George Clooney wins Best Actor award + presents Joel Siegel Award at Critics Choice Awards

George Clooney has signed up for the Critics Choice Awards a special presenter. The director-actor of “The Ides of March” and “The Descendants” is the first big Hollywood A list name I can tell you about for the January 12th Critics Choice Awards. Clooney, I am told, will present the prestigious Joel Siegel Award at the star studded event that’s shown live on VH-1.
Siegel, the late great film critic, is remembered with an award for social consciousness.Luckily, with several nominations, Clooney will already be at the Critics Choice Awards, so it won’t require a special trip. The winner of the award has not yet been revealed. Past winners include Kevin Bacon, Matt Damon, and Richard Gere.
I am told that all of the big name nominees will be present for the VH-1 show, making the “Critics Choice” awards the first big televised star-cast of the season. The show should be on a big network like CBS, but there’s a conflict, it seems, with the People’s Choice Awards that air the prior night. (This is so strange since “People’s Choice” is not considered a legit enterprise by the entertainment press.)
Anyway: the other big name set for the Critics Choice will be a “major rock star” to present a lifetime achievement award to Martin Scorsese. This will likely be either Eric Clapton, Keith Richards or Robbie Robertson. Sadly, the subject of this year’s Scorsese doc, George Harrison, isn’t available. But he’ll be sending good vibes from the beyond for his terrific “Living in the Material World” film.

Sean Penn up for Critics' Choice honor
Published: Jan. 9, 2012 at 11:55 AM
SANTA MONICA, Calif., Jan. 9 (UPI) -- Hollywood's Broadcast Film Critics Association says it plans to honor actor-director Sean Penn with its Joel Siegel Award.
Actor George Clooney, a 13-time Critics' Choice Award nominee known for his humanitarian work, is to present Penn with the prize at the 17th annual Critics' Choice Movie Awards ceremony, which is to take place Thursday and air live on VH1.
The annual award pays homage to "Good Morning America" film critic and BFCA member Joel Siegel, who died of cancer in June 2007. The prize honors those who use their fame as an enhanced platform to do good works for others, the association said.
Penn, a two-time Oscar winner and seven-time Critics' Choice Award nominee, founded the J/P Haitian Relief Organization shortly after a 7.0 magnitude earthquake struck Haiti Jan. 12, 2010.
"We are extremely proud to be able to make this presentation to Sean on this night in particular, exactly two years after the devastating earthquake struck Haiti," BFCA President Joey Berlin said in a statement Monday.
"While it was heartening to see such an outpouring of support and aid for the Haitian people in the immediate aftermath of the tragedy, the long-term commitment made by Sean and his organization is particularly notable. The Joel Siegel Award was created to spotlight such above-and-beyond efforts by the leading lights of our industry and its spirit is truly personified by Sean Penn."

Yep, I think his tuxedo is going to get a lot of use. Think he still has only the one or did Armani spring for a backup tux too?

Re: George Clooney wins Best Actor award + presents Joel Siegel Award at Critics Choice Awards
Actually it is a very embarrassing show....no jokes seem to be going over very well. Oh and does anyone know if it is taped...twitter keeps saying GC has won already....oh found this on Celebuzz:
[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
No doubt, George Clooney and Stacy Keibler are one of the hottest Hollywood couples out there, so just how do these two get red carpet ready?
Celebuzz talked to George at the Critics’ Choice Movie Awards, where he and the beautiful blonde walked the press line together. What’s their get-ready ritual?
“I play basketball, and she gets ready,” he says with a smile.
How cute is that? Even more adroable, when she wasn’t on his arm, he always asked where she was and was looking for her to make sure she was fine.
When the conversation turned to his pal Brad Pitt, he said he has nothing but love for his fellow nominee.
“He’s my buddy I always root for him,” George said.
-------------------------------------------------------
I remember people saying the same things about previous girlfriends like SL... also the basketball comment too....at least he is consistent.

He does look better without the spray tan, PD, you're right.
Also, is it just me or is he not hunching up quite as much tonight as he has been in photos from previous days?

He is looking a little better maybe it was too cold in NY for him I know that really buggers me up. But I watched the show and his speech was great and his Sean Penn thing was quick but nice. He was funny as always and he is clearly liked by the Critics.

Katie, I'd go more with: Ladies and gentlemen, our newest debutante escorted by her father
Tell me this doesn't sound like G & S at one of these award shows:
At many debutante balls, girls are accompanied by their fathers. These men play a very formal role and are introduced after their daughters; their profession and title are provided. It's then the job of the fathers to escort their daughters on a stroll around the venue, giving the debutante time to show off to the on-looking crowd. Eventually, the father accompanies his daughter back to the stage or wherever the walk began.

Great pictures thank you all.
Loved the ones of George with Brad especially, they both looked genuinely pleased to see each other.
Good to see George's GF looking after him and doing what we all do sometimes for our men, making sure they look tidy !

Re: George Clooney wins Best Actor award + presents Joel Siegel Award at Critics Choice Awards
Talk about a picture being worth a thousand words.
Sorry, Kim Novak, there's to be no throwing yourself in front of The Artist train, as the romantic—and funny!—homage to the silent-film era was named Best Picture at the 17th Annual Critics' Choice Movie Awards, thereby cementing itself as an Oscar front-runner alongside whatever wins Best Drama on Sunday at the Golden Globes.
French auteur Michel Hazanavicius was named Best Director for helming the novel throwback, which also was a winner for Best Costume Design and Best Score.
But the Broadcast Film Critics Association, which does the back-patting on this occasion, didn't get too artsy tonight, also doling out top awards to a major movie star and a major hit with the masses.

George Clooney continued to prove that he's more than a piece of meat by besting fellow T-bone Brad Pitt in the Best Actor category for playing a dad trying to do everything he can to keep life under control when his cheating wife ends up in a coma in The Descendants.
He told a story about a conversation he had with his dad years ago, before nabbing his life-changing role on ER.
"He just said to me, 'If you're not proud of what you're doing, then do it better, or do something else,'" Clooney recalled his pops saying. "'You didn't have to be a sharecropper or make your own leisure suit, and we would hope that you are happy about that. We hope the work that you do, you would be proud of.' I have to say, I am very proud to be in this film."
And though there was no hope for it in the lead actor category, The Help's Oscar fortunes skyrocketed tonight as the female-centric drama took home three awards, including Best Actress for Viola Davis, Best Supporting Actress for Octavia Spencer and Best Acting Ensemble.

"I am absolutely so humbled," Davis said. "They say the two most important days in a person's life were the day you were born and the day you discover why you were born. And you know, five hours on the bus going to acting classes when I was 14 years old and coming from very challenging circumstances, I absolutely knew I wanted to be an actor because I wanted to be a somebody...I consider it my honor to pay homage to these woman who in this time period were not allowed to dream, not allowed to find their purpose. But thank God, and praise God, that they gave birth to me, my mother, my grandmother. And I thank Kathryn Stockett for writing The Help.
"I am absolutely so honored to be in the company of so many women of so many sizes and ages and races, and to be a part of a story that is such an incredible part of American history, to show, you know what, despite the atrocities that have happened in the past, friendship and love can help us find our way. Thank you very much," she concluded.
Meanwhile, this is the second year in a row that Aaron Sorkin has helped turn a compelling book into a movie that, on first glance, seems unfilmable but then turns out to be one of the most engaging, snappy, well-made films of the year.
Last year it was The Social Network, this year it was Moneyball, and Sorkin again wrote the Best Adapted Screenplay, along with Stevian Zaillian and Stan Chervin.

In what could be the start of an awards-season sweep, 82-year-old Christopher Plummer won Best Supporting Actor for his role as a widower who makes the most of the last years of his life after coming out as a gay man in Beginners.
"Being honored by a critic is like being on a three-week binge with the enemy," the snowy-haired Brit said graciously, starting in on the type of speech that only a British actor tends to give. "It's pretty heady stuff, but I'm cool about it. It's rather like going back to school and the headmaster calls you in and gives you a good report. Or it's also like beginning your career all over again and waiting for your first decent review.
"Anyway, I'm completely turned on," Plummer added. "I feel terribly young tonight suddenly and, at my age, I need all the help I can get in that department. So thank you indeed, you've brought back my youth." (And seeing as how he hasn't won an Oscar yet, this could be his year.)

"I gave [The New Yorker film critic] David Denby a kidney for nothing, apparently," cracked Young Adults star Patton Oswalt, who presented after losing to Plummer.
"Jerry Lewis once said he didn't think women were funny. So I'd just like to say, with all respect, 'F--k you!'" Bridesmaids executive producer Judd Apatow said in accepting for Best Comedy.
The fierce cast of The Help bested the Bridesmaids gals for Best Ensemble, while 13-year-old Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close star Thomas Horn upset The Descendants' Shailene Woodley for Best Young Actor/Actress.

"Thank you all so much, this is amazing!" exclaimed the perfectly poised teen. "It's such an honor, such a privilege to be here. I didn't even imagine I would get this, but...I have!"
Though he didn't take home a trophy for the fifth time, Leonardo DiCaprio looked smashing in his awards show duds and graciously joined George Harrison's widow, Olivia, and Bob Dylan (massive standing ovation for the glowering living legend!) in honoring Martin Scorsese with the second annual Music + Film Award.
You know, because Scorsese's soundtracks are almost as iconic as his films, and the deftness with which he uses music to enrich his storytelling is nonpareil.
Clooney was the in-house humanitarian chosen to present Sean Penn with the Joel Siegel Award for the epic work he's done in Haiti since the 2010 earthquake.

"I want to thank the example of Joel Siegel and George Clooney," Penn said via satellite from—where else?—Haiti. "And watching the clips of Martin Scorsese's films, I was reminded that great filmmaking is truly a humanitarian act, and the people of Haiti embrace that, and they embrace the work that the committed among you do. And so I'm here as somebody who often says, ‘Tell it to a humanitarian.' Many of you know me and know that's the last likely description of me, but it's the absolute description of the people behind me."
And since he was thousands of miles away, it wasn't too awkward for the next presenter, Penn's ex-wife Robin Wright, to get down to business

Yes, congratulations George on a well-deserved award. I was actually clapping my hands when I heard he won and looked around to make sure no one was watching. LOL
Congratulations also to Viola Davis who was so moved by winning her award she was crying. I thought the show itself was a tad boring (with the two dorky announcers) and it wasn't until 7 minutes before the award show was over they brought in George to present for Sean Penn. Lots of commercial ads before, smart thinking on their part.
Looking forward to Golden Globes with Ricky Gervais. That should be a blast.

Re: George Clooney wins Best Actor award + presents Joel Siegel Award at Critics Choice Awards
Here's what surprises me. I just watched one of the videos a ways back on this thread. George and Stacy are on the red carpet, talking to a reporter and he answers a question and calls her by name. I think we have talked before about how he never refers to the current gf (whichever one it is at the time) by name. It's always her, she, my girlfriend, or just somebody I picked up.
I'm not sure what it means but I think it's interesting. I'm not saying it's a love match by any means, but they do seem to get along ok in public appearances ( more than in private candids, like vacations). Maybe it's because she does know her way around a mic and red carpet, is pretty drama free, eager to please him (I think anyway) and that makes the appearances easier and more relaxed for him. He just looks more comfortable to me. Not in love, just more relaxed and not worried about what is going to happen next.

George Clooney Teases Brad Pitt 'Death Match' At Critics' Choice Awards
'Descendants' star, who bested his buddy for Best Actor, also talks politics with MTV News.

It's a pretty good week when you get the chance to talk to George Clooney once. But God bless awards season, because just a few days after catching up with the "Descendants" star on the New York red carpet at the National Board of Review, we snagged some time with him again Thursday (January 12) in Los Angeles at the Critics' Choice Movie Awards.
As always, the guy was utterly charming. Can't wait for the Golden Globes this Sunday! We can't say the same for Clooney, who isn't exactly impressed these days by all the awards-season hubbub.
"The truth is, I think awards are always a very nice thing, in particular in helping films that are small continue to be made, because they are hard to get made," he told MTV News. "There was a time when I was younger that the idea of them was intimidating and the idea of these kinds of shows was intimidating, and now it's just fun, because I get to see people I like that I don't get to see very often."
Of more interest for Clooney is the political horserace rather than the Hollywood one. "There's been a pretty fun debate in the Republican Party; I've enjoyed watching. I'm sad it's coming to a close," he admitted. "I'm a Democrat, so there are things that are fun about it. Listen, they're going to find a guy, and it looks like it's going to be Mitt Romney, and then away we go."
That's a much more entertaining prospect than facing off against his Hollywood friends — guys like "Moneyball" star Brad Pitt, whom he's been faux-battling all awards season. Clooney triumphed this time around, besting his pal for Best Actor at the CCMAs.
"I'm sure there's a death match," he joked of the Clooney-vs.-Pitt hype in the media. "Look, he's my buddy, so everything that happens that's good for him makes me very happy."

The interviewer really made a faux pas with the younger man comment and I like the way Stacy stepped in and diverted the conversation.

@Cindigirl
What did the interviewer say? And how did Stacy intervene?
Unfortunately MTV is unable to offer this video to users in my region.

Hi Sad, the interviewer said "were awards more important to you as a young man?" Oops. Stacy intervened by grabbing the mic and saying "How are you George". IMO truly a sore subject for George. I think the interviewer was a little nervous.

Thank you, Cindigirl. Yes his age is really a sore subject for George, one of the reasons why he is dating younger women

I know that to a lot of us she makes him look smaller and older but I would love to know what he sees when he looks at a pic or in a mirror at the two of them. Sometimes we see ourselves way differently than others do.

Cinderella, he could wear shoe lifts and maybe large shoulder pads. Shoulder pads to make his shoulders look as wide as Stacy's. Just a thought.

Re: George Clooney wins Best Actor award + presents Joel Siegel Award at Critics Choice Awards
No, I am not kidding. Yes, Stacy makes him look older although she looks older than her age (next to me he would look like my grandpa) and any other woman around her age would make him look older too. But he doesn't accept his own age and wants to prove that he has still got "it". JMOcindigirl wrote:Well, now I know you're kidding. Stacy makes him look older and yes, smaller.

Sorry Sad, I really thought you were kidding or being sarcastic. Actually, the "it" he has is power and money. I really don't think the average 32 (or whatever) age woman would go out with a 50 year old man.

No, "it" for youth and vitality. You are right, the average 32 wouldn't go out with a 50 year old but the queue would be very long for George Clooney. That's why I expect from him more responsibility.
George you don't have to prove it. We know it.

Re: George Clooney wins Best Actor award + presents Joel Siegel Award at Critics Choice Awards
I had the chance and dated a billionaire in my late 20's. He was my parents age... In the end, I just couldn't do it. Not for all the money in the world. I wouldn't date a man just for the prestige and money. He was good looking, too. Wined and dined me. But we were so different in age, it didn't mesh. But, that's me.
