Re: George and Amal Clooney will join March for Our Lives and donated to the cause
I think the movement and donations are noble. However until we change the culture that impose the perspective:
People have a moral right/duty to murder, we will have children with mindset, not only do they have the right to murder, they have a call of duty to murder.
This perspective is found in Governments, Churches/Mosques, business professionals, and every day people who believe they have a call/duty to murder.
Changing gun laws will not stop those who live with this perspective. Those who believe the have a duty to murder, will continue to murder and we will have children who live with that mindset. In other words change the gun laws, children will start using vehicles and find ways to get guns.
What's the answer:
Demand Elected Officials clearly define wars they are actively engaged in and make clear the designated end goal.
Hold Churches/Mosques accountable to a standard where murder is not defined as justified killing/massacre.
Business Professionals are not allowed to operate with oppressive and substandard practices.
Teach our children every life is valuable (including their own), and no person has the God given right to murder another.

George Clooney to join Florida teens in gun control march on Washington
LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - George Clooney and his wife said on Tuesday they are donating $500,000 to the “March for Our Lives” rally in Washington and will walk with students in support of gun control following last week’s shooting at a Florida high school that left 17 dead.
”Our family will be there on March 24 to stand side by side with this incredible generation of young people from all over the country, and in the name of our children Ella and Alexander, we’re donating 500,000 dollars to help pay for this groundbreaking event. Our children’s lives depend on it,” Clooney said in a statement.
The “Ocean’s Eleven” actor and his human rights lawyer wife Amal, who gave birth to twins Ella and Alexander in 2017, are known for donating large amounts of money to political causes. Last year they donated $1 million to the Southern Poverty Law Center following a white supremacist rally in Charlottesville, Virginia, that led to counter-protests and the death of a woman.
Students from Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Florida, where a 19-year-old former student is accused of going on a rampage with a semiautomatic AR-15-style assault rifle on Feb. 14, are assisting in planning the march.
The “March for Our Lives” event is one of several rallies being organized by students across the country in support of stronger gun laws, challenging politicians they say have failed to protect them. Busloads of Florida students headed to the state capital Tallahassee on Tuesday to call for a ban on assault rifles [nL2N1QA0NH].
Other celebrities have voiced their support for the students’ efforts on social media, including Justin Bieber, Lady Gaga and Cher.
Gun ownership is protected by the Second Amendment of the U.S. Constitution and remains one of the nation’s more divisive issues.

This is a wonderful gesture and I’m excited to hear they’ll also be participating in the March.
This is certainly least important thing to be thinking about, but purely from a fan perspective, do you think “our family will be there” means they’ll be bringing the twins

'Our family will be there': George and Amal Clooney donate $500,000 to school shooting survivors' march and vow to join them with their baby twins

George and Amal Clooney have vowed to give $500,000 to a march organized by the survivors of last week's school shooting and say they will join the teenagers when they take to the streets in March.
The celebrity couple made the pledge to March for Our Lives organizers on Tuesday. The event the school students are attending will take place in Washington DC on March 24 but others have been organized across the country including in Parkland, Florida, where the shooting took place.
The Clooneys will attend the event and say they plan to bring their eight-month-old twins Ella and Alexander whose 'lives depend' on a change to gun laws, they said.
In a statement, Clooney, 56, said: 'Amal and I are so inspired by the courage and eloquence of these young men and women from Stoneman Douglas High School.

March for Our Lives in Parkland is one of several events planned to take place across the country on March 24.
It is the Clooneys' latest good cause.
In September, the couple pocketed between $200million and $300million from the sale of George's tequila company, Casamigos.
They vowed to use the money on charitable causes that were close to their heart.

I seriously doubt the twins will be there. G&A and maybe Nick and Nina - but not the twins. Aside from not wanting their pictures in the media, I don't think they'd want to tote them around for hours. Besides, the event could get rowdy and they wouldn't want to risk the twins getting hurt.
Just saw that Steven Spielberg is donating as well. I hope some of the money goes to cover the medical expenses of the kids still in the hospital.

I feel in this instants the kids should stand alone....No adults needed on the March celeb adults or otherwise....Kids have a purity of voice that needs no help from celebrity....Money yes, but done on the quiet....Like my other favourite George (Micheal)....Donations should be a Silent Wisper...from one celeb to another....No distraction from the purity of the kids.....

I see what your saying but, no one listens to kids if they did they wouldn't have voted down the ban again in Florida.
The kid's should do the talking but I think the parent's need to be seen showing support to let those in office know hey we voted you in and we will vote you out in support of our children.
Hopefully, people are tired enough of the senseless killings to keep the pressure on and make changes happen.
The only power we have in this country is in our vote and our pockets. Sadly, everything comes back around to money.

