But, Donnamarie, there was that time when George made a tasteless joke in his acceptance speech.
Something about someone's name & "jack off" ?
I'm sure our Mel will have the facts for us ! Lol

Your reference Joanna is Jack Abramoff. George asked the question why would someone name their child "Jack" with the last part of the last name being "Off". I have to think about which awards show it was though (CRS)...

melbert wrote:Directed by Angelina. Releasing at Christmas. Mr. Zamperini just passed away.
In boyhood, Louis Zamperini was an incorrigible delinquent. As a teenager, he channeled his defiance into running, discovering a prodigious talent that had carried him to the Berlin Olympics. But when World War II began, the athlete became an airman, embarking on a journey that led to a doomed flight on a May afternoon in 1943. When his Army Air Forces bomber crashed into the Pacific Ocean, against all odds, Zamperini survived, adrift on a foundering life raft. Ahead of Zamperini lay thousands of miles of open ocean, leaping sharks, thirst and starvation, enemy aircraft, and, beyond, a trial even greater. Driven to the limits of endurance, Zamperini would answer desperation with ingenuity; suffering with hope, resolve, and humor; brutality with rebellion. His fate, whether triumph or tragedy, would be suspended on the fraying wire of his will.
Appearing in paperback for the first time—with twenty arresting new photos and an extensive Q&A with the author—Unbroken is an unforgettable testament to the resilience of the human mind, body, and spirit, brought vividly to life by Seabiscuit author Laura Hillenbrand.

I've seen the trailer and it looks to be a fine film.
I'd imagine that it was a sad event for all making the film that the Hero in it didn't live long enough to see the whole film.
I liked Angie's dress at the premiere. It sort of matched the tattoos on her back !

Poor Bono had a very nasty accident......
'Three metal plates and 18 screws': U2 frontman Bono faces five-hour surgery on facial fractures, broken arm and shattered shoulder from 'high energy' bike accident
By PAUL CHAVEZ and BECKY FREETH FOR MAILONLINE
PUBLISHED: 11:21, 19 November 2014 | UPDATED: 12:32, 19 November 2014
U2 were disappointed when they had to cancel this week's residency on NBC's The Tonight Show after Bono's shock cycling incident.
But it seems like the frontman will be out of action for a lot longer than first thought as the full extent of his gruesome injuries has been revealed and it features a facial fracture, broken arm and shattered shoulder.
Bono, 54, underwent five hours of reconstructive surgery on Sunday - which included three metal plates and 18 screws needed to repair the damage - after he was involved in a 'high energy bicycle accident' in New York City's Central Park.
Five hour surgery: Bono underwent intensive surgery to reconstruct gruesome face, arm and shoulder injuries in a 'high energy bicycle accident' in New York City's Central Park on Sunday
The singer was rushed to hospital where the worst of his injuries were found to be a 'facial fracture involving the orbit of his eye' and bone 'tearing through his skin,' it was later disclosed to Rolling Stone.

WOW bicycle accident....
Few days ago we had the "bamby" celebration in Berlin and Bono flew in with his privat plane and a big part of his private plane fall off before he was landing at the Berlin Airport. Luckily nobody got hurt.
He was lucky with his plane but not with his bicycle....
It is amazing how fast you can be with you bicycle sometimes....I wonder if he got those face injuries because he didn't wear a helmet????

I've seen a picture of him on his bike...he does wear a helmet, but that doesn't protect the face.
Apparently he swerved to avoid another biker.

Bono not having a very good week at all. I knew he had this accident but did not realize how extensive his injuries were. Thats awful. Poor guy. I heard that people on their bikes ride like crazies through Central Park all the time. They go way too fast with no regard to joggers, kids and strollers.

Re: November 2014 Chit Chat
They just passed a law making the speed limit in Central Park 20 mph - for cars and bikes alike - in the hopes of cutting down on all the accidents involving pedestrians. I'm not a bike rider, but 20 mph sounds pretty fast to me. I doubt this will help much - most accidents seem to happen because riders don't watch where they're going, no matter what their speed.

Pigpen - Sorry. Just saw your post about weather. Thanks for asking, but we're fine here in the city. No snow, just weird up & down temperatures and maybe some rain this weekend. The real snow was in western upstate NY - 5 ft. in Buffalo in one day , with another 2-3 ft. expected in the next day or so. They'll be digging out for weeks - unless it warms up, and then they'll have to deal with flooding. I'm glad I don't live up there. Hope the weather's nice where you are.

"Downton" dog Isis could get iced
Another character on "Downton Abbey" may be biting the dust, but not because of consumption or cholera or being too polite to mention you've been stabbed and are bleeding out. No, apparently Lord Grantham's dog, named Isis, may not be long for the fictional world due to its unfortunate name. A rep for ITV says the dog sharing a name with the notorious terrorist group ISIS is an "unfortunate coincidence." Not to seem cruel, but would the dog dying really be that big of a deal? On the show, I mean. The first season took place in 1912, and the current fifth season — already airing in the U.K. and debuting in the U.S. in January — brings Lord Grantham and family up to 1924. And the dog was already fully grown and very well-trained when the show started, so I'm not saying but I'm saying.

Re: November 2014 Chit Chat
Anybody here watch 'Parenthood?' I love that show. The best writing and best cast on network TV, I think.
This is the last season, and there are only four episodes to go. I'm going to miss this family like they're real.
The patriarch has health problems, and last night he had a second heart attack. The writers have let it be known that a major character would die, but I'm wondering if they won't go for the obvious. There have been some clues about two other characters, whose loss would devastate a family (and me). But with 4 shows to go, maybe the writers will play it safe.
Any other 'Parenthood' watchers have an opinion on this?

