Little boy kidnapped and held as a hostage in a bunker for 4 days!

Unbelievable, SWAT team can´t do anything?! Why an earth?

News said the man is Vietnam war veteran- prepared for this. Makes me think arduous, horrendous situation may continue for a long time. He knows all the jungle war tricks by experience…

Hopefully he´ll have a brief sane moment and will release the boy.

akward situation
the man would surely accept to die
he is already in a cage

but then, what about the baby?

and did they understand why right that boy?

I mean
is the man surely going to harm him, plus the obvious frightening time?

Well I don´t know the details just what I heard from the news.
What I find hard to understand is why they are unable to do anything to get that boy out of there. I mean it has been days.

I guess they can´t use gas, because it affects the child most. Very sad indeed.

Story from CNN:

http://edition.cnn.com/2013/02/01/us/alabama-child-hostage/index.html?iref=allsearch

Midland City, Alabama (CNN) -- Kelly Miller heard the gunshots, then the screams from the school bus.

She could hear her children screaming: "He's got a gun. He took a kid."

Outside, a gunman had just boarded a school bus, killed the driver and grabbed two children, according to authorities. One of the children escaped. The other, a 5-year-old boy, was not so lucky.

The suspect then disappeared with the boy into a nearby well-stocked, underground bunker.

Shaken community

By now, everybody in the small southeastern Alabama town of Midland City knows what happened.

The story has been recounted at the grocery store and at the gas stations, where people trade the latest details about the hostage standoff that entered its fourth day Friday.

It has thrust this town of about 2,300 into the national spotlight, with nightly reports recounting the hostage drama that has shaken this community known for its close vicinity to the "Peanut Capital of the World."

On Tuesday afternoon, bus driver Charles Poland Jr. was shuttling children from school to their homes when he dropped Miller's two boys off and a man boarded the bus.

He demanded that Poland, 66, hand over a child. Poland refused, blocking access to the bus's narrow aisle as at least 21 children escaped out of the back emergency door, according to police.

It's unclear whether the suspected gunman was after a specific child on the bus. Police have said there is no connection between the suspect and the abducted boy, whose identity is being withheld.

Police are tight-lipped about a possible motive, and have refused to divulge what, if any, demands the suspect has made to hostage negotiators.

The suspect is holed up in a bunker 4 feet underground and built at least partially out of PVC pipe, authorities have said.

An FBI hostage negotiator was communicating with the alleged gunman through a plastic ventilation pipe in an effort to end the standoff.

"They're taking time and trying to wear him out," said Police Chief James Arrington of Pinckard, who is familiar with details of the case.

Authorities have not released the name of the suspected gunman.

But neighbors and news outlets around Midland City have identified him as Jimmy Lee Dykes, 65,a Vietnam veteran and retired truck driver, who moved to the area about five years ago.

'Take this'

By all accounts, Poland knew the alleged gunman, at least in passing.

On Monday, the day before the shooting and abduction, Dykes flagged down Poland while he was driving the bus to talk to him, according to Miller, who lives near the suspected gunman.

While Miller did not know the nature of the conversation between the two men, she told CNN affiliate WSFA-TV that Tuesday morning, Poland offered the suspect a gift of eggs and marmalade as a thank you for clearing his driveway so the bus could turn around easier.

Hours later, Dykes handed over the eggs and marmalade to Miller's father. "He said, 'Take this, I don't want it,'" she said.

So when Dykes got on the bus Tuesday afternoon, it didn't seem unusual to her sons, Jesse and Jackson, she said.

Neighbors have described Dykes as "anti-government" and abusive, with several describing run-ins, including one where they claimed he pulled a gun.

Tim Byrd, chief investigator with the Dale County Sheriff's Office, told the Southern Poverty Law Center's Hatewatch that Dykes was a "survivalist type" with "anti-America" views.

"His friends and his neighbors stated that he did not trust the government, that he was a Vietnam vet, and that he had PTSD," Byrd told the civil rights group. "He was standoffish, didn't socialize or have any contact with anybody."

Still, Miller said she can't reconcile the man she knows as her neighbor with the one accused of killing a bus driver and abducting a boy.

"I really in my heart don't believe that he intends to hurt that little boy," she said. "I think that he may have something to say and he wants people to hear him. I'm not sure what that is. But I don't think he intends to hurt that little boy."

'That's a hero'

Even as authorities search for answers behind the killing and kidnapping, there is no question to Midland City residents that the bus driver was a hero.

Poland was a gentle Bible-reading man who could not stand to discipline the children on his bus because it hurt his heart, the Dothan Eagle newspaper reported.

He had worked as a full-time bus driver for four years, shuttling children between their homes and schools.

"There was a laughter and a love that he had for the kids," his brother-in-law Melven Skipper told CNN affiliate WDHM, reflecting on the regular conversations he'd have about "my youngins'."

"They were his youngins', when he had them on the bus."

