#HailCaesar commands $543,000 at Thursday box office bit.ly/20wKmOd

I went through the hashtag #hailcaesar and   There are those who believe it is a big disappointment, and others loved the film so much. Can not say for sure if it a sign of success or failure .  but it's a good sign

I read a bunch of reviews on Rotten Tomatoes.  Either people loved it or hated it.  And to be honest I think that is the usual reaction to Coen Brothers movies.  You either "get" the humor or you don't. Those who loved it pretty much said it was kinda all over the place but they loved the theme of old Hollywood.  Those who didn't like it said it just was not funny at all.  Boring.  Sucked.
There you go.

I'm going tomorrow afternoon to see it.  Very Happy

That's a typical situation for a Coen Bros comedy, some love it so much while others hate it cause they can't get the humor.

They took in $500,000 plus on a preview day, before the movie even opened. I think that bodes well for a decent showing, but probably not the huge hit they hoped for. Considering that their promotional budget must be astronomical, I wonder if they'll make a profit on this one (or break even, for that matter).

Box Office: 'Hail, Caesar!' Underwhelms Friday; 'Pride and Zombies' DOA
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

The third new offering of the weekend, Nicholas Sparks' film adaptation 'The Choice,' is also struggling; 'Kung Fu Panda 3' will beat all three to stay at No. 1.

Ethan and Joel Coen's Hail, Caesar! grossed an underwhelming $4.3 million from 2,222 theaters Friday for a projected $11.6 million debut, the lowest nationwide start of the duo's directing career.

The news is even more grim for mash-up Pride and Prejudice and Zombies. The movie may only debut to $5 million after earning $2 million on Friday from 2,931 theaters. That puts it behind the the third new movie daring to open on Super Bowl weekend, Nicholas Sparks' film adaptation The Choice, which took in $2.6 million from 2,631 theaters Friday for a projected $5.5 million debut.

Caesar — earning a withering C- CinemaScore from audiences — looks to come in No. 2 behind Kung Fu Panda 3, which is easily staying at No. 2 in its second outing. The animated film grossed $5.2 million from 3,982 locations Friday for a projected $20 million weekend.
An ode to Hollywood of yesteryear, Hail, Caesar! stars George Clooney as a 1950s Hollywood star who is kidnapped from set and held for ransom. A Hollywood fixer (Josh Brolin) sets out to right the situation while also dealing with plenty of other fires at the studio. Channing Tatum, Scarlett Johansson, Frances McDormand, Tilda Swinton, Ralph Fiennes and Jonah Hill also star in the Universal and Working Title film, which cost $22 million to make after rebates and incentives.

Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, earning a B- CinemaScore, is based on Seth Grahame-Smith's book interjecting zombies into Jane Austen's classic tale. The story follows heroine Elizabeth Bennet (Lily James), a master of martial arts and weaponry, and Mr. Darcy (Sam Riley), a fierce zombie killer who must rethink his upper-class prejudices when the two join forces to conquer the undead.
The $28 million movie was fully financed by Cross Creek Pictures with Screen Gems distributing.
Burr Steers directed the film, which also stars Jack Huston, Bella Heathcote, Douglas Booth, Matt Smith, Charles Dance and Lena Headey.
Lionsgate's The Choice nabbed a B+ CinemaScore. Directed by Ross Katz, the romancer stars Benjamin Walker and Teresa Palmer as two neighbors who fall in love upon first meeting. The Choice also stars Maggie Grace, Alexandria Daddario, Tom Welling and Tom Wilkinson. Lionsgate acquired the project for less than $10 million.
The most recently released Sparks adaptation, The Longest Ride, took in $13 million in its debut.
Also heading into the weekend, Alejandro G. Iñárritu's The Revenant, now in its sixth week of wide release, passed the $300 million milestone Friday with a new global tally of $302 million. Its domestic total is $142.7 million.
Star Wars: The Force Awakens achieved an even bigger milestone Friday in becoming the first movie to ever clear $900 million at the North American box office. And on Saturday, the tentpole will cross $2 billion globally.

Have any of the Coen brothers movies been "blockbusters"?  Why would this be any different?

The "lowest start of their career" is more concerning, but it could definitely build. Rotten Tomatoes critics score is 79 and Metacritic is 72.  RT audience score a bit more concerning--48%.

“Kung Fu Panda 3” Wins Super Bowl Weekend Box Office

Kung Fu Panda 3 scored touchdown after touchdown at the box office this Super Bowl weekend. The animated movie, featuring the voices of Jack Black and Angelina Jolie, again karate chopped the competition. As Gossip Cop reported, Kung Fu Panda opened at number one last week, and it held on to that position for the second weekend in a row. The film earned $21 million.
It’s typically slower at the box office during Super Bowl weekend, which could explain why the star-studded Hail, Caesar! fumbled and only made $11.4 million for a second-place debut. The Revenant came in third with $7.1 million in ticket sales.
Star Wars: The Force Awakens added another $6.9 million to its record -breaking box office for fourth place. And Nicholas Sparks had no choice but to watch his latest book-movie adaptation The Choice settle for a fifth-place opening with $6.1 million.
Rounding out the Top 10 was Pride and Prejudice and Zombies in sixth place with a haul of $5.2 million, while The Finest Hours took seventh with $4.7 million. Ride Along 2 came in eighth place with $4.5 million, and The Boy snagged the ninth position with $4.1 million. Just making it into the Top 10 was the Robert DeNiro and Zac Efron film Dirty Grandpa, which earned $4 million.

HailCaesar commands $543,000 Empty Re: HailCaesar commands $543,000

Post by Donnamarie Mon 08 Feb 2016, 03:25

I did see the movie yesterday.  The theater was sold out. I liked it.   It was funny, silly, and smart and clever as most Coen movies are. There are some hilarious bits in it.  One is early on in a scene with a group of religious leaders and Mannix.   The tap dancing scene with Tatum is terrific.

