I was waiting for someone to bring this up. Not hearing from her in a few days could be a really good thing or maybe a not so good thing. Keeping my fingers crossed for the former!

A shout out to Caitlyn Jenner (formerly Bruce Jenner) for her coming out. Soon to be the cover of Vanity Fair. I respect her for coming out for the sake of her own sanity and for all people who struggle with sexual identity issues.

I think she has the best face her money could buy, and it's not at all bad.
I'm confused. 'Bruce' had 2 or 3 marriages, all to women. So is Caitlyn a gay woman? Or was 'Bruce' also attracted to men?
I'm only reading headlines, not the stories.

I would think she is a gay woman Way2. However, the one time I saw her asked directly, she refused to answer and said that gender identity and sexuality are 2 separate issues-- but also said that as a man Bruce always liked women.
I think it is great that she is coming forward with her story--however, I think that folks gotta realize that most transgender people don't have the money to pay for all this plastic surgery, wardrobe, etc. His money is paving the way for an easier and somewhat unrealistic transition (albeit in the public eye) to a woman IMO. I can also understand why his kids from the 2 previous marriages don't want to be on the reality show. Both because it is her choice to do it, but also theirs not to want to, especially considering he was a crappy dad to them most of their lives.

Yeah, but Bruce the man on the inside was a woman, so s/he was a woman attracted to women...? Bruce was a lesbian?
I feel all the compassion in the world for her, but I am exceedingly grateful that I landed firmly on one simple, definable spot on the spectrum.

Re: June 2015 Chit Chat
I don't know much about Bruce Jenner other than what I've heard on the news. I didn't even watch the Diane Sawyer interview. So I wouldn't even begin to try to understand who Bruce was or how Caitlyn will lead her life.
I just can't imagine the suffering a person goes through when you have to lie about who you are every day of your life. I too feel very fortunate that at the very least I'm comfortable in my own skin.
What fava said is so true tho. Most transgender people can't afford the medical treatments/surgeries necessary to change their sexual identity. Many will struggle their whole lives.

Mods, could we make Bruce/Caitlyn Jenner it's own thread? If people want to discuss it, they could go there rather than clutter up Chit Chat.

Another example of how dangerous people who hate are to our world. We lost nine African American citizens last night while they attended a bible study in their church in Charleston, South Carolina. A 21 year old white man sat with these parishioners for almost an hour and then declared that he had to kill them because he had to stop the blacks from raping "our" women and taking over our country. Can't tell you how angry this makes me. Sad and sickening.

One of the saddest things of all is that his Daddy gave him a gun for his birthday. Did he know so little about his child that he couldn't see that he was troubled - or does he share his son's beliefs and think that this was ok? And who gives their kid a gun for their birthday anyway? This isn't the frontier, where a bear might get you on your way home from school!Donnamarie wrote:Another example of how dangerous people who hate are to our world. The gun policies in this country are a disgrace. They make monstrous things like this possible. My only consolation is that as often as not, these gun nuts shoot each other.

Lizzy yes, yes, yes about the guns. But I don't even want to discuss the gun issue in this country. I'm so anti-guns many would consider me un-American.
I'm not sure if someone hates a particular group of people that makes them mentally unstable. Think this person knew exactly what he wanted to do and believed in what he was doing. And was driven by hate. This guy has confessed as if this morning. He had a mission. He thinks he accomplished his mission.
His shortsightedness tho is that he doesn't realize his action will not change the reality. Our country is a melting pot of races and this country belongs to all of us. We will continue to struggle for all people here to be treated equally and fairly. But we still have a long way to go.

Please tell me if this is wrong, guys, but am I right in thinking that three quarters of the House of Representatives are sponsored by the gun lobby?
Obama must feel as tho he's hitting his head against a brick wall. What will it take to do something about it?

Yep ... the NRA has a strong hold on both the House and Senate chambers. That's why we couldn't get background checks legislation passed on those purchasing guns in the last Congress after the shootings of the Connecticut school children.
I will be surprised if it is an issue in the next Presidential election. Don't think Hillary is going to go out on a limb for this one either. I think Obama is completely frustrated and exhausted trying to get any kind of support for gun control legislation.

PAN - I don't know if it's three quarters, but it is a lot. Add in their uber-conservative constituents like the Tea Party and if these guys want to get any campaign funding they pretty much have to toe the line of the NRA. IMO, the only way this will ever change is if we totally overhaul campaign financing or if one of these pathetic losers actually blows up Congress. Unfortunately, I don't think either of those things is likely to happen - although I can tell you which one would be more satisfying.

