"Our Brand Is Crisis" Bombs at the Box Office

Marking the latest adult offering to miss at the box office, David Gordon Green's dramedy Our Brand Is Crisis opened Friday to $1.1 million for a projected $3.3 million weekend, the worst nationwide start of Sandra Bullock's career.
The political film, also starring Billy Bob Thornton, was a passion project for Bullock and producers George Clooney and Grant Heslov. It has been ravaged by critics, however, while audiences gave it a C+ CinemaScore. Warners co-financed the $28 million movie with Participant Media.
It certainly doesn't help that Halloween falls on a Saturday this year, but no one expected the weekend's new offerings to get this spooked.
Our Brand is Crisis, pacing to come in No. 7, also means more bad news for Warner Bros., which has suffered a string of misses, including Pan and The Man from U.N.C.L.E. Inspired by true events, Bullock and Thornton play political operatives trying to influence the Bolivian presidential election.
To date, Bullock's lowest nationwide opening is Two If By Sea, which debuted to $4.7 million in 1996.
Our Brand is Crisis looks to be beat by fellow new offering Burnt, although the Bradley Cooper cooking dramedy is also getting scalded. Directed by John Wells, The Weinstein Co. release grossed $1.5 million Friday from 3,003 theaters for a projected $5.1 million weekend.

Re: "Our Brand Is Crisis" Bombs at the Box Office
One consolation may be that this weekend was the worst box office take across the board for the whole year - not just for "Crisis".
I think the timing of the release hurt the movie. Because Halloween fell on a weekend retailers really pushed the idea of parties and trick-or-treating in a major effort to boost sales of costumes and candy.
Add to that the fact that many of us are sick to death of politics, thanks to the Republican debate circus and Donald Trump - and the fact that there has been an orgy of Halloween themed and horror movies on tv for the last week or so. No wonder nobody went to the movies!

Definitely Lizzy, sick of politics already, maybe if this had come out before all the political nonsense started people would have been interested. Halloween isn't just for kids so the adults were partying as well and enjoying themselves not many interested in a movie unfortunately .

It appears that Our Brand is Crisis has run its course. It's not even registering on any of the sites for boxoffice totals. Poor Sandy...

I wonder if they'll even release it abroad. It dropped from 1700 theaters already here.

Was only in theaters around here a few brief days. Not even long enough to plan to see a screening.

It's still playing in a handful of theaters in my area. But hey I live in a political town.
I still want to see it but I won't be able to this weekend or next. So I may have missed my chance to see it in a theater. Have to wait for the DVD.

Re: "Our Brand Is Crisis" Bombs at the Box Office
I'm not sure if we'll be able to see it in Europe except than on DVD. We tend to think that our political systems are very different, that lobbyism like in the US doesn't exist here... I remember after I'd seen 'The Ides Of March' that everybody said that our election process is very different, and in fact it isn't. Except of the candidates don't have to raise so much money themselves. But even when it comes to local elections it's surely about lobbyism. Our vice chancellor and Secretary of Commerce lives nearby and in our electoral district, and I can tell you that our local industry always try to pressure him to support them etc.
