George Clooney will be honored with the Cecil B. DeMille Award at the 72nd annual Golden Globes.
The ceremony, held Jan. 11, 2015 at the Beverly Hilton Hotel, will be hosted by Tina Fey and Amy Poehler.
Previous recipients of the lifetime achievement honor include Woody Allen this past year and Jodie Foster in 2013.
Clooney, a three-time Golden Globe winner, has been nominated 13 times by the HFPA in his illustrious career and is also a two-time Academy Award winner, most recently as producer of the 2013 Best Picture winner “Argo.”
He has appeared in over 40 films and TV shows since cementing his star status with the 90s TV drama “E.R.” and the Lexington-born multihyphenate has also directed five pics, including “Good Night and Good Luck,” “The Ides of March,” and “The Monuments Men.”

Too many awards. Beginning to believe the rumor that awards, regardless who's giving them, are political and a way of kissing up to someone in power. Just MO folks.

This seals it. Hollywood is so stunned by George getting married that they've concluded he's either gone batshit crazy or is about to die.
The Globes are notorious for using awards for publicity and ratings. What could be better than the actor who's been all over the news, without a movie to promote, with his exotic new non-Hollywood bride, at the ceremony where he was mocked by the same hosts who will be there this year?

Re: George to Receive Cecil B DeMille Award
Well I for one am delighted by the news that George is to be awarded the Cecil B DeMille Award at the Golden Globes in January 2015.
Btw....Were there any political implications when awarding it to Jodie Foster last year ?
Excuse me asking, but I'm just a Clooney fan
living in UK.
PS...That's a lovely photo of Our Man with the article.

Way2Old -LOL!! Wonder what they'll say about him this year. Maybe they'll go easy since he's getting the award.
It seems to me a bit premature - isn't the DeMille for a body of work - something you'd get at the end of your career? I know he's done a lot, but he's far from finished. Maybe they'll give it to him again in 10 or 15 years.

Don't you feel like he is in the top now, but from the listed movies and his upcoming wedding, that he will not go any higher and perhaps going to end his career soon? My hunch tells me that he will do a small film from time to time but that's it..

He is going to be his usual charming, self-deprecating self, and will acknowledge the dubious honor of getting it at this point in his life.
It is quite an honor, but let's be real here. George will very likely have nothing in contention this year, so he could reasonably skip the awards rounds this year. This gets him there, at what may be his and Amal's first US red carpet -- unless they do AFI or something. And it gets people wondering if Tina and Amy will go after him, again, with his wife there.
And I'm not saying he doesn't deserve it. He has stellar movie credentials all the way around, and he's among the most accomplished people out there. But I think it's too early for lifetime achievement/body of work awards. It's like getting an honorary degree because the university wanted you for keynote speaker.

Way2Old - I think you're right. Everyone's going to want to see them together and see if Poehler and Fey go after him. It will certainly boost the ratings. Should be fun to watch.
Just thinking, his body of work is so extensive and varied maybe he does deserve the award now - even though I think he's far from done.

Re: George to Receive Cecil B DeMille Award
Listen, no one should doubt that George deserves this. He has been nominated and/or won film awards in every major talent category. That is some rare effing air. He's a creative giant, no question.
But there's also no question that this gets the Globes a boost in the ratings.
I wonder who they'll get to present it? Sandra Bullock? Grant Heslov? Ben Affleck, since he has 'Gone Girl' coming out, and is the new Batman?
My vote would be Jerry Weintraub. He's a producer, humanitarian who has worked with George on projects, and a longtime friend.

hey i absolutely think george deserves this he's lost awards in a number of years that made me yell at the tv. i felt a number of times he should have won. (edit) I also agree he's a creative giant. when I'm in the mood for a movie he's one of only a few people that I have a store of movies (usually amazon.com streaming) that i never get tired of watching.
i can't wait to see the show!

Totally agree Way2. This is totally self serving for the Globes. Not saying George does not deserve it, but I have to think there are film folks out there near the end of their lives who also deserve it.

Re: George to Receive Cecil B DeMille Award
"Self-serving" is kind of the Golden Globes defining characteristic. George certainly deserves the recognition, but this is about guaranteeing a big name's attendance. And maybe making up for giving this award to a child molester this year? Everybody loves George = no controversy.
He should most certainly be in line to receive the Irving Thalberg Humanitarian award at the Oscars as well.

Bingo, Missa! As George is very likely to be nominated at next year's Oscars(Yeah I have this faith in him ), maybe the Academy should award George with that Humanitarian award this year. Otherwise it would feel a bit odd or controversial if George is in contention next year....

Re: George to Receive Cecil B DeMille Award
I think the Globes probably beat them to it - I don't think they'd give their honorary awards to the same person in the same year. And I agree - with the slate of films he has set for release in 2015, I'd expect at least one nomination next year. So he probably won't be considered for the Thalberg till the 2017 ceremony (for 2016 films).

