Clooney to attend Obama fundraiser in Geneva
(AFP) – 4 hours ago
GENEVA — US film star George Clooney was expected Monday in Geneva at a fundraiser for US President Barack Obama's re-election campaign, Democrats Abroad said.
The group's co-president Charles Adams is organising the event, Democrats Abroad said on its website.
Swiss media said the evening event was limited to US citizens and would begin with a champagne reception for 150 people donating $1,000 (800 euros) each, followed by a dinner for 50 costing $20,000 a head or $30,000 per couple.
The daily Le Matin said Clooney wanted to ride his Harley-Davidson from Lake Como in northern Italy where he has a home, but that organisers preferred him to avoid what they consider a risky journey and travel to Geneva in a chauffeur-driven car instead.
In May, some 150 donors met at the actor's home in support of the US president, and he held a fundraiser in Geneva in 2008, when Obama won his current term in office.

"Risky"? Since when has Switzerland been risky? I'm assuming the chauffer driven car will be on the same roads the motorbike would. Perhaps they're hoping to get him drunk that night?

Re: George Clooney to visit Geneva for Obama fundraiser on 27th August
I don't understand the "risky" part either. It isn't like he's a government official. And this article says that he and his girlfriend will arrive in an "escorted" chaffeured limousine. "Escorted???" Seriously???
(AGI)Geneva-A mega-party will be held in Geneva for Barack Obama's election campaign that is expected to raise up to 500,000 Dlrs. The event is organized by none other than Hollywood star George Clooney, an old-dated fan of the Democratic President who resides on Lake Como with his new girlfriend Stacy Keibler. He had originally planned to go to the Swiss city on his Harley Davidson but then, for security reasons, he had to change his plans and therefore he and his girlfriend are due to arrive in Geneva Monday evening on an escorted chauffeur-driven car. . .

Re: George Clooney to visit Geneva for Obama fundraiser on 27th August
@Cindi ...discouraging voters is exactly what the billionaires want to do or confuse and overwhelm them with inaccurate information. DON'T let them win! They're also trying to suppress the vote and many states have passed new voter id laws which amount to poll taxes. The goal is to try to discourage the poor and the elderly, mostly people of color, who don't own cars, so they don't have driver's licenses. It's costly to try to get to a DMV when you have to travel by bus and many of the elderly don't have their documents in order, so they have to pay for copies. It's really shameful the way they are trying to suppress voters rights, yet they will boast about our "democracy" and tout our voting privileges in the Middle East and to the rest of the world, trying to force our way of life on everyone else but they seem to forget those are the very same rights that they're trying so hard to subvert in this election!
Most voting models suggest that unemployment over 8% is the biggest factor in any reelection campaign and it's not favorable to the President currently but that could still change as late as October. BUT this election is MORE about the "great divide" in this country between the 1%, who have been florishing all along and the decimated middle class, elderly and the poor who have seen their wages decline and wealth disappear along with their pensions, as Wall Street plays games with our future. And now the Republican Party wants to revisit the "voucher system" with both Social Security and Medicare despite the fact that when Bush tried to push for that change it was met with a resounding NO throughout the country.
And THAT is what gives me hope that they can spend a kajillion dollars trying to buy this election BUT the people are not going to fall for the lies anymore. They know we can't go back to the Bush policies which is what the Ryan Budget is predicated upon only on STEROIDS and there's no way anyone wants them to play with Medicare and Social Security. Not even their own party wants that.

Re: George Clooney to visit Geneva for Obama fundraiser on 27th August
It worries me that money is so important in US politics. I had no idea that it was the richest candidate who wins. That kind of makes me sick.
Obviously not being American and living in Asia I don't have strong opinions on who wins [other than the knock on effect US political outlook has on the entire planet] but I find it a concern how much money comes into it.
I'm kind of glad that George is helping the poorer candidate raise money so there can be something of a fair fight.

Lighterside, a greenie for you. Any yes, Katie, it's about who can raise the most money in American politics, which is why so many people are so disillusioned with our political system.

Re: George Clooney to visit Geneva for Obama fundraiser on 27th August
When the current Supreme Court passed "Citizens United", the landscape was changed as far as election contributions are concerned. Corporations can now give money to candidates. Lighterside is on the money as far as the 1%. That (and corporations) is where the money will come from, and the candidate with the most money does indeed stand the best chance of being elected. Katie, it's not necessarily the richest candidate, but the candidate who garners the most contributions, who stands the best chance of winning. AND . . . It's not direct contributions to the candidate always. Political advertising paid for by PACs and not by candidates is also very influential (and very expensive).

tzizz...I was going to go into the whole Citizen's United situation, where the majority neoconservative leaning Supreme Court issued a proclamation that "corporations are people" and therefore could participate in "buying" our elections for their favorite candidate. I was afraid of getting too partisan but I'm glad you did!

I completely agree with you premiere. Something I'm afraid of is that if the Republicans get into the white house this country could become a nation of either the very rich or the very poor. A standard that existed a long time ago but could very easily return.

Thank you for the Dr. Seuss, Lighterside! Women's issues are so important and are being ignored (or worse) by the Republicans. Women worked so hard in the '60s and '70s, and now those rights are being slowly but surely chipped away at. (Hmmm -- never end a sentence with a preposition . . . oh well, rules are made to be broken)
And, Cindigirl, I couldn't agree with you more.

Clooney star guest at Obama fundraiser in Switzerland
By Stephanie Nebehay | Reuters – 3 hrs ago
GENEVA (Reuters) - George Clooney is the star attraction on Monday in what is being billed as the Democratic Party's biggest fundraising event abroad aimed at helping President Barack Obama win re-election.
The American actor and activist, who travelled by car from his residence on Lake Como, Italy, arrived in Geneva's Old Town ahead of a private reception followed by a gala dinner.
About $500,000 could be raised for Obama's campaign coffers as he battles to keep pace with the fundraising of his rival, Republican Mitt Romney, sources close to Obama's campaign said.
At least 100 American supporters paid $1,000 each to attend the champagne reception being held in a museum, while about 35 high-rolling donors paid $15,000 a plate for the gourmet dinner with Clooney, the sources said.
Democrats Abroad Switzerland, the U.S. party's Swiss branch, said in a statement the event was expected to be the "single most important fundraising event" outside the United States for Obama's campaign.
Some participants said it would be the Democrats' biggest fundraising event abroad to date.
Clooney, 51, was to address the gathering, along with Matthew Barzun, chairman of the Obama Victory Fund, and organizer Charles Adams, a Geneva-based American lawyer on the National Finance Committee of the campaign who declined comment.
Supporters willing to pay $5,000 get to have their photograph taken with the Hollywood star and director - who was not accompanied by his latest girlfriend Stacy Keibler.
"OUTSPENT AND OUTRAISED"
Clooney hosted a glitzy campaign fundraiser at his home in Los Angeles in May, raising nearly $15 million at the event where Obama called his endorsement of same-sex marriage a "logical extension" of his vision for the country.
The Geneva fundraiser is a virtual carbon copy of one attended here by Clooney four years ago that raked in hundreds of thousands of dollars to help take Obama to the White House.
Obama's campaign to win re-election in the November 6 poll has struggled to match the enthusiasm of his 2008 run and compete financially with the hundreds of millions of dollars being raised by conservative outside groups known as super-PACs.
In July, Romney and his Republican Party raised $101 million, outpacing Obama for the third month in a row. Obama and the Democrats hauled in $75 million.
Romney and his party said they had $186 million left in cash on hand at the end of July - almost $60 million more than Obama and his party, who had $127 million left in cash on hand, disclosures filed last week showed.
"We're being outspent and outraised. It's everyone to their battle stations, we've got to keep the playing field as level as possible," a participant at the Geneva fundraiser told Reuters. "Clooney has made himself available to an extent above and beyond the call of duty."
Tropical Storm Isaac forced Republicans on Sunday to postpone the start of the Republican National Convention being held this week in Tampa, Florida, where the party will officially nominate Romney as their candidate.

George Clooney's dedication to U.S. President Barack Obama's re-election campaign knows no bounds.
The Hollywood heartthrob took his Oscar-winning smile to Switzerland today for a fund-raising event to rally support for Obama's battle with Republican Mitt Romney in November's Presidential election.
Supporters flew in from around the world to attend the Geneva event, which was sponsored by Americans Abroad for Obama, and donated a total of $625,000 (£395,000),
it may not seem such an impressive sum, but it adds to the $15 million the actor gathered when he hosted a fundraising event at his Los Angeles home in May.
To date, Obama boasts a campaign kitty of around $300 million, compared to rival Romney's $155 million.
Guests at Monday's fundraiser paid $15,000 per person to dine with Clooney, $5,000 for a photo with him and $1,000 to attend a reception that took place before dinner.
The party took place at the lavish home of American lawyer Charles C. Adams Jr, overlooking Lake Geneva.
Clooney didn't have to travel as far as many of Monday's guests - Geneva is a mere hop, skip and jump from his summer home on neighbouring Italy's Lake Com
The Ocean's Eleven star forged close ties with Obama when the president was still a senator and they were both campaigning to end the conflict in Darfur, Sudan.
Clooney's May fundraiser attracted a raft of A-list celebrities, including Robert Downey Jr, Barbara Streisand and Tobey Maguire, who all paid $40,000 per head to rub shoulders with the president.
The epic bash, nicknamed, 'Starmageddon' by the political press, eclipsed the $11 million raised for Mr Obama by a Barbara Streisand concert and dinner in 2008.
Latest poll figures place Obama and Romney virtually neck and neck, with Romney on 47 per cent and the incumbent slightly behind on 46 per cent.

George Clooney suited up to attend a special fundraiser for Barack Obama's reelection campaign in Switzerland last night. He signed autographs and posed with waiting fans on his way into the event, which was just his latest show of support for the president. George hosted a dinner at his Hollywood home in May that raised $15 million for Obama with the help of other famous faces.
George broke from his relaxing Summer in Lake Como for the Swiss function. He's been vacationing there with girlfriend Stacy Keibler on and off since June. They've both made trips back to LA and elsewhere, though, and have also invited friends to join them in the Italian city. George and Stacy played host to Channing Tatum and Jenna Dewan and were also spotted boating with pal Karen Duffy.

Wonder what that young man in grey tee was saying to our dear GTC? He and his guards do not look happy. But in all the other pics he looks great.

Probably didn't pay the 5 grand and was trying to get a picture of himself with George! HA!
Isn't that his hand on the camera on his right? (Left side of the picture?)
