EXCLUSIVE: Disney has been mum about its plans for the Super Bowl, but we’ve learned that the studio has bought a 30-second ad for its George Clooney starrer Tomorrowland to air during Sunday’s game on NBC. The sci-fi pic, the latest theme-park adaptation Disney is grooming to be a blockbuster, has a May 22 release date.
Disney had plenty of tentpoles from its Marvel stable it could showcase during TV’s most-watched event, with The Avengers: Age Of Ultron set for a May 1 release and Ant-Man which comes out July 17.
Most of the details surrounding Tomorrowland were kept tightly under wraps for most of its production before the first-ever clips were unveiled in October at NY Comic-Con. Directed by Brad Bird and written by Damon Lindelof, it follows an inventor (Clooney) who teams with a teenage genius (Britt Robertson) to unearth the secrets of a place somewhere in time and space that exists in their collective memory.

Walt Disney Pictures will take advantage by airing a 30-second spot for Tomorrowland, the George Clooney-starring sci-fi mystery adventure that debuts May 22. It makes the most sense for Disney to highlight a Clooney pic — he appeals to both men and women, as does the Super Bowl — and it’s his first starring tentpole role since 2007’s Ocean’s Thirteen. Disney’s Marvel pics coming this summer — The Avengers: Age Of Ultron and Ant-Man — likely won’t need the same boost.
The movies will get plenty of exposure during the broadcast of the NFL’s championship game, set this year in Glendale, AZ. Last year’s game, when the Seahawks decimated the Denver Broncos 43-8, was the most-watched Super Bowl ever according to Nielsen, with an average 112.2M total viewers. Last year, a 30-second Super Bowl spot on Fox went for $4.2 million. They’re even more expensive this year.

Thanks Sevens. I was planning on watching the Super Bowl even tho I'm not cheering for either team really. But now I've got a really good reason to stay close to the TV. Hopefully I won't miss it. There are soooo many commercials during the game. Hope Disney has put together an exciting trailer just for the game.

Yeah, I caught the last maybe 2/3 of it. It looks good for a fantasy adventure. Not my genre, but it seems to have a good story at its core.

Some agonizing minutes after the countdown clock on TakeMeToTomorrowland.com reached zero, the TOMORROWLAND Big Game Special Look was aired and went live online.



Here's a in-depth, shot-by-shot analysis of the spot considering what we have learned from The Optimist ARG, the New York Comic Con footage, the Before Tomorrowland prequel novel, and the Destination D footage:


Casey Newton (Britt Robertson) - presumably in her bedroom - gazes up at a NASA shuttle model hanging above her. Elsewhere in the film, she is seen wearing a red NASA baseball cap, and is said to be seen watching the dismantling of the last launch platform at Cape Canaveral.


















When the spot is watched on TakeMeToTomorrowland.com, the iconic Tomorrowland pin appears at three different points. When clicked, they open one of three panoramas of the futuristic city. (Click the images below to go directly to the panorama and explore in detail.)

These are reminiscent of the Syd Mead concept artwork released at New York Comic Con:



The abundant construction depicted in both the Big Game spot as well as the panoramas indicated Tomorrow has changed quite a bit in the years following Frank's first visit. Is Nix planning for an influx of citizens to Tomorrow?

Underneath the video player on the site, another Nixie-tube countdown clock cycles through countdowns to randomly generated dates, with Plus Ultra society logos flashing between the 9 and 0 digits. Stay tuned for future updates on any potential puzzles or Alternate Reality Game developments.

What Disney's 'Tomorrowland' Movie Is Really About

Of all the trailers aired during last night's Super Bowl, there was one that stood apart, emphasizing the alluring power of mystery over more overtly showy moments. It was a spot that cast a spell over you, inviting you into its strange new world instead of trying to blow you back in your La-Z-Boy with its sheer force of will. It was a spot for "Tomorrowland," a movie that has been shrouded in secrecy up until this point but is now, finally, being teased legitimately. Just know that if you'd rather stay in the dark for what the movie is about, then you should probably skip this piece -- just know that the final product is going to be absolutely spellbinding. We're sure of it.

The Super Bowl spot (and the even-more-mystifying first theatrical teaser), both showcase a young girl named Casey Newton (Britt Robertson from "Under the Dome"), who has a checkered past and who, upon being released from detainment, is gifted with a small, circular pin with a T emblazoned on it. When she touches the pin, she sees glimpses of a futuristic society, featuring glittery towers and men on jet packs. (Again, everything else in this piece hasn't been revealed yet and it's questionable when or how it will be unveiled. In other words; spoiler alert.) Eventually she tracks down a reclusive inventor named Frank Walker (George Clooney), demanding that she escort him to this world that she's seen. He refuses, patently.

In a sequence we saw at New York Comic Con a few months ago, one that showcases the wonderful stylization and dazzling visuals that co-writer/director Brad Bird ("The Incredibles," "Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol") and his amazing team of collaborators have come up with, Casey visits Frank's home to try and get him to agree to take her. But some otherworldly villains also make it to the house, and try to stop both of them. These guys look human but in fact are evil robots. Frank has rigged his home with all sorts of booby traps, and the sequence, as breathlessly paced and wryly inventive as anything Bird has concocted, unfolds with these traps being sprung. For instance, at one point Frank throws a lever, sending electricity to a highly powerful magnet. One of these goons has ahold of Casey, so when the magnet gets thrown, she gets trapped too. It's this wonderful escalation of events, with the suspense getting more and more high wire as the sequence moves along.

