Gala Magazine: Amal Clooney's 'role model' nose
Ok, now we've reached the bottom of the barrel for Clooney stories and have started digging . . . [translation below]

Diese Frau setzt in vielerlei Hinsicht Zeichen: Viele wollen nicht nur ihren Look, sondern jetzt auch ihre Nase[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]Amal Clooney© Reuters
Amal Clooney's 'role model' Nose
This lady is an example for many things, and now people also want her nose.
You can confidently call her a pioneer of a modern, self-confident and successful type of woman: George Clooney's wife Amal, with her entire appearance, is very popular worldwide. Obviously strict as a lawyer, elegant in the glamor look at parties and in the leisure casual in rocking designer luxury outfits.
Her countenance, at least in her home country, Lebanon, Amal's prominent nose is considered beautiful and majestic and is already a breakthrough in plastic surgery clinics as a model for beauty operations called "The Amal". Small, cute and inconspicuous is obviously "out".
George Clooney was in every respect a good smell in the choice of his distinctive wife.

I got stuck on the translation - I've used 'role model' but I know that's the wrong word and can't think of the right one! Something that others want to copy because they think it looks good is what I meant, not role model.

So big, "majestic" and in-your-face is "in"? And George had a "good smell in the choice of his distinctive wife"? Really? Did he sniff her like a dog? Was that what clinched it for him? OMG!!!! Google translate (I assume) strikes again.

Yes, bad google translate. The German article is kind of light hearted and makes more sense!

Re: Gala Magazine: Amal Clooney's 'role model' nose
Katie,
maybe you could use the verb 'ideal' instead.
But don't you use the phrase 'you model yourself on her/him'?
Then 'model' isn't wrong, I guess. The whole article contains a lot of play of words. But I just saw a headline that women ask for Ivanka's nose. I don't understand why people ask for somebody's nose, eyes, breast, butt,... like you're looking for a similar dress somebody else wore.

Re: Gala Magazine: Amal Clooney's 'role model' nose
Carolhathaway - I think some people think that if they have the same nose or the same butt or any other thing that makes them look like some celebrity they'll have the same life, too. I've always thought it was really sad that anyone could be so unhappy with their own looks.
When I was in high school a lot of girls had nose jobs - it was sort of a fad. Sadly they all went to the same doctor and he only knew how to make one nose. Unfortunately that nose didn't suit everyone's face and most of the girls actually looked better before they had the surgery.
(PS - Really sorry for the double post. Tried to delete one but it didn't work, so feel free if you want to.)

Re: Gala Magazine: Amal Clooney's 'role model' nose
Thanks CarolHathaway - 'ideal' is exactly the word I was missing!!
LizzyNY - I know what you mean. I once dated a guy whose sisters all had completely different noses (different surgeons!) and none of them had their parents' noses - except my boyfriend because society judges men by much easier standards than women and it's ok for him to have a big nose but not his sisters.
I can understand the unhappiness though: I think it's a rare person who's completely happy with the way they look and a nose is something that not only stands out but is also easy to fix.
Although I don't particularly warm to Amal, I kind of respect her for not changing her nose.

Re: Gala Magazine: Amal Clooney's 'role model' nose
Katie - It's funny you mention your boyfriend was the only one who didn't get his nose done. In my family it was the opposite. When he was 17 my Dad got his nose done and his sister didn't. Of course Dad had my Grandpa's nose (which looked a lot like Jimmy Durante's schnozz ) and my aunt had a cute little nose like my Gran's.
Dad and his pals turned the nose job into a trip to Florida (where he had the surgery done) and a chance to beach and booze while he "recovered". They left for Miami as soon as school let out and Dad came back to school in September with a new nose and a great tan.

Re: Gala Magazine: Amal Clooney's 'role model' nose
Well, I'm really glad he did it. My Mom said if he'd still had his old nose when they met she probably wouldn't have given him a second glance - and then, where would I be?! I like the way things turned out.