They voted down even taking up an assault weapons ban for debate because they’ve seen the the reaction to these kids and don’t want to be on the record defending assault weapons. Also, many of these kids will be old enough to vote in November, and all will be old enough to vote in 2020. They ignore these kids at their own peril.

Yep. There’s already a Democratic wave coming in november (did you see that congressional seat that flipped last night, a Dem won a seat in Kentucky! In a county Trump won by 56 points!) If these kids spend their summer vacation going district to district, forcing congressmen and senators to defend themselves at town halls, it’s going to be a Republican bloodbath in November.

I don't know how old you are, but ask someone who remembers the '60s whether anyone listens to kids. If they didn't we'd still be fighting in Vietnam. The thing is, you can't just march once and go home. You have to organize to keep the pressure on. These kids seem to know that. I have high hopes for them to really make a difference.annemarie wrote:I see what your saying but, no one listens to kids if they did they wouldn't have voted down the ban again in Florida.

Re: George and Amal Clooney will join March for Our Lives and donated to the cause
I worry that if prominent Democrats march with the students, it will become very politicized. (Liberal vs. Conservative.) To me, the strength of this movement right now is the fact that it began, and is continuing because of children being so vocal and active. Let's keep politics out of it. If actors show up like what happened during the #MeToo March in January, they'll take the attention off the people who are being directly affected by gun violence. That being said, as a teacher, parent, and grandparent I plan on being at the march in Chicago on 3/24. I really hope that the Clooneys and Oprah stay home. Let the kids do this.

The former sheriff of Milwaukee has said that George Soros the billionaire Democrat is behind the kids protests. He is saying that the rallies pushing for gun control are a political effort driven by the democrats.
I hope every adult famous or not turns out they don't have to speak just support the kids.
He makes no sense Florida is a republican state which Trump won. It is obvious those kids went through hell and are not
stupid or being led. The one's who survived are lucky to be alive why would they not want change to save other lives.

Re: George and Amal Clooney will join March for Our Lives and donated to the cause
Celebrities don't give up their citizenship just because they're famous. They are parents and grandparents too, and have nieces and nephews and godchildren and friends' children who go to public school and whose funerals they don't want to attend. Now, if they were trying to push the kids aside and take over organizing and speaking at the march, that would be different. But they're simply offering their financial and in-person support, like millions of other citizens. Frankly, I think it's important for people like George and Amal and Oprah to show up. First of all, these kids are being attacked from the right; having people with long histories of humanitarian work and activism show public support is a boost for them. Secondly, one of the big differences between liberals and conservatives is that liberals care about everyone's kids; conservatives don't see anything as a problem unless or until is affects them directly. Let liberal celebrities whose children will likely never set foot in a public school show up in support and demonstrate that at least one side believes we're all in this together.
I don't understand the "don't make this about politics" argument in regards to any issue. Everything is politics. Our politics decides who gets health care and who doesn't, who lives in poverty and who doesn't, and in this case, who lives and who dies. Everything is politics.

Missa and Premiere - You both make valid points. I have to admit my first reaction to G&A going to the march was not positive. I kind of felt the spotlight might fall on them (and any other celebrities) rather than on the kids who should be the real focus of attention. Also, their liberal credentials might give ammunition to those who, no doubt, will claim the whole movement is a left-wing Hollywood set-up and use their attendance as proof and a way to undermine what the kids are trying to accomplish.
On the other hand, these kids need and deserve all the support and help they can get. In truth, anyone who cares about gun control should be at the march closest to their home if they can't get to the one in DC. Congress needs to see that this is a national movement, and it is not going away.

I'm also not sure if it's the right decision for celebrities to show up at the march. But the kids were attacked before George and Amal or anyone else said they would attend, and they do need any support they can get.
To think they need somebody like Soros to rally is just undignified and ridicules the victims. I'm astonished that it took survivots and relatives of victims of school massacres in general so long to protest against gun laws instead of seeing the losses as a side action of the 2nd Amandment.

