Hmmm................... I can't help wondering if this is going to replace one of their other properties, and if so, which one? Could he be considering relocating his home base or his go-to vacation home?
With homes in LA, NYC, Sonning, Como and now this (and possibly one in Cabo) - oh, yeah, and one in Kentucky - and maybe Amal's London flat - he's becoming a real estate baron!

Well, Var in the south of France is not far from anywhere in Europe, and a quick hop in his plane
from London or Como. Let's see if it happens!
Hope you're okay, Lizzy, vaccination wise. Doesn't your local doctor have access to the necessary?

If this is true , I don't think he is replacing any. This is probably another investment property we know he loves to buy real estate.
The mayor has a big mouth, trying to get tourists to his town no doubt.

Annemarie - Maybe it's just me, but I'm just enough of a socialist to think that owning more property than you can possibly use is a bit selfish - unless it's for commercial purposes.
Having what basically amounts to a bunch of pieds-a-terre in several locations means that those properties sit empty most of the time. I guess it doesn't matter for a large estate since there probably isn't much of a market for them - and whoever could afford them probably has a lifestyle similar to George's. Still, it seems somehow wasteful to me to own properties that are hardly used. Anyway, it'll never be my problem.
PAN - Thanks for asking. I'll be fine. A new site just opened nearby and will be taking appointments next week.

Well interesting if true. Odd that the mayor would say George bought the property to rest. Seems that Sonning and Como provide rest and relaxation already. No way to tell if George owns anything in Cabo any longer. Nor that he and Amal have actually been staying at the NYC high rise property. It seems that the times they’ve been in NY they have rented brownstones.

Last year rande and Cindy were in Mexico with their family .The apartment in New York has two bedrooms it maybe too
small for them all. My guess is if they still own it they are renting it out . Cindy and Rande also have another apartment
in Nyc. it is I think near Central park.

They bought in the same block, a floor above I think. But originally someone thought it would
be ideal for Amal both at the UN and the university........also investment.
I wonder if the French place is something to do with the twins education, or the wine, or an
investment, or all three given that His Nibs prefers land to stocks and shares..........

Re: George and Amal 'buying a wine estate in Brignoles, Var' by May 10th
You guys are making my point for me. People like Rande, George and others who buy property that sits vacant most of the time - whether because they're waiting for a buyer who will then sell it on, or because they want it for themselves for a few days or weeks a year - are keeping much-needed housing stock off the market and helping to inflate real estate prices.
Yes, it is their money and yes, if they didn't buy it someone else probably would. I know all the arguments in their favor, but I still think it's a bit selfish. If they want to spend time somewhere there are options other than buying property that could be used by full-time residents.

Yes, you're right in principle, Lizzy - but is this the right sort of housing stock that most people
are looking for?
The one thing that George does do with all of his homes is employ those in need (some of
whom are refugees with terrible pasts)

George also shares his homes with his family and friends so they aren't just sitting empty . I think last year is the only year that many of his homes were not used .

Re: George and Amal 'buying a wine estate in Brignoles, Var' by May 10th
PAN - I did say in an earlier post that a property like the one in France has a very limited market and probably wouldn't be a primary home for many who have the money to buy it.
However, smaller homes such as apartments or brownstones would be available to a much wider market if real estate investors didn't think there were uber-rich buyers willing to pay whatever they asked. I'm not saying George alone is responsible for the situation. I don't know how often his properties are occupied or by whom. I do know that in many cities there is a large luxury housing market and a dearth of affordable housing for the people who actually live in the cities full time and do the actual work of making the city function.

Re: George and Amal 'buying a wine estate in Brignoles, Var' by May 10th
Well, that's a shame. Here there seem to many blocks going up on a rent-to-buy-scheme. Some of my son's friends have decided to go that route rather than paying £800 plus a month to rent.
The housing market is currently bonkers here. Since the start of the pandemic the Chancellor of the Exchequer cancelled what is known as stamp duty here - a government fee of say £12,000 - obviously to keep the housing market afloat.
Plus interest rates are incredibly low - again to keep business going - and so getting a mortgage has been a lot easier and young people have a chance to buy if they have enough saved and a decent salary (plus Ma and Pa's help in some cases) and people are also selling up and moving out of the big cities on the basis that they are unlikely to ever have to go into an office five days a week. I think the pandemic has definitely made people more aware of their surroundings and now more people are looking for properties with larger gardens

Re: George and Amal 'buying a wine estate in Brignoles, Var' by May 10th
PAN - A couple of questions: 1. Are the rent-to buy flats part of government sponsored housing or are they private developments?
2.Is the stamp duty applied when someone buys a house or flat as some sort of mortgage tax? Would it apply to the people who rent to buy when they finally become owners of their home?
Housing in NY is expensive. Younger people tend to have a roommate or two unless they are rich or their parents help out. There has been a moratorium on evictions since the pandemic because so many people were forced out of work and couldn't pay their rent. Whether it will be extended remains to be seen, but the landlords are crying poverty even though they will get government subsidies and a lot of people still aren't back to work.
There seem to be many people who would like to keep working remotely but it's too soon to tell if that will be a practice adopted by many businesses. If it is, there's a segment of the work force that, I'm sure, would be happy to move out to the suburbs. I think the difference between here and the UK is that for you getting to the city center is less distant than it is here.

Re: George and Amal 'buying a wine estate in Brignoles, Var' by May 10th
I was just thinking today that the solution to our housing crisis is simply not to allow people to own a second property unless they can prove they themselves live in it at least six months a year. There was an article today about Cornwall which has seen both rent and buying enquiries more than double this year. It's mostly driven by Londoners who want a nice second home in the country, near the sea, but it means that locals can't buy property themselves because they're just priced out. Then they often see these homes sit empty for months at a time. Of course, any politician who suggested this solution would be voted out of office the same day because it would cause a massive crash in property prices and rents. So much easier to keep building on the green belt as they are where I live.
Anyway, back to George. Are we sure he's really buying this place and not scouting for a film again? Every time he goes location scouting in Europe, we get reports that he's buying something.

Re: George and Amal 'buying a wine estate in Brignoles, Var' by May 10th
Katie - Totally agree with you on residence requirements. Property should be occupied at least half the year - if not by the owner then by someone of their choosing - but it should not sit empty! Maybe some sort of tax for each month the property sits vacant?
Anyway, re: George. Do we know of any project he's working on that could be shot there? It just occurred to me that this is a large property that might lend itself to a production hub for him. Maybe set up a studio and editing facilities on a larger scale than possible at his other homes? Just wondering.

Well, it sounds legit, but I'd trust it more if it was confirmed by someone other than the mayor who leaked it in the first place. Also, isn't 8 million euros a low price for such a large property?

Mm, and the mayor may know more than we think, because he may also be the notary whose
job is to sign off the legal documents to allow the sale.....
Apparently this property's vineyards are a private affair and not a business

Looks lovely! I wonder if he'll sell up his Como estate, then?
Given Amal speaks French, then it might make sense to have a summer home in France where the twins could learn to speak French too, rather than so-called 'Italian'?

It's very pretty isn't it? Yep, I wondered if it was a stop in France (and a few French lessons for
the twins) and then move on to the Italian lakes.
Can't help wondering if all the stories re ownership are a bit of a publicity smokescreen....

That's okay - what I was referring to Katie was the numerous number of newspaper stories locally about another potential purchaser - or not - which has now descended into nothing so
that nobody knows what is going on - or not!
Which is usually a good way in PR terms to move the agenda about a Clooney move - big headlines - onto other matters in the region......
Not sure I've explained it well enough but that was the gist of my comment...

PAN - I thought I knew what you meant before you explained - now I'm confused. How does George moving into the area (or not) move attention to other matters in the region? Somehow I don't think that's what you meant.
