Assuming this story is accurate it could have been the Gerbers who found this new apartment complex before the Clooneys. Seems that Rande and Cindy have bought and sold a number of residences during their marriage. Maybe they were looking to move from their Madison Avenue apartment, found this new property and mentioned it to the Clooneys. Who knows ....

For most people, a few dinners, phone calls and an annual Christmas card suffice when it comes to maintaining friendships.
But George and Amal Clooney, and their best friends Cindy Crawford and Rande Gerber, have gone one step further - and bought adjacent properties... for the second time.
The supermodel and her tycoon husband have splashed out £11 million on a brand new, panoramic apartment directly above the Clooneys’.

It comes exactly a year after the two couples sold their side-by-side Mexican getaways for a cool £80 million.


According to sources close to the foursome, Clooney, 55, and Gerber, 54, missed one another so much, they decided to recreate their erstwhile holiday set-up.
Six months after the Hollywood star and his human rights lawyer wife paying a reported £30 million for a luxury apartment in midtown Manhattan, New York, their chums have followed suit.
The two homes are said to be one on top of the other and whilst the idea of interconnecting doors was mooted, they eventually decided against any secret passageways. Instead, they will have to traipse up the stairs - or get the lift - like regular residents.

Last night (weds) a US property insider said: ‘Rande’s loft apartment is not only almost identical, but sits directly above George and Amal’s.
‘Their pads are both “high-floor numbers” meaning they both get the best of the city views in the 60-plus storey tower.
‘They loved their time as neighbours in Mexico and after selling-up their homes, realised just how much they missed one another.
‘George can’t exactly pop over to a regular neighbour and ask for some sugar, but with Cindy and Rande he feels totally safe.
‘The boys also love their tequila, and can have a nightcap in the privacy of one of their new homes.
‘It is the perfect scenario.’

It means both couplings can move in next month when the tower - one of New York’s most exclusive residences - is expected to be completed.
As well as such close proximity, the couples will be able to enjoy cosy movie nights at the complex’s cinema, or pampering massages and facials within the on-site spa.
An indoor cinema and several bars and restaurants are also on-tap should they fancy a spontaneous double date.

Naturally there is also a pristine indoor pool, complete with mood lighting, and a state-of-the-art gym.
Happily, the foursome know from experience they are compatible neighbours.
Although both have homes in California, just a few miles apart, in 2009 the actor and Gerbe - who own a tequila company together - collaborated on a project to build two lavish ocean-view homes in Los Cabos, Mexico.

Speaking about the decision to live in one another’s pockets, Miss Crawford - one of the original supermodels - told Architectural Digest magazine: ‘Our lives go back and forth.
‘We’ll have cocktails at our place and dinner at George’s, and vice versa.
‘They’re (the houses) not twins, but more like sisters or cousins.’

I don't really understand this piece of reporting, unless the writer thinks adjacent means apartments one floor above the other..........

This was first reported when George and Amal "bought" their apartment.  Wonder why they're repeating it now?

..... because they are the Daily Fail.

To me 'adjacent' means next to in any direction.

With residences in Studio City, CA; Lake Como, Italy; and England, it only makes sense that George and Amal Clooney were ready for a permanent place in New York City – especially now that they're the new parents of twins. According to Page Six, the couple purchased a luxury apartment at One Hundred East Fifty Third Street, and it's really something special. Although they did not opt for the penthouse, listed for $65 million, they reportedly went for a unit in the skyscraper building, which is expected to be completed next year. The site reports that George and Amal decided this would be the perfect location to buy an apartment because of its close proximity to the United Nations for Amal, who will also be teaching at Columbia Law School. But of course, the over-the-top "hotel-like" amenities did help convince the couple.

