay Area, where the weather is pleasant year-round. 
Locals have even dubbed the facility 'Chateau Dublin'.  
Federal documents show that while Huffman worked alone to iron out the details when the couple's first daughter had her SAT changed by a proctor to improve her score, Macy was aware of the situation and the payment came from the couple's joint account.
He in turn took a more active role in organizing the younger daughter's fraudulent SAT, agreeing to the money and a set place and time much like his wife had done one year prior with their other child.
In that case however, the couple's daughter achieved the results she had hoped for on her own and the mastermind behind the operation was informed that she would not be needing to submit a fraudulent score. 
Huffman paid a $15,000 'charitable contribution to participate in the college entrance exam cheating scheme on behalf of her eldest daughter,' states the complaint.
'Huffman later made arrangements to pursue the scheme a second time, for her younger daughter, before deciding not to do so,' according to the documents.
The charging documents state that Huffman had the site where her daughter took the SATs moved from her own high school to a test center West Hollywood.
That was to avoid a teacher who knew the girl, who had also applied for and received extended time to take the test, from being present.
The girl's test was then administered by a proctor who had flown in from Tampa and told investigators that he 'facilitated cheating, either by correcting the student's answers after the test or by actively assisting the student during the exam.'

That proctor, Mark Ridell, has also been charged.
In this case, Huffman's daughter scored a 1420, which was a 400 point improvement from her PSAT results just one year prior.
Soon after the proctor was paid $40,000 by Key Worldwide Foundation, the same organization that Huffman would later give a $15,000 donation to, according to the documents.[/size]

A landlady in Milan has allegedly dubbed herself '100 per cent racist' and refused to rent a house to a woman because she was from the south of Italy. 
Deborah Prencipe posted audio recordings from the landlady, known only as Mrs Patrizia, to her Facebook account after her girlfriend was told she was no longer able to rent a house near Milan because she was from the south. 
Ms Prencipe's girlfriend, Laura Ortolani, 28, is from Puglia in the south of Italy and had planned to move near to Milan to be closer to Ms Prencipe.

Ms Prencipe wrote about the ordeal on Facebook and said: 'Welcome to Italy today where, apparently, you can put out signs that say "do not rent to the southern"'
According to The Local, Mrs Patrizia can be heard saying: 'For me, southerners, blacks, Roma – they're all the same, I'm 100 per cent racist. I don't give a damn what you think.'

Ms Ortolani said she had already signed a contract to rent the house in the village of Malvaglio - 18 miles from Milan.
But just two weeks before she was due to move in Mrs Patrizia said she was postponing the move-in date, before cancelling it altogether.

The landlady originally claimed the reason she was cancelling the agreement was because she wanted to sell the house rather than rent it.  
But in the audio recordings she said: 'As far as I'm concerned a southerner is a southerner, in the 2000s or in the 4000s, that's why I held off... You're not Swiss, you're a southerner, it's different.' 
Mrs Patrizia also allegedly declared her support for Matteo Salvini of the League, a party whose main goal is to separate northern Italy from the poorer south. 
The couple have decided not to press charges against the woman because they believe that putting the story out in the media is punishment enough.

President Donald Trump seized on the New York Times having to walk back a key element of its weekend Brett Kavanaugh story, saying Monday the Supreme Court Justice is the one being 'assaulted' and should sue for relief.     
'Just Out: “Kavanaugh accuser doesn’t recall incident.” @foxandfriends,' Trump wrote, tagging his favorite morning cable TV program. 'DO YOU BELIEVE WHAT THESE HORRIBLE PEOPLE WILL DO OR SAY. They are looking to destroy, and influence his opinions - but played the game badly. They should be sued!'
Trump fired off a series of tweets Monday morning after the paper acknowledged in an editor's note that it had left out two key details from its report, which aired accusations about two separate incidents where the Trump nominee allegedly exposed himself during Yale college parties.

Although the paper tracked down sources who heard contemporaneous accusations by classmate Deborah Ramirez, it also wrote about an alleged incident from a book about Kavanaugh's penis being pushed into the hand of a woman at a party – but without noting the woman declined to talk to the paper and that friends say she does not recall the incident. 

 Trump also quoted commentator Dan Bongino, a former Secret Service agent, conservative commentator, and failed congressional candidate. 
'“What’s happening to Justice Kavanaugh is a disgrace. This guy is not a good man, he is a great man. He has to go to his church with his family while these terrible reports are being written about him, a disgrace!” Dan Bongino @foxandfriends,' the president wrote.
 In a third tweet, Trump went after the Times, a paper he regularly attacks. In this missive, Trump said the one who is 'actually being assaulted' is Kavanaugh, whose confirmation hearing featured heated allegations of rape and sexual assault. Kavanaugh denied the charges during the hearing. According to the Times, two two sides could not reach agreement on the terms of an interview.

According to the Times' explosive report, 'At least seven people, including Ms. Ramirez’s mother, heard about the Yale incident long before Mr. Kavanaugh was a federal judge. Two of those people were classmates who learned of it just days after the party occurred, suggesting that it was discussed among students at the time,” the reporters write.'


The paper has been hit with backlash for revising its 'bombshell' article describing 'new' sexual assault allegations against Brett Kavanaugh to include the fact that the alleged victim does not remember the apparent assault and declined to be interviewed about it. 

WHO ARE THE NEW YORK TIMES JOURNALISTS BEHIND THE BOOK?

Pogrebin is described by the newspaper as 'a reporter on the Culture Desk, where she covers cultural institutions, the art world, architecture and other subjects.' 
As the row unfolded on Saturday, she tweeted proudly about how the coverage had prompted calls from senior Democrats for Kavanaugh to resign. 
She also tweeted that the president had tweeted three times about the story but did not repeat what he had said. He called the reporting a 'disgrace'. 

Kate Kelly 
Kelly is a Wall Street reporter who writes about 'its political influence and inner workings.' 
They spent 10 months interviewing people to back up Ramirez's claims about Kavanaugh for their book. 
She also spent Sunday retweeting praise for their book, including one review which called it 'careful and balanced'. 
Both Kelly and Pogrebin formerly  worked at the New York Observer.  



The NYT published its story in the early hours of Sunday morning based on claims made by Max Stier, a former male classmate of Kavanaugh's at Yale. 
Two of the newspaper's reporters - an arts writer and Wall Street reporter -  discovered, from an unnamed official, that Stier reported seeing an apparent assault at a dorm party in the 1980s. He said Kavanaugh had his pants down and that his classmates then pushed his penis into a woman's face. 
They included his claim in a book they have written about Kavanaugh's college years which will be released on Tuesday.  
Both Stier - who has been on the opposing side of legal cases from Kavanaugh before and who worked for Bill Clinton - declined to be interviewed, as did the woman at the heart of his claims. 
What's more, her friends told the NYT journalists that she does not even remember the apparent incident. 
Those key details however did not make their way into the excerpt of the book that was published online. The newspaper amended the online story later on Sunday, after someone who had seen an advance copy of the book flagged the omission. 
By then, Democrats including Kamala Harris, Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren had called for Kavanaugh to be impeached, saying the new report fueled the allegations against him.
President Trump - a vocal enemy of the NYT - has since intervened to defend Kavanaugh and encourage him to sue for libel, calling the debacle a 'disgrace'. 
It is the latest in a string of incidents the newspaper has apologized for, most of which have involved the outlet criticizing the president.

The fresh claim is similar to a different allegation made by Deborah Ramirez who says Kavanaugh pushed his penis in her face when she was drinking heavily at a party around the same time.

She spoke out last year, amid Kavanaugh's highly publicized confirmation hearings where Dr. Christine Blasey Ford described him sexually assaulting her.  
Ramirez claimed that Kavanaugh exposed his penis to her and thrust it in her face at a dorm party, forcing her touch it while they were both students at Yale.  She alleged that others at the party had been passing a fake penis around and laughed at her afterwards.
The woman at the heart of the new claim has not spoken publicly about it but according to ABC, said when questioned about the NYT report: 'All I can say is ask Brett.' 
According to the NYT, Stier notified the FBI and senators about the incident, but the FBI did not investigate the claim or interview the alleged victim.
The journalists did not name the 'officials' who told the book's journalists that he had even reported it or say why it was not, as they claimed, properly investigated.  

[size=34]SOURCE OF ALLEGATION IS AN EX-CLINTON LAWYER WHO HAS A HISTORY OF BEING 'PITTED AGAINST' KAVANAUGH [/size]

The claim comes from Max Stier who reported seeing the alleged assault to the FBI and to senators. He declined to speak with the Times and has a history of being 'pitted against' Kavanaugh - which the Times did not include 
The source of the 'new' allegation is Max Stier, a heavyweight lawyer with a history of being on the opposing side from Kavanaugh. 
Stier did not speak to the Times and it is unclear when he reported his allegation to the FBI but it is likely to be around the time Kavanaugh was nominated by Trump. 
The pair were classmates at Yale in the early 1980s. Whether or not they were friends is unclear, but by 1994, they were on opposite sides of a highly publicized legal fight - the Whitewater investigation into Bill Clinton's real estate dealings when he was president. 
Kavanaugh was on the team of investigator Kenneth Starr and Stier was one of Clinton's lawyers. 
A Yale Daily News article from July last year, when Kavanaugh was nominated to the Supreme Court, described it. 
'Those proceedings pitted Kavanaugh against a former Yale classmate, Max Stier ’87, a fellow member of Stiles College who was one of several attorneys representing Clinton during the investigation,' it read. 
The NYT did not include that detail in its report. 
It referred to Stier as a 'classmate' who now 'runs a nonprofit organization in Washington.' 
Stier is the President and CEO, Partnership for Public Service which works 'to make government more effective and efficient.' 
It is a nonpartisan body. 
Stier has kept his politics quiet in the past. In a 2016 article he wrote for The Daily Beast, he defended both Trump and Hillary Clinton for preparing transition teams ahead of the election. 
The headline, however, defended only Clinton. 
Stier tried last year to get the story to The Washington Post and he also wrote to Senator Christopher A. Coons about it, asking to remain anonymous. 
Coons took his concern and wrote to the Judiciary Committee, urging it to investigate. The Washington Post did not write a story about it because, it claimed on Monday, it was contacted by two 'intermediaries' working on behalf of Stier. 
They did not name him and the Post said it did not have enough information to write the story.  



The book by two of the newspaper's journalists - The Education of Brett Kavanaugh: An Investigation- is out on Tuesday. 
It purports to verify Ramirez' claims and criticizes the Senate Judiciary Committee for not calling on her to speak at the hearings. 
It also touts the 'new' allegation.  
After publishing its first excerpt, a journalist who had been sent an advance copy of the book picked up on the omission. 
'The book notes, quietly, that the woman Max Stier named as having been supposedly victimized by Kavanaugh and friends denies any memory of the alleged event,' The Federalist's Mollie Hemingway tweeted.

'An earlier version of this article, which was adapted from a forthcoming book, did not include one element of the book's account regarding an assertion by a Yale classmate that friends of Brett Kavanaugh pushed his penis into the hand of a female student at a drunken dorm party. 
'The book reports that the female student declined to be interviewed and friends say that she does not recall the incident. 
'That information has been added to the article.' 
The newspaper had already apologized for tweeting that 'having a penis thrust in your face may seem like harmless fun'. 
Minutes after that first tweet was posted, the paper issued a retraction, writing: 'We have deleted an earlier tweet to this article that was poorly phrased.' 
They later deleted that post following further criticism, adding: 'We deleted a previous tweet regarding this article. It was offensive, and we apologize.'
Since the fresh allegation has come to light a string of Democrat 2020 presidential hopefuls have called for Kavanaugh to either step down or be impeached.
Kamala Harris, Elizabeth Warren, Beto O'Rourke, Cory Booker and Julian Castro, were among the group calling for Kavanaugh's resignation. 
President Trump defended his Supreme Court nominee and said Kavanaugh should sue for libel.
He tweeted: 'Brett Kavanaugh should start suing people for libel, or the Justice Department should come to his rescue.

The New York Times deleted a tweet on Saturday that described the allegations against Brett Kavanaugh as 'harmless fun'
'The lies being told about him are unbelievable.
'False Accusations without recrimination. 
'When does it stop? They are trying to influence his opinions. Can't let that happen!' 
Not only was the newspaper criticized for its treatment of Stier's apparent allegation, but its handling of Ramirez's was also criticized. 
The NYT reporters said that though they found Dr. Christine Blasey Ford's testimony 'credible', 'during a 10-month investigation, Ms. Ramirez’s story could be more fully corroborated.' 
It quotes her lawyers who say they were frustrated by how they were treated, and makes no mention of the steps taken to verify or investigate Ramirez's claim. 
On Sunday, Sen. Chuck Grassley, the committee chairman, fumed about the coverage. 
'The NY Times did not contacted (sic) Sen. Grassley’s office for this story. 
'If they had, we would've reminded them of a few key public facts they omitted,' his office tweeted.
They then listed the reasons they say Ramirez was never called on to testify and referred back to a New York Times article from last year which said journalists could not corroborate her claims despite interviewing several people.

Ford, a research psychologist and professor, drew national attention last year after she came forward with sexual assault allegations following Trump's appointment of Kavanaugh. 
The 52-year-old claimed 17-year-old Kavanaugh held her down on a bed at high school party when she was 15 and tried to remove her clothing, putting his hand over her mouth to stop her screaming.

