It's had all the drama of one of his signature Hollywood blockbusters.

And George Clooney ensured that his four-day Venetian wedding had the happiest of endings today as his marriage to British barrister Amal Alamuddin was finally made official in a 10-minute, €600 civil ceremony in the Italian city.

As the credits began to roll on proceedings, which had started on Friday afternoon, there was still time for one last scene to play out as the 53-year-old actor and his new wife arrived at Venice City Hall to complete formalities and sign the wedding register in front of witnesses.

Once again, the pair made a show-stopping entrance after sweeping down the Grande Canal and making their way to the historic Ca' Loredan building which houses the city hall.

Amal dazzled in yet another fashionable ensemble, wide-legged Stella McCartney cream trousers with a matching top and hat.

She also carried a clutch by the same designer.

Although Mr Clooney’s spokesman in Los Angeles had declared that the couple had married on Saturday night, to make the union legal under Italian law they were still required to to turn up for a civil ceremony.

They paid the €600/ £470 600 fee charged by the Municipality of Venice to non-Italians who want to wed in the city, and proceedings were conducted in the glitzy Sala degli Stucchi reception room.

The city's council had closed of the streets around the 13th century city hall building, bringing a small part of the area near to the famous Rialto Bridge to a virtual standstill as the newlyweds arrived at the venue in a chauffeur-driven taxi boat flanked by police boats.

The couple's arrival took place just as angry council workers were staging an angry protest outside the neighbouring Ca' Farsetti building over budget and salary cuts.

Council employees, who earn on average 2,500 euros a month, are about to have their salaries cut by 500 euros.

The move comes after the mayor of Venice was forced to resign as a result of a multi-million pound corruption scandal earlier this year.

Protesters had been hoping that Mr Clooney, who has been outspoken on issues such as the war and famine in Darfur, may help publicise their grievances.

Council workers have even sent an open letter to Mr Clooney, addressing him as 'Caro (dear) George', and explaining that while they were happy that he had chosen Venice for his wedding, he should know that unemployment was on the rise and families were struggling to make ends meet.

Under the gaze of the world's media, the small group of gathered protesters whistled and chanted and held up placards as officials began turning up ahead of Mr Clooney's and Ms Alamuddin's arrival.

Their protests however were mostly drowned out by crowds of tourists who had arrived at the city hall to congratulate and cheer on the newlyweds.

However, Mr Clooney appeared to acknowledge the protesters as he stopped and briefly applauded those holding placards before heading inside.

The couple tied the knot beneath an arch made of white roses, during a ceremony presided over by Walter Veltroni, a former mayor of Rome whom Mr Clooney befriended through his humanitarian work.

It's believed US Vogue has secured the rights to the wedding pictures and the couple will be donating the fee they receive to a charity of their choice. The pair reportedly banned guests from bringing mobile phones in a bid to prevent unauthorised pictures being leaked from the event.

The civil ceremony came two days after the Hollywood star and human rights barrister Ms Alamuddin, 36, exchanged vows in a celebrity-packed wedding at the seven-star Aman Hotel.

TMZ also claims the Gravity actor devised a cunning plan which enabled punters to take photos, which he could monitor. According to the website, guests were given a specially made camera and code.

All images that were taken on the approved cameras were routed to a database that George's people could access, therefore if any photos were then touted to the media, George would immediately be able to track down the perpetrator.

On Monday morning, the couple's celebrity friends who had spent the weekend celebrating their wedding, began leaving Venice.

Supermodel Cindy Crawford and her husband Randy Gerber, who acted as Mr Clooney's best man, were among the first to arrive at the city's Marco Polo airport. They were followed by actor Matt Damon and his wife Luciana.

Following his father-in-law’s speech, messages from a few of George's pals, including Dan Aykroyd and Sandra Bullock, who sadly couldn't make it to his big day, were then read aloud, putting a smile on the actor’s face.

According to the magazine, the wedding celebrations went on until the early hours of Sunday morning, with some not retiring to their beds until 5am.

It will no doubt come as a surprise to some that George had the energy to party so hard as he'd had a late night the evening before celebrating his last hours as a single man.

George Clooney and Amal Alamuddin are legally married.

The couple - who tied the knot in Venice, Italy on Saturday (27.09.14) - underwent a civil ceremony at Palazzo Ca'Loredan, an official council building in the city, earlier today in accordance with Italian laws.

The ceremony was officiated by the 'Monuments Men' star's friend, former Rome Mayor Walter Viltroni, who also presided over the wedding on Saturday.

George wore a grey suit for the service, while Amal, 36, donned a simple cream trouser suit and floppy hat and the pair - who travelled to the venue in the same Amore boat they have used all weekend - exchanged their vows in the stunningly-decorated Sala Degli Affresch room.

The 53-year-old actor's favourite taxi driver, Alessandro Greco, was an official witness.

Speaking as he emerged from the building, smiling George told Us Weekly he felt ''very good''.

The weekend-long celebrations began on Friday (26.09.14) with bachelor and bachelorette parties, with their wedding taking place at the luxury Aman Canal Grande hotel on Saturday.

Yesterday (29.09.14), the couple hosted lunch at the Belmond Hotel Cipriani, where most guests had been staying and then they celebrated with another party in another area of the hotel later in the evening
