This looks like it could be great! I wish it had a better release date though. February is where movies go to die.

Is it?
I thought it would be just in time for Oscar nominations. I'm sure advance copies will be going to those in the know early.........but maybe it is a bit late in the greater scheme of things

Re: First Trailer of Hail Caesar!
Times have changed! Monuments Men got a decent numerber at the boxoffice last year in Feburary and the Lego Movie became a huge hit in the exact same release date. Gravity also got huge in a non-traditional hot month October.kat19 wrote:This looks like it could be great! I wish it had a better release date though. February is where movies go to die.
I'm sure if the movie itself is outstanding enough compared to its near competitors and marketed well, it will get resonable rewards from the audience no matter the time.

Given that it's a Coen brothers movie, I'd bet it opens for a week or so in LA and New York at the end of 2015 to qualify for the Oscars. February is the wide release for the rest of us Happens that way often for award-bait movies, which the Coens' often are.

Re: First Trailer of Hail Caesar!
I haven't gone out to see a movie in a really long time but this ill go see. I love the Coen brothers films and this looks great.
As for the opening date for the film being February, I think the poster upthreadabout who said they would have a limited release for a week in December was likely right.

The Coen Brothers take on old Hollywood. Nostalgic, wacky, idiotic and with lots of dumb witted characters. Should be great!

Re: First Trailer of Hail Caesar!
just saw this comment somewhere:
And sly that Clooney is able to bring back his mid-90's Caesar hairdo. Hail, ER!
Does this mean a lot to you earlier fans? As I was too young to watch any ER things.
And...my favorite directors are directing some of my favorite actors&actresses(Honestly I would definitely watch this without George in it.)can't hold my excitement for this film! Hail the Coens!
just can't stop watching this trailer...a perfect edited trailer with so much fun!

Re: First Trailer of Hail Caesar!
Sevens, George had this haircut when he was making From Dusk To Dawn. He wanted a distinctive look for that film. During the filming he was also on ER. So the haircut carried over and George kept it for some time. Became popular.

Hail, Old Hollywood! All the MGM References in the New Coen Brothers Trailer, Annotated
By Forrest Wickman and Jacob T. Swinney
Coen Brothers fans have been speculating about the real-life inspirations behind their new movie, Hail, Caesar!, for months now, but the release of the first trailer on Friday morning cleared up a lot—while raising a whole batch of new questions.
Some inspirations appear to be pretty clear. Channing Tatum seems to be channeling MGM star Gene Kelly, who was known to bust a move or two while wearing a sailor suit. Scarlett Johansson is definitely channeling swimmer and MGM star Esther Williams. And, as MGM studio exec and “fixer” Eddie Mannix, Josh Brolin seems to be channeling ... MGM studio exec and “fixer” Eddie Mannix. Similarly, a glance at the credits on IMDb reveals you were right if you thought Tilda Swinton’s Hollywood gossip columnist seemed reminiscent of real-life Hollywood gossip columnist Hedda Hopper. But what about George Clooney’s bumbling star? Ralph Fiennes’ foppish director? We break it all down, as best we can, in the video above.

All the real-life references in the Coen brothers’ Hail, Caesar! trailer
By Joe Blevins@joe_a_blevins

The intriguing trailer for Hail, Caesar!, the next film by Joel and Ethan Coen, debuted online only last week, and already fans having been poring over it, looking for clues as to the content of the full-length movie, which is due to be released on February 5, 2016. The fact that some of the film’s characters are drawn from real life has been well-known for at least a year now, ever since Universal Pictures released its official plot synopsis back in October 2014. But now, thanks to that aforementioned trailer, there is actual footage to pick apart and overanalyze. And this is exactly what the sleuths at Slate have done, releasing their own annotated version of the Hail, Caesar! trailer and turning those precious two-and-a-half minutes into a miniature scavenger hunt for vintage Hollywood trivia. As the accompanying article by Forrest Wickman and Jacob T. Swinney attests, “We break it all down, as best we can.”
Right off the bat, some of the real-world references in Hail, Caesar! are not difficult to spot because the Coens haven’t disguised them one bit. Josh Brolin’s problem-solving studio boss Eddie Mannix and Tilda Swinton’s nosy gossip columnist Hedda Hopper? Both real people. After that, it’s a matter of speculation. The film’s fictional Capital Pictures, which was also the studio in 1991’s Barton Fink, looks to be a cognate of MGM, known for its plush musicals. The characters played by Scarlett Johansson and Channing Tatum seem to be stand-ins for, respectively, Esther Williams and Gene Kelly. And George Clooney’s handsome but dim leading man could be any combination of Tony Curtis, Richard Burton, Marlon Brando, and Robert Taylor. Even Frances McDormand’s supporting character, a nervous-looking film editor, could be the fictional descendant of real-life editor Blanche Sewell. And it’s not just famous people being referenced either. The Coens also seem to be quoting some classic Hollywood films like Million Dollar Mermaid, Ben-Hur, Spartacus, Quo Vadis, and Anchors Aweigh. For now, this is all one big guessing game. The truth will be known next February.

Re: First Trailer of Hail Caesar!
Cohen brothers wrote, produced, edited and directed + this cast? This looks like it could be SERIOUSLY great. Even if it's not reviewed well the people involved have enough fans to make it popular and profitable.
I agree with the posters upthread that said that if they (TPTB) think the film is Oscar worthy they'll have it play for a week in a limited way to get buzz going and then wide release near when Oscar nominations are picked.
One of my cousins spouse worked in one of the art departments on this film and from what I heard it was one of the best experiences they've ever had working on a film. Sorry no insider gossip beyond that, but it's cool to hear something like that about so many artists whose work I like.
A bit OT but does anyone know if that's Clancy Brown in the trailer at about the 44-48 second mark? Only other guy dressed the same as George. Big fan of his since Carnivale

I probably should have just looked that up myself For some reason I never think of checking IMDb anymore. Probably because the boards over there are haunted by some scarey scarey creatures

Hail Caesar! has been rated PG-13 for some suggestive content and smoking.
