Trailer Sneak Peek: Clooney Defies 'Gravity'

This Thursday ET is debuting the first trailer for the highly anticipated Gravity starring George Clooney and Sandra Bullock, and we have a first look at heart-pounding footage from the outer space thriller!

In theaters October 4, Gravity centers around a pair of astronauts struggling to survive after a disaster in space separates them from their ship. Bullock plays Dr. Ryan Stone, a brilliant medical engineer on her first shuttle mission, with veteran astronaut Matt Kowalsky (Clooney) in command of his last flight before retiring.

On a seemingly routine spacewalk, disaster strikes and the shuttle is destroyed, leaving the astronauts completely alone -- tethered to nothing but each other and spiraling out into the blackness. As fear turns to panic, every gulp of air eats away at what little oxygen is left. Can they figure out a way to make it home alive?

Directed by Alfonso Cuaron (Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, Children of Men), the long-in-development project has seen a variety of A-list talent attached at various points, including Robert Downey Jr., Angelina Jolie, Natalie Portman, Marion Cotillard, Scarlett Johansson and Blake Lively.

The first poster for one of the most anticipated films of the year has arrive. We got our first incredibly brief look at footage from director Alfonso Cuaron’s long-awaited sci-fi film Gravity last night ahead of the trailer debut on Thursday, and this first poster does a magnificent job of teasing the vast and dangerous nature of space in the film. The story centers on an astronaut (Sandra Bullock) who is stranded alone in space following a catastrophic event aboard a spacecraft. George Clooney also stars, but Bullock is rumored to spend the majority of the screentime in the film utterly alone. The pic was originally slated to open last year, but was subsequently pushed back so that more time could be spent on the visual effects. With a master like Curaron at the helm, this is sure to be unlike anything we’ve seen before.

I heard this comment on the radio on Hollywood movies in general: they are all made for ... teenagers, meaning those movies are pretty ridiculous.

Well it's about time! Even though it's obvious this movie is going to be very depressing (have had enough depressing things happen in the last three years alone that my tolerance for watching depressing things is wearing very thin, so bear with me), I'm still anxious for George to be gracing the screen again.

I don't think George is saying "terrific" about the explosion. Anyway, when's the last time a movie trailer aired clips that were in the same consecutive order as in the movie itself?

I hope like Pink Ice says it's not as depressing as it seems it may be. I'm at a point as well that I would appreciate just a good old fashioned movie that entertains. This sounds a bit too cerebral for me in my current condition. Used to love those kind of movies but I'm pooped right now so I'm looking forward to MM.

Sci-fi can be hard to do. Looks good. Think it will be a hit especially with the younger groups. Sci-fi can seem so fantasy setting and thats why a lot of them are harder to do when you're trying to instill what is possible and keep it interesting. Most of them will have that fantasy setting(unreal quality) and often use special effects that are obviously digitized work(that can take a very long time to do).

This looks great, considering its based on situations that can so easily happen. How they handle the possibility of making it to safety will also have an effect on the reality side and how it is accepted by audiences.

Looks great so far. Think it will be pretty intense all the way thru because this one is about life or death. I don't want it to be, but think this one will also be about him choosing to die so she can live. But no matter how painful that would be to watch, it usually makes for a very poignant moment.

I don't think "younger groups" will like this movie. It looks like more of a thinker movie to me than an action movie and sadly, that's what "younger groups" seem to gravitate towards. I love many action movies but I also like movies like The Descendants and unfortunately those movies tend not to be made much.

I believe he's the one going off into space at the end of the trailer,
so she's on her own.

He says "Terrific" in the trailer.....as he's admiring the view of Earth from space.

Spacewalk bid to fix station leak

The six-member crew noticed white flakes of ammonia leaking out of the space station (Nasa)
Two astronauts will make a hastily-planned spacewalk to try to fix an ammonia leak in the International Space Station's power system.

Officials emphasised that the six-member crew was not in danger.

The leak in a cooling system was discovered on Thursday when "snowflakes" of ammonia were seen flying away from the station.

Spacewalks are rarely done on such short notice, but the US space agency wanted to check out the leak before all the ammonia escaped. They also want to take advantage of a spacewalking crew member who is about to return home.

Officials said the space station had plenty of power, even though the leak forced Nasa to shut off the power channel from one of eight solar panels that supply electricity.

The station can operate fine with only seven electrical channels, space station programme manager Michael Suffredini said. Power from the affected panel was rerouted to the other seven systems.

Mr Suffredini said the chief suspect for the leak was space junk hitting a cooling tube, but the area had a slow small leak for many years that suddenly accelerated on Thursday. "You're talking a very, very, very small hole," he said at a news conference.

While he described it as a "serious situation", he characterised it more as an annoyance.

Nasa hopes the leak is in a small pump box. During the six-hour spacewalk, US astronauts Chris Cassidy and Tom Marshburn will replace the 260lb box with a nearby spare.

While Nasa has had to do impromptu spacewalks before, the have not been done on the space station since it was completely built and operating as a finished lab, said chief flight director Norm Knight.