Corporate Business control politics both Republican and Democrat; the 1% are controlling Global interest.Missa wrote:I don't understand the "don't make this about politics" argument in regards to any issue. Moral leadership both Christian and Muslim view the 99% as reprobate and mass murder both organized and random as God's judgement. That's why network, cable, print, and electronic news define murder, as a massacre i.e., slaughter. A massacre is viewed by Moral leadership as justified killing, against a reprobate world.
That's why it is extremely important to put pressure on news agents to change the narrative. It seems unnecessary, however words carry power and in this case, it is extremely important to insist a change in the narrative.
Elected officials are responsible for the wars we are currently engaged in. Ask yourself the question why are we engaged in a war in the Middle East? Who's benefiting and what is the end goal there?
Who's controlling Health Care, Food, Housing, Gasoline...? And, who's legislating oppressive and substandard business practices?
At the end of the day you have to ask the question, why did a teenager murder 17 people?
On a lighter note, does anyone know if George Clooney has Godchildren?

carolhathaway wrote:I'm also not sure if it's the right decision for celebrities to show up at the march.
The ridiculous accusations of some deep state conspiracy could only come from the far right. It is outrageous that somehow Soros is funding this movement. Or that young actors were being used to pose as high school students. How insane have some people become???
I would think many notable people will show up for this march. As with the Women’s March back in January 2017 celebrity presence then didn’t take the spotlight off the point of the march or the passion felt by so many who came to share an important moment in time. These young people planning to march next month have a strong message, they will be the focus but I’m sure they welcome all the support they can get.

Assuming this is a dodgy, right-wing source? Beware possible fake news:
George Clooney’s Publicist Set Up Media Interviews With Parkland Shooting Kids'I am doing this pro bono as I hope you would if victims of a massacre ask for your help'

George Clooney's publicist told the Washington Free Beacon that he has set up interviews between children who survived the Parkland shooting and media outlets.
Stan Rosenfield, who represents Clooney, said he was "approached by a friend, not Mr. Clooney, to help set up television interviews last Sunday."
Rosenfield said he set up five interviews on Sunday with Fox News, CNN, ABC, NBC, and CBS. When asked whether Clooney is paying for the publicity or endorses facilitating the interviews with the children survivors, he said Clooney's statement on donating to the "March for Our Lives" campaign "answers all of your other questions."
"Mr. Clooney has been a client of our office for over 16 years, however, I am doing this pro bono as I hope you would if victims of a massacre ask for your help," Rosenfield said.
Clooney was among the first Hollywood celebrities to join the new gun-control push. He and his wife Amal donated $500,000 to the new gun-control group that is organizing a rally next month in Washington, D.C., in response to the shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School.
"Amal and I are so inspired by the courage and eloquence of these young men and women from Stoneman Douglas High School," Clooney said in a statement. "Our family will be there on March 24 to stand side by side with this incredible generation of young people from all over the country, and in the name of our children Ella and Alexander, we're donating 500,000 dollars to help pay for this groundbreaking event. Our children's lives depend on it."
Parkland students appeared on all the major political Sunday morning shows, including CBS's Face the Nation and NBC's Meet the Press, calling for more restrictions on guns. The "attention is on us now," they said.
Rosenfield is president of Stan Rosenfield & Associates, an entertainment public relations firm in Los Angeles. Rosenfield represents other big Hollywood names besides Clooney, including Robert De Niro, Danny DeVito, Helen Mirren, and Charlie Sheen.
Rosenfield has not been very active in politics, donating to only two campaigns, including $2,700 to Hillary Clinton in 2016.
His support has gone to a politician who once fought for an endorsement from the NRA: George Clooney's father.
Rosenfield donated $1,000 to Nick Clooney's campaign when he ran for Congress in Kentucky in 2004. The Cincinnati Enquirer reported at the time on Nick Clooney's support for the Second Amendment.
"Nick Clooney supports vehemently the Second Amendment and would vote against any new federal gun restrictions," Bob Doyle, Clooney's campaign consultant, told the paper.
Doyle also said the Clooney campaign was "not attacking the NRA."

Re: George and Amal Clooney will join March for Our Lives and donated to the cause
Setting aside the dodgy source of the article, there's not much in it that I would question. Is it possible that Stan was approached by a friend to help these kids? Sure. Would he get them on tv news programs to state their case? Probably, and seeing how long he's worked with George I'm not surprised he would do it pro bono. Something had to rub off after all this time.
The only thing I would question is the part about Nick strongly supporting the 2nd Amendment and seeking NRA funding for his campaign. George did say his dad had to shake some pretty slimy hands when he ran for office, so maybe that part is true, too.

Yes, they're really trying to make trouble for George here, aren't they? Pointing out that his dad actually tried to be endorsed by the NRA 15-odd years ago while George is trying to promote gun control.

Katie - Most of the article is just the statement of verifiable facts. I think it only makes trouble for George in the minds of the people who already dislike him. It all depends on your perspective.
As I said, I found the bit about Nick questionable but, given our political system, it is believable - and it was 14 years ago. Different world.

