Donnamarie wrote:'The Intouchables' was a wonderful movie with terrific performances by the two leading men. Can't remember the actors' names.
I can't imagine Kevin Hart in the role of the caregiver!
There is nothing nuanced about Kevin Hart and he lacks the physicality and I think the charm of the original actor.
Why mess with the original? In fact, the original came out only a few years ago ... 2011 or 2012 I think?
Donnamarie I like the way you think.

Donnamarie , they keep remaking these movies because the want the money. And seem to think that putting actors who are hot right now will make the remake a hit. It is just dumb leave them alone and come up with good scripts.

Agree annemarie. There's an article in the Washington Post this morning written by one of their film critics. It speaks to what we've been talking about. I will try to post it here later.
Ladybugcngc and Annemarie, did you see 'The Intouchables'?

No, I don't recall a movie called "The Intouchables"; however the thought sounds wonderful. A movie about people in touch with real life.

It's a French movie with subtitles. A very well done and uplifting story.
Here's an article from today's Washington Post that is relevant to what we've been talking about.

I never saw the movie but I do remember watching the the t.v. show with Robert Stack as Elliott Ness. if this is the same movie we are talking about.
I can't remember the year but I think it was on in reruns in the late 70's or early 80's.

Donna,
are you talking about this movie?
[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
I saw it a few times and think it's just breathtaking!
If you ever get the chance, don't hesitate to read the book, it's even better:

I think in the States you prefer to do remakes of movies in other languages rather than synchronizing them. I don't always think that that's the better decision...
Have you ever seen 'The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo'?
It's the 2011 remake of a Swedish movie
[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
from 2009 which in my opinion is much better than the remake...

Re: Exclusive: All-Female ‘Ocean’s Eleven’ In The Works Starring Sandra Bullock, With Gary Ross Directing
Carolhathaway - I don't know why, but for some reason foreign films are either subtitled or remade for showing here. I don't recall any foreign film that was synchronized, although there may have been a few. They usually don't get wide distribution, and end up in art houses where they're seen by a fairly small audience. We miss out on a lot of very good movies.
That said, I did see both versions of "The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo", and I agree. The original was much better.

Thanks carolh for the links. I've only seen the remake of 'The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo' which I thought was pretty good. I'll have to check out the original since you and Lizzy preferred it to the remake. Some late summer movie watching ...
Way2, I'll check Amazon to see if they have the dubbed version of 'The Intouchables'. Now I want to watch again!
I'm not sure I've ever seen a "synchronized" version of a foreign film

Re: Exclusive: All-Female ‘Ocean’s Eleven’ In The Works Starring Sandra Bullock, With Gary Ross Directing
In Germany usually all foreign movies are synchronized, you can hardly see any in original languages. So I had never heard George's original voice before I bought DVDs where you can often choose between various languages. Somebody here said that in Sweden movies aren't usually synchronized but subtitled, and my husband said the same about the Netherlands. I remember one funny thing: When I was about 16, I spent four weeks with my 'British mum' in our twin town, so after a few days I started thinking and dreaming in English. One night I watched a film on TV with my host family, and it wasn't in English but subtitled. I concentrated on the story and the subtitles, until - after about 30 minutes - realized that it was a German film in German . I had shutted out German and just didn't notice that I didn't need the subtitles...

Lizzy,
yes, EVERYBODY realized it because their son asked me: "Isn't that movie in German?" and that was when I first started really listening...
Last year, when I took my family to our twin town, we visited my 'British mom' with our hosts and some others, and her son Nick was there as well and told everybody about that

I really hope this time the plot actually works! Soderbergh himself said he doesn't know how the money got out of the casino in Ocean's 11. And I'm still trying to figure out, (after seeing the movie at least a dozen times!), how Danny Ocean got back in the room with Bruiser after the robbery.
All theories will be gratefully accepted.

Damian Lewis is the villain for Ocean's Eight
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
The cast for Ocean's Eight announced so far as been exclusively full of some great female performers including Sandra Bullock, Cate Blanchett and Anne Hathaway. Now we know that Damian Lewis will bring his particular talents to the film, playing the target of the robbery.
He'll actually be Bullock's former lover who is the subject of a little revenge plan – so we're going to go ahead and assume he's not exactly the nicest guy in the world. According to Variety, he's been spotted on the set and is in a main role, not just a cameo, as with Matt Damon, who is reportedly briefly bringing his Ocean's Eleven character Linus Caldwell to the spin-off.
Eight's cast also includes Helena Bonham Carter, Rihanna, Sarah Paulson and Mindy Kaling, with Gary Ross calling the shots from the script he wrote alongside Olivia Milch.
American audiences will see the movie on 8 June, 2018, but there's no UK date on the books yet. Lewis will be back for the second season of financial drama series Billions, which should return to TV screens in February.

Re: Exclusive: All-Female ‘Ocean’s Eleven’ In The Works Starring Sandra Bullock, With Gary Ross Directing
Thanks, Way2Old. Every time I see something else about this film I get more uneasy about it. I'm glad George isn't in it.
By the way, saw Ocean's 11 again and still can't figure out how Danny got back in that room (never mind the whole fake/real robbery crap!). I'm almost ready to offer a reward to anyone who actually figured it out. (Almost ready - I'm on a tight budget at the moment, what with the holidays and all.) All theories gratefully accepted.

Lizzy, don't they have to put notices up around the place before they film?
I know that they've been somewhere around 78th and then 71st before - but since it's about the Met I guess that's not really surprising.......

PAN - When they're filming in the city it usually involves closing off the street/s where they're filming to all traffic and often pedestrians, too, so they do have to post signs letting the area residents know when they'll be filming. They probably have to post copies of their permits, too.
