Oscar nominations due to be announced

The nominations for this year's Oscars are set to be unveiled, with George Clooney and Meryl Streep likely to lead the charge in the best actor and best actress categories. Silent film The Artist and family drama The Descendants are expected among the frontrunners for best picture.

The 84th Academy Awards take place on Sunday 26 February at the Kodak Theatre, Hollywood. This year's host is comic actor Billy Crystal. Clooney and Streep are among the acting favourites for their respective roles in The Descendants and Margaret Thatcher biopic The Iron Lady.

French film The Artist - about Hollywood's transition from silent movies to "talkies" - has taken the lion's share of top prizes throughout awards season, most recently at Saturday's Producers Guild of America ceremony.

It took home a trio of honours from the Golden Globes last week, and leads this year's Baftas with 12 nominations, including best film and best director. Other films predicted to appear in the best film category are Hugo, Martin Scorsese's love letter to the early days of cinema, civil rights drama The Help and Woody Allen's Midnight in Paris. Owing to a change in Oscar voting system, the best picture category could consist of between five and 10 nominees.

Oscars organisers have also announced a crackdown on social events aimed at wooing voters ahead of the big night. New rules ban members from attending parties organised by film companies after the nominations are announced. Voters will still be allowed go to screenings attended by actors. Academy president Tom Sherak said last year the rules helped in "protecting the integrity of the awards process".

Billy Crystal will present this year's Academy Awards after the departure of Eddie Murphy, the original host. The 63-year-old actor has previously hosted the Oscars eight times, most recently in 2004. Last year, British film The King's Speech was crowned best picture, with star Colin Firth named best actor. Tom Hooper was named best director for the film, which also won for best original screenplay.

shocked that Bridesmaids keeps getting nominations. It wasn't funny in the slightest and really did nothing for women in comedy.

Leonardo Dicaprio, Michael Fassbender Snubbed In Oscar Nominations

Leonardo Dicaprio and Michael Fassbender have discovered that there's no room for them on the nominations list at this year's Academy Awards as the yearly event threw up its usual array of surprise candidates and high profile snubs ahead of the final ceremony in Hollywood on February 26th 2012.

Whilst the awards season so far as largely been predictable, with The Artist, Hugo, Meryl Streep and George Clooney among the films and names dominating the nominations and awards over the past few weeks, you might've predicted that the biggest show of them all would tip the balance a little - something it's duly done. DiCaprio and Fassbender may have a right to feel aggrieved at their absence from the category of Best Leading Actor, with the former earning nominations at both the Golden Globes and Screen Actors Guild Awards for his performance in 'J. Edgar' whilst the latter impressed in 'Shame,' gaining notable acclaim during last Autumn's film festival season and also gaining Globe and Screen Actors nominations.

As it was 'Shame' was snubbed entirely from the main honours, with legendary director Steven Spielberg also finding himself overlooked despite the positive reception to his film 'War Horse.' So who was in? Well, as expected 'Hugo' and 'The Artist' both featured heavily, though there was even a surprise here as 'Hugo' was nominated for 11 gongs of is rivals 10 - and the strongly tipped 'The Descendants' even further back on a paltry five, behind the Brad Pitt starring 'Moneyball.'

Congratulations to George! I'm sure he's disappointed no best director nod this year but he still has a lot of good films in him. It's not so common to get best director without a best film and I just don't think Ides was up to it.

Year of the Hunk: How George Clooney, Brad Pitt Could Save the Oscars

12/1/2011 by Gregg Kilday

Ratings gold? The Academy may be looking at the best-looking field of best actors in history.

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

At 84, Oscar may no longer be a stud, but he still hangs out with a pretty studly crew. At least that could be the case this year if, as the bloggerati are predicting, a particularly handsome lineup of leading men is nominated for best actor. And that, in turn, could help the Oscar broadcast's efforts to fend off further ratings decline.

The contest is fluid -- nominations won't be announced until Jan. 24 -- but the consensus has George Clooney, for his beleaguered dad in The Descendants, and Leonardo DiCaprio, for his embittered FBI director in J. Edgar, at the top of the list. Brad Pitt is a strong contender for the casual ease with which he steps into the shoes of baseball GM Billy Beane in Moneyball. And a couple of relative newcomers have become early favorites: Germany-born, London-based Michael Fassbender, who fearlessly lets it all hang out in the NC-17 Shame, and French matinee idol Jean Dujardin, who pours on the charm as a fading star in the silent movie The Artist.

It's a lineup straight out of the GQ Men of the Year Awards by way of People's Sexiest Man Alive cover -- Clooney and Pitt are two-time titleholders. (There's even an outside chance fellow SMA Matt Damon could join them for We Bought a Zoo.) It's not a typical Academy roundup if only because the Oscars tend to underrate the work of a lot of the best-looking leading men. Big-screen smoothies, they can make it look too easy; they often appear in action films or romantic comedies that aren't considered awards-worthy and steer clear of the showy transformations the Academy favors. That's one reason DiCaprio, who was ignored for his clean-cut earnestness in Titanic, is now being applauded for donning all that aging makeup in J. Edgar. It's all the more impressive that Clooney and Pitt are being taken seriously this year because neither adopts a thick accent or funny mustache to play his part.

Now all of that would just be something for fan sites to gush over if it also didn't have ratings implications.

The Academy might have breathed a sigh of relief when Billy Crystal agreed to emcee the show in the wake of Eddie Murphy's departure. But Crystal, who hasn't hosted since 2004, is 63, making him the second-oldest solo host since a 74-year-old Bob Hope fronted the show in 1978. And that's not going to make the young girls swoon.

