There was plenty of warmth on the red carpet during a chilly Monday evening for Universal’s world premiere of “Hail, Caesar!” at the Regency Village Theatre.
George Clooney found it refreshing that the Coen Brothers’ movie was set in the 1950s — when movies were still the dominant form of entertainment.
“I liked having really big actual sets instead of CGI (computer-generated imagery),” the 54-year-old noted. “And I liked having my hair dyed black, because it made feel young and lively.”
“Hail, Caesar!” is Clooney’s fourth movie with Joel and Ethan Coen, following “O Brother, Where Art Thou?,” “Intolerable Cruelty” and “Burn After Reading.”
“I don’t think any actor turns down a Coen Brothers movie,” Clooney mused. “They like to smack me around in their movies… When they send me a script, I’m usually playing an idiot.”
As if in testament to this, a few minutes, Joel Coen asked cast members Jonah Hill, Channing Tatum and Alden Ehrenreich to each stand, in turn. He then said, “Our main character is usually a nitwit, and George Clooney is here!”
Ehrenreich, whose credits include “Beautiful Creatures” and “Blue Jasmine,” noted on the red carpet that he was most appreciative of being afforded a brief return to Hollywood’s Golden Age during filming.
“I didn’t want it to end,” Ehrenreich said. “I had such a juicy part.”
Cinematographer Roger Deakins noted prior to the screening that “Hail, Caesar!” marked his 12th film for the Coens.
“I always like working with the guys,” he said. “I had to film this one differently than I would have normally, where I would bounce a lot of light, because I was shooting sets that were lit the way that sets were lit in the 1950s.”

ok, I'm having a dumb moment. Perhaps I tuned out of the Clooney world while he was filming this, but was he seen out and about with his hair dyed black? I don't remember seeing any pictures of him in every day life with darker hair (although it's very possible I just missed them).

George is a big name, and his role drives the plot, but I'm betting his actual shooting days didn't come to many at all. He was most likely done within a space of time that he didn't have to take his movie look public between outings. My guess, anyway.

I think we didn't get a lot of pictures of them when he was filming as I remember. We all know he can move around at times and no photos are taken so it is possible.

I've not seen the film yet, but I do admire and like the way GC embraces his age.
Unlike a lot of other stars who insist on dyeing their hair a weird orange hue or opting for numerous face lifts etc etc, it's refreshing to see an older person looking nearer the age they are, not a waxed up version of what they were like aged 25.
And he is one good looking man too.