Design features intended to deter homeless people have been slammed in a thread detailing the most cruel examples of 'hostile architecture'. 
The origin of the term is unknown, but cities throughout the world show examples of the purposefully obstructive design features. However, some - like sloping benches or 'artwork' in wide doorways - are subtle enough that members of the public never really pause to think of their intent. 
The thread called out the most prevalent examples of anti-homeless architecture, causing outrage and forcing people to take notice of inhumane and insidious design practices.

Mixed messages: A Twitter user questioned why someone would paint a bench to represent inclusivity, while also making it clear that homeless people were not to rest on it 
Several images show benches with bars in the middle of the seating area - a normal sight in many urban areas. 

A Canadian Twitter user shared an image of a park bench painted in LGBTQ-friendly rainbow colors that had multiple dividing bars in the middle. 
Social media users were angered at how the bench could promote inclusivity to one community while discriminating against people who were seeking a place to sleep. 
Another image showed a bench in Volgodonsk, Russia that appeared to be chained up overnight to prevent anyone resting on it. 
'That is exceptionally mean,' someone wrote. 
Numerous images showed dangerous-looking spikes in open spaces and underneath bridges. 
A social media user shared images of a bank in Mumbai, India, which had sharp iron spikes surrounding its exterior; a move to discourage people from seeking shelter there. 
'Is this for real? Sickening,' a commentor denounced.

'This is the most heartless and cruel thing I have ever seen! Shame on you,' said another. 
A picture was circulated of the area underneath an overpass where tracks of spikes had been laid down to prevent anyone trying to set up camp.  
'The brutalist architecture, the anti-homeless aggressiveness....it is freaking awful....[what the hell does it matter if they sleep under the overpass? Leave them be,' slammed a response. 
Lest people remain unaware, someone pointed out that spheres or any other shapes inset into concrete might look less intimidating - but the intent is still the same. 
'Spikes or balls, it doesn't matter, it's all equally cruel,' commented a user - as someone shared an image of what looked like neon green cacti in a doorway. 
However many pointed out at least the spheres or other shapes were not 'as dangerous' as metal spikes. 
Topic Magazine estimates that the prevalence of hostile architecture began to rise in the 1980s and 1990s in America. 
'Architects began to use urban design to combat behaviors [like sitting, standing, waiting sleeping in public] and hostile architecture became a familiar sight.

The magazine writes that in a busy metropolis like New York, the details are subtle but substantial.

Steps: Users questioned why this business owner made their steps virtually inaccessible by adding this intense design feature 
For example, in certain subway stations, there are no benches anymore, having been replaced with 'leaning areas'. 
In public parks, almost all benches now have dividing rails making it near-impossible for someone to stretch out to sleep. 
In the 1990s in downtown Los Angeles, 'bum-proof benches' were installed on Skid Row, an area which has the largest homeless population in the U.S.
Said barrel-shaped benches at bus stops made sitting for any extended period of time highly uncomfortable - let alone sleeping.     
A 2019 report from the National Law Center on Homelessness and Poverty studied 187 American cities in a bid to assess the amount of areas that 'criminalize the life-sustaining behaviors of homeless people'.
The research found that 57 per cent of the cities imposed a law prohibiting camping in public. Some 65 per cent of cities also prohibit loitering in public places.
Of the cities studied, 27 per cent prohibit sleeping in particular public places, such as in public parks, while a shocking 53 per cent of cities prevent homeless people from sitting or lying down.

President Donald Trump wants Democrats to pay a little less attention to him — and a little more attention to the various deals former President Barack Obama has inked since leaving office.
Trump, 73, lashed out at the House Judiciary Committee in a Twitter spree on Monday, and once again urged them to investigate the book and Netflix deals Obama has signed, both of which are reported to have price tags in the millions.
“House Judiciary has given up on the Mueller Report, sadly for them after two years and $40,000,000 spent – ZERO COLLUSION, ZERO OBSTRUCTION. So they say, OK, lets look at everything else, and all of the deals that ‘Trump’ has done over his lifetime. But it doesn’t work that way,” he began.

The commander-in-chief continued, accusing Democrats of “failing” on the Mueller report and Mueller’s testimony, thus prompting them to “build a case that I enrich myself by being president.”
“Good idea, except I will, and have always expected to, lose BILLIONS of DOLLARS for the privilege of being your President – and doing the best job that has been done in many decades,” Trump wrote. “I am far beyond somebody paying for a hotel room for the evening, or filling up a gas tank at an airport I do not own. Mr. Obama, 58, and his wife, former First Lady Michelle Obama, 55, signed a deal in 2017 to release their memoirs with Penguin Random House, an agreement worth a reported $65 million.
Mr. Obama followed the lead of fellow former presidents like Bill Clinton and George W. Bush, who have published memoirs after leaving the White House, and the publishing company said at the time that a “significant portion” of the authors’ profits would be donated to charity.
Mrs. Obama’s book, Becoming, sold nearly 10 million copies upon its release last fall, making it one of, it not the, most successful memoir in history, Thomas Rabe, head of one of Penguin’s parent companies, told the Wall Street Journal.
Trump previously called for a probe into the book deal in July, saying, “We want to find out what happened with the last Democrat president. Let’s look into Obama, the way they’ve looked at me … They could look into the book deal that President Obama made.”
Meanwhile, the Obamas also announced a production deal with Netflix in 2018, in which their newly-created Higher Ground production company would create content for the streaming service.

Netflix did not disclose the terms of the agreement, though similar deals with celebrities have been worth millions; producer Ryan Murphy, for example, is said to have pulled in $300 million with his latest Netflix deal, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Trump’s Twitter boast that the presidency is costing him billions is also not the first time he’s made such a claim; in August, he twice said that being in office was costing him between $3 and $5 billion, first during a visit to a Shell petrochemical plant in Pennsylvania, and again at the G7 summit in France.

As for his references to gas tanks, airports, and hotel rooms, those likely come from recent reports that the House Oversight and Reform Committee has been looking into his dealings with the Glasgow Prestwick Airport in Scotland, which is located near Trump’s golf resort in Turnberry.
The New York Times recently reported that Trump’s administration has used the airport to refuel Air Force flights, and local airport authority has been tasked with helping find accommodations for flight crews staying overnight.

Donald Trump hit out at California Tuesday over the handling of its homelessness crisis which he said was destroying cities like San Francisco and Los Angeles and prompting foreign residents to flee.
'We can't let Los Angeles, San Francisco and numerous other cities destroy themselves by allowing what's happening,' Trump told reporters aboard Air Force One as he headed to the overwhelmingly Democratic state for a two-day visit.
'And I'm speaking to tenants - in some cases foreign people, foreign tenants - but they have, where they're tenants in buildings throughout various cities in California, and other places... where they want to leave the country. They can't believe what's happening.'
Trump, who has ramped up his criticism of California over its homelessness crisis and other issues ahead of the 2020 election, said he was mulling the creation of an 'individual task force' to tackle homelessness.