There's also a question of how widespread the appeal of the movies nominated for best picture will be when the show is broadcast Feb. 26. When noms were announced last awards season, there were two mega-grossers: Toy Story 3 ($415 million domestic) and Inception ($293 million). But this year, with only five nominees guaranteed, it's an open question whether 2011's top-grossing movie, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2, will make the cut. The closest thing to a popular nominee right now is the all-girl The Help, which has collected $168 million domestically.

But if the best-picture nominees are short on crowd-pleasers, a posse of hot actors could provide ratings insurance. Certainly, it would help the surrounding media industry that feeds into the Oscars. "It's an exciting possibility that George Clooney, Brad Pitt and Matt Damon, the men from the Ocean's movies, could all be on the red carpet together competing for best actor," says Entertainment Tonight executive producer Linda Bell Blue. "And they all play strong men with backbone, which is what female moviegoers are looking for."

GOLDEN BOYS: Dishy leading men have to wait to get the gold
•Cary Grant: Two nominations before his Honorary Oscar in 1970
•Paul Newman: 10 noms, a win for The Color of Money, an Honorary in 1986
•Robert Redford: 1 acting nom, 1 directing win, then an Honorary in 2002
•Warren Beatty: 4 acting noms, 1 directing win, then the Thalberg in 2000

George is always the exception at least for us. Yeah great news to wake up too. No doubt he is a little disappointed his directing didn't get a nom but best actor is great. The Descendents has done well. The Bridesmaids thing seems more a joke sorry I just don't think it should be in the category. No doubt Octavia will win and probably Meryl Streep!

It may be George's year for the best actor Oscar.
I think George still has some growing to do as a director but one day his name can be up there. He should feel honored to be considered. The competition this year for best director is pretty tough.
I'm going with The Descendants for best adapted screenplay.

He was nominated once for Best Director for Good Night and Good Luck. I am disappointed that Ides didn't do better for awards but I'm very glad that he's got the best actor nom. In my very biased opinion I think he deserves to win this year. cheers

MM ! Very Happy

it was several years ago. it was about a teenage girl and her family at the dinner table. The girl is going on and on about her women's rights group at school and the whole time her mom is serving everybody dinner, getting up and getting everything for everybody, she just sits down to eat and then the teenage girl notices at the end! It WON!

I have written a lot of poetry and songs.written short stories, took two creative writing classes recently ( past 2 years ) finished a children's novel , not published yet, and finished a horror screenplay.

two weeks ago I started my next screenplay but this one needs research and I just gotten done with characters. it's a supernatural romance , obviously can't tell you the plot, someone may steal it. Rolling Eyes

Here is a video from Newsweeks Magazines Oscar Roundtable Discussion that will be out soon. Video of George, Viola, Charlize, Michael, and Tilda talking. Interesting and fun, but they only give us a taste of the discussion.

I think it's his year for best actor I don't think Moneyball is strong enough for Brad to win and so far George has been getting the awards. In time he can work towards a directing Oscar it took him years to get the acting one and all good things take time. I am surprised Ides has been so ignored maybe cause it was a political film.

Congratulations for your nominations George! Blessings too... Smile

Did watch a few video clips of "The Artist"... and did think that it was a rich feast of sorts, for the artists+arts world... Incredibly awesome for our "today times" I see Smile Perhaps it will help if you put things in perspective... and just "allowed" for what is meant TO BE... and also kind of be prepared in case "The Artist" wins where you have been nominated as well... No, not discouraging you or being "hope"less for a miracle... but just so you don't waste your time+talents on "campaigning any further"... instead may be... it might help for you to go out there yet again.. and make what you do best... more of your art, refreshed, renewed, into a different project perhaps... Smile

MOST times the BEST VOICE to listen to... will be your own... in the silence of your inner self, and in the divine light+presence of your Creator... Try to SHUT OUT those ones that the world is telling / piping / goading / pushing / cajoling you to do right now (including mine aha!! Very Happy)... and do what your strongest, clearest, truest feeling is asking you to do, from inside of you...

As always... wishing you THE BESTEST,
Love to all of you as well, dear people Smile
Peace,

UGGIE !

'The Artist's' Uggie to retire at 10; that's 50-plus in dog years

January 26, 2012 | 10:20 am

Uggie the dog, the faithful on-screen companion of Jean Dujardin in the silent-movie "The Artist," is set to hang up his collar and retire. Which means that next month's Academy Awards will probably be the last public appearance by one of the year's biggest movie stars.

Uggie's trainer, Omar Von Muller, told Life & Style magazine,
"He may do a couple of little things here and there because he enjoys them, but I don't want to put him through long hours anymore. He's getting tired."

Last year was the biggest of Uggie's on-screen career, with high-profile roles in "Water for Elephants" and the Oscar-nominated "The Artist."
When the "The Artist" premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in May, Uggie was awarded the Palm Dog (a play on the Palm d'Or) for best performance by a canine in a film at the fest.
However, despite calls for a special Oscar category to be created for Uggie, the academy hasn't been as open to honoring animal performances.

PHOTOS: Which movie dog deserves Oscar treat?

Besides the Oscars, Uggie has one more big outing in February, and that's to the Golden Collar Awards, where he's a double nominee as best dog in a theatrical film for "The Artist" and "Water for Elephants."

Uggie, who is 10 (that's his mid-50s in dog years), is poised to lead a relaxing life in retirement, but he's not leaving the Hollywood community in the lurch.
Uggie's trainer has the dog's brother, Dash, ready to go. According to Von Muller, Dash has already been working as Uggie's stand-in and should do just fine.

Moviegoers shouldn't worry -- this isn't like Dennis Quaid retiring and Randy Quaid taking his roles.

And for one more Uggie fix, watch our video from the Golden Globes red carpet below:
