Amal to Speak on Sunday, 11-13-16

OMG!  I can't believe I'M posting this and not someone else????  I ASSume she is there, or heading there.

And then she's heading to Texas on the 15th.  Busy, busy!

On Nov. 13, lawyer and activist Amal Clooney will Bryan Series about her high-profile career as a human rights attorney.
“Her commitments to human rights and social justice causes were a match for Guilford’s commitments,” said Ty Buckner, associate vice president for the Bryan Series and advancement communications. “We were looking for someone who can speak to those issues on a more global scale, and she certainly can do that.”

Clooney’s career has taken her all over the world, where she has helped many people who have had their human rights violated . The University of Oxford and New York University graduate advises different governments as well as the United Nations on their responsibilities under international law.
Faculty and staff are excited about her upcoming Bryan Series appearance.

“I think attending Amal Clooney’s presentation will give students a … first-hand account of her experiences of being a human rights attorney,” said Hope. “Students will be able to ask her questions about specific cases that she has done, and to hear her talk about her experiences will be powerful.”
“Standing for human rights stands for promoting integrity and respect, which are guiding principles of Guilford College. Specifically, the preservation of humans rights preserves the dignity and quality of life of humans on Earth, and these two are goals that we seek to promote in what we teach here.”

Sophomore Mia Kulshreshtha is interested to hear about what Clooney has experienced throughout her career.
“I am looking forward to hearing about her experiences that she has had while working in the United Nations,” said Kulshreshtha. “I think it is important for people our age to understand the importance of human rights.
“I believe Amal Clooney is a great example of what a human rights activist, as well as lawyer, looks like and I am excited to hear what she has to share with us.”

Melissa Fourrier, junior and member of the Amnesty International Club, hopes students will consider attending the event.
“There’s so much we can learn from her expertise and wisdom in representing human rights defense,” said Fourrier. “We live in a day where people are afraid to speak truth. Afraid their reputations will be damaged, their interests will be insulted (and) their political agendas will not move forward.
“Amal is not one of those people. She is firm in her knowledge that all people are entitled to be treated with dignity and that all nations should uphold the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.”

Clooney will be speaking at the Greensboro Coliseum on Nov. 13, 3:30 p.m.-5:30 p.m. There will also be a Q&A session at 1:30 p.m. the day of the event. Students and faculty can obtain free tickets to the talk through an online form, which will be sent through the Guilford Buzz.

The arena she's speaking in is HUGE!!

I'm sure George and others will be there to give her lots of support.

Besides, in case you hadn't noticed, HE'S WORKING! He does have other things to do besides follow her around like a puppy. And his work is just as important as hers.

And it goes without saying that he would regard it as a distraction if he was there. Doesn't mean to say he's not in a hotel nearby, but remember she did lectures at Chapel Hill years ago so she knows the place well

PAN - you usually provide us with great pictures, that's the ONLY reason I made the comment.

It sounds like a pretty big event, I just thought George would be there to support her; I have seen him with Amal in a work environment.  Now that you mention it, I can see how his celebrity could be a distraction.

Annemarie let me know he does not attend Amal's speaking engagements.  Annemarie obviously keeps up with the whereabouts of George more than I do.

I honestly don't know how the pap works.  I've seen Amal pictured with and without George Clooney.  George could be at a nearby hotel or Cucamonga for all I know.  I'm sure wherever George is, he has the love of his life in his thoughts.

I have to say I know very little about Amal's work history, other than what's posted here I know very little about Amal.

Thanks carolhathaway for the link to the pics.  If you go to Amal Clooney's style site there are pics and some comments posted as to what she discussed.

Thanks Donna, I had no idea what she was speaking about.  I hope she mentioned the United Nations included the "crime" of genocide and the Ideology of ISIS criminal in their final report.

PP - For starters, ignoring a career that brings entertainment and pleasure to millions of people - especially at a time like this when we need all the distractions we can get - George is, and has been very active as a humanitarian. I'd venture to suggest his humanitarian work has had more of an impact on more people than all her "human rights" lawyering.

So, yes, his career is just as important as hers, IMO.

No doubt that they both do important and meaningful work.  There certainly seems to be a mutual respect that they have for each other in regards to their careers.  Amal seems very supportive of George's film career.   At least it looks that way to me.

I agree Donnamarie they do both seem very supportive of each others work. I think they are both proud of each other and that is a good thing.
