PA-N reminded me that this is coming up this weekend. Maybe he won't be at the casting call in Germany and will fly home for this. Here is an interesting article discussing how it is a better forecaster for the Oscars:

Producers Guild of America 2013 Predictions: Lincoln is Front-Runner to Win

The Producers Guild of America is thought to be one the most important awards for a film in order to win the Best Picture accolade at the Academy Awards. This year the guild chose ten films of which eight are nominated for Best Picture at the Oscar.
A win for any of the eight will elevate its chances at the Academy. Previous winners include "The Artist," "The King's Speech," "The Hurt Locker," and "Slumdog Millionaire," all of which won the Best Picture Oscar.
Argo-Ben Affleck's third feature was the front-runner until the Academy did not nominate it for the Best Director Award. The film has won the Golden Globe and Critics' Choice awards but Academy members do not choose those awards. As a result, in order to secure a win at the Academy, Argo must garner the PGA's top award.

Beasts of the Southern Wild-Benh Zeitlin's film has a strong chance of winning the award especially after garnering a strong showing from the Oscar nominations. However, its lack of precursor awards and the fact that the film has no stars could hurts its potential of winning.
Django Unchained-Quentin Tarentino's controversial western looks like a placeholder as it has not won a single Best Picture accolade and many pundits have been disconcerted by the amount of violence in the film. The fact that it also did not garner a director nod at the Oscars and no SAG nominations also puts it at a disadvantage.

Les Miserables-Tom Hooper's epic musical seemed like the perfect candidate to win the award after a obtaining major SAG and DGA nominations. However, the fact that film obtained no director nod at the Oscars hurt its chances. "Les Miserables" could win if the Guild decides to give a musical the award.

Life of Pi- Ang Lee's film has garnered buzz ever since it landed 11 Oscar nominations. The film's strong showing elevated its momentum and made many think that it could surprise. However, the fact that it has no acting nominations and no SAG nominations puts the film at risk. If the PGA awards the film, it could become the first film to win without SAG nominations.

Lincoln-Steven Spielberg's biopic about the life of Lincoln is the front-runner given the fact that it was nominated for 12 Academy Awards and all four Guilds. The film has everything going for it, including a strong box office performance. If "Lincoln" wins the PGA, it is sure to win the Academy Award for Best Picture.

Moonrise Kingdom-Wes Anderson's comedy was supposed to be nominated for the Academy Award after winning the Gotham Award. However, it slowly lost momentum throughout awards season. It's nomination for the PGA is a consolation prize as the film has no chance of winning after of being snubbed at the Oscars.

Silver Linings Playbook-David O. Russell's dramedy is "Lincoln" and "Argo's" biggest threat at this point. The film garnered a strong showing at the Oscars and was nominated for three out four guilds. It also won the Toronto Film Festival, an award that Academy Award winners "The King's Speech" and "Slumdog Millionaire" won before taking home Best Picture. However, its lack of precursor awards and lack of BAFTA praise could hurt its chances.

Skyfall-Like "Moonrise Kingdom," Sam Mendes' Bond film is not nominated for the top Oscar and therefore has no chance of winning the PGA. Its inclusion in the list is recognition for being one the best Bond films of all time.

Zero Dark Thirty-Like "Argo," Kathryn Bigelow's thriller was also thought to be a front-runner after winning a number of awards. However, the film quickly lost momentum when it fell into controversy and Academy members started boycotting the film. Bigelow also failed to garner a directing nomination. If "Zero Dark Thirty" surprises, it could regain its momentum.

Predictions: "Lincoln" is most likely to win the PGA. Steven Spielberg has not won the award for a live action feature since 1999, when "Saving Private Ryan" won.

I was only pointing out that GH wasn't in the photos and wondered if he would be the one going. It is apparently a good predictor of the Oscar for Best Picture.

I have been looking but I am not sure it is televised.

As for PGAs, not sure. In theory it would be possible to take advantage of the clock, and don't know if it's a +one event, but SG is doing a Cycle for Life thing in LA between 4 30 and 6 30

Argo has triumphed again - Ben Affleck and George Clooney picked up the Zanuck Award for Outstanding Producer of Theatrical Motion Picture at Saturday's (26Jan12) Producers Guild Awards.

The trio beat out the producers of Beasts of the Southern Wild, Django Unchained, Les Miserables, Life of Pi, Lincoln, Moonrise Kingdom, Silver Linings Playbook, Skyfall and Zero Dark Thirty to land the coveted trophy.

Meanwhile, the award for Outstanding Producer of Animated Theatrical Motion Pictures went to Clark Spencer for Wreck-It Ralph; the prize for Outstanding Producer of Documentary Theatrical Motion Pictures was claimed by Malik Bendielloul and Simon Chinn for Searching for Sugar Man, and Tom Hanks and his production partners Gary Goetzman, Jay Roach, Amy Sayres, Steven Shareshian and Danny Strong scored the David L. I guess GH was there....from Deadline

PGA Win: Is ‘Argo’ Now Oscar Frontrunner?

It’s starting to get serious. This wild ride of an awards season may not be predictable, according to conventiona wisdoml. But in the end the winner of the Producer Guild’s Best Picture award Saturday night was completely predictable in my opinion. After all, Warner Bros’ Argo features a key role for a Hollywood movie producer who rises to the occasion and helps make a difference in the world, winning the hearts and minds of a group of producers. Imagine that. This is the first guild to weigh in so we have a tentative frontrunner in Argo now for the Academy Awards’ Best Picture. Had producer/director/star Ben Affleck not been snubbed for a Best Director Oscar, the word “tentative” wouldn’t even be used. When I talked to Affleck in the Beverly Hilton ballroom moments after his picture won, he still seemed to be reeling from the roller coaster ride he’s been on, but clearly happy. (Co-producer Grant Heslov suggested they should call their fellow producer George Clooney in Berlin and tell him the good news.) “When I didn’t get the Best Director nomination after everybody told me I would, I was depressed. But then that same day I won at Critics Choice which was really torturous because everyone kept asking me all night how I felt,” Affleck told me. “Then we win at the Globes.” Argo was also named the year’s Best Picture at the Critics Choice Movie Awards. And today it was also recipient of the Golden Tomato as Rotten Tomatoes’ winner for ‘Best Reviewed Film In Wide Release’ with a 96% positive score. And now it has the PGA under its belt.

It was a fun show marked by some terrific speeches, especially from Norman Lear Achievement In Television winner J.J. Abrams and The Weinstein brothers Harvey and Bob who received the guild’s prestigious Milestone Award. The new “p.g.a. mark” on film productions was a source of talk and pride – but the PGA’s “mark” on this awards season could be just as significant. This Guild is an Oscar bellwether that has predicted right the last 5 straight years and in 2009 sent The Hurt Locker and in 2010 The King’s Speech on their way to eventual Best Picture Oscar triumphs. Or is this a year when the Guilds may not matter as much. The race does not yet appear out of reach for competitors like The Weinstein Company’s Silver Linings Playbook, Fox’s Life Of Pi, or DreamWorks’ Lincoln. The latter may be feeling a severe case of frontrunner-itis after many pundits had made it the favorite – thus setting it up to fail. It has yet to score a major precursor victory. And, outside of a sure-thing Best Actor win for Daniel Day-Lewis at tomorrow’s next big acid test, the SAG Awards, it is facing an uphill climb to prevail there for Ensemble Cast which is more likely to go to Silver Linings or Les Miserables or Argo with a cast of about 130 parts.

An Oscar strategist for another film immediately emailed me in a bit of a panic after the PGA’s Argo win and wrote, “Oh no. Now what?” Actually with a year as fractured as this has been, and with a full month to go before the Oscar telecast, the race may still have a few more surprises in store. At this morning’s lively PGA producers panel at the Landmark Theatre, I talked to a couple of Academy members who said they expected Argo to win PGA but Lincoln to prevail at the Oscars. Of course, that could still happen even though Lincoln’s momentum has been slowed to say the least. But Oscar often has his own ideas. And, although not unprecedented, a film whose nomination count is consideraby less than the leaders generally cannot be considered the favorite. Lincoln, leading with 12, Life Of Pi with 11, and Silver Linings and Les Mis with 8 apiece, all beat Argo’s 7. And Argo doesn’t have a directing nomination: no film has won Best Picture without a Best Director nomination since Driving Miss Daisy 23 years ago – and that was an abberation even then.

But something’s in the air. Argo could be emerging as a kind of consensus choice in a year of outstanding films, a beneficiary of a severely split vote. It is significant that the PGA uses the same preferential vote counting system as the Academy so there is a high level of correlation between the two groups. Assuming it comes up short at SAG, Argo will be tested next Saturday when Ben Affleck is up for a DGA award. A win there could set up a very interesting Oscar night. DGA ballots aren’t due back until Friday so how this PGA victory affects that vote is anyone’s guess at this point.

‘Argo’ Leads Producers Guild Awards
By MELENA RYZIK

BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. — “Argo” continued its upward momentum through awards season, as Ben Affleck’s film took the top prize at the Producers Guild Awards.

“I’m really surprised. I’m not even in the PGA,” Mr. Affleck said as he accepted the Darryl F. Zanuck trophy, for the film he directed, starred in and helped produce. (Noting that he was in a roomful of producers with hiring power, Mr. Affleck reminded them, “I’m still acting.”)

Grant Heslov, another producer of the film along with George Clooney, said the challenge for him was working with two of People’s sexiest men alive. “That puts a lot of pressure on me,” he said.

Industry watchers at the ceremony were not surprised by the win for “Argo,” the story of how a fake Hollywood movie aided in an escape during the Iranian hostage crisis. “It’s about producers,” one said.

“Searching for Sugar Man,” by the first-time producer-director Malik Bendjelloul, a Swede, won best documentary, and “Wreck-It Ralph” took the trophy for best animated film. Accepting that award, the producer Clark Spencer credited a “renaissance” at Disney animation to John Lasseter, a Pixar founder.

In television, “Modern Family,” “Homeland” and “Game Change” were winners. The event, held at the Beverly Hilton Hotel here, also included special prizes and tributes for J.J. Abrams, the next “Star Wars” director who is the son of two TV producers and whose speech was personal, touching and funny; and Bob and Harvey Weinstein.

Bob Weinstein noted that he would never have received a tribute award without his brother: “And I know because he just told me so five minutes ago.”

I was thinking about Argo today when I heard it won this award. Another in a long line of accolades.

And I wondered why it was beating out films like Lincoln which has gotten so much great press.

For me, if I had a vote, I think what this film does (and that's based on Ben's directing and the script) is that even though we know the ending i.e. that they get out - Ben manages to still make our hearts race - especially at the end when they are on the last legs of their journey.

The close call when the authorities realize where they've been hiding and rushing to the Canadian Ambassador's home.

And in the airport - when they get held up by the customs agents as they are trying to get on the plane.

And then again on the plane itself. The intensity of the suspense - even though I knew they made it out - was just so well orchestrated! The fact that Ben wasn't nominated for the Director's Award must have been some sort of mathematical fluke! Maybe so many thought he WOULD be nominated that they voted for other films and in that way he got shut out.

I really believe Argo DOES deserve Best Picture and Ben should have been nominated for Best Director. He has crafted a suspenseful, sometimes funny and definitely entertaining story.

Paint me cynical here, Lorna, but I think Hollywood rather likes films that glamourise Hollywood. It's maybe a little flattering to themselves.

I live in N.Y. There has been a tremendous campaign here for Argo. Ads on t.v., in papers, and B.A. has been interviewed on many shows. Haven't seen much for Lincoln. I don't know if this has an effect on the Academy voters. Maybe those of you in PR can comment.

Cynical, yes, but also probably true. My husband and I saw both movies, and we think that Lincoln was far and away the better movie. Katie, you probably spoke the truth.

Mm. There's a small element of that, but I felt that much more strongly last year when The Artist, which was an homage to early Hollywood won everything in sight, (and the dog probably helped them).

Argo is action and taut drama from the word go, with humour at the right times thrown in and is about recent history. Lincoln is brilliant but dour and grey and longer and not such recent history. So in my view that is why Argo is doing better.
