Someone please tell me the cost in dollars?
Stacy Keibler’s diet secret – The Clean Cleanse Program

Want to know the secret to Stacy Keibler’s body ? Err of course you do - look at her!

The svelte star has confessed that the reason she looks so darn hot is due to the extreme detox diet, The Clean Cleanse which involves a lot of shakes. And Gwyneth Paltrow is also a fan (of course).
Extreme detoxing has become a bit of a thing in Hollywood and over the last 6 months has been catapulted to even more accessible heights with The 5:2 diet, but is The Clean Cleanse something you should try? Or approach with caution?

Any form of shake based detox usually starts those fad diet alarm bells a'ringing, but with all the recent scientific research about the benefits of intermittent fasting for your long-term health and metabolism…suddenly, we're not so sure.

Nina Omotoso, Nutritional Therapist at FLO health & nutrition and Revital Health Place says that if you know what you are doing, detoxing your body can be extrememly beneficial.

"Periods of cleansing are incredibly beneficial to our health; removing nutrient-poor, highly processed foods, stimulants such as sugar, caffeine and alcohol, and major food groups like gluten and dairy which are often the cause of food intolerances, really allows the body to rest and reset."

"However, when cleansing and detoxing, it’s important to consider what you’ll replace these foods with, the supplements that will form a key part of your detox programme and your lifestyle – factors which many programmes overlook. Are the carbs low GL? Will you get adequate protein and healthy fats with each meal? Will you add digestive enzymes or probiotics to further support digestion and cleansing? What happens when you start to eat ‘normally’?" she explains.

We sought to find out all the facts about this latest celebrity fast.

How it works
Designed by Dr. Junger M.D as a way to improve his own health, The Clean Cleanse has supposedly become the most endorsed and supported detox in the world.

Lasting for a whopping 21-days, the three-week detox eliminates all processed foods and (rather uniquely) all allergen triggers by combining shakes and supplements along with a meal plan for a complete cleanse.

The plan states that you’ll have two of their nurtient enriched shakes per day, alongside one solid meal from the approved foods list, as well as their supplements at each meal. Sound like quite a lot so far?

The Clean Cleanse Program website explains that the detox works by cleansing your body of all potential harms including a hollistic approach to your health.

'"The Clean Cleanse works by removing the most common food allergens while lightening up your diet, so your body can spend its energy cleansing and healing.”

You then have a small period of re-introducing foods back into your normal diet as the detox ends.
What you can eat:
• Whole vegetables, leafy greens
• Brown rice, not gluten grubs
• Stevia
• Beans, lentils
• Green tea
• Wild fish, organic chicken and turkey
• Nuts, seeds and nut butters
• Avocado and coconut
• Whole fruits and berries
What you can’t eat:
• Dairy
• Gluten
• Processed sugar
• Soy
• Coffee, soda, alcohol
• Beef, Pork
• Corn
• Tomatoes, eggplants, peppers, potatoes, yams, sweet potatoes
• Bananas, strawberries, organs, grapes

Typical day:
Breakfast: Cleanse shake combined with your morning supplements
Lunch: A solid meal from the ‘what you can eat’ list like a green salad with chicken breast and avocado. Plus your afternoon supplements.

Dinner: Your second cleanse shake of the day, plus your evening supplements.

Positives
Although this detox is extreme, there are certian positives that Nutritionist for Naturopatica, Miguel Toribio-Mateas, says are undeniable.

"Detox diets like Clean Cleanse can be really useful in certain circumstances, but they may not be for everyone. However, the health benefits of some of the individual elements of "the program" are indisputable. For example, there is now ample evidence that a long "fasting" period between meals can help normalise metabolism and reduce inflammation," he says.

You are also given a whole load of clear instructions about what you can and cannot consume so you know exactly what to, and what not to do.

You also can get round the clock advice and help from nutritionists and nurses, along with recipe ideas and a masive community of other cleansers to draw inspiration from on their website.

As well as this, unlike some other detox diets, Nina says that The Clean Cleanse does take into account the fact you will be losing out on some key nutrients and foods that the body needs and does something to ensure you are as balanced as can be.

"The Clean Programme does consider this by encouraging eating whole foods which would be included in a good low-GL diet – the type of diet that keeps your blood sugar and insulin levels balanced and is great for improving skin, mood and energy. Also adding avocado or almond butter to the low calorie shakes is an excellent way of introducing healthy fats. Their supplement suggestions are also quite good, although I’d recommend including a high-strength multivitamin and extra chromium to avoid the energy dips that are associated with poor blood sugar control."

Their approach to the aftercare of the detox also acts as a massive positive according to Nina.

"They also encourage a period of reflection when reintroducing particular food groups – this can highlight any digestive issues and is something that I always encourage my clients to do," she says.

Disadvantages

With any meal replacement diet it’s hard to follow for most people, especially for a whopping 21 days! Miguel says that despite the health beneifts, not everyone will be able to push through long enough to get to that point.

"Not everyone is able to leave 12 hours between meals, and some could feel shaky or faint."

If you start to feel sick or faint whilst doing this cleanse, our advice, stop and go to your GP just in case.
Miguel continue to say that there can be issues deriving from the fact it can be rather generalised.

“The Clean Program is very much a “one size fits all”, and we are all unique, so whilst it may work wonders for some, it may disappoint some others. When looking at our health, we need to think about longer-term lifestyle changes, rather than quick patches. And working with a professional gives the best results,” he says.

As a quick fix to shed extra pounds fast the Clean Cleanse might work, but the likelihood is that if you’re doing this for major weight loss which will keep the weight off, you might struggle.

Another big disadvantage is that this detox isn't cheap. In fact, it's going to set you back just short of £200 for the classic cleanse package...Yikes.
