George Clooney Auctioning Lunch Date to Benefit Gay, Lesbian & Straight Education Network

The two highest bidders will join the actor-philanthropist at the Soho House in West Hollywood.

If you love George Clooney, and you've got deep pockets too, then the actor-philanthropist's latest charitable effort might be right up your alley: Clooney is auctioning off the opportunity for two fans to join himself and entertainment writer Dave Karger for an intimate lunch at the Soho House in West Hollywood.

The lunch experience, valued at $20,000, is up for bid through Oct. 11 on the auction site Charitybuzz and will benefit GLSEN, the Gay, Lesbian & Straight Education Network, which works to ensure safe schools for students.

Clooney, who recently sold his Tesla Roadster at an auction benefitting Sudan, will receive the Brass Ring for his philanthropy at the Carousel of Hope gala in Los Angeles next month.
Also in October, GLSEN will honor DreamWorks Animation co-founder and CEO Jeffrey Katzenberg and his wife, Marilyn, with its Lifetime Achievement Award at the group's eighth annual Respect Awards at the Beverly Hills Hotel. White Collar star Matt Bomer and his partner, Slate PR's Simon Halls, will be honored by GLSEN with its Inspiration Award.

Attention, anyone who has $20,000 earmarked for “lunch with a celebrity”: George Clooney is auctioning off a Los Angeles–area lunch date to benefit GLSEN, the Gay, Lesbian & Straight Education Network, an organization that works to make schools safe for LGBT youth. The “intimate” date comes with a number of stipulations, however, including that the get-together may take up to a year to schedule, it may be procured only by someone over 18, and Clooney and the winning bidder must be accompanied by a (probably very nice) third wheel, entertainment journalist and “official red carpet greeter at the Oscars” Dave Karger.

As far as A-list auctioned meals go, the date’s estimated price—$20,000—appears to be market value. A recent dinner with Charlize Theron cost someone a reported $20,000, and the shame of being called “creepy” when the Oscar winner recounted the evening on national television. In 2001, Rolling Stones guitarist Ronnie Wood and Hong Kong businessman David Tang paid a reported $41,000 for a three-way date with Scarlett Johansson benefitting the U.K. charity Breakthrough Breast Cancer.

Amazingly, according to Charity Buzz, the Web site where the Clooney date is being auctioned off, $20,000 would also get bidders four lunches with Jeremy Piven, 20 personalized voicemail recordings from Ben Affleck, and 40 pairs of V.I.P. tickets to the Ricky Lake Show.

If you read the write up of the lunch it won't necessarily be right away...it will be scheduled within the next year. The auction closes in October....but the meet up is in the future.

GEORGE CLOONEY is auctioning off a lunch date with himself to raise money for America's Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network (GLSEN).

The Hollywood hunk will entertain the lucky winner and a friend in an intimate lunch with entertainment writer David Karger at Soho House in West Hollywood.

The dinner date with the Ocean's Eleven star has been valued at £12,500 [about $17,000] and will be up for auction until 11 October (12) on the CharityBuzz website.

The actor has long been a vocal supporter of the gay community and supports GLSEN, which works to ensure safe and supportive schooling environments for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender youth.

Not for anything, as much as I like him I would not spend that much to meet anyone. I can think of much better things to do with that kind of money. My typical donation is $1 - $10....which is all I can afford. Sorry to sound bitter...he may be great and very cute but again not sure I could justify spending that kind of money.

I know the money is for charity but really that much just to have lunch with someone...I can't see it. It is sad to me that someone can't just give that kind of money to a good cause but only so they can meet someone....not explaining well. Too much wine with dinner

To me it doesn't matter one jot what the "prize" is in these type of auctions.....as long as the designated charity gets a shed load
of money.
Fund raisers will stop at nothing to get the money flowing in.
And quite rightly in my opinion.

It's a method of getting money to a charity. Obviously it's not aimed at what I'd call normal people (in terms of income). I don't think there's anyone posting here who has a spare 30 grand or more to give to charity but there are rich people who do.