'We have people living in our... best highways, our best streets, our best entrances to buildings... where people in those buildings pay tremendous taxes, where they went to those locations because of the prestige,' he said.

'In many cases, they came from other countries and they moved to Los Angeles or they moved to San Francisco because of the prestige of the city, and all of a sudden they have tents.
'Hundreds and hundreds of tents and people living at the entrance to their office building. And they want to leave. And the people of San Francisco are fed up, and the people of Los Angeles are fed up.'
Trump, who has previously described the state's homeless crisis as 'disgusting,' said he planned to discuss the issue with Ben Carson, who heads the Department of Housing and Urban Development.
An estimated 130,000 people are homeless in California, with some 59,000 of them in Los Angeles County.
Trump has threatened a federal crackdown to deal with the problem and last week several officials from his administration visited Los Angeles and met with local officials.   
Trump is expected to attend a fundraiser dinner in Beverly Hills on Tuesday at the home of real estate developer Geoffrey Palmer.
Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti on Tuesday morning said he would welcome Trump's help to end homelessness if he contributed federal dollars or property that could be converted into shelters.

'I know I'm just supposed to punch the president back but if he is real about it, I'll believe it when I see it, but I'll also trust that he wants to save some lives as well,' the mayor said. 'Certainly I do. We could do that together.'
Garcetti, separately speaking in a video recorded at one of an eventual 26 housing facilities being built to transition people from life on the streets, noted that the president would be in Los Angeles to raise funds for his reelection campaign.
'But I wanted to talk to him a little bit as if he had come down here to South LA to understand and to hear the challenges we face and ways that Washington, D.C. - instead of demonizing us - might be able to actually come and help us,' Garcetti said.
Garcetti pushed back on a Trump assertion in a July interview that homelessness was a phenomenon that began two years ago.
'I'd like to reassure the president it didn't start two years ago when you became president. It didn't even start six years ago when I became mayor. But it is our collective watch and our collective responsibility to solve this,' Garcetti said.
Garcetti pointed to a Sept. 10 letter in which he urged Trump to provide funding for a new veterans housing development, support appropriations for federal programs that address homelessness and create economic opportunities and rescind proposed federal rules that would evict mixed-status immigrant families from assisted housing and prevent transgender homeless people from going into federally funded shelters.
The mayor, who noted that homelessness occurs at a higher rate in Washington, D.C., than in Los Angeles, said it was 'time for us to pause politics and not to demonize Americans that are on the street.'
Former Texas Rep. Beto O'Rourke, who is seeking the Democratic presidential nomination, also spent Tuesday in Los Angeles where he visited a women's center on Skid Row.
'I came to listen and to learn from those who are living on Skid Row, those who are serving the people who are living on Skid Row and not just in terms of addressing challenges here but how that might apply to this country,' O'Rourke said. 'You could argue that Los Angeles has the best perspective in the United States of America on this issue.'

Back-to-school supplies take on a whole new meaning in Sandy Hook Promise’s eye-opening new PSA about the prevalence of gun violence, where students use everyday items to survive a school shooting.
At first, the video — made by the gun-violence prevention organization created in the wake of the 2012 Connecticut school shooting — seems like just another back-to-school ad.
“This year my mom got me the perfect bag for back-to-school,” a student says into the camera as he lugs his backpack out of his locker.
Within seconds it becomes clear that something else is starting to happen. With the crack of gunfire erupting behind them, students are shown running for their lives and using anything they can to protect themselves.
One teen uses her new jacket to tie a door shut. Another takes off her new sock to fashion a tourniquet around her friend’s bloody leg.

The most terrifying and gut-wrenching scene comes at the end, when a teenage girl wonders if she is going to live or die.
The PSA delivers “a gut punch,” says SHP co-founder and co-director Mark Barden, whose 7-year-old son, Daniel, was killed in the 2012 Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting that left 20 first-graders and 6 educators dead.


Entitled “Back-to-School-Essentials,” the video’s aim is to illustrate the anxiety faced by students who fear it’s only a matter of time before a school shooting will occur on their campus, says Barden.
Like the other six PSAs released since 2016 by Sandy Hook Promise and the ad agency, BBDO New York, the latest PSA unflinchingly presents the stark reality of a school shooting.
“It shows the juxtaposition of what kids should be thinking about — and what they are unfortunately being forced to think about when they go to school,” Barden tells PEOPLE.

Since the Sandy Hook shooting, Barden has dedicated his life to making sure no other family has to endure the pain of losing a loved one to gun violence.


Shortly after the shooting, Barden joined forces with Nicole Hockley, whose 6-year-old son, Dylan, was killed at Sandy Hook, and others in the community to create SHP to help stop gun violence, advocating for preventative solutions.


These include SHP’s Know the Signs programs. Highlighted in the PSAs, the programs teach students and adults how to recognize the warning signs and threats that often come before an act of violence or self-harm so they can intervene.
“We can change this,” Barden says. “This is preventable. We have developed tools that actually work. We don’t want kids to have to be looking over their shoulder in their own schools.”
He adds, “We’re on a mission to change that and we need everybody’s help. This is a call to action.”
His 17-year-old daughter, Natalie, has been helping him raise awareness about SHP’s mission — as well as working with the Junior Newtown Action Alliance, a youth organization advocating for positive change in the wake of the tragedy.


“We do a lot of letter writing and calling representatives,” says Natalie. “We are planning on going to D.C. for the National Vigil for Victims of Gun Violence [in December.]”
Natalie has also been writing about gun violence prevention, with one of her essays featured in Teen Vogue.

SHP’s first PSA, ‘Evan,’ had more than 11 million views on YouTube. It went on to garner a slew of industry awards and was named one of Adweek’s best ads of 2016.
Now, SHP has learned that last year’s PSA, Point of View, was nominated for an Emmy Award for Outstanding Commercial.
“It sounds cliche, but it really is an honor to be nominated,” says Barden. “We want as many people as possible to see the essential ‘Know the Signs’ message, to galvanize more people into action to protect our kids.”
Hockley, the managing director of SHP, agrees. “We cannot accept school shootings as the ‘new normal’ in our country,” she says in a release about the PSA.