I have been to lazy to watch any series lately, I stopped watching Homeland during season 4, it just wasn't the same when Brody died. Can't be bothered with Game of Thrones either at the moment or True Blood, but will probably catch up on them later on DVD. The only serie I am still watching is The Walking Dead. And I don't even like those damned zombies.

Trying to get through Season 2 of Newsroom. Aaron Sorkin sure writes stuff that makes you think.
Scandal I was live tweeting on the West Coast. At one point I actually yelled out: "HOLY SHIT"!
As to HTGAWM I've taped them but stopped watching about 6 episodes ago and plan to just watch them all over one weekend. Maybe over Thanksgiving.

Re: November 2014 Chit Chat
Lizzy, I was just saying that his character is so evil that he has to come to a bad end. Because if he's not eliminated, it will mean that other, more sympathetic characters will have to be, because he wouldn't just walk away and let things go.
He is the best reason to watch the show. I'd hate to see him go. But they've taken his character to an extreme, and I think he's been placed in a corner there's no way out of. I suppose he could save the day in another crisis and buy some favor, but he can't exactly change his motives, can he?
I'm wondering why he would put out hits on B613 agents, but leave Maya Pope alive to be found -- when all it would have taken is one shot down a hole to kill her. The story needs to do something more creative with Khandi Alexander's character anyway. I think her story arc was pretty much a waste.
You're right about 'HTGAWM.' It jumps too much, and for no good reason most of the time. The repetitive scenes drive me crazy, especially when they don't reveal anything new. I think they'd do a lot better by just telling a straight linear story. The flashbacks are filler, and they're never as good as what's actually happening. But Viola Davis is fascinating to watch in this. I wish the story would catch up to her characterization.

Way2Old - This just occurred to me. Since it seems like the VP is the new villain, and since it seems like he's responsible for Olivia's disappearance, maybe Rowan will be the one to get her back - either on his own or because Fitz asks him to. Maybe he'll set Maya loose and send her after the VP. Just a thought.

I think the VP is a vaguely drawn character who was brought in to beef up Mellie's storyline -- which worked for a while, until the writers, as they tend to do, dropped it for too long and left him underdeveloped and underused. So now him being a badass all of a sudden, who gets in the President's face and schemes to kidnap the fixer who put him in office seems like another forced storyline to me, even if he is fucking Ellen's wife.

I just noticed that Dame Maggie Smith that George is supposedly kissing in Downton Abbey? is Toby Stephens' mother. I didn't know that. Toby S is my favourite Mr Rochester. That version of Jane Eyre is the best. I am now watching my second favourite Jane Eyre with Ciaran Hinds. I only have 4 versions on DVD.

Way2Old - Re: Scandal & HTGAWM - A lot of what they're doing on both shows seems too forced to me. They're crossing the line from drama with soap overtones into the land of straight up soap opera. I'll watch when they come back in January, but maybe not for long if things don't change.

Re: November 2014 Chit Chat
I actually thought the first three or so episodes of 'Scandal' this season were an improvement -- more real drama, less melodrama and histrionics. But it looks like they're slipping down that slope again, where everything gets solved with murder.
'HTGAWM' feels like it was a high concept based on a great, complex character, and the stories can't live up to either. They could have gotten to this point in the story in half the episodes, IMO.
And I'm going to say this, knowing full well I'll be thought to be prudish and homophobic, which I am most certainly not, and risk the forfeiture of my Shondaland admission card. I'm tired of the gratuitous sex on both shows, especially 'HTGAWM,' and particularly the man/man sex scenes. I can't think of one in which the graphic nature did anything for the story. Certain characters like to fuck. Some of them are gay, and gay men blow each other and have anal sex. Okay, we get it. The first graphic scene can be creatively useful. Doing basically the same thing every week for no good reason is just lazy-ass storytelling to me.
Re: November 2014 Chit Chat
Well I never thought I'd see a day when gay sex was described as filler! HA!
As to the sex scenes, I don't think they've had a good one since Fitz followed Olivia into that computer closest... just sayin...
And although it's never been officially stated, whispers say Jon Tenney is gay. Which makes for an interesting story line given that it's with Portia. And also shows some damn good acting if it is true!

Re: November 2014 Chit Chat
On a different note -- went to see Hunger Games Mockingjay this morning.
8:30 a.m. showing and there were actually other people there! Of course, they were showing it every freakin half hour in my theater.
I hear they're projecting over $150 opening weekend. That is fucking insane!
As to what I thought of the film - overall, I enjoyed it but there were some things that were bothersome. For me, I just didn't like Julianna Moore in her role. Something about her performance just didn't gel for me. Maybe someone else in the role might have been better but i guess there's no fixing that now.
And at least the ending, which I knew going in was not going to resolve anything given that it's title clearly states it's Part 1 - left enough unsolved to make you want to see the final installment.
Jennifer made fun of her singing in the film, but I thought that scene and it's transition into another scene was really well done.
The song made it to YouTube - and she's not that bad really.
It's been quite awhile since I read the books so I don't remember how they resolve it all in the books which means I should probably read the last one again before the next film. Which I guess will be out in about a year. Yup I checked the release date for the final is November 20, 2015. Geez I could be dead by then! brahahahaha

Yeah, it is insane. And what's even more insane is that it's not doing as well as the previous two 'Hunger Games' opening days.
I'll probably see it in about a year, when it hits Netflix.

Good idea. I'll probably have to see it again just to remember what happened before the next one comes out.

I remember that scene. "I may not be able to control my erections around you, but that doesn't mean I want you."
Ah, Fitz, you sweet talker you.
I'd never heard that Tenney is gay. Not that it matters, except it's funny his character is fucking a lesbian. I know he hasn't aged too well. It took me a moment to realize it was him the first time he showed up on 'Scandal.'
