Re: Supreme court over turns Roe Vs Wade
PAN - I'm curious. How much is the automatic NHS cover? Is it the same for everyone, or is it on a sliding scale based on income? You say there are GPs offices that treat anyone who needs care. Are those like our urgent care clinics, where you can walk in if you aren't well or have been hurt? You still have to have insurance, though - although in NY, a hospital emergency room can't refuse treatment. I don't know how they handle the billing for indigent or uninsured patients.
Here there are doctors who don't accept Medicare or other forms of insurance. Is that the case in the UK as well? Are there doctors who only accept direct payment from patients?
I'm sorry to hit you with all these questions, but your system seems so much more civilised and logical.

The covid vaccines are free here in the US so insurance is not the reason for our lack of success here.party animal - not! wrote:Ps That's why the vaccine rollout was so successful here.......
The people I've spoken to who haven't gotten them are very distrustful of the government (ie..they think they are implanting microchips) or they are worried about having a reaction or long term side effects.
My employer (a hospital) really leans on us to get vaccinated regularly (for covid and flu) but I would get them regardless of my job. I code covid charts regularly and it's nothing I want to play with. Unfortunately the internet makes everyone a medical expert.

Ida - I'd like to thank you. Working in the health care field the last couple of years must have been especially challenging. I can understand people whose immune systems are challenged being hesitant to get vaccinated, but the conspiracy theory nuts make me want to smack them upside the head. I don't know how you deal with them on a regular basis without going crazy.
My concern is that this could carry over to other vaccines as well, which could lead to a resurgence of diseases like mumps, measles and the like. They've been gone so long people have forgotten how dangerous they can be.

My first 25 years of employment were doing direct patient care. This past 14 years, I've been a computer jockey so no thanks are needed. Lol.LizzyNY wrote:Ida - I'd like to thank you. Once the pandemic hit, I started working from home and I will probably remain here since I only have a few years left to work.
I've only dealt with covid through coding medical charts, except when my friend died from it and my cousin & friend had to be intubated for a month because they got pneumonia and respiratory failure from it.
Things are definitely getting better since the vaccines rolled out but I'm still seeing some unfortunate people die from Covid despite being vaccinated 4 times! Most of them have underlying conditions that make them high risk but its sad that the vaccines don't always work 100%. Still, I don't see the same amount of people pouring into the hospital that I did that first horrible year, so for that I am thankful. It was very mentally distressing seeing how sick some of them were and then you have aholes out there claiming Covid is fake and the medical staff are making it all up. You just can't argue with that level of stupidity.
But yes, with the exception of a few legit individuals, I don't have much much tolerance for the anti-vax crowd. The older I get, the less tolerant I am of lots of BS. I'm a big anti- smoking fanatic and I rejoiced when they made it illegal to smoke in restaurants here. I never used to care about smoking until I watched my best friends dad get laryngeal cancer from it. He had to get a tracheostomy and then he continued to smoke though his trach until he died a most gruesome death. Smoking is addictive just like drugs and I need to get off my anti- smoking soap box now.
I totally understand people's apprehension with new vaccines. I'm not normally first in line for new drugs myself. However, after watching what happened in China and Italy (before Covid hit the US), I was petrified at the potential devastation we were facing. I was watching my nurse and tech coworkers catch it and be out a month, which really hurt the staffing at the hospital. They had to cancel elective surgeries and pull OR staff to other areas of the hospital to handle the overflow People just have no idea of the strain Covid put on the health care system & I was heartbroken when I saw Facebook photos of my friends partying it up during the lock down.
And yes, we are already seeing a resurgence of diseases like whooping cough, mumps & measles due to the anti-vax crowd. It amazes me that my friends think they know more than the scientists at the CDC.

Ida - I don't care what you say, you working on coding may have freed someone else up to work the front lines. so I'll still say "Thank you!".
I often wonder how many of these anti-vaxxers, especially the ones with children, were actually vaccinated themselves back when we actually believed doctors. I bet most of them have had the polio vaccine, and probably measles, mumps and rubella shots, too. I wonder what scared them so much that they won't extend the same protection to their children. And why on earth would they think some random online talking head is qualified to give medical advice? It boggles the mind.

Re: Supreme court over turns Roe Vs Wade
I think the rise in autism and celebrity anti-vaxxers like Jenny McCarthy really made people think twice about vaccines. I can't say I totally blame them, as some vaccines *have* made people sick in the past.
I'm not convinced about the autism/vaccine link but I've seen people get Guillain Barre (a neurological disease) following certain vaccinations. I remember when the old flu shots used to be a (weakened) live virus and some people got the flu from them. So I get why people are distrustful to a certain extent. No one wants to be a guinea pig.
The internet hasn't helped things any. I used to think the internet was great in that ideas could be shared globally and instantly. I never considered that the uninformed would try to discredit the educated and have an equal voice. So the wonderful potential of the internet has been ruined by stupid people who can't be bothered to do a little research before flapping their mouth online.

Ida - It's always been my understanding that injections of live viruses were meant to get your immune system to build up resistance to the virus and, eventually, immunity.
Less scientific, but sort of in the same vein, when I was a kid if one of us got sick (measles, mumps - that sort of thing) we'd all be sent to visit in hopes we would get sick, too, and we'd all get it over with at once. Living in Pittsburgh, we were also the "guinea pigs" for the polio vaccine. I think that must have been one of the first vaccines given to kids on a national scale. I wonder if parents were as concerned about that as they are now about the covid vaccine.

Pregnant Woman Contests HOV Ticket by Saying Fetus Is Passenger After Roe v. Wade Decision
"I will be fighting it," said Brandy Bottone, a pregnant woman from Plano, Texas who was given a $215 HOV ticket despite people defining her fetus as a life
By Glenn GarnerJuly 09, 2022 09:21 PM
FA Texas woman is turning the tables on anti-abortion lawmakers after receiving a $215 traffic ticket.
Brandy Bottone of Plano was 34 weeks pregnant when she told Dallas County Sheriff Department officers that her unborn fetus counts as a passenger and therefore gives her the right to use the carpool lane.
"I pointed to my stomach and said, 'My baby girl is right here. She is a person,'" Bottone recounted telling the officer when she was pulled over at a checkpoint for driving in the HOV lane on June 29, according to The Dallas Morning News.
She made her point following the Supreme Court's decision to overturn 1973's Roe v. Wade and the constitutional right to abortion.

Battone said the cop told her the HOV lane requires two passengers, meaning "two people outside of the body." According to the Texas penal code, the term "'Individual' means a human being who is alive, including an unborn child at every stage of gestation from fertilization until birth."
DSPD did not immediately respond to PEOPLE's request for comment.

"One officer kind of brushed me off when I mentioned this is a living child, according to everything that's going on with the overturning of Roe v. Wade," she continued. "'So I don't know why you're not seeing that,' I said.
"He was like, 'I don't want to deal with this.' He said, 'Ma'am, it means two persons outside of the body.' He waved me on to the next cop who gave me a citation and said, 'If you fight it, it will most likely get dropped,'" Bottone added.
Bottone claims the ticket was "written to cause inconvenience," adding: "This has my blood boiling. How could this be fair? According to the new law, this is a life. I know this may fall on deaf ears, but as a woman, this was shocking."
Her court date is set for July 20, and she said, "I will be fighting it."
Meanwhile, President Joe Biden has doubled down on his pro-choice support, signing an executive order to ensure access to abortion and the "safety of patients, providers, and third parties" on Friday.
"I'm asking the Justice Department that, much like they did in the Civil Rights era, to do everything in their power to protect these women seeking to invoke their rights," Biden, 79, said Friday.

Last month's 6-to-3 ruling reversed nearly 50 years of precedent, giving states the power to pass their own laws around abortion. Arkansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Missouri and South Dakota are among those that have already banned abortion in their states, after putting trigger laws in place that governors enacted following the SCOTUS ruling.
Protests have since erupted around the country, and Biden has spoken out against the ruling, which he called the "realization of an extreme ideology and a tragic error by the Supreme Court."
The decision comes after the SCOTUS opinion was leaked to Politico in May. A poll conducted by CNN has since found that 66 percent of Americans did not want Roe v. Wade to be overturned.
Texas passed its own highly restrictive anti-abortion law last year. Referred to as the "heartbeat ban," the legislation prohibits the procedure after a fetal heartbeat can be detected, the earliest being six weeks which is before most people know they are pregnant.

Re: Supreme court over turns Roe Vs Wade
Pardon my language, but this sh*t show just keeps getting better and better. If it didn't have such serious repercussions for so many women it would be hilarious. I hope this ruling helps Stacy Abrams and Raphael Warnock in Georgia.
Kansas just proved that the GOP may have over-estimated how much crap the women of this country will take before they fight back. Matt Gaetz went after Olivia Juliana, a 19 year old abortion activist in Texas, because he didn't think she was attractive enough to ever need an abortion. She used his attacks to raise over $2 million for abortion access funds in 2 days - and she's still going. Every time someone criticizes her, more people donate. It's brilliant!
Kansas is a fairly conservative state. If they refused to ban abortion it bodes well for rulings in other states. Whether through the courts or the ballot box, this fight is far from over.

Kansas abortion vote: Major victory for pro-choice groups

The conservative US state of Kansas has decided in a referendum to protect abortion rights - in a major victory for pro-choice groups.
Voters overwhelmingly said they did not wish to amend the state constitution to assert there is no right to abortion.
It was the first electoral test of the issue since the US Supreme Court allowed states to ban the procedure.
If the ballot had gone the other way, lawmakers could have moved to further restrict or ban abortion in Kansas.
The ballot question in Kansas had been hotly anticipated since the US Supreme Court two months ago overturned Roe v Wade, the 1973 ruling that legalised abortion nationwide.
Projections suggest Kansans voted by more than 60% to uphold the state's constitutional right for women to access abortion.
It's just a projection for now, and the official result will be confirmed in a week.
When Roe v Wade was overturned, President Joe Biden said abortion rights would be an issue for the voters. What's happened in Kansas has turned that theory into evidence.
The referendum result is being seen as a landslide, in a state that Republican former-President Donald Trump won by a convincing margin just two years ago.
For Democrats and pro-choice groups, this is a sign that Americans are deeply unhappy with abortion rights being overturned - and see the Supreme Court's decision as out of step with the public.
The US holds national mid-term elections on 8 November, with Democrats fighting to retain control of Congress.
Media caption,
Watch: Kansas voters celebrate a pro-choice majority in the state's referendum

Mr Biden said the result showed "the majority of Americans agree that women should have access to abortion".
One voter, Taylor Hirth, wept as she celebrated the result with her nine-year-old daughter at a watch party in Overland Park, Kansas.
"I'm a rape survivor, and the thought of my daughter ever becoming pregnant and not being able to do anything about it angers me," she told the BBC.
"I never thought this would happen here, but we have worked so hard here to get the vote out. Republicans underestimated us."
Value Them Both, a Kansas based anti-abortion group said that "Kansans endured an onslaught of misinformation from radical left organizations" over the past six months, that "spread lies" about the amendment.
"This outcome is a temporary setback, and our dedicated fight to value women and babies is far from over," a message on its Twitter page said.
Kansas officials said voter turnout across the state was significantly higher than expected on a primary voting day when Republicans usually outnumber Democrats by two to one.
With feelings running high in the month before the vote, a Catholic church and a statue of the Virgin Mary were defaced with red paint and a pro-choice slogan.
On the eve of the ballot, some Kansans had received misleading texts urging them to "vote yes" to protect choice, but the opposite was true - a "yes" vote was to take away access to abortion. Tech company Twilio said it had suspended the anonymous sender from its platform.
Although Kansas is staunchly conservative, its abortion regulations are less strict than many other Republican-led states.
It allows pregnancies to be terminated up to 22 weeks with other restrictions, including a mandatory 24-hour waiting period and mandatory parental consent for children.
The legislature of the Great Plains state is controlled by anti-abortion Republicans, but its politically vulnerable governor, Laura Kelly, is a Democrat. She had warned that changing the state constitution would throw Kansas "back into the dark ages".
More than a dozen Republican-led states have moved to ban or further restrict abortion since the Supreme Court decision on 24 June.
But 10 states across the US, including Kansas, have the right to abortion enshrined in their state constitutions, provisions that can only be overturned through referendums.
Other states, like California and Vermont, are holding votes in November seeking to enhance protections to abortion in their state constitutions.

- ON THE GROUND: The state where abortion is on the ballot

President Joe Biden Signs Second Executive Order Protecting Access to Abortion

The executive abortion aims at making it easier for patients to travel across state lines to receive abortion services
President Joe Biden has signed his second executive order to protect access to reproductive healthcare services in response to the Supreme Court's decision to overturn Roe v. Wade.
The executive order, which Biden signed Wednesday during the inaugural meeting of the administration's recently established Task Force on Reproductive Healthcare Access, is aimed at making it easier for patients to travel across state lines to receive abortion services.
The order directs the Department of Health and Human Services to "consider action to advance access to reproductive healthcare services," including allowing the use of Medicaid funds for patients who travel out-of-state for the procedure. If HHS enacts that plan, states could apply for Medicaid waivers when they provide abortions to people from out of state.
It also calls on the HHS to ensure health care providers comply with federal non-discrimination laws when offering services.
This comes after a bill, the Ensuring Women's Right to Reproductive Freedom Act, to protect a patient's right to travel across state lines for abortion services, was blocked by the Republican-led Senate last month after passing the House of Representatives.

Executive orders are signed directives from the president, which don't require Congressional approval, that manage operations of the federal government.
Though Congress can't pass laws to overturn an executive order, it can pass legislation that makes it difficult, or even impossible, to carry out the order, for example by removing funding. An executive order can be revoked by the president who issued it and a president has the ability to revoke executive orders issued by a predecessor.

House of Representatives Passes Bills to Protect Access to Abortion After 'Roe v. Wade' Is Overturned
Biden has stated repeatedly that he doesn't have the authority as president to restore the right to abortion himself.
"The only way we can secure a woman's right to choose and the balance that existed is for Congress to restore the protections of Roe v. Wade as federal law," he previously explained. "No executive action from the president can do that."
Biden signed his first executive order related to abortion access in early July.
The order vowed to "ensure the safety of patients, providers, and third parties" who have abortions or provide abortion services.
Additionally, the order called on the HHS to submit a report detailing steps to take that can protect medication abortion, expand access to emergency contraceptives, and increase education about reproductive healthcare services.
At the time, Biden urged the American people to assert their political power by voting for their abortion rights in the upcoming November elections, stressing that political change is needed in order restore the rights lost by the overturn of Roe.
"I'm asking the Justice Department that, much like they did in the Civil Rights era, to do everything in their power to protect these women seeking to invoke their rights," Biden said.