Climate change protests took over big cities across the country on Friday, with hundreds of thousands skipping school in of Boston, Washington DC, Omaha, Indianapolis and Greenborough to join millions around the globe in the lead-up to teenage activist Greta Thunberg's appearance in New York for a summit at the UN. 
In New York itself, the city's Department of Education said all its 1.1million schoolchildren can skip class to participate in the strike if they had parental consent - without any fear of punishment as Thunberg, who has been nominated for a Nobel prize for her climate activism, spearheaded a rally at the United Nations headquarters. 
Young people held up signs with important messages such as 'don't burn my future' and 'we are missing lessons to teach you one', in what was expected to be the biggest protest ever against the threat posed to the planet by climate change.

The protests are part of a snowballing movement sparked by school strikes outside the Swedish parliament.
The summit in New York convened by UN secretary general Antonio Guterres to urge countries to up their climate efforts.
In New York young men were seen holding up a sign, quoting Bill Nye. It read: 'The planet's f**king on fire.' 
A sign mocked politicians by referencing the Swedish home store: 'I've seen better cabinets at IKEA'.

Much steeper measures are needed across the globe to prevent temperature rises of more than 1.5C (2.7F) or 2C (3.6F) to avoid the worst impacts of climate change.

Black conservative activist Candace Owens told Congress that white nationalism and white supremacy are not a problem for minorities in America. 
Owens was invited to testify in front of the House Oversight Joint Subcommittee on Friday to discuss combating white supremacy.  
She said: 'If we're going to have a hearing on white supremacy, we are assuming that the biggest victims of that are minority Americans and presumably this hearing would be to stop that and preserve the lives of minority Americans.'
'Which based on the hierarchy of what's impacting minority Americans, if I had to make a list of 100 things, white nationalism would not make the list.'

Owens then proceeds to list issues she believes are more immediately pressing, including black on black crime, abortion, illegal immigration and the democrats attack on masculinity. 
'We don't see hearings on those bigger issues..the inner city communities which is a huge issue, black on black crime. The breakdown of the family I think is the number one thing contributing to that,' she said.
'We never hear anyone talking about what happens when you remove a father from the home. In fact, I would argue that right now we have a social environment that is hostile towards men.'
Later during the hearing Owens summarized her position on the matter by saying: 'White supremacy and white nationalism is not a problem that is harming black America.'

Rep. Jim Jordan (R-OH) ceded all his time to Owens, who had been ignored by Democrats throughout the majority of the proceedings. 
She said: 'I also found it quite hilarious that when asked for actual numbers, nobody here could actually provide them because it's not actually a problem in America or a major problem that's facing black America.' 
Owens told the subcommittee that African Americans had a higher chance of being struck by lightning than being shot by police in 2016.

Fellow Panelist Dr. Kathleen Belew, a professor and historian who has researched the rise of the white power movement, pushed back against Owens for shrugging off current research on the subject.

'Now, you're of course not responsible for the words of someone writing that document, but I do think laughing at it is a real problem.'
Belew is referring to when Owens tweeted 'LOL' after being named in the Christchurch shooter's manifesto. 
Owens fired back at Belew, calling her a 'made-up professor.'

 The Anti-Defamation League's Center on Extremism reports that:'white supremacists and other far-right extremists were responsible for 59 percent of all extremist-related fatalities in the U.S. in 2017, up dramatically from 20 percent in 2016.
'White supremacists were directly responsible for 18 of the total 34 extremist-related murders in 2017...'
Owens comments come off the heels of a string of controversial statements over the past year. 
In June, Owens said African Americans were better off during the first 100 years after slavery. 
She said:  'You know in our community after the first 100 years—doctor, doctor, come on—100 years after slavery, the black community was doing better.'
That timeline would include the Jim Crow era and predate the Civil Rights Act.

The Trump administration is threatening to cut funding for a Middle East studies program run by the University of North Carolina and Duke University, arguing that it's misusing a federal grant to advance 'ideological priorities' and unfairly promote 'the positive aspects of Islam' but not Christianity or Judaism.
An August 29 letter from the U.S. Education Department orders the Duke-UNC Consortium for Middle East Studies to revise its offerings by September 22 or risk losing future funding from a federal grant that's awarded to dozens of universities to support foreign language instruction. The consortium received $235,000 from the grant last year, according to Education Department data.
A statement from the UNC-Chapel Hill says the consortium 'deeply values its partnership with the Department of Education' and is 'committed to working with the department to provide more information about its programs.' Officials at Duke declined to comment. The Education Department declined to say if it's examining similar programs at other schools.

Academic freedom advocates say the government could be setting a dangerous precedent if it injects politics into funding decisions. Some said they had never heard of the Education Department asserting control over such minute details of a program's offerings.

'Is the government now going to judge funding programs based on the opinions of instructors or the approach of each course?' said Henry Reichman, chairman of a committee on academic freedom for the American Association of University Professors. 'The odor of right wing political correctness that comes through this definitely could have a chilling effect.'
More than a dozen universities receive National Resource Center grants for their Middle East programs, including Columbia, Georgetown, Yale and the University of Texas. The Duke-UNC consortium was founded in 2005 and first received the grant nearly a decade ago.
Education Secretary Betsy DeVos ordered an investigation into the program in June after North Carolina Rep. George Holding, a Republican, complained that it hosted a taxpayer-funded conference with 'severe anti-Israeli bias and anti-Semitic rhetoric.' The conference, titled 'Conflict Over Gaza: People, Politics and Possibilities,' included a rapper who performed a 'brazenly anti-Semitic song,' Holding said in an April 15 letter .




Education Secretary Betsy DeVos, pictured, ordered an investigation into the program in June after North Carolina Rep. George Holding, a Republican, complained that it hosted a taxpayer-funded conference with 'severe anti-Israeli bias and anti-Semitic rhetoric.' 
In a response , DeVos said she was 'troubled' by Holding's letter and would take a closer look at the consortium.
The inquiry joins a broader Education Department effort to root out anti-Semitism at U.S. universities. Speaking at a summit on the topic in July, DeVos attacked a movement to boycott Israel over its treatment of Palestinians, calling it a 'pernicious threat' on college campuses.
That focus appears to reflect the views of an agency leadership that includes a civil rights chief, Kenneth L. Marcus, who has made a career of pro-Israel advocacy and has waged a yearslong campaign to delegitimize and defund Middle East studies programs that he has criticized as rife with anti-Israel bias. 
Last year, the department reopened an investigation at Rutgers University in which an outside group was accused of charging Jewish attendees for admission while allowing others in for free.
In the UNC-Duke case, the department's findings did not directly address any bias against Israel but instead evaluated whether the consortium's proposed activities met the goals of the National Resource Center program, which was created in 1965 to support language and culture initiatives that prepare students for careers in diplomacy and national security.

