Amal Clooney's mother Baria Alamuddin has made a very rare comment about her daughter and son-in-law to praise their charitable work.
The political journalist gushed that she was 'immensely proud' of Amal and George's involvement in several good causes and activism.
Speaking with HELLO! after the couple made the magazine's Kind List, the proud mum added that kindness was especially needed in the current global climate.

Baria said: 'I am immensely proud of all Amal and George's charitable work, in too many fields to do justice to here.
'Particularly deserving of mention is George's decades of activism on behalf of Sudanese people; along with Amal's pro bono activities on behalf of journalists around the world.
'I passionately believe that all acts of human kindness serve to make this world a less severe and forbidding place; and in the current global climate of intolerance, xenophobia and demonization we are in desperate need of every drop of kindness we can get.'

The Clooneys have been very generous with their money over the years, with the couple recently donating money to their local theatre The Mill at Sonning Theatre, in Berkshire.
While in April they also gave more than £800,000 to charities helping the NHS, Lebanese food banks and the Los Angeles Mayor’s Fund.
Amal and George also founded the Clooney Foundation for Justice which advocates for justice through accountability for human rights abuses around the world.

Amal's mother Baria has rarely spoken about her family, however she did discuss her daughter in a feature piece with Vogue back in 2018.
During the interview Baria revealed that doctors initially told her to abort her pregnancy due to a placenta condition but she ignored their advice after having dreams of her future daughter's face.
'My pregnancy with Amal was a rather difficult one,' Baria said, adding that she spent two months in hospital with placenta previa.

'At some point I was told that I should lose the baby. I said no. I kept on having these dreams in which I would see her face and how she was going to look.'
Baria said Amal - who now has three-year-old twins Ella and Alexander with husband George - was born 'exactly' as she saw her in her dreams.

When Amal was young the family moved to London where she excelled at school.

I didn't know her father was in the travel industry. I thought he was a professor.

He was - professor of business studies at the American University in Beirut. He was also
involved with Lebanon's airline - later Middle East Airlines. But what the history of that is I'm
not sure. Pretty sure the Lebanese War must have affected that.
I think it was his mother who was one of the first women to get a degree too

Thanks for the info. I find what I know of Amal's family a bit confusing.

Re: I'm immensely proud': Amal Clooney's mother makes rare comment about her daughter and son-in-law George as she gushes about their charitable work
I know a little bit about Amal's family because I understand arabic and I watched all Baria alamuddin's interviews so it's Baria's mother who got the degree -not the first woman but among the first women to do so- and she's Jordanian-Palestinian btw.
Amal's father as stated by Baria was Vice President at the World Tourism Organization, a professor of buisness studies at the AUB, and used to run (IDK if still) his own tourism agency.
Besides this, from her interviews you understand that for her joining the Alamuddin Family is a thing because they have a good reputation in Lebanon for being well educated and obviously rich.
In her interviews she also explained how George and Amal met, the proposal that was surprising to all of them ( and it is confusing because she litterally says that it was on George's birthday and Amal was teaching at Haravrd and taht before going Baria asked her daughter to avoid paparazzi... because as she said their family is conservative ), how George loves lebanese food the twins too, she praises George for being the perfect husband to her daughter and for being open and understanding to their culture and she always insist on the fact that Amal is first and before anything else a lebanese so yeah that's a sum up I hope it helps you.

Thanks Lilia. (That's such a beautiful name!) It's interesting to get Baria's viewpoint. I find it ironic that she told Amal to avoid paparazzi and now she's married the best known movie star in the world and Baria's fine with it.

I don't know if Baria is fine with it, but maybe has made her peace with it? And her attitude (older generation) may not reflect Amal's attitude.

Mm, I'd think that George is their guardian on all of that stuff - and Baria knows all about the
media given that she's part of it on both sides of the aisle as it were! And some things were
obviously a shock - but it has worked to Amal's advantage because they've turned it around
.
and used the media to do good and support good causes whilst also suing the paps
Remember this from Washington?

I think Baria while not liking papparazi , knew she wasn't going to stop Amal from marrying the man she loved.
So she had to accept the fact they come with George. Of course George being a wonderful , kind, loving and caring
helped as well.

Re: I'm immensely proud': Amal Clooney's mother makes rare comment about her daughter and son-in-law George as she gushes about their charitable work
My first thought was that Baria would know all about the media attention Amal could expect from a relationship with George since she was part of the media herself. Still seems to me that, even with the paparazzi attention, Amal got the best of the bargain.party animal - not! wrote:

Maybe, but not sure I could deal with the death threats because I married someone well-known

This is what Amal said in the Vogue interview.

PAN - I don't think the death threats come because she married George. If anything, I think he has had to deal with them because of her and the work she does - although the way things are in this country now, his political views and activities are bringing him his own share of threats, I'm sure.

I think he as a celebrity has dealt with threats even before Amal. There was that nut who showed up at his premiere and
upset Nina and Nick.
There was also the threat that he should dump Sara or else.

Annemarie - I think he dealt with a different kind of threats before he married Amal. I think the threats back then were more from random nuts and crazy fans. The threats Amal gets are from organized terror groups and hostile governments. Much scarier, IMO.

Re: I'm immensely proud': Amal Clooney's mother makes rare comment about her daughter and son-in-law George as she gushes about their charitable work
My 2 cents- I just never sensed from what I’ve read that there was much hesitation in embracing George once they got to know him. The way Lilia described the Alamuddin family it does seem they were protective of their reputation. Baria being in the media business comes across as a real savvy businesswoman and very supportive of strong women. I suspect after meeting George and spending some time with him Baria was won over. I think she probably was confident enough in Amal to make the right decision. Amal did.

Agree - and according to her cousin Tarek Miknas (who is part of huge worldwide advertising
agency based in NYC) they were all bowled over because he did all the right things - and
remember she kept her distance from him for a while.
As for the death threats (ISIS or whoever) they know only too well what a threat the Clooneys'
work in all areas is to them and what they want to achieve - in every possible way.
