George Clooney on Anniversary Plans and Wife Amal’s Stressful Job: 'She's a Grown Woman'


George Clooney is gearing up to celebrate his first wedding anniversary with wife Amal on September 27, but it turns out the busy actor and producer already has a work obligation on the big day!
"Unfortunately, I have to speak at Jerry Weintraub's memorial," Clooney wryly told ET at the Toronto International Film Festival on Friday. "This is his last producorial way of screwing me over, that on my anniversary, I have to go to his memorial."

The actor and producer, who was in Toronto promoting his latest film Our Brand is Crisis, opened up about his wife Amal, an international human rights attorney, who is currently representing deposed Maldives president Mohamed Nasheed in Sri Lanka. It’s a stressful job that can sometimes put her in harm’s way, and her husband openly admits to worrying about Amal’s wellbeing.
"She's a grown woman with her own career," the Tomorrowland star conceded. "It's tough when they're stabbing her co-counselor [defense lawyer Mahfooz Saeed] in the head a couple days before she gets there. It's a little nerve wracking. But she's doing the right thing and she's doing it for the right reasons."
Clooney’s no stranger to strong women. In fact, for Our Brand Is Crisis, the producer re-worked a role originally meant for a male actor to accommodate his Gravity co-star, Sandra Bullock.
"It was a role written for a man," Clooney explained. "Sandy finally came on board and we sort of switched things around. She was exactly the right guy to make the film."

Being flexible with gender roles while casting, Clooney explained, is one way for producers to creatively manage the dearth of meaty roles for leading ladies in Hollywood.
"You'll see this happening a lot, where they talk about there aren't a lot of great roles for women," he explained. "The truth of the matter is there are plenty of these films where you can stop and look and just change the gender and make a really interesting film. So we need to start thinking that way."

TIFF 2015: George Clooney praises Sandra Bullock, Obama on red carpet

George Clooney says he has no ego when it comes to giving up a role to Sandra Bullock.
Clooney, a co-producer on Our Brand Has Crisis, was originally supposed to play the starring role – of a genius political spin-doctor who has come out of retirement to change the outcome of a Bolivian presidential election – which was filled by Bullock after she expressed interest in it.
“Yeah, it was a terrible mistake,” Clooney quipped on the red carpet at Friday night’s TIFF premiere at the Princess of Wales Theatre.
“I didn’t give the role to her. It wasn’t developed for me. We were developing it and she read the screenplay and said she’d like to play a part. We took a look at it and said it’d be easy to switch the roles. Since there’s such a lack of women’s roles, maybe doing that more often would be a good idea.”

The film, which co-stars Billy Bob Thornton and was directed by David Gordon Green, is based on true events and is an adaptation of a 2005 documentary of the same title, in which rival American strategists go head to head.
It follows the story of James Carville’s consulting firm as it worked Gonzalo Sánchez de Lozada’s 2002 campaign. Clooney said he’s thankful the politically-savvy film is coming out now.
“If it comes out six months from now, we’re going to be exhausted from election cycles, so we’re glad it’s coming out earlier than later,” he said.
“They’re fun (to shoot) and because I’m interested in them and they let us do it,” he said. “And they won’t let us do it forever, so while we get the chance we’re going to keep doing it.”
When asked a politician whom he may cast his vote for during the 2016 U.S. election, Clooney flashed a smile to reporters.
“There’s a guy named Barack Obama who I happen to admire,” he said.

Friday at TIFF: George Clooney likes Toronto’s weather

George Clooney was equally as mischievous when he arrived on the red carpet for Our Brand is Crisis, saying the weather was “lovely” with a knowing smile as he was interviewed on CTV.

Star sources say Clooney is staying at the Shangri-La hotel on University Ave. and they had to specially stock the bar with his tequila brand of choice.
He’s a producer on the movie that stars Billy Bob Thornton and Sandra Bullock, who also appeared on the red carpet to pay tribute to TIFF.