Investigators concluded that the consortium intended to use federal money on offerings that are 'plainly unqualified for taxpayer support,' adding that foreign language and national security instruction have 'taken a back seat to other priorities.' The department cited several courses, conferences and academic papers that it says have 'little or no relevance' to the grant's goals.
'Although a conference focused on 'Love and Desire in Modern Iran' and one focused on Middle East film criticism may be relevant in academia, we do not see how these activities support the development of foreign language and international expertise for the benefit of U.S. national security and economic stability,' the letter said.
Investigators also saw a disconnect between the grant's mission and some academic papers by scholars at the consortium. They objected to one paper titled 'Performance, Gender-Bending and Subversion in the Early Modern Ottoman Intellectual History,' and another titled 'Radical Love: Teachings from Islamic Mystical Tradition.'
The letter accused the consortium of failing to provide a 'balance of perspectives' on religion. It said there is 'a considerable emphasis' placed on 'understanding the positive aspects of Islam, while there is an absolute absence of any similar focus on the positive aspects of Christianity, Judaism or any other religion or belief system in the Middle East.'
It added that there are few offerings on discrimination faced by religious minorities in the Middle East, 'including Christians, Jews, Baha'is, Yadizis, Kurds, Druze and others.' Department officials said the grant's rules require programs to provide a 'full understanding' of the regions they study.
Jay Smith, a history professor at UNC and vice president of its chapter of the American Association of University Professors, said the letter amounts to 'ideologically driven harassment.' He said the Education Department official who signed the letter, Robert King, 'should stay in his lane and allow the experts to determine what constitutes a 'full understanding' of the Middle East.'
But Holding, the Republican who sparked the investigation, said it's clear the consortium stepped outside the bounds of the grant. The Education Department has an obligation to ensure its funding is used as intended, he said, adding that other schools should make sure they're following the rules.
'This has fallen through the cracks, and this could be going on at other educational institutions,' he said in an interview. 'If the department's providing the money and giving guidance on how the money is to be used, I think they can be as in the weeds as they need to be.'
The National Resource Center grant program provided a total of $22 million to language programs at about 40 universities last year. Of that total, about $3.5 million was for Middle East programs.
Along with its objection to the nature of the UNC-Duke offerings, the department also said it is concerned that, out of 6,800 students enrolled in the consortium's courses, just 960 were enrolled in Middle East language classes, and that only 11% of the program's graduates pursue careers in government, while 35% takes jobs in academia.

There’s so much we don’t know about the whistle-blower complaint concerning President Trump. But here are four things we do know:
First, it seems that an experienced intelligence official was so deeply disturbed by Trump’s interactions with the president of Ukraine to feel the need to blow the whistle.
Second, the inspector general for the intelligence community, Michael Atkinson, who was appointed by Trump and has long experience on national security issues, found the whistle-blower’s concern to be legitimate and urgent.
Third, the whistle-blower complaint came after Trump and his associates hounded Ukraine’s president, Volodymyr Zelensky, to undertake a corruption investigation involving Joe Biden and his son, Hunter. The Ukrainian summary of a July 25 phone call between Trump and Zelensky included this cryptic sentence: “Donald Trump is convinced that the new Ukrainian government will be able to quickly improve image of Ukraine, complete investigation of corruption cases, which inhibited the interaction between Ukraine and the USA.” The Wall Street Journal reports that in that phone call, Trump pressed Zelensky about eight times to work with Trump’s lawyer Rudy Giuliani to investigate the Bidens.
Eight times! Nevertheless, he persisted!
Fourth, Trump withheld $250 million in military assistance urgently needed by Ukraine to fend off Russian aggression, although Ukraine didn’t learn of this until August. He released the money after the whistle-blower complaint and after members of Congress intervened.

Thus it appears that after benefiting from Russian interference in the 2016 election, Trump then tried to coax Ukraine to interfere in the 2020 election. It’s particularly egregious that Trump seemed eager to trade $250 million in American taxpayer dollars for Ukrainian help in tarring a Democratic rival.

Giuliani has helpfully acknowledged that he urged Ukraine’s government to investigate whether Biden’s diplomatic efforts were meant to help Hunter, who had been involved in a gas company in Ukraine. (There’s no evidence of this.) Giuliani also pushed Ukraine to reinvestigate old corruption charges that ensnared Trump’s former campaign chairman, Paul Manafort, and to conclude that this was a political attack on Trump.
In effect, Trump apparently tried to use American diplomatic might and the leverage of military assistance to get Ukraine to exonerate Manafort for 2016 and smear Biden for 2020.
The incoherence of the Trump-Giuliani position is underscored in this interview Thursday evening on CNN:

Rudy Giuliani: No. Actually, I didn’t …
Cuomo, 24 seconds later: So, you did ask Ukraine to look into Joe Biden?










Giuliani: Of course, I did.
Trump has been credibly accused of using the presidency to enrich himself (summits at Trump properties!), to protect himself from law enforcement (appeals to James Comey, offers of pardons!) and to punish perceived adversaries (Amazon, [size=16]CNN, Andrew McCabe). Now he may have harnessed the power of the presidency to gain political advantage.
This is bombshell layered upon bombshell. On top of the initial accusation by the whistle-blower is the refusal of the acting director of national intelligence, Joseph Maguire, to obey federal law and relay the matter to Congress within one week.
The law is very clear, but it’s also true that Presidents Bill Clinton and Barack Obama both suggested that there might be situations involving classified information where a president should not follow the statute. These are very tricky questions of executive power versus congressional oversight.
Jeffrey Smith, who was the C.I.A.’s general counsel under Clinton, told me that despite the technical legal arguments, there should still be ways to allow oversight, especially if the core issue is a commitment that the president has made to a foreign power.
Smith cited a time when he was at the C.I.A. and a matter came up that did not technically require reporting to Congress but still raised troubling questions. After some soul-searching within the agency, it provided a briefing to the “gang of eight” congressional leaders, and Smith told me that the same would be appropriate today.
Look, this whistle-blower’s complaint will leak. The Trump administration’s recalcitrance will simply make it all the more newsworthy.
When historians review Trump’s term, I think they will see combat between an out-of-control president and various U.S. institutions, such as the courts, the Civil Service, law enforcement, the intelligence community, the House and the news media, which generally have done a credible job of standing up for laws and norms and against one-man rule. The only institution Trump has co-opted completely is the Republican Party in Congress.

[size=16]Today’s struggle over the whistle-blower may be remembered as a central battle in that epic confrontation. The core question is whether our president can get away with weaponizing the federal government to punish political opponents, or whether legal constraints and congressional oversight can keep him in line.
This is a test of our political system, and the next few months will determine whether we pass.

Democrat Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has called her own party's failure to impeach President Donald Trump a 'national scandal.'
The freshman Congresswoman from New York made the remarks in a tweet late on Saturday, ratcheting up pressure on House Speaker Nancy Pelosi to allow impeachment to move forward.
'At this point, the bigger national scandal isn't the president's lawbreaking behavior - it is the Democratic Party's refusal to impeach him for it,' she wrote.
Ocasio-Cortez's forceful remarks join the growing clamor from some Democrats demanding that party leaders impeach the president, with the intelligence community whistleblower controversy fueling fresh outrage.

