Is George Clooney positioning himself for a run at public office?

For years, George Clooney has taken a shine to Las Vegas. Five years ago, nightclub developer Rande Gerber and he announced plans for a retro Vegas resort, Las Ramblas, to open along Harmon Avenue just west of the Hard Rock Hotel. The $3 billion property was to be opened in 2008 but fell victim to the commercial construction slump that stopped several such ambitious projects.
Around that time, “Ocean’s Thirteen,” co-starring Clooney with a star-laden ensemble cast, premiered at Brenden Theaters at the Palms during CineVegas in 2007. And Clooney’s onetime girlfriend, Sarah Larson, was a cocktail waitress at Moon at that hotel.
I’m told, reliably, that Clooney was in serious talks with a business interest with ties to Las Vegas but abruptly pulled out of those discussions.
The reason? Clooney is positioning himself for a possible run at public office and prefers not to be linked to a business in the nightlife haven that is Las Vegas. Can’t readily say at what level Clooney would seek to serve, but he owns a residence in Los Angeles and is a progressive who supported President Obama in the 2008 election.
Clooney also has performed extensive humanitarian work in the war-ravaged Darfur region of Sudan. He has never been reluctant to share his views on politics or policy, but as recently as February was dismissive in discussing his political options despite overtures from the California Democratic Party.
If Clooney were to embark on a campaign for any public office, his decision would mark a change in his way of thinking about such a move. In a story that ran in February in Newsweek, Clooney acknowledged his history as one of Hollywood’s leading lotharios would be difficult to overcome.
“I didn’t live my life in the right way for politics, you know,” he told the magazine. “I (romanticized) too many chicks and did too many drugs, and that’s the truth.” He added that a smart campaigner “would start from the beginning by saying, ‘I did it all. I drank the bong water. Now let’s talk about issues.’ That’s gonna be my campaign slogan: ‘I drank the bong water’?”
Which render questions about inhaling, or not, moot.

Nice article LouisLane. In my humble opinion I think with everything he said he's done before he'd fit in very nicely in the political arena.
Points in his favor: He hasn't cheated on a wife, hasn't texted his genitals, doesn't have a gay lover IMO, hasn't fathered a child, hasn't swindled the government. I think he would be one of the "cleaner" candidates. Again IMO.

Very funny Dior, IMO what happens between two consenting adults is their business no matter what gender they are. George is more honest than a lot of politicians are and have been for decades. He's not cheating on his wife who is dying of cancer, nor is he having an affair with the maid and impregnating her and his wife at the same time.None of this is anyone's business but if you run for office in the US people do hold you to a certain moral standard, I'm just not sure if the majority of the voting public are ready for George and his honesty.

George running for office? Oh hell no! Not gonna happen.
Lucy - you are correct. You may remember articles from several years ago when George was being vilified by the American press and public for his outspoken opinions about the war etc.
Not disagreeing with his right to give those opinions but there are a lot of conservative people in the US that would NEVER vote for George.
George best serves in his current capacity as private citizen who has media attention and can bring it with him when he supports the causes that are important to him.

Oh, and speaking of aspirations of running for office a bit off topic here based on the subject of my comment... wasn't that one of the reasons Ben Affleck broke up with Jennifer Lopez? She would NEVER be accepted by the public as a politician's wife. But Jennifer Garner with her American Sweetheart look & probably background too -- certainly would.
And just to stay off topic for another sec - would Ben leave Jennifer for JLo if he had the opportunity and maybe didn't have the kids? See I think JLo was the love of Ben's life. JMO
Ok off the off topic! :-)

Even George admits he could never run for office and that shows an honesty a lot of pollies don't have. I think the J Lo thing has run it's course he seems happy with Jennifer Garner and they have two girls. Would Ben A really run his past is just as colourful as Georges!

Could we take Gee seriously as a candidate? I would be half expecting him to have a revolving bow tie or slap a "your a dick" message on someones back while kissing babies!!! The pressure would be unbareable, just look at Obama now, going grey and his face is quite thin. Don't want to see our Georgie go down that route!! Anyway, there's too much of Gee's bum out in the public domain, but then again, it's that what politicians do!!

It seems he's involved in a lot of politically themed films. I'm pretty sure he wouldn't want to run for office, but maybe this is his way of living vicariously through politics?

Exactly! He wants everyone to get involved, do some research and find out what changes are needed. Then change it! It’s kinda like Sudan, you see a wrong and you go about fixing it!