As a woman who sat next to me in the theater said afterwards George was good at being George.  He was every bit "self mocking"  and he gets "to be a star and parody one".  Read that in one of the reviews and that pretty much says how I saw his performance.  And he did it convincingly.  But not a stretch for George.

I really want to see it again because as with all Coen movies there is so much more going on beyond first glance.

The movie has gotten really positive critical reviews.  The audience reviews have been mixed though.  And I heard both sides from the crowd as we left the theater.  I didn't hear anyone say they hated it but that is was "ok".

Did anyone else here see it?

I didn't get a chance to go this weekend. Want to see it soon though. Every movie is subjective and sometimes you need to see if more than once to appreciate it. I saw Up in the Air after the critics raved about it and I didn't really think much of it and wondered what the critics saw. I may not have been in the right mood when I first saw it. I have since seen it again and really enjoyed it the second time. Maybe this movie is like that.

(Marvel)

Deadpool continued to do serious damage at the box office in the wake of last week’s record-breaking opening. As Gossip Cop reported, the Marvel movie starring Ryan Reynolds scored the highest-grossing February debut of all time. And though it dropped a bit in its second week, it still easily took the number one spot at the box office this weekend. The comic book adaptation earned $55 million.
Coming in a very distant second place was Kung Fu Panda 3, which earned just $12.5 million. Risen, one of the weekend’s newcomers, nabbed third place with $11.8 million. Another newbie, The Witch, secured the fourth position with $8.7 million in ticket sales, while the Dakota Johnson and Rebel Wilson’s comedy How To Be Single took the fifth spot with $8.2 million.
Rounding out the Top 10 were the new Jesse Owens biopic Race, which finished in sixth place with $7.3 million, while Zoolander 2 came in seventh place with $5.5 million. Star Wars: The Force Awakens added $3.8 million more to its record-breaking box office. The film was in eighth place, followed by Oscar contender The Revenant in ninth with $3.8 million in ticket sales. Just making the Top 10 was the star-studded movie Hail, Caesar!, which earned $2.6 million.

The UK isn't on the list. Hasn't the movie opened there yet?

I really wanted to see this movie, but it looks like I'll have to wait til it hits dvd or pay-per-view. It's gone from the theaters near me and a friend said the theater he found it in was charging $20 !!! That's not going to happen in this lifetime - even for one of George's movies. Evil or Very Mad

That's too bad Lizzy. I thought ticket prices were high around here but $20 is outrageous! It's a fun film. The movie is not really dark and satirical like most Coen films. Maybe Coen aficionados were disappointed because Caesar didn't have that edginess to it. But I really enjoyed it.

I'm just back from cinema where I watched 'Hail Caesar'. I really enjoyed the movie, it was so much fun! There were some lenghts but the characters were just great! I can't even tell you which one is the best! Even small characters, supporting roles were so great, Tilda as the Thacker twins, Frances McDermond, Jonah Hill. And I was in the right mood for that kind of movie which also is important.
So, if you get the chance to go to the movies, do it! And there were some really nice closeup views of George's face and legs...

Glad you enjoyed it too carolhathaway.  It's a fun movie to sit through. I'm really surprised that so many people didn't like it.  It has such a good cast.  All the little vignettes are well constructed .... at least I thought so.  And everyone played their parts so well.  Thought Channing did a terrific job with the dance number.  And I really got a kick out of the early scene with the religious leaders meeting with Mannix.  Oh and the short scene with McDermond was hilarious.

And yes it's worth (well almost) the ticket price just to enjoy George's attributes Very Happy

HailCaesar commands $543,000 Empty Re: HailCaesar commands $543,000

I've been to a friend's 50th birthday party today and had a chat with her 21 years old daughter. We talked about movies, and I told her that I had been to see 'Hail Caesar' yesterday. She just looked at me and said: "George Clooney? He's so hot, I just love this guy!" She had no idea that I'm a fan so certainly didn't say it to please me. But I think it's pretty great that even a 21 year old girl thinks he's hot!

So glad to hear that a young woman can appreciate George's hotness. A young woman with fine taste!

I did read somewhere that Hail Carsar opens March 4th in the UK. I think I read that right. Can any of our Brit friends confirm that?

Yes, you're right, Donnamarie. It is due to be in cinemas here on Friday March 4th. Our Scottish newspaper the Sunday Post includes Hail, Caesar! in its selection of 10 leisure activities for this week. I don't know if I'll have a chance to visit the cinema but hope I can as I'd really like to see it.

I read somewhere that it dropped to 15th place, and has made $40,000,000 worldwide.

The indie winner: Hail, Caesar!

By far the top attraction in indie cinemas nationwide, the Coen brothers’ Hail, Caesar! has opened with a healthy £1.52m, including modest previews of just under £80,000. That’s well up on the Coens’ predecessor, Inside Llewyn Davis, which began in January 2014 with £758,000 including previews of £45,000. It is, however, down on the debuts of True Grit (£1.82m) and Burn After Reading (£2.05m). Their best UK lifetime total so far comes courtesy of True Grit (£8.46m

Thanks Had.e6! That's good to know. I think when all is said and done Hail Caesar will have done respectable box office.

Not a flop or a major hit. Typical Coen brothers.

For what it's worth, the movie is tracking pretty closely to the studio predictions.

About $40M domestic, $10M international by the end of its run... keeping in mind a $5-7M plus/minus for most prediction models.

Great article and video I M.

Will see if I can find a picture of Victor Mature, who was the actor who George based his character on.

It's a brilliant film, saw at the Electric at the weekend. Great fun!