In the latest controversy, Democrats accuse Trump of asking Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy for dirt on Joe Biden, related to an investigation into a Ukrainian company that Biden's son served on the board of while his father was vice president. 
Trump says that Biden pressured the Ukrainian government to drop the investigation under threat of withholding U.S. aid.
The allegations about Trump emerged in a whistleblower complaint from a member of the U.S. intelligence community, who either heard the call with Zelenskiy or read a transcript from it, though details of the complaint have not been made public. 
Trump calls the allegations 'just another political hack job.'
'I have conversations with many leaders. It's always appropriate,' he said of the July 25 phone call with Zelenskiy that is at the heart of the controversy.

Pelosi says if reports about the complaint bear out, Trump faces 'serious repercussions' and the nation will have 'grave, urgent concerns for our national security.'
But she has long resisted calls from within her party to impeach Trump, likely knowing that Republican-controlled Senate would never convict, and fearing the spectacle would damage Democrats' chances in the 2020 election.  
A senior Democratic member of the House Judiciary Committee, which is considering whether to impeach Trump, said the incident could feed into the panel's deliberations.
'This is deadly serious,' Representative David Cicilline said on Twitter. 'If the President does not allow the whistleblower complaint against him to be turned over to Congress, we will add it to the Articles of Impeachment.' 
Democratic contenders for the party's presidential nomination are also increasingly joining the swarm calling for impeachment. 
'What is Congress waiting for? This is crazy. Unless we take action now, we will see the end of American democracy,' said Beto O'Rourke in a tweet on Saturday.  
Biden was more restrained, saying on Saturday that Trump 'could be impeached' depending on the results of a House investigation.

We all know the Republicans will never impeach him. This whole thing is a waste of time and money.

Alexandria seems intelligent in other areas but not in this one and that is sad.

I'm not sure that I understand. Why would anyone want to vote for someone who is even slightly impeachable??

I would have thought Pelosi more likely is reluctant to start proceedings until she's got all her ducks in order and is good to go with something that will succeed. Nixon's impeachment process took months - and then he left. I understand that the provable reasons for it were very similar to these. AOC's comment is totally understandable and she's appealing to the masses isn't she?

PAN - Trump's base don't care if he's impeachable. They'd vote for him no matter what he did. They don't care. I'm guessing most of the other Republicans who still support him do so because they're not sure what to believe. He's got a very good disinformation machine - probably lessons learned from Putin.

Pelosi has the experience to know what needs to be done to win the 2020 election.  After all, she was at the helm when the Dems took back the House last year. If she's not ready to impeach it's because she thinks doing it now will backfire. When she feels she has what she needs she'll move for impeachment.

I'm not a fan of AOC. She's not "appealing to the masses", she's appealing to the "progressive" wing of the Democratic Party, who IMO are not really Democrats. They proved it in 2016 when many of them didn't vote because Bernie wasn't the nominee. Childish. At election time party members need to work as a team, and they don't. AOC is busy building her own image, not trying to get a party win in 2020.

Maybe the milennials have realised their mistake, Lizzy, given that on that basis they might have let Trump in - having said that the biggest problem seems to be the Republican set-up Electoral College, which completely altered the result!!

From my perspective way over here, AOC is one of the most succinct politicians I have heard in years - look at her performances in the various committees. And she hasn't broken any laws, corporate or national intelligence-wise as far as I'm aware.............

A Stand With ICE rally organizer has told a small crowd of supporters Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg 'knows her days are numbered'. 
Randy Corporon said the 86-year-old, who recently underwent three weeks of radiation therapy for pancreatic cancer, is 'one tough lady' and deserves a 'great deal of credit for hanging in there'.  
The radio host's comments were met with laughter and cheers from those at the event in outside the Aurora Immigration and Customs Enforcement Processing Center in Colorado. 
Corporon added: 'I mean, really, if you were one of the most liberal justices in the history of the United States and you were at this pinnacle, you know, a Supreme Court Justice, and you knew that your days are numbered, I mean, who knows how long she could make it, but she's not well, she's, what, Stage 4 pancreatic cancer, I think, was the last round. 

'She knows her days are numbered and if you saw what Donald Trump is doing on the border, is trying to do to get government out of our health care just thing after thing after thing. 
'If you were that one super liberal Supreme Court justice, wouldn't you be trying to live forever?'

The comments were live streamed by Michelle Malkin, who also helped organize the second 'Stand with ICE' rally at that location since Labor Day.
Corporon went on to say Ginsburg 'really gotta try and hang on' as the 'court is really going to move the right direction if she has to step down'.  
He earlier told the crowd: 'We are standing up for the men and women of law enforcement, the men and women of ICE.' 


Ginsburg said in September that she was 'feeling very good tonight,' following her disclosure that she had completed three weeks of outpatient radiation therapy for a cancerous tumor on her pancreas and is now disease-free.
It was the fourth time over the past two decades that Ginsburg, the leader of the court's liberal wing, has been treated for cancer. 
She had colorectal cancer in 1999, pancreatic cancer in 2009 and lung cancer surgery in December.

PAN - My feeling is that the "progressives" are left-of-center, tending toward socialism - not communism. They are to the Democrats what the Tea Party was to the Republicans - an extreme faction seeking to take over the party because they couldn't succeed as a party in their own right. Vice President Mike Pence scored a first when he took a motorcade to a speech on Michigan's picturesque Mackinac Island, drawing criticism on social media from, among others, Democratic Congresswoman Rashida Tlaib.
Pence took an eight-vehicle motorcade to the island's Grand Hotel for a speech to the Republican Leadership Conference Saturday. 
He flew to Michigan, took a helicopter to the small island airport and transferred to vehicles brought by boat the night before.

Environment activist Greta Thunberg made a fiery appearance at the United Nations Climate Summit on Monday where she broke down in tears while furiously scolding international delegates.  
'I shouldn't be up here. I should be back in school on the other side of the ocean. Yet you all come to us for hope. How dare you. You have stolen my dreams and my childhood with your empty words,' the 16-year-old Swedish activist thundered in her speech at the Climate Action Summit 2019 in New York. 
Thunberg was seen at the UN headquarters Monday morning with an enraged expression on her face as US President Donald Trump upstaged her entrance by walking in behind her flanked by news reporters. 
The UN summit convened to have nations make plans to confront global warming and rising fossil fuel emissions.

