What to say about George Clooney’s girlfriend, Elisabetta Canalis. She’s been given an “among whom was” by French model Karima Menad who is under criminal investigation for prostitution and drugs, by Italian prosecutor Frank Di Maio.
George’s girlfriend remains at the centre of a sex and drugs scandal amid allegations that she did cocaine when she worked as a ‘guest-for-hire’ at two Milan VIP nightclubs back in 2007/8.

Canalis has not yet been arrested but is likely to be called in for questioning after her name appeared at least twice in sworn testimony given by Karima Menad. In her sworn statement the French model claimed she saw Canalis use drugs.

“I used cocaine along with other people, among whom was Elisabetta Canalis.”

Di Maio doesn’t care that Canalis is now mixing in the more elevated society that surrounds her lover George Clooney. He believes that she, Menad, (and other models and showgirls) are complicit in the drugs and prostitution ring being run by the clubs. He says they were paid to ply customers with drugs and entice them into bed.

Di Maio is also very interested in the numerous photos of Canalis and her ‘clients.’

It's 1am on the night of Roberto Cavalli's Cannes Film Festival party. Sheathed in a sequined Cavalli minidress, Rosario Dawson is perched on the upper deck of Cavalli's yacht, roaring with laughter. 'I wanna walk the carpet with a snake wrapped around me!' she announces to the assorted coterie, including Janet Jackson, Carine Roitfeld and Elisabetta Canalis, George Clooney's Italian girlfriend and Cavalli vixen-in-chief. It is an eye-popping introduction to the decadent world of Mr Cavalli, now 70 but still sporting a mahogany permatan that puts Pippa Middleton to shame. 'Sometimes I say to a person, "Take my shuttle and come to my planet," ' he explains, reclining on a pile of silver snakeskin-print cushions on his 134ft iridescent purple and green pleasure-boat, unmistakable among the Identikit white craft of Cannes' harbour. 'Here you start to learn how to walk, how to speak the language.' But not everyone is invited. The boat, called RC and worth a reputed £18 million, is Cavalli's island: 'I love to have the water around my island, and I love that the people have to cross my bridge.' He sniggers with delight. 'My bridge, with the guy in front, saying, "Who are you?" I love it!'

Roberto Cavalli was born in a small village outside Florence in 1940. His father, an engineer who surveyed mines, was killed by the Nazis; after which his mother Marcella moved the family to Florence and started a small dressmaking business. Roberto was shy at school, but while studying at Florence's Academy of Art he began experimenting with fabric-printing techniques and, at just 20, opened a factory to print patterns on to leather. By the 1960s he had a boutique in St Tropez called Limbo, selling patchwork denim and boho beachwear to Brigitte Bardot and co. It was here that he acquired his love for fast boats and deep tans, although he has never been much of a playboy. He first married his childhood sweetheart Silvanella and then, in 1980, he married his current wife Eva, a former Miss Austria with a forensic fashion brain. Eva is credited with developing her husband's animal-print and spray-on denim label into an international phenomenon beloved by Beyoncé, Jennifer Lopez and Madonna.

Roberto and Eva live the lives of international rock stars. In the countryside near Florence they have the Cavalli family home and also recently built a magnificent modern studio for Roberto that can change colour at the flick of a switch; there are apartments in Milan, New York and London, and a helicopter in the same iridescent purple as the boat. They breed horses and make wine from their own vineyard. Cavalli once paid three times over the odds for an antique dragon choker for Eva at Christie's in London: 'When I was rich I enjoyed very much buying beautiful jewellery. I think Eva has a wonderful collection of jewellery. I felt very stupid afterwards but she was very happy. I spent everything because I like to spend - ah, I love to spend! It's my biggest vice. I want to die poor,' he sighs.

That said, Cavalli's version of no longer being rich is all relative. Last year his company's revenue was €176.2 million and this week's festivities are to celebrate the opening of a new boutique in Cannes. In September yet another boutique will open on Sloane Street and there are outlets in over 50 countries around the world selling Cavalli's creations. There are the accessories designed by his daughter Rachele, a diffusion line called Just Cavalli, a jeans line, a fragrance launching next year, wine, vodka, and Roberto Cavalli Casa, for those keen to recreate Cavalli world at home (think carved snake banisters, zebra throws and lots and lots of fur). There is also an animal-print-heavy underwear line, which has Elisabetta Canalis as its face - and very impressive body. 'Beauty… Beauty is not everything, but it is a great business card,' says Cavalli.

Eli, or 'La Canalis' as she is known in the Italian press, is the 32-year-old daughter of a scientist and a university lecturer and has long been famous in Italy as one of the presenters of the current affairs satire show Striscia la Notizia. But since she appeared on Clooney's arm at the Venice Film Festival in September 2009, she is recognised the world over, making her the perfect ambassador for Cavalli's lamé thongs.