You would think that who ever wrote the notes would have put them in a notebook so they couldn't be read by the cameras.
The amendment is more important than people's lives. When it was written times were different, yet no one is willing to bring it up to date and make it fit today's society.

I don't know who the source is, however I want to thank them for proving the case I presented over 10 years ago. Defining the murder of these 17 people as a massacre only proves my case. Thank you Stan.

Re: George and Amal Clooney will join March for Our Lives and donated to the cause
In Germany, we have very strict gun laws, in many other countries as well. I've got friends in Switzerland and do remember how shocked I was when I saw a gun in their attic (they also had a bedroom there where I slept, that's why I discovered it there). My friends told me that everybody, when leaving military draft is allowed to keep the gun he'd used. I just checked on wikipedia, and this special allowance was cancelled several years ago after the government had found out that hundreds of suicids were committed every year with these guns. Nevertheless Switzerland has very liberal gun laws, and still had had no school shooting. So those who say that not guns are the problem but the people using them, may be right. And somebody who wants to kill people will always ways to get a gun.
On the other hand it may help if you're not able to buy a semi-automatic gun at the next Walmart or a street market when you're really angry or desperate. This may prevent irrational acts.
Some years ago, a teacher of a local secondary school in my area hung himself in his classroom and made sure his students would find him. He had spread papers blaming the students for his suicide. If he had had access to a gun, he might have chosen a more dramatic way to kill himself...
In the end it's your decision in the States: Vote for politicians who are willing to tighten gun laws, ask them ahead of the elections about their point of view.

It does seem incredible it’s me but I’m not surprised. Our country is so divisive right now. I thought it was disgusting enough how the far right made up stories about some of the students being paid actors. Now they want to lay claim that this movement is being bought for by the celebrity elite. The far right will use all kinds of deceptive tactics to attack those who stand up to the gun advocates.
I give the kids credit for being savvy enough to see what’s happening to their genuine call for action. The far right is trying to denigrate it any way they can. If the kids don’t want celebrities at their event I’m sure George will stay away.

It's Me - The kids make a valid point. Donnamarie, I don't think the kids were thinking about the far right conspiracy-theorists and it has nothing to do with George personally. I think it has to do with the fact that when some people see any celebrities involved in an issue it becomes all about the celebrities: whether they like them or not; whether they agree with their position or not; whether they think celebrities should get involved or not.
For some people, as soon as they see a certain celebrity their mind is made up. They don't even listen to what anyone is saying.
So, it isn't about George not being able to do what he wants without being misunderstood. It's about the people who don't like George (or any of the other celebrities who will be there) making up their minds before listening to what the kids are trying to say.

No no no!... this is NOT about George....George’s March could muddy the water that all.... and bring more celebrities to muddy the water even more.....But it’s NOT about George...it’s about the kids....
I SAID IN MY LAST POST THAT THE VOICES OF CHILDREN HAVE A PURITY OF PURPOSE..... Kids when they speak do so WITHOUT an agenda.... They don’t give a flying monkeys if you AGREE OR DON’T AGREE..,Kids just make their point NO agenda...
Why my gut reaction that George should NOT march was because of this..... And the bigger picture... That if this March had gone ahead with just the kids (with parents standing aside as viewers only).... Then the world would witness something rare in our time, a truly peaceful non partisan protest.... and possibly the first of many such marches ... And I hate to say, the best and maybe only opportunity to wipe guns out of America’s future.....

Yeah, I'm not sure about them marching with the children either. I know he means well, but it's not his march and it should be about the kids.

