I saw this article. Does this type of thing happen often? And what does it mean?

A Hulu series in the U.S., Catch-22 stars Clooney, Kyle Chandler and Hugh Laurie and is based on the 1961 satirical novel by Joseph Heller. Christopher Abbott takes the lead as Air Force Capt. John Yossarian.
The show is already set for Sky Italia in Italy and Channel 4 in the U.K.
Clooney will executive produce the six-part series, as well as star in it. The Oscar winner was originally set for the large role as Yossarian’s commander Col. Cathcart, but reduced his screen time to focus on producing duties and will direct two episodes. That role was taken over by Chandler, while Clooney has a smaller part as training commander Scheisskopf, who is more obsessed with parades and “winning” than military service.
The World War II-set novel follows the story of Capt. Yossarian and is famed for its circular storytelling style. It takes on the absurd rules the main character must face in his quest to go home, when he must complete a certain number of missions in order to be granted leave. Flying missions is considered insane, while at the same time requesting removal from duty is evidence of sanity and therefore makes one ineligible to be relived from duty. Yossarian faces these changing goal posts and a bureaucratic nightmare throughout the novel. The story is so absurd that the title has become synonymous with a paradoxical and unwinnable situation.
The series is produced by Paramount Television and Anonymous Content. Clooney reunites with longtime partner Grant Heslov (Ides of March, Good Night and Good Luck) for his Smokehouse Pictures banner, with co-writers Luke Davies (Lion) and David Michod (War Machine). Oscar-nominated documentary filmmaker Ellen Kuras will produce and direct episodes three and four.
The series is currently shooting in Italy.

Yes, Ladybug, it does happen all the time. Channels all over the world contract for the rights to show foreign programming. PBS does it here all the time.
The fact that they have made the agreements before the program has even finished filming just shows that they think George is worth taking a chance on and they think the program will draw viewers.

Yep. So here in the Uk you pay once a year for a TV licence (you can be fined if you don't have one) for £150 and that gives you lots of channels which includes the BBC, Channel 4 and other commercial channels. Sky and Virgin cost extra.......
So I can currently get things like Downton, Sach Baron Cohen - and soon George!

Re: Catch 22 now bought by the UK, Italy and France
I'm jealous. We don't have tv licenses but we do pay for cable tv or Netflix or Hulu or whatever we have. Now my phone/computer company is offering "bundles" that include tv as well - but though they are offering a lot, there are channels that I get now that they don't provide. I'm thinking about it.
Meanwhile, I'm wondering if there's a way to see "Catch 22" without subscribing to Hulu. It's all starting to add up and I'm cheap!

I know so little about the workings of George Clooney's career life. That's good to know, thanks Lizzy.LizzyNY wrote:Yes, Ladybug, it does happen all the time. Channels all over the world contract for the rights to show foreign programming. PBS does it here all the time.