I read a few years ago that the Golden Globes foreign press has always had a soft spot for George. In any case congrats and I can't wait to watch. And Im sure Amy and Tina will have something uh very kind to say about him in their monologue. They wouldn't want any backlash from George if they went too far like this year.

Good things continue to happen to George Clooney.
As the famous actor prepares to marry his "love" Amal Alamuddin in Venice, Italy, in the very near future, Theo Kingma, President of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA), has announced that Clooney will be honored with the Cecil B. DeMille Award during the live telecast of the 2015 Golden Globes.
"The HFPA is honored to bestow the Cecil B. DeMille Award to George Clooney to celebrate his outstanding contributions both in front of and behind the camera," Kingma stated.

Clooney's achievements as a performer and a filmmaker have earned him four Golden Globes in different categories. He is also being recognized for his humanitarian efforts, such as visiting drought-stricken Darfur, Africa to film the documentary Journey to Darfur, and being designated a U.N. Messenger of Peace, one of eight individuals chosen to advocate on behalf of the U.N. and its peacekeeping efforts, in 2008.
Recent recipients of the Cecil B. DeMille Award include Woody Allen, Jodie Foster,Morgan Freeman, Robert De Niro, Martin Scorsese, Steven Spielberg, Warren Beatty, Anthony Hopkins, Robin Williams, Michael Douglas, Gene Hackman,Harrison Ford, Al Pacino and Barbra Streisand.
The 2015 Golden Globes will air live on NBC on January 11.

Re: George to Receive Cecil B DeMille Award
No way George will stop acting before he earns a Best Lead Actor Oscar. He is only person to be nominated Best Lead Actor, Best Supporting Actor, Best Director, Best Original Screenplay and Best Adapted Screenplay. He's won two and he wants to win them all to seal his place in history.
I don't think think anyone will poke fun at Amal. She may be marrying one of the most famous men on the planets but she is a "civilian." There may be jokes about George getting married but George will the butt of the joke, not Amal.

I think that Brad and Angie will be attend GG, too.
So the magazines will have the chance to make up stories on how much Angie hates Amal, Brad is envy of George etc, and the GG will have on the red carpet the two oh the most "important" (for gossip) newlywed Hollywood couple.

I'll go out on a limb and say George wants more than anything, career-wise, the Best Director Oscar. The Thalberg award coming after that would be icing. But the directing Oscar is his cake.

Of course, there's no personal rivalry there, but it is good fodder for the press.
BTW, if Brad and Angelina are the real "power" couple here. Brad's record as a producer equals, if not bests, George's. Angelina is a producer and director, and she's the only female actor besides Sandra Bullock to lead a movie that grossed in the billion-dollar category worldwide. (Maleficent actually beat Gravity at the box office.) Plus, a lot of their joint humanitarian efforts are close to home, which many fans appreciate. Not that any of George's work is to be taken lightly; but the Jolie-Pitts do a lot in the US, and don't make a big deal out of it.
And we all know what I think of Amal as a "humanitarian" or "human rights activist."
Just saying, that "power couple" thing is no contest. George wins the sexy points, but other than that, it's either a wash or the J-P's win it in a walkoff.

Yep. I remember that well. I loved both those movies, but especially GN,GL, and I sort of laughed at the thought of somebody holding one Oscar and realizing it meant he wasn't going to get the one he really wanted. Nice little problem to have.

All right, Ang Lee is a much better director than George and he deserves that year's Best Director. Then he won again in 2013.
Kind of thinking that's all because he is from Taiwan and has got the western education and resources in the Hollywood.
Some great directors from China Mainland such as Zhang Yimou and Jiang Wen may will never get Oscar due to political choices and beliefs(capitalists won't even nominate communists)...such a shame... they're as good as Ang Lee.

I hope no one takes this as a slam against the way George does things. His chosen causes need the world's attention brought to bear, so it's probably appropriate for him/his colleagues to make announcements and do press releases and interviews about the issues.
My point was that the J-P's do what they do out of the public eye, and it's work that's at least as important as George's... at least, in my opinion.

I think there is plenty that George does "out of the public eye" too for his causes. I'd hate to think its becoming a competition.
PP.....I haven't seen much PDA.....as it's known...between George & Amal......haven't seen much of them together really apart from the big charity event in Florence.

You're right, Jo.
Shaillene Woodley said recently that he was still one of her favourite people and that we may hear about all the things he does for charity, but that's about a thirtieth of what he actually does.
And someone else who knew about these things said that he devotes at least two hours a day to work on it all........

Ang Lee deserved to win in 2005 for Brokeback Mountain. He lives in America and makes films in English. It is always harder for non-English films to win Best director.
