Gravity is cleaning up in technical and director awards. Amazing nothing will come in the acting part or best picture. PROVES to me it is heavily weighted on its technical side.

Yeah... so?

Or maybe you can explain what you'd expect of a movie set in space that makes the viewer feel like it's there.

I am saying the interest in Gravity was MORE because of the visual of it and the direction not the acting. I still contend George could have been completely written out of this story and it still would have won all these awards.

Ellen was funny. She mixed things up, and didn't turn the ceremony into a roast. I'm glad they did away with the production numbers -- unless you count 'Happy.' It looks like everyone had fun, and there were some genuinely touching moments. All in all, a very good show. The talk will be about the winners first, which is as it should be. A good host makes it about the honorees and amusing the TV audience; it shouldn't be a showcase for how viciously 'hip' the host can be.

(1) That would have been 'All is Lost' in space.

(2) It probably wouldn't have gotten made.

I'm being a little tongue-in-cheek. I'm sure you heard and have been hearing the female actors talk about the misconception that a movie needs a big male name on the marquee. More specifically, the money people (men) don't like to finance "women's movies," which they define as any movie with a woman in the lead. That's asinine, but there it is.

Emmmm, I missed the first hour of the show.
I found this year's Oscar a little boring. No surprise at every category. Ellen is not as funny as Seth either. Face it, I know it's down to NO George! Rolling Eyes
Usually I didn't want to watch an Oscar ceremony without George. At least this year I have Gravity to love. It seems he still won't be in next year's Oscar.
I realize this year's full of exciting commercial blockbusters, so Bye Oscars!I'll enjoy X-men,Spiderman and Interstellar in 2014!

Re-read my post. I said it was a misconception that a male star is needed to open a big movie. MISconception. It was Sandra Bullock's movie. You know that. I know that. George and Alfonse know that. But AC knows he had to get another name to get the money and marketing to make a movie like 'Gravity.'

Seth McFarlane was mean and juvenile when he hosted. From what I've been told, he can be funny. I saw no reason to believe that. But then, I'm not a fan of the one-sided roast format. Or making fun of others' religion. Or their sexual orientation. Or choosing a moment when talented women are gathered to celebrate their good work, and going with a song-and-dance called "We Saw Your Boobs." Please.

Ellen's Oscar selfie: Not a spontaneous snap, but an ad for Samsung
DeGeneres took selfie with a Samsung device as part of ad deal with ABC, which included Samsung phone product placement. Samsung probably spent nearly $20 million on Oscars ads, Wall Street Journal reports.
By Haaretz | Mar. 5, 2014 | 9:31 PM

Ellen DeGeneres' record-breaking Oscar selfie was also product placement for Samsung, which probably spent close to $20 million on advertising in this year's ceremony, according to the Wall Street Journal.

Second-time Oscar host DeGeneres broke the record for Twitter retweets Sunday when she tweeted a selfie with a gaggle of fellow A-list stars at the ceremony. Meryl Streep, Jennifer Lawrence, Julia Roberts, Brad Pitt, Angelina Jolie and Kevin Spacey were in the shot. Bradley Cooper, who lost out on the Best Supporting Actor award to Jared Leto, took the photo.

DeGeneres played with a Samsung Galaxy Note 3 during the ceremony, and handed Cooper the phone to take the picture. The device was given to DeGeneres as part of Samsung's ad deal with ABC, which included the phone being integrated into the show, the Wall Street Journal said.

DeGeneres had suggested taking selfies during the ceremony, and ABC recommended using a Samsung phone because the company was a sponsor, someone familiar with the matter was cited as saying.

Samsung was one of the biggest sponsors of year's Academy Awards ceremony, the Wall Street Journal said – the company bought five minutes of ad time. Although the company has not disclosed details of the ABC deal, the Wall Street Journal estimates that Samsung spent some $18 million on advertising in this year's ceremony.

"Here's the thing" AHWS ....

Everyone is saying what a "happy" show this was, and how "kind and funny" Ellen was...

Could this be a "collective subconscience" attack on Tina. PPL don't like to see Bears poked, not the cuddley kind one's, an easy target is no target at all....Or am I over thinking this one?  scratch

I think it is Jo. Thank you so much. They must have a)someone else in charge of this stuff and/or b) be aware that it hasn't gone down very well with the rest of the world when they don't show it in full. (Maybe they watched Graham Norton tell the world how expensive it was to show an Oscar clip?)

Better PR anyway

@WWHS - I think it's apples and oranges. I liked the easy vibe of the Oscars with Ellen hosting, but I loved Tina and Amy, too. I think a lot of people thought Ellen was a little too nice, but pleasant enough.  - I don't think poking the bear entered into it. - Now, if George had been there it might have been another story!  Smile

@ Joanna & PAN - I just think YouTube staffers are a bunch of sadists. They took down George's full "Actor's Studio" interview and chopped it into confetti! Now all you can see are a few short clips. Phooey! I could watch the whole thing over and over. I loved it. Watching the clips is like eating one potato chip - I want more!

I think the "kind and funny" comments are more of a reference to Seth Macfarlane last year, who in my opinion was neither.  And I'm not overly sensitive either; if you take this gig, I care far more about the "funny" than the "kind".  I still think Tina and Amy's "rather float off and die" joke was hilarious, and AHWS, he's a big boy, he can take it.

Jo, I am a ride-or-die Cumberbitch too, so excited to hear about Hamlet!  I had heard when it was in the planning stages that he was trying to do it with Gary Oldman.  Is Oldman in the cast too?  That might be worth a flight to the UK!

Found this pic, thought the costume was super clever:
