8 stars whose box-office draw is nosediving

Tom Cruise

With an opening weekend take of $28 million, Tom Cruise’s new sci-fi film, “Edge of Tomorrow” — which debuted June 6 — did even worse than his last sci-fi movie, 2013’s “Oblivion.” In the last eight years, Cruise has had only one hit (2011’s “Mission: Impossible — Ghost Protocol”). It looks like he’s nearing the end of his run as a major movie star, though we’ll see how “Mission: Impossible 5” does when it comes out next year.
The 51-year-old is not alone in his midlife crisis: Here are seven more movie stars whose careers are in trouble.

Russell Crowe

It’s been over for Crowe, 50, for some time; “Noah,” spun as a hit, did only okay — $100 million in the US, which may cover the movie’s marketing costs, but won’t make much of a dent in the gargantuan production cost. The last time he was the leading attraction in a movie that made a lot of money was 2001, for “A Beautiful Mind.” (In 2007, “American Gangster” also did well, but Denzel Washington deserves the lion’s share of the credit.)
Audiences never really warmed to Crowe in the first place; “Gladiator” is the only other hit he’s ever had as a leading man. Compare that to his long string of flops: “Robin Hood,” “Body of Lies,” “State of Play,” “Cinderella Man,” “A Good Year,” “Proof of Life,” “The Insider,” etc.

George Clooney[/b

Hollywood still loves the 53-year-old — he’s got the lead role in next year’s sci-fi extravaganza “Tomorrowland,” directed by “Mission: Impossible — Ghost Protocol’s” Brad Bird. Entertainment journalists still love him. But do audiences, really? If you don’t count his small role in “Gravity,” Clooney’s never had a big moneymaker, apart from the three “Ocean’s” movies and 2000’s “The Perfect Storm” — in which he was the third banana behind Mark Wahlberg and a bigass wave.

Colin Farrell

The spectacular failure of this year’s “Winter’s Tale” and 2012’s “Total Recall” remake have driven home the point that nobody cares about Colin Farrell, 38.
Every movie in which he’s been top-billed has flopped.
Every one.

Adam Sandler

Gross-out comedies don’t cost very much, so Sandler’s movies only need to do okay to turn a profit. The problem is, except for “Grown Ups” and its sequel, there’s a steady downward trend for the performance of the 47-year-old’s comedies, and they’re starting to lose money.
“Blended,” his latest, is losing millions.

Johnny Depp

He can do no wrong with the “Pirates” movies — the last one earned over a billion dollars — but the failure of “Transcendence,” “The Lone Ranger,” “Dark Shadows,” “The Rum Diary” and “The Tourist” doesn’t bode well.
Perhaps Depp, 51, can bounce back with the musical “Into the Woods,” due at Christmas, or the Whitey Bulger movie “Black Mass,” due next year. His best bet, though, is the “Alice in Wonderland” sequel, “Through the Looking Glass,” in 2016.

Vince Vaughn

It turns out, playing the same character every time can catch up to you. Vaughn, 44, is riding a string of four flops going back to 2009’s “Couples Retreat.” Next February, he’ll be seen in a comedy that is as yet untitled, but he’s getting too old to play the fast-talking young schemer.

Matt Damon

The “Bourne” and “Ocean’s” franchises were great while they lasted, but Damon couldn’t sell audiences on “Hereafter,” “The Adjustment Bureau,” “We Bought a Zoo,” “Promised Land” or “Elysium.”
Now, the 43-year-old’s got an empty acting schedule.

Funny, George is no doubt the leading man in Oceans and Perfect Storm, and his small films rarely flop.

This is holidaytime codswallop isn't it?

I can see where they're going with some of them, but not one of them is suffering.

I think it all depends on what they're prepared to do and what they want to do, and whether they're suitable for that role (obviously).

Some of them want to direct/produce anyway, and take time off e g Matt Damon before he starts again in September, and things like Promised Land were exactly what he wanted to do.......

I think the real list is possibly three long....but most of these actors can get greenlight from the studios for anything they want to do - or fund it themselves

There are three names there that've never heard of...
Farrell....Sandler....Vaughn.

Mind that's not saying much as I never go to cinemas
any longer and I have a very limited taste
in films anyway. LOL.

PS...the link doesn't tally with the text above.
It looks like a non important web site anyway.

Considering the amount of work George has lined up I'm not worried about his career. He's doing just what he wants to do. Very Happy

Joanna - Farrell, Sandler and Vaughn make stupid, mind -numbing "comedies" aimed at arrested-development adolescents. Count yourself lucky that you've never heard of them.

PS -I read this article in the NY Post a while back. I think it was written as filler on a slow day.

Lizzy, I know Farrell and Sandler and have seen some of their films. Actually I really like Farrell's Phone Booth. Heard In Bruges was very good, but I found it boring and quit halfway. Should I finish watching it next time? To be honest, I once quit watching Michael Clayton and Sideways, but I found them gripping and dramatic in second half. Brad Bird highly recommended In Bruges on Twitter. So far I've only seen one and na half of Farrell's films.
I've always heard and seen Sandler poping up in the press, never seen one of his works. But they're doing well in boxoffice, aren't they?
Never heard of Vince Vaughn though.
Same as you, I read this article somewhere months ago, thinking it was from some ignorant blogger or geek... kinda surprised by its NY post source. Maybe you know them better from all those years.

It's an interesting point of view and if you limit the evaluation only to stars who can't (won't?) make big blockbuster type of films, then it's kind of accurate. But as far as George is concerned, that's missing the point. He's not trying to woo millions into the cinema with 3D explosions and heavy marketing; what he does is small to medium scale films that appeal to a small number of people, but enough to make a profit.

IMO George doesn't belong in this list as, since Batman tanked, he's chosen not to compete in these big league films.

I really liked Mark Wahlberg in The Perfect Storm too. His love story with Christina (Diana Lane) is so sweet. I think this film had a lot of good actors. And George looked his best, of course I was hoping for a little more action between him and the woman whose name I can't spell, Mary Elizabeth M.

I also really like Russel Crowe. And I don't care that George don't like him.

Mark was quite good in The Fighter, Lone Survival,Perfect Storm, Three Kings... I couldn't figure out why he chose to star in the stupid Michael Bay's new Transformers though. That film just broke every boxoffice record in China, pulling off an unbelievable $300+ million here-way more than its domestic numbers!

Sevens - Mark Wahlberg probably did the movie to make money. Those tent-pole blockbusters pay pretty well.

I get the feeling that this writer did this entire thing just so he could get off the "... bigass wave" line. George Clooney as third banana in Perfect Storm...? What movie did this guy see?

Tom Cruise is making better movies now than he has in, like, forever. It's his reputation that's hurting him at the box office.

The Insider (Russell Crowe) was an excellent movie that didn't get nearly enough credit. Other than that I agree with this writer, whoever he is.

Colin Farrell was tagged as the next dreamboat movie star after he did Minority Report (with, coincidentally, Tom Cruise). He said he didn't care about being a big leading man action star, but he kept taking parts in movies that sure made it seem like he did. But he is absolutely perfect in a small part in Crazy Heart, and In Bruges is one of only a few violent movies I can watch, largely because of him. I think he's doing exactly what he wants now.

The only questionable choices Matt Damon has made, to me, were Green Zone and Adjustment Bureau. (I didn't see Hereafter.) Elysium was released and marketed poorly. None of the rest were meant to big movies.

The writer is right about Depp; Sandler turned himself from a legit comedian into a (billionaire) hack comic; and Vince Vaughn definitely needs to choose better material.

JMHO.

I liked Tom's latest "Edge of Tomorrow" and "Oblivion" wasn't bad - it kept my attention which is more than I can say for a lot of other films lately.

Interestingly, I just checked out Tom's IMDB page.

He's got Mission Impossible 5 in pre-production and Top Gun 2 and Jack Reacher 2 have been announced.

Built in audience for Top Gun 2 so hopefully the long awaited sequel won't disappoint.

I watched "Hereafter". I really liked it. Directed by Clint Eastwood. I like Eastwood's movies.
I watched Elysium too (normally not my choice of movies) but I liked that too.

About Depp...I think it is kind of sad after those pirate movies that he has chosen so many other movies hiding behind a mask and tried to be funny. And the movie Transcendence, I never really heard about.

To be honest I had to laugh about the end of the sentence with "George being the third banana...after the bigass wave"  Razz

At the beginning I didn't know if the writer is just joking but some points as you pointed out too Way2old4dis sounded right.

About Tom Cruise...Way2old4dis, do you mean with "his reputation" that he belongs to Scientology? I thought the sect is so powerful they can control that?

Top Gun 2 really...I liked the first one..Wonder how the second part will be. I would watch it too  Very Happy

Edge of Tomorrow is really good and my friend and I laughed many times in cinema. Also enjoy Emily Blunt's performance. Tom's reputation never hurts him in Asia as almost everyone loves him. Way more popular than George.

I've liked a lot of Tom Cruise's recent films. Johnny Depp seems to be recycling captain Jack Sparrow a little too much but I live in hope he'll go back to making more interesting films. I liked the Rum Diaries.

As for Vince Vaughn, was he ever a superstar?

Johnny Depp is currently in Massachusetts filming a movie about Whitey Bulger who was on the FBI's most wanted list for decades, and was captured in CA.  A book was written about him  The Winter Hill Gang.  Very disturbing.

By the way, have seen photos of Johnny Depp in wardrobe and make-up.  The wardrobe and make-up people are geniuses, looks just like Whitey.  BTW, Johnny has played imprompt at Boston concerts of late, including Willie Nelson.  Just shows up with guitar in hand and gets on stage.  Story is, he's pretty good.