Re: June 2015 Chit Chat
It'll weigh in here briefly, then leave it because this incident and topic just get me mad at the world.
I would be willing to bet that, as strongly as President Obama feels about our need for gun control laws, he won't be speaking about any new measures because (1) he knows it will never go anywhere in Congress, so it's a waste of time and energy; and (2) whenever he does speak about it, gun sales go up. The gun nut idiots get scared that the Black Muslim President is going to take the guns away from the rightfully American white people.
Think I'm being racist? I'm not. Read a few "gun enthusiast" blogs. Or check consumer statistics and look at the spike in gun sales -- and who's buying -- since President Obama took office, and after he speaks when another one of these crazed enabled lowlife cowards shoots up a mass of innocents. Hell, look at Texas, where there is actually a serious militia movement going on because the Tea Party gang and their ilk are convinced that the federal government (read: Obama) is planning to "invade" the state and "take it over."
We are being subjugated by a group of well-monied bullies who, I'm willing to bet, know exactly one line from the Constitution: "the right to bear arms." A line written by a group of men who could not predict the societal evolution that would eliminate the need for private citizens to arm themselves against an invading horde, and certainly never intended to mean that any moron with a grudge and enough money should be able to walk in to any gun shop and buy a weapon.
And I don't have the statistics on this, but I'd bet that gun owners rarely use their guns for the self-defense purposes they're always screaming about. Kids accidentally kill themselves with them, or people like George Zimmerman get real tough and murder someone, or lots of arguments that we don't know about get settled when one party draws their "piece," but the self-defense argument is a lie.
Twenty children in the northeast were murdered by a young man who never should have been able to touch a gun, and our Congress did nothing to strengthen the laws that restrict access to guns. I very seriously doubt that the murder of nine Black people in a southern city that still flies the Confederate flag and has concealed carry laws but no requirement for a permit to purchase or registration of handguns, is going to kick anybody's asses into gear to do the right thing.

Way2, Im totally with you on every one of your points. I've made the exact same arguments. The proliferation of guns and gun ownership in this country is beyond reasonableness. And sadly as an American it shows a dark side of our culture that I'm not proud of.

Re: June 2015 Chit Chat
This whole issue brings me a deep sense of sadness and shame. Our country has such enormous potential for good, both at home and in the wider world, and we waste it every chance we get. Growing up I was so proud to be an American, so proud of what this country stood for - but that's all been buried under a pile of political bullshit and media hype. I'm not sure who we are anymore, but whoever or whatever we're turning into, it isn't what we were meant to be or what we could become.
I know we're often called a "young" country that gained its position in the world from circumstance rather than through merit. But we always offered the world the "American Dream" of a place where anyone could succeed and live happily as long as they worked hard and followed the law. That wasn't always true but we were (and many of us still are) working to make things right. The ideal still remains the same - the reality sadly is lagging far behind.
IMO we are, for all intents and purposes like spoiled, entitled teenagers. Our image in the world is of a frat boy indulging in an orgy of sex, drugs and rock & roll who will fight anyone who tries to reason with him. It is totally embarrassing. We will either outgrow it or get our asses kicked. Either way, one can only hope the rest of the world realizes that these are growing pains and that sooner or later we will get back on track. For all our faults we still have a lot to offer the world.

Bonsoir Nicky. Ooh lala what a good time you must have had. I could make a meal out of a good bottle of wine and delicious cheese. Nice must be nice!! Lol!
I've not been to Nice but was in Monoco a couple of decades ago. Sorry about the rain back home but it makes you appreciate the sun that much more when it finally makes an appearance.

Re: June 2015 Chit Chat
On the South Carolina issue...
Latest news is that there is serious call to remove the Confederate flag from government buildings, Wal-mart is no longer going to sell Confederate badged clothing or flags (sales have shot through the roof though as people go out buying up the supply - morons); and several more Southern states are looking at possibly changing their state flags and license plates to take off the Confederate flag.
Many Southerns are still trying to convince the rest of the country that it's just a symbol of their past and that it's not racist.
But my opinion is that for too many years it HAS been the symbol of a population of people who fought long and hard so that they could continue to have the "freedom" to keep slaves. That so many Southerners don't see how abhorrent that whole concept is, to me, is very sad. That in this day and age these people don't see how it taints THEM and makes others see THEM as purely racist is an indicator of how deeply entrenched this notion of "the South rising up again" is in them.
A rapper, who I really don't know made some very insightful and biting comments regarding white supremacy.
And it's made me think - perhaps this ongoing cycle of death and birth is God's way (or any higher being in which you may believe) of trying to teach us that racism is not something with which you are born.
Children are not born racists. It is taught, learned and ingrained by their parents and by the what they experience as they grow.
What if this cycle is God's way of trying to get us to "get it." That we are supposed to continue to be like children and not be racist and not be judgmental of others? And until we do that, until we stop teaching children to grow up to be racist, that this "everlasting life" that so many religions teach won't ever be realized. That until we learn these lessons of living our lives as children - accepting of everyone we will never stop this cycle of death and birth - we will continue to find that everlasting life elusive. We need to stop killing each other because of race and/or religion and/or sexual orientation.