Eventually, Clooney's character Frank agrees to take her to this alternate universe, called Tomorrowland (hence that great tag line, "You wanna go?") If the name sounds familiar, that's because Tomorrowland is the futuristic section of Disneyland in California and the Magic Kingdom in Orlando. (In Hong Kong, Tokyo, and eventually Shanghai, it's also called Tomorrowland but in Paris it's called Discoveryland.) Tomorrowland was always Walt's idealized version of what the future could hold and was the basis for a much grander project, something that would wind up being EPCOT. In "Tomorrowland" there are references to both Walt and the parks (footage for the movie was filmed in both domestic theme parks) and one of the ways you get to Tomorrowland was the it's a small world attraction at the 1964 World's Fair in Queens.

The Tomorrowland of the film is designed with Walt's sunny optimism in mind. It's a place where imagination and technology have run wild for the better, in search of exploration and human enlightenment. This is the future that we all saw in comic books and thought would be coming, one with flying cars and jet packs and unlimited possibility. It is the exact opposite of the countless post-apocalyptic science fiction films that have flooded movie screens over the past few years. This is the great big beautiful tomorrow that is shining at the end of every day. But not everything is hunky dory in this utopian world.

Hugh Laurie plays David Nix who was once a confederate of Clooney's Frank (you can see him briefly in the Super Bowl spot) and who now lords over Tomorrowland. Nix thinks that our world is the worst of what humanity has to offer and isn't deserving of the kind of technological advancements and progress. Frank, Casey, and a young character named Athena (Raffey Cassidy) who is actually a [no, I'm not going to spoil it], have to appeal to David Nix and possibly overthrow him, in order to save both of our universes.

That's all that I can talk about for now. A new trailer should be coming soon (my money is on Disney's new live action "Cinderella," a movie that is also excellent by the way), one that should explain the basic premise of "Tomorrowland" in a more accessible way. What's important to remember about the film, and the reason why it has a chance of being one of the very best studio movies of the year, is that it isn't about Tomorrowland the fantasy realm or Tomorrowland the section of your favorite theme park where you get to ride Space Mountain, it's about the Tomorrowland inside all of us, that place of untapped potential, unfettered dreams, and childlike imagination. It's where wishes go to take flight, where the things you only think about are brought to life. This is what makes "Tomorrowland" such a potentially revolutionary exercise in science fiction; in a contemporary world overrun with corporate greed, violent conflict, and everyday despair, it's a film that actively dares you to hope. It's a great big beautiful tomorrow, after all.

Tomorrowland Opens Its Doors With A Fancy New Interactive Website

It’s time to enter the world of tomorrow.

While we’ve only glimpsed the futuristic Emerald City in the brief Tomorrowland footage released thus far, a new interactive website has launched taking us further into this new cinematic space. If The Incredibles director Brad Bird and LOST’s Damon Lindelof weren’t enough to pique your interest in this film, check out these gorgeous new images.

"What if there was a place where you could actually change the world? Would you wanna go?" asks George Clooney in the Tomorrowland trailer that aired during the 2015 Super Bowl. Heck yeah we’d want to go! As seen through three new images of the ultimate destination, this mystical haven looks fantastic. As with anything made from the hands of Disney animators, this new landscape will immediately suck you in, with help from the site itself. Web.TakeMeToTomorrowland.com is an interactive experience that allows you to explore the world by clicking that special pin, the same one we see The Secret Circle star Britt Robertson touch in the various trailers. From there, you can zoom in real close on these images to see the intricate details: an electronic monorail that snakes throughout the city, glowing blue pools of water, creatively sculpted architecture and plenty of hi-tech gadgetry to go around.

Aside from this incredible city and the two leads, Tomorrowland also features the likes of Hugh Laurie, Kathryn Hahn, Tim McGraw and the always lovable Judy Greer. When a young girl beaming with scientific curiosities named Casey (Robertson) has a vision of a wondrous city, she seeks the aide of former boy-genius Frank (Clooney) to find it. Located at some point in space and time, the city of Tomorrowland is place where anything is possible, but the duo’s mission to unlock its many secrets becomes dangerous.

I've seen some footage from New York Comic Con and the action will not disappoint, but the making of this awe-inspiring film is quite interesting. While the film takes its name from the Disneyland theme park attraction, but the contents of the story were inspired by a box filled with the likes of concept art, photos, memos, comic book clippings and more that was found in the basement of Disney’s old animation house. From there, Lindelof and and Bird sought to make a movie from these contents about the future. As they previously described to Entertainment Weekly, "Hogwarts is to magic what Tomorrowland is to science." Based on these new images from the film, we can now see this to be true.

After the new peek we got from the Super Bowl and this new website, we couldn’t be more excited to find out what Tomorrowland is all about.