Poland will be memorialized Saturday night at a visitation service, followed by his funeral Sunday afternoon at the Ozark Civic Center.

"You couldn't give nothing greater than your life for a kid or anyone else," Skipper said.

"That's a hero."

CNN's George Howell reported from Midland City and Chelsea J. Carter wrote from Atlanta. CNN's Greg Botelho and Tristan Smith contributed to this report.

Here's a jumbled reading test. It's sort of like speed reading. They say if you can read the words then your mind is sharp. But let me say I'm not the sharpest acorn on the tree but I can read it. LOL
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
Wow! I've seen this with the letters out of order, but this is the first time I've seen it with numbers.

Good example of a Brain Study: If you can read this OUT LOUD you have a strong mind. And better than that: Alzheimer?s is a long, long, ways down the road before it ever gets anywhere near you.

Even if you are not old, you will find this interesting...
This is NOT a joke. If you were able to pass these tests, you can cancel your annual visit to your neurologist. Your brain is great and you're far from having a close relationship with Alzheimer's..

Oh you not an idiot !

The structure was changed but we didn't know how to change the title from change one letter....sorry for the confusion !

It's now an imaginative association to the previous word...
Eg...somewhere ....rainbow.....tornado.....Texas....
From memory anyway....my last one after after dust is television...
cos when someone says "what's on TV" the answer can be
a jokey reply of "dust" !

I think Mel can explain better than me lol!

http://news.ninemsn.com.au/world/2013/02/07/08/27/school-drills-mock-massacre

Theminis: Not convinced 100% that this is a good idea. I feel its a sad day indeed when drills such as this are necessary....

Authorities wanted this mock school massacre to feel as realistic as possible.

----------------------------------------------------------------------
Two fake shooters in dark sunglasses begin stalking students on a crowded campus, setting off a chaotic scene of screaming children running for cover amid cracks of gunfire and bomb smoke.

Some student actors, covered in blood-red paint, were heard crying for help as others, as young as 12, locked themselves inside barricaded classrooms.

The shooters were even seen picking their way through the bodies of students playing dead, nudging some with the end of their boot to see if they needed finishing off.

"I felt really terrified," Kianna Whitten, one of 20 teenage actors who took part in the exercise, told NBC. "I've never felt that scared."

Patrol cars, SWAT vehicles and ambulances eventually swarmed onto the campus to rescue the students, as a videographer captured all the action on camera.

The simulated massacre was played out at a school in the northern Californian town of Modesto on Sunday, so authorities can better prepare for such emergencies in the future.

The training video that will be produced from the exercise is to be distributed next year to school administrators and law enforcement agencies throughout California, authorities said.

"We need to actually know how our guys at the Sheriff's Office are going to respond to an actual emergency and the best way to do that is through live simulated training, making it as real as we can," Sergeant Anthony Bejaran from Stanislaus County Sheriff's Office said.

Sunday's exercise was designed in the aftermath of the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting in Connecticut two months ago, in which a gunman fatally shot 20 children and six adult staff members.

Yes, exactly, that worries me. And although teenagers took part in this mock drill, are they any better prepared mentally/emotionally etc than younger children?. Not sure. Id love to see that aura of innocence surround all our little ones a little longer. Knowledge is good, but too much at the wrong time can be damaging.

On a happier note, I have a friend who has been working/playing in Europe for years now. Every now and then she sends little notes about some town she has stayed in. Her travels have improved my geography knowledge!.

Latest town is Begijnendijk, Belgium. Didn't stay long but enjoyed passing through. My friend has been all over Italy, Germany, France, and investigated everything near the Town she is based in at the moment. So envious of her passport right now....

Sun is shining and it's a beautiful sight. More so because I'm watching it from inside my home. My car is buried but that's OK because I'm not going anywhere. My neighbor's boys are outside working very hard to build a snow fort and it looks awesome. Lots of snowstorm pictures from NJ and NY - one I liked was a snow woman wearing a black bikini. Clever!!!

Thanks Jo - warm and snug in my little corner of the world. I was supposed to go to New York tomorrow with my family to see The Lion King on broadway. I don't think that'll happen. Transit service is really messed up with this storm.

Am I the only one sitting here wondering how you get a bikini on a snowman?

Hi Katie - it was a snow woman, boobs and everything. Very artistic, probably made by some young and horny guy in New Jersey. The picture got a lot of laughs from the newscasters.

Lol....you have lived a sheltered life haven't you ?
Sorry....couldn't resist !

You build the "snow person" around the clothing bit by bit.

Had about a foot of snow, but drifts are about 2 ft. Looked really pretty early this morning but everybody messed it up with their shovels.
We had a kind of miracle in my neck of the woods. They actually started plowing about 8 last evening and plowed through our street every 2 hrs. or so, all night long. Never in the 54 yrs. I've lived in this house, has our street been cleaned so well, so soon.
