Even though The Avengers: Age Of Ultron is going to own next summer, there are also other exciting stuff coming in those months and one of those things is Brad Bird's Tomorrowland. Disney recently unveiled a teaser trailer and, while not many footage was shown, it was enough to make me excited for this intriguing film.
However, Tomorrowland not only looks like an exciting endeavor but it is also an original and fresh live-action film from Disney and that's cause of celebration because it may be the only one for a while. Unfortunately, Disney's live-action division is now hell-bent in only producing "safe" projects and that's why we have fairy tales re-imaginings for years to come. This year's Maleficent just cemented that notion by becoming a box office success, even if the film was of very low quality. Sadly, Disney sustained heavy losses with original projects like Prince of Persia, John Carter and The Lone Ranger so it's not hard to see why they just want to play it safe. Still, just recycling fairy tales (which already have perfectly fine animated adaptations) is hardly an exciting prospect.
We still don't know how Tomorrowland will fare next year but Brad Bird is an accomplished director and I have faith that he created a unique film that will appeal to audiences and critics alike. If Tomorrowland is a hit, perhaps it'll make Disney greenlight more ambitious and original projects instead of new versions of Cinderella, Beauty and the Beast, The Jungle Book and (big sigh) Dumbo. Maybe then, Disney will revive David Fincher's 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea and Guillermo Del Toro's Haunted Mansion or even move forward with the Artemis Fowl adaptations. Whatever the outcome, Tomorrowland represents the Disney that took risks and dared to do ambitious projects. Let's hope is still alive somewhere inside the recycle bin.