Cavalli has known Elisabetta since she was a teenager, when she was a 'little girlfriend' of a friend of his, and they do seem to have a very affectionate relationship. At lunch on the boat there is a family atmosphere (despite the silver giraffe table decorations and champagne on ice), with Cavalli piling my plate high (twice) with risotto, artichoke pasta parcels, fresh prawns, scallops and salad, while Elisabetta, a tiny white dressing gown barely covering her micro bikini, gets stuck into the edamame beans. 'I have eeeeeten so much,' she says, tapping her rock-hard stomach in dismay. She seems more worried about this than the assorted paparazzi loafing on the quayside (their pictures will later appear in the Daily Mail, The Sun and Daily Mirror); she considers their constant presence a small price to pay for what she refers to as 'my private situation' - that is, her relationship with Clooney, probably the most eligible bachelor in the world.

It is not hard to see why Clooney was attracted to Elisabetta. She is instantly likeable, a chatty girl with an endearingly clumsy streak, almost knocking herself out as she trips while rushing inside to fetch something from Cavalli's library of art books. She read modern languages at Milan University but grew up in the beautiful northern Sardinian city of Sassari. 'When I was a kid my parents used to leave me on the beach where we had a holiday home... people would ask my parents if I was adopted because I would go very, very dark.' She still likes to spend summers at the family home: 'For me, summer is beach - T-shirts, swimming suits, flip-flops, maybe a shirt, that's it. I like small Brazilian bikinis... they are the best, the most sexy,' she says. Cavalli agrees, pointing out that her 'great teets' are an essential attribute for a beautiful woman. Elisabetta's amazing body is, she says, down to horse riding - she competed in showjumping and dressage as a teenager and, after a break of ten years, has now taken it up again, most recently jumping at Cowdray Park in West Sussex. When she's in LA she's fond of the alarming-sounding water bootcamp: 'When I started, I thought it was going to kill me,' she tells me cheerily.

Although naturally gifted with charisma and good looks, Elisabetta is hard-working. Her alarm clock recently woke up the whole Cavalli boat at 6am, even though she, Roberto and his guests had all been partying until late. 'I could have keeelled her,' says Cavalli. For her part, Elisabetta says, 'It is so much fun waking up on the boat, working with Cavalli, staying with him and Eva. It isn't really like working at all.'

Lunch is followed by the store opening, a beach party at the Miramar and, finally, a more intimate gathering back on RC, where Rosario keeps the party going into the small hours. The boat has seen many similar nights of hedonism in the classic Mediterranean party ports of Portofino, Ibiza and St Tropez, with guests including P Diddy, Mariah Carey, the Beckhams, Elton John and David Furnish. What makes a bad boat guest, I wonder aloud. 'Someone who is boring,' says Cavalli.

The revelry continues the following day with the annual AIDS charity AMFAR's gala where Cavalli hosts a table of 'beautiful woman': including Elisabetta in shimmering gold and Goldie Hawn in asymmetrical white. Cavalli observes his court from behind his space-age sunglasses with pleasure. 'What I love about women is the familiarity,' he explains. 'I enjoy when big stars come to me - or friends - to make a special dress. When someone comes to me and asks me to make a dress, to me it means that she needs me...'

At 5am the next morning, on the roof of a villa owned by one of the Facebook founders, Cavalli's AMFAR revellers are still dancing. Karolina Kurkova is queen of the night, while Leonardo DiCaprio hides under his hat, chuckling and nursing a drink and a cigar. Wearing a white Cinderella Cavalli confection, I'm introduced to a tall, dark, sulkily good-looking boy, one Daniele Cavalli, Roberto's son. He swiftly appraises my frock, nods approvingly and twirls me around the dancefloor. By this point, it's no longer dawn; the sun has risen and is glittering over the Mediterranean. 'To make a party in Cannes is like putting a drop of water in the ocean,' observes Cavalli sagely. After three days in Cavalli world, this seems a perfectly sensible statement. ES

Meanwhile Canalis prepares for the Sanremo Festival to be held February 15 to 19. "I will not be a valley, but first lady" - hopes to "Gioa. Adding that it would prevent "the press conferences of Sanremo. We would send my avatar. Some journalists known to be treacherous. I learned to be careful. Perché il mio nome viene collegato a quello di George. E quello che dico viene tradotto in altri Paesi e le notizie degenerano”.

Spazio anche per le vicende politiche degli ultimi mesi: “Se da un lato c’è un politico che può aver sbagliato, dall’ altro c’è una grossa intrusione nel privato. Non voglio farmi disorientare dal gossip, preferisco concentrarmi sulla politica. Detto questo, la politica è anche decoro e serietà il che – prosegue – implicherebbe dei sacrifici nei confronti degli italiani. Sono un po’ confusa”.</sup>
