George Clooney film to open Berlin festival

Berlin - The Coen brothers' all-star romp Hail, Caesar! featuring George Clooney as a bumbling Hollywood actor playing the Roman emperor will open the 66th Berlin film festival in February, organisers said on Friday.
The Oscar-winning American siblings are due to walk the red carpet in the German capital on 11 February to kick off the 11-day event, ranked with Cannes and Venice among Europe's top cinema showcases.
"It's wonderful that Joel and Ethan Coen are once again opening the Berlinale," festival director Dieter Kosslick said in a statement.
"Their humour, unique characters and fantastic narrative skill are guaranteed to thrill the audience," he added, calling it the "perfect start" to the 2016 edition.
See the trailer here:
The Coens presented what would become their cult classic The Big Lebowski in 1998 at the Berlinale, as the event is known, and opened the festival in 2011 with their remake of the western True Grit.
A festival spokeswoman told AFP that Hail, Caesar! would screen out of competition for the event's Golden Bear top prize, which will be awarded by a jury led by Meryl Streep on 20 February.
The movie, which is due to be released in the United States on 5 February , is a send-up of Hollywood's 1950s Golden Age when the big studios still had the industry in their grip.
It presents a madcap day in the life of a studio fixer played by Josh Brolin and features a cast including Ralph Fiennes, Jonah Hill, Scarlett Johansson, Frances McDormand, Tilda Swinton and Channing Tatum.
The Coen brothers have described the role for Clooney in interviews as the third in a Numbskull Triology after O Brother, Where Art Thou? in 2000 and Intolerable Cruelty in 2003.
This year's Golden Bear went to Taxi by Iranian dissident director Jafar Panahi.

Ok no worries, I've merged the two threads. Thanks pigpen for posting the whole article and not just the link.
Sevens - usually when people just post a link, other posters don't bother clicking on it so possibly not many people noticed that you posted. I really appreciate everyone who keeps the forum updated and I'd rather have the same news twice than not at all.

I know that Katie but most time when I'm trying to post news ASAP, I should be on my mobile. That would make copying the whole article a bit difficult.
Anyway, it's HAIL,CAESAR! time soon!So hyped for this movie!
My favorite directors are working with my George again!!!!! Can't hold that level of excitement!

Katie, would you like to change the titles of Hail Caesar and Money Monster sections to both definite 2016? That really bothers me as their release dates were announced a long time ago yet we're still using the wrong releasing year for them. Thanks.

'Hail, Caesar!' to Open 2016 Berlin Film Festival in Berlin on 11th Feb 2016
'Hail, Caesar!' to Open 2016 Berlin Film Festival
Hail, Caesar!, the Coen brothers' latest feature, will open the 66th edition of the Berlin International Film Festival next year.
This marks the second time the directors have opened Berlin, following True Grit, which kicked off the 2011 Berlinale.
Hail, Ceasar! will open the 2016 Berlinale on Feb. 11.
Featuring an all-star cast including George Clooney, Josh Brolin, Alden Ehrenreich, Ralph Fiennes, Jonah Hill, Scarlett Johansson, Frances McDormand, Tilda Swinton and Channing Tatum, Hail, Caesar! is set during the golden age of the Hollywood studio system in the 1950s.
It follows a single day in the life of a studio fixer (Brolin) who gets a call that star Baird Whitlock (Clooney) disappeared from the shooting of the studio's latest sand-and-sandles epic Hail Caesar, a Tale of Christ's Life.
"It’s wonderful that Joel and Ethan Coen are once again opening the Berlinale. Their humor, unique characters and fantastic narrative skill are guaranteed to thrill the audience. Hail, Caesar! is the perfect start for the 2016 Berlinale," said Berlin Festival Director Dieter Kosslick in a statement.
Hail, Caesar! is produced by the Coens together with Tim Bevan and Eric Fellner through Mike Zoss Productions and Working Title Films. Universal Pictures will release the film in the U.S. on Feb. 5 and then worldwide following its Berlinale bow.

Not sure yet. I need to check. Last time , for the MM premier, I had off and this was good as you need to come earlier to stay in the front row. This time I'm not off and by the time I would go it is already pact with people. The Berlinale has always more people coming to the event then a "normal" premier. I might try to see if I can go and sneack somehow into the first row.

Nicky - When they premiered MM here I was told that people could sign up to attend the screening of the film as "seat fillers". The organizers of the event signed people up before the screening and then called in as many as they needed to fill empty seats. Maybe they do the same at Berlinale??

Just a little update.
Berlinale-Director Dieter Kosslick confirmed today that George will come with Amal to the Berlinale.
And Madame Tussauds in Berlin has already one wax work from George and this week they will have a second one. It will be revealed this week. And there are rumors that George will be there too.

Headlines not really. I had to search a bit to find the info. Some German newspaper wrote most about George coming and not because of Amal. But I must say the Media hype was bigger when MM opened the Berlinale maybe because other Hollywood stars like Matt Damon and co joined the premier. Now it less media hype. I think that's why the Berlinale director released the info about Amal in order to get media attention again. But it was not like that you can call it "headlines in most German papers"

More likely because MM was filmed in Germany and was about German history.Nicky80 wrote: But I must say the Media hype was bigger when MM opened the Berlinale maybe because other Hollywood stars like Matt Damon and co joined the premier. Now it less media hype.

It's interesting that Josh Brolin's character is the linch-pin of the film, but George and Channing Tatum seem to be doing most of the promotion. I haven't seen Scarlett Johansen do much press either.
I wonder if it's because of scheduling conflicts or because the promoters don't think they'd garner as much attention as George and Channing. It bothers me because putting George out front like this makes it easy for people to blame him if the film isn't "successful".

Any movie that George is in will be a 'George Clooney movie.' That's the nature of stardom and celebrity. You take the good, you take the bad...
For what it's worth, Josh Brolin burned a lot of bridges when he was drinking. He's sober now apparently, and working steadily, so he still has allies and industry fans, but he was an ugly, violent drunk for a while and might still have some time before he's trotted out as any big film's golden boy.

Way2Old - I wasn't aware that Josh Brolin's drinking was that bad. I guess he's lucky to have friends like the Coens who seem willing to take a chance on him. It makes sense that they'd want to protect him (and the film) - the pressure of a junket might be more than he can handle.

I think the stars of a film have contracts stipulating how much press they do for a film and also when/where they do it. It may be that the other stars had lesser obligations in their contracts and/or the fact that they may be busy filmig elsewhere (I can't be bothered to google what Scarlett Johansen is up to right now).LizzyNY wrote: but George and Channing Tatum seem to be doing most of the promotion. TBH, that was my first reaction when I heard he was in the film: couldn't believe that George would work with someone like him. I guess every person deserves a second chance (and a third and a fourth . . . ) but Brolin's reputation for me is as someone very unsavoury and not at all Clooney-circle friendly.Way2Old4Dis wrote:For what it's worth, Josh Brolin burned a lot of bridges when he was drinking.