George Clooney in The American. Celebrities can be effective in drawing attention but their endorsements can actually cost support
When George Clooney announced this week that he and his wife, Amal, were donating $500,000 to the organisers of the March For Our Lives rally to be held in Washington D.C. next month (March), the usual celebrity suspects piled on. Oprah Winfrey matched George and Amal’s donation, as did Steven Spielberg. The NRA (National Rifle Association) has just been given a free round of “liberal elites” ammunition.
The March For Our Lives rally (to be held on March 24th) is being organised by the survivors of last week’s Florida school shooting. It will be demanding that U.S. Congress introduces meaningful gun control laws.
Despite the wickedness of the 2012 Sandy Hook school shootings in when 20 young school children were shot dead by a psychopath using a legally bought gun and the widespread revulsion felt through the U.S. and beyond, the Sandy Hook massacre didn’t translate into legislative change. More than one hundred gun control bills have been introduced in Congress since 2012 - none of them have passed.
But the Parkland, Florida school shooting has placed gun rights/gun control front and centre of U.S. political discourse. For the first time in the country’s history, the door seems open on an issue that American voters view as more divisive than abortion, gay marriage and the legalization of marijuana.
In these crucial circumstances, the phrase “the stars are coming out to show their support” can seem like a shiver looking for a spine to run down. Memories of Hillary Clinton hangin’ with Beyoncé when she would have been better served talking to voters in Michigan or Bob Geldof shouting Brexit insults through a megaphone from a trawler on the Thames resurface.
Celebrities can be effective in drawing attention to the previously unknown - George Clooney did sterling work in bringing the crisis in Darfur to front-page prominence. But social scientists who have examined the influence of celebrity endorsements found that a celebrity’s support can actually cost candidates votes.
Bowling Green University Professor, David Jackson, surveyed the electoral effects of celebrity endorsements after the 2016 U.S. election. He found Beyoncé endorsing Hillary Clinton had a net negative effect of -19.9% (one in five voters polled were less likely to vote for Clinton because of Beyoncé’s support); guitarist Ted Nugent - who endorsed Trump - had a net negative effect on voters of -13.4%.
Either people didn’t like the celebrity in question or they just resented the fact that they were being advised to vote a certain way by someone who had no absolutely no conception of their day-to-day lives.
As Paul Waldman pointed out in the Washington Post: “the backlash is particularly acute with liberal celebrities, because their involvement in the campaign reinforces precisely the argument Republicans are trying to make, which is that Democrats are the party of the “elite” - not the economic elite, but an intellectual and cultural elite supposedly alien from the values and interests of ordinary, “heartland” Americans”.
The same could also be said of David Cameron’s championing of David Beckham’s support (the multi-millionaire footballer was then living in Los Angeles) for the Remain campaign two days before the EU referendum.
George and Amal Clooney have made it known that they will be present at the March For Our Lives Rally in Washington next month. This is doing the NRA’s work for them. Evidence suggests that coverage of the rally will now bleed into entertainment news, with mentions of George and Amal’s “glamour” and “style”.
Throwing George Clooney at the issue of gun control will not work. Gun reform can only be legislated for by the members of the U.S. Congress. The members can only be persuaded by the voters who put and keep them in office. Politics not Hollywood.
A majority of American voters want gun control however the legislation has consistently bowed to the minority interest of the NRA. How the NRA accomplish this is instructive. It’s a myth that the NRA have financially “bought off” members of Congress. The organisation - in relative terms - doesn’t spend that much money on lobbying. The American Dairy Industry (to take just one example) spends far more than the NRA in trying to influence Congress members. The NRA’s lobbying budget is just 15% of that spent by the American Real Estate lobby group.
The key to the NRA’s disproportionate success lies within the pages of Adam Winkler’s illuminating book “Gunfight: The Battle To Bear Arms in America”. Winkler highlights how the nature of a passionate belief motivates the NRA to find out how Congress works, how laws are passed or defeated and precisely where power and influence reside.
The NRA are old-school: they show up at town hall meetings, they stuff letters and lick envelopes, they put through phone calls to Congress members, they canvas colleagues and neighbours to do the same, they get their vote out.
If there is to be any meaningful change in the law, the gun control movement need to ditch the Hollywood hangers-on and come to an understanding of how and why politicians effect legislative change and beat the NRA at their own sophisticated lobbying game.
One major obstacle here is the erroneous belief that the “Gun Wars” break on a left-wing (gun control) v right-wing (gun rights) axis. One of the fasting growing organisations in the U.S. gun world is the Liberal Gun Club who explode the myth that gun rights activists are necessarily hard-right, racist grotesques.
Since Trump’s election/Charlottesville, there has been a surge in gun purchases by “non-traditional buyers” - a genteelism for ethnic minorities.
The stories from the Liberal Gun Club world speak of African-Americans living in certain U.S. southern states who are buying guns due to what they refer to as “specific provocations”; the gay women from the Pink Pistols LGBT group who believe in full gun rights and who view gun control measures the same way they view anti-abortion measures - an assault on their freedom; the transgender woman who on waking up in her rural community the morning after Trump was elected to find swastikas and the words “Faggot” and “Trannie” spray painted on her home went out and bought a gun.
Next month’s mass march on Washington D.C. will have to unravel all these strands, dispense with received wisdom and clear the miasma on an issue where the word “freedom” - Lewis Carroll style - means whatever you want it to mean.
The organisers of March For Our Lives need to work the system. Not the red carpet.

It's Me - Be assured that wherever they march - especially in Washington - there will be a strong police presence. If any harm comes to these kids while they are demonstrating the Republican party and Trump will be screwed.
Katie - Considering the way the conservative right is spinning events I think any celebrities thinking of attending should speak to the organizers first - or maybe the organizers should put the word out - about whether they want the celebs to be there.
