Even if it isn't a critical success, it has succeeded probably more than he expected in starting up the discussion about missing art. There are articles in the press about it all the time now. Well done!

I agree and this was their first big budget movie. It cost 70 million to make and about the same for promotion. So the rest is gravy. I'm sure Sony is happy also the critics in my opinion were about 50-50. However I see much less of us everyday people knocking MM. It is mind boggling what it has stirred up in the art world. I think George and company can be very proud of their accomplishment. xxx

This tweeter is a rotten tomato critic:
The Monuments Men very quietly became George Clooney's biggest hit as a director. It's about time that guy caught a break...

Having seen and heard so much about the actual making of the film and the good atmosphere enjoyed by all participants, I think George should get an Oscar for

WWHS - It doesn't matter to us, but it does to the money men. That this movie did so well financially even though the critics weren't too kind, guarantees that he will still be able to get financing for future films.

GNGL did well at boxoffice too and got BP nomination, still think that's his peak as a director.

Lizzy, Leatherheads flopped hard...but he still got financing for his next films right? George is now a trademark in the business to do such unusual adult or period projects. The money men trust his crafts.

To my understanding (what I´ve read about it) MM is doing very good. I still haven´t seen it, but it has achieved a lot. Right.

Sevens - Sorrry to say the money men will only continue to finance his films for as long as they make money (or at least break even). As long as his name brings people to the theaters they'll back him, but if he moves behind the camera and his films don't do well enough for them the funding will dry up. He knows this. He has often said he has a limited time left before they "take away the keys to the toy chest".

I think this might just mean that George will have to appear in front of the camera a little longer that he might have planned. Actually the movie is a success, just depends if you think it would have done this good if George did not appear in the movie.

@Mazy - I don't know how the movie would have done without him in it, but I think what really made it work was that he promoted the hell out of it. I don't think he ever worked so hard to publicize a film and it paid off, big time. I just hope he doesn't have to do it again.

Re: The Monuments Men - Box Office
Yeah I've seen it...it just did ok for the first week.
But they're moving it out of theaters this week as everyone is crazy for Captain America. Some went to see MM last night and were told it was gone...can you believe they remained the screening schedules for some older films but let go of MM? Sad.
I predict it will do less than 8million here in total.

Re: The Monuments Men - Box Office
I've been thinking films like MM normally don't get released in China at all because it has no visual effects. The audience only LOVE all kinds of visual effects especially in 3D. Regardless of any cultural quality or depth in story.
That's sad.
Anyway it's a miracle George finally gets money from our boxoffice. At least MM isn't a total flop here.

Re: The Monuments Men - Box Office
I think it is off the list....so it made about $76 million cumulative in the US.
From Deadline:
Across other Fox titles, The Grand Budapest Hotel added $5.5M from 2,369 screens in 34 markets for a cume of $54.3m. There are still 21 markets to release including Australia and Italy next weekend. Mr Peabody & Sherman took $11.2M from 9,325 screens in 65 markets this weekend. It notably held in China with $6.5M for an overseas cume of $137.4M. George Clooney’s The Monuments Men has now cumed $76.4M, and The Book Thief held well in Italy, dropping just 2%, for an international total of $53.4M.