The first two levels of the building are occupied by French chef Joël Robuchon with a gourmet marketplace and restaurant. There's a wellness facility with a Pilates and ballet room, a yoga room, a sauna and steam room, a 60-foot sunlit swimming pool, and so much more. The building has full concierge services with a "dedicated lifestyle manager, global travel agents, personal shopping, and priority event access." Totally underwhelmed. This place is a "Crate & Barrel" catalog all the way. Bland trendy. For the kind of money residents are paying you'd think the place would be designed with a sense of style. Even the "artwork" looks like catalog buys.

This is the kind of building that breeds contempt for the wealthy. It is one of many destroying the character of this city. Glass and chrome, soulless and cold and only occasionally occupied - catering to the very rich who pop in and out of the city on their way to somewhere else while the people who really live in this city and make it work can't find a decent place to live. (Sorry for the rant, but it's a pet peeve. Too many luxury buildings tenanted by people who rarely live in them are crowding out affordable housing for working NYers who need to live here every day.)

Ok, before we get too carried away, I'm assuming that as their apartment hasn't been built yet, this is just an interior designer's idea of what could be done with the space. Safe and bland - and IMO very hotel-y.

Katie - It not only looks like a hotel, it sounds like one, too. The only difference being that the residents own the apartments.

There have been recent complaints about tenants of buildings like this (huge windows - no curtains or blinds) having sex in full view of their neighbors. (Reminiscent of Fassbender in "Shame".) Not appreciated - especially by people who have kids. I hope the Clooneys and Gerbers remember to draw the drapes!

Thanks, PAN. I was wondering when the building would be ready for tenants. Have to say I'm less than impressed, but that's on me I guess. I like the character of the Woolworth building 100X more than the others - including 100 E53rd. Other than the pool, which is very nice to have, the place looks to me like every office building I've ever worked in - and that includes the condo interiors they showed.

I know everyone has their own personal style, but this place is so "modern" that I think it would be hard to style it any other way - unless this is the style you like to begin with. It reminds me of the waiting room at the dentist's office.

The advantage here is that it's close to the UN - and it's very discreet i e cars drive straight in. But it doesn't seem like either of their tastes given the other houses they live in - all of which have a great history - or at all like the types of hotels they enjoy staying in NYC which are usually art deco  e g Bemelsman Bar

I can see the attraction to having a centrally located place where you can leave some of your stuff while you jet around the world. The building seems to offer decent amenities, too. I just think they could have probably found something with more character.

I wonder if they were influenced by Cindy and Rande - or if it was the other way around.

It’s very elegant and modern but I agree.  It doesn’t seem to be in line with George and Amal’s taste.  At least if their Sonning home is any indication.  May be that they won’t be spending too much time there and location, privacy and security were more important.

The Woolworth is a standout to me too.  Its  history alone gives it a unique distinction.

I think investment in it happened before the twins came along, so it could be just that in the end. After all the Gerbers seem to do this and own a string of bars in NYC too, so maybe it's that and something to do with tax too.........

I guess they might have bought it to flip the way Rande and Cindy do with some of their properties. There are certainly enough uber-rich idiots willing to overpay for a piece of real estate in NYC that they visit a couple of times a year - and I have to include G&A in that group. Their willingness to pay whatever developers ask is destroying the housing market in the city for people who actually live and work here.

Obviously G&A aren't solely responsible for the situation, and they have every right to buy into a luxury property if they can afford it. I hope they will be very happy there. It's just that when buildings like that get the prices they ask it discourages developers from building anything affordable for the "real" New Yorkers who do the work that makes the city run.

I think it's an investment, it only has three bedrooms. Now with the twins it seems too small with them the twins and nannies.

There is no money it seems in building for the people who keep this city running. The city is selling off city project playgrounds and parking lots to developers to build luxury housing it is just ridiculous.

I have no idea how much people are charged in taxes to buy houses in NYC - or the USA for that matter, but here in the UK there is a range of different charges involved in purchase (ie legal fees for conveyancing etc etc.

The biggest charge known as stamp duty is what you pay the government to move (i e it's a tax).

But if you managed to buy a house under £300,000 you wouldn't have to pay anything.

At the opposite end of the scale anybody who buys a house worth over £1,500,000 has to pay the government 12% of the price they paid........

PAN - Being a renter I really don't know what taxes apply when you purchase a house or apartment in NYC. From what my friends tell me, though, the taxes they pay for water and city services add on to the "real estate" taxes that are supposed to be based on the value of their property - although the rate of those taxes depend on where you live. I don't know what taxes would apply to a condo in Manhattan, but the monthly/annual maintenance fees are definitely very high.

This is a very expensive city to live in and it is becoming even more so. If the super rich would stop over-paying for luxury properties the prices would drop and more housing stock would come on the market for the other 90% of the city's people.

Rents in London (just for comparison, Lizzy) are quite a few pennies depending on the area of course, but it is not unusual to pay £750-850 rent per room a month in an apartment with friends - and that does not include the deposit you've put down to secure the contract from the landlords/owners.

So young people have to work very hard to save for a deposit on their own property - and property prices are almost prohibitive here. A one bedroom apartment for instance 20 miles outside London would be just under £300,000

PAN - The situation here is much the same. Manhattan has always been a place where young people just starting out could not manage without at least one roommate. When you sign a lease you have to pay 'first and last months rent" or first month's rent and a month's rent as security (in case you damage the premises). You can expect a rent increase every couple of years, the amount depending on your lease and the rent regulations at the time - they vary from year to year depending on the economy. (It would be funny if it wasn't so serious. Both the landlords and the tenants go before the Rent Guidelines Board and plead poverty!)

The rents in the outer boroughs (Brooklyn, the Bronx, Staten Island and Queens) used to be considerably lower and the apartments larger, but that's changing quickly. People with money - but not quite as much as G&A and friends- are moving out of Manhattan and bringing the real estate vultures with them. The new apartments they build are smaller and more expensive.

More and more often young couples who would have had their own home are moving back in with their parents. Often it's to save up for a place of their own but sometimes it's because they can't afford to make it on their own. It's a difficult situation all around.

Well I guess we're talking about two of the most popular cities on the planet where investment has followed from that.

What seems to be happening here, depending on ability, is that parents to a lesser (or greater) degree are helping their children to buy or contributing in some way, because property is such a good investment, apart of course from them having a roof over their head.

Some parents believe that it's better to do this than leave their money to death duties and government taxes! They have a point.

It's not that different here. Most parents help their children as much as they can. The problem is that more and more often they can't help as much as they'd like or as much as the kids need.

Mm, and I don't think it's likely to change anytime soon, Lizzy. Here in the UK there are also rent to buy schemes too, and shared buying i e people who are not couples but are just trying to get on the property ladder - not necessarily easy to find either

PAN - Here it seems that "rent to buy" usually applies to private homes - at least here in NY. It's my understanding that a building owner can't sell individual apartments. They have to offer all the apartments for sale to the existing tenants and can only go forward if the majority of the tenants agree - thus turning the building into a condominium. Whether a condo owner can rent out their apartments depends on the condo association's rules.

Here in the more Central and Rural areas of U.K.
one can buy a modern detached five bedroomed,
double garaged house for around £450,000.

I can never understand why folk live in such
a busy and expensive area as in the London area !

I know how hot my conservatory gets in the summer, 
even with the blinds down....80c !

I came from the country to the 'burbs because the work was here.....

The house I live in is worth quite a bit more becos it's easy to get into London for work. It's all bonkers, but somebody would pay that I guess, and make a fortune if they rented it out

It seems like it's the same all over. The further out you go, the more you get for your money. Sadly, a majority of the work is in the city center and a lot of people can't afford to live there - or even within easy commute. I know people who commute well over an hour to get to work because they can't afford to live closer.

Now commuting is becoming so expensive that you're actually not saving much by living further out (though you do get more for your money). Since so much of the city's housing market is dedicated to people like G&A, who drive up prices for everyone else, it's putting a lot of people in a real bind.