Trump wasn't originally scheduled to attend the summit as he's hosting a session on religious persecution in the same building.
He upstaged Thunberg's entrance into the UN building Monday morning as he walked in after her and was flanked by reporters and cameras as Thunberg stood in the background with a livid expression on her face.
The president stayed at the conference for just 15 minutes.
The summit, entitled 'A Race We Can Win. A Race We Must Win' and convened by UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, seeks to mobilize political and economic energy to advance climate action. 
Areas of discussion included energy transition, climate finance, carbon pricing, industry transition, nature-based solutions, cities and local action and resilience. 
In the meeting Guterres pushed to end new coal plant construction by 2020. 
While the United States will not be participating, China, France, Germany, India and Russia and about 70 other countries are expected to make announcements concerning climate change at the Monday summit. 
Guterres praised young people like Thunberg for demanding change. 
'My generation has failed in its responsibility to protect our planet. That must change. The climate crisis is caused by us, and the solutions must come from us,' he said.

A UN science report released Sunday revealed that emissions into the Earth's atmosphere are continuing to surge and G-20 nations are responsible for 80 percent of those emissions, and they're still failing to meet their low targets to reduce climate impact. 
The UN estimates there needs to be between a three-fold and five-fold increase in efforts to cut greenhouse gases, to prevent global temperatures rising more than 1.5C above pre-industrial levels.
The summit came on the heels of a global Youth Climate Strike on Friday where millions of people around the world protested in streets, parks and plazas to demand faster action to address climate change. 
On Saturday, Thunberg appeared at the Youth Climate Action Summit where young leaders from around the world convened to showcase climate solutions. 
Thunberg had traveled to the US by yacht to avoid flying.

For more than 30 years the science has been crystal clear. How dare you continue to look away, and come here saying that you are doing enough, when the politics and solutions needed are still nowhere in sight.
You say you “hear” us and that you understand the urgency. But no matter how sad and angry I am, I don’t want to believe that. Because if you fully understood the situation and still kept on failing to act, then you would be evil. And I refuse to believe that.
The popular idea of cutting our emissions in half in 10 years only gives us a 50% chance of staying below 1.5C degrees, and the risk of setting off irreversible chain reactions beyond human control.
Maybe 50% is acceptable to you. But those numbers don’t include tipping points, most feedback loops, additional warming hidden by toxic air pollution or the aspects of justice and equity. They also rely on my and my children’s generation sucking hundreds of billions of tonnes of your CO2 out of the air with technologies that barely exist. So a 50% risk is simply not acceptable to us – we who have to live with the consequences.
To have a 67% chance of staying below a 1.5C global temperature rise – the best odds given by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change – the world had 420 gigatonnes of carbon dioxide left to emit back on 1 January 2018. Today that figure is already down to less than 350 gigatonnes. How dare you pretend that this can be solved with business-as-usual and some technical solutions. With today’s emissions levels, that remaining CO2 budget will be entirely gone in less than eight and a half years.
There will not be any solutions or plans presented in line with these figures today. Because these numbers are too uncomfortable. And you are still not mature enough to tell it like it is.
You are failing us. But the young people are starting to understand your betrayal. The eyes of all future generations are upon you. And if you choose to fail us I say we will never forgive you. We will not let you get away with this. Right here, right now is where we draw the line. The world is waking up. And change is coming, whether you like it or not.

Emily Thornberry today accused Donald Trump of 'trying to tear freedom apart' as she demanded the end of the 'strongman era' of world politics. 
The shadow foreign secretary took a sledgehammer to the so-called 'special relationship' as she said Mr Trump was 'not the leader of the free world'. 
She claimed the US President was instead the 'guiding light', 'hero' and 'mentor' for uncompromising leaders like Russia's Vladimir Putin.
Her comments are likely to spark controversy on the other side of the Atlantic given that a snap general election, widely expected to take place before the end of the year, could result in a Labour government. 

Links between the White House and Downing Street have been strengthened in recent weeks due to the burgeoning relationship between Mr Trump and Boris Johnson. 
But Ms Thornberry's remarks suggest Labour would take a very different approach to dealing with the UK's oldest ally. 
And it was not just Mr Trump who was targeted by Ms Thornberry during her address to activists at Labour's annual conference in Brighton as she savaged a long list of world leaders. 
But she saved her most vicious criticism for the current occupant of the White House.

Ms Thornberry said Mr Trump, pictured arriving in New York yesterday, was 'not the leader of the free world' but the 'hero' of 'strongman' leaders across the world 
She said: 'Is it any wonder we are seeing this rise in "strongman" politics when the daddy of them all - their hero, their mentor, their friend - is sitting in the White House: the so-called leader of the free world, Donald Trump.
'Well I just ask you, conference: How can you lead a free world when you are locking toddlers in cages? How can you lead a free world when you’re trying to take away the freedom of women to control their own bodies? 
'And how can you lead a free world when you are actively supporting the suppression and annexation of Palestine?
'Donald Trump is not the leader of the free world. He is the role model, the guiding light, for all those "strongman" politicians around the world who are trying to tear freedom apart.'
Ms Thornberry said 'no-one has taken more inspiration' from Mr Trump than Mohammed Bin Salman, the Crown Prince of Saudi Arabia, who she described as a 'monster'. 


Referring to the murder of Jamal Khashoggi, a journalist and critic of the Saudi Arabian government, she said: 'You know I asked the question when he visited the UK last year: "Why on earth would they roll out the red carpet for Bin Salman?"
'Well now we know why. It’s the only way to cover up the blood which is dripping from his hands from the murder of Jamal Khashoggi and the slaughter of thousands of innocent civilians in Yemen.'
Saudi Arabia has admitted Khashoggi's killing was a premeditated act carried out by government agents, but said they were 'rogue elements' who acted without official authorisation. 
Critics have claimed the killing was authorised at senior levels of the Saudi Arabian government.  
Ms Thornberry said the world was in the process of 'being consumed' by 'strongman politics'. 
'Putin killing with impunity from Syria to Salisbury,' she said. 
'Maduro plunging Venezuela into ever-deeper division and misery. Bolsonaro hailing Brazil’s military junta as a golden age.

Ms Thornberry told activists that it was time for the 'era of "strongman" politics' to come to an end






'Duterte boasting about killing Filipino street children. Netanyahu trying to turn Israel into an apartheid state. 
'Khamenei jailing innocent women in Iran as diplomatic bargaining chips. Assad, Erdogan, Orban, Sisi – the list goes on and on.'
Ms Thornberry said the 'age of impunity needs to end' and added: 'This era of "strongman" politics needs to end.  
'And yes, there are signs of hope: Jacinda Arden in New Zealand; Cyril Ramaphosa in South Africa; Antti Rinne in Finland; Abiy Ahmed in Ethiopia, and a whole generation of progressive men and women who are shaking up American politics, and putting the fear of God into Donald Trump.'
