It’s your first night out since having a baby (or two), so what do you wear? If you’re Amal Clooney or Beyoncé Knowles, both of whom have given birth to twins in the last eight weeks, then it’s a prime opportunity to treat yourself to something new, distinctly you, and definitely not ‘mumsy’.

Beyoncé was first off the blocks this week, heading out for dinner with husband Jay Z at West Hollywood’s Sushi Park for the first time since welcoming babies Rumi and Sir Carter. The pop sensation wore a pinstriped, puff-sleeved wrap dress from boutique brand Alexis, and her choice of accessories - Stella McCartney platform brogues and a clutch bag by the achingly cool skate brand Supreme - said everything about her, and nothing about the fact that she’s recovering from a major physical experience.

Likewise Amal Clooney, on a dinner date with husband George Clooney and her mother Baria Alamuddin at the Il Gatto Nero restaurant in Lake Como last night, was not even considering the prospect of baby sick running down the black and white stripes of her nipped waist jumpsuit. Teamed with shoulder grazing earrings (which will be irresistible grabbing material for twins Ella and Alexander in just a few months time) she was also keen to keep things simple, glamorous and unmistakably her own.

New mum style is tricky territory - sometimes you won’t feel like getting dressed up, and sometimes you’ll feel the need for a full, online shopping spree to give your wardrobe a post-baby kick. The point is, though, that it should be entirely yours, an art that both of these women have nailed in their own way this week.