Read Lupe Fiasco's Open Letter About White Supremacy
By Billboard Staff | June 21, 2015 6:30 PM EDT
A letter. Part 1 Of 3
Dear White Supremacy,
First of all you are not really that supreme. While throughout history White Supremacy it must be admitted you have achieved some very dominant positions. These positions have been gained mostly through force or some biological agent such as disease that did a lot of the dirty work for you in advance. I mean anybody can use force on an unarmed populous and anybody can have smallpox. Not judging, just wanted to point out that having a disease that native folks aren't immune to because they've never seen it doesn't make you strategically smart or tactically superior, just kind of sick. And these dominant positions don't really stand up to the test of time that long either. There is nothing about you biologically or physically that denotes an innate mode of supremacy. For that matter there is also nothing about you psychologically, philosophically, cognitively, academically, socially, architecturally, culturally or even financially that signifies a higher position above any other group. And to be diplomatic there is nothing about you that denotes innate inferiority as well. So what you really are is something in the middle. You are regular. White Regularity is congruent to all other forms of regularity i.e. Black, Brown, Etc etc. But in regularity there is room for differences and this is where White Regularity shines! Each group gets the same essential universals. Dance, food, music, etc. and it must be admitted that the White Regularity take on these universal institutions has been unbelievably impressive and a great addition to the total world culture. I mean spaghetti and meatballs, Romeo & Juliet, Coldplay, The Tuxedo, lighter that air travel are all world class additions to the collective bucket but they are no less or more impressive than every other regular groups take on the universals either. And if we really wanted to get analytical every invention is built on inspiration from a previously existing invention so the claim of "The Supreme 1st" to do something is highly debatable and except for a few exceptions, impossible! All things human aren't born from a supreme overlord solely working in isolation.
Part 2 of 3
Things are created in collaboration and in tandem with other cultures, knowledge structures and movements and more important, People. I mean if those Muslims didn't catalog all that Greek philosophy for research we might not even know who Plato was. Now whether this collaboration is forced, which is seen so much but not exclusively throughout human history, does not take away the fact that it is done with the help of somebody else. We are supreme as a spectrum of colors in collaboration. One color does not dominate the other nor can it. Sure Steve Jobs was white. But the guy who built the computer was probably Chinese. And the girl who wrote the programs for the computer is probably from Mumbai. And the raw materials that were used to make it where probably first pulled out of the ground by somebody in South Africa. And if you take this highly collaborated upon piece of high technology to an indigenous tribe in the jungles of Brazil they'd probably use it as a boat paddle. And we can go on and on down or up the rabbit hole all day long and you'll always find a regular somebody relying on the abilities of a just as regular somebody else that another regular somebody doesn't even care about. White Supremacy is a lie white regularists tell to themselves in hopes that they can get a one way ticket to the top and hope we other colors overhear it. Here's the bad news, ain't no top. Here's the good news though, ain't no bottom neither! It's just the regular ole middle where nobody is safe from being influenced by somebody else's extreme regularness. Is your swastika flag printed in Mexico? Did you know the swastika is originally from Asia and the subcontinent? Did you know black people had slaves in Africa too? Did you know in the world your considered a minority too? I mean you call us niggers and beaners but you gotta ship all your formerly Native American land, backwood sourced ginseng to China to get money to support your meth habit. Meth that's made with chemicals produced in India. I mean Hitler hated everything about the Jews expect every possession they had. It's funny how the things you hate so much you have to rely on the most for your survival.
Part 3 of 3
And if you wanted to get really ironic and meta about it, White Supremacy has to validate it's own identity based solely on its relationship to other races! I mean now that's what I would call joined at the hip. Without us there is no white supremacy because there would be nothing to be supreme over! That sounds so stupid but sometimes the truth is stupid. Stupid like a fox. And no not stupid like a Fox News I mean the real fox. The animal.
In closing white regularity (the race formerly know as white supremacy) I myself on behalf of my own black regularity salute you. Good luck with the northwest front I hear it's beautiful in the spring and probably a strategic death trap if and when Yellowstone finally decides to blow up!
Yours Truly

Re: June 2015 Chit Chat
I heard that in the News that they want to remove the flag. So do I understand that right that in all other states in the US the "normal" US flag is on government buildings but only in the Southern States it is the Confederate flag?

Re: June 2015 Chit Chat
Nicky - The "normal" flag ( the Stars and Stripes) is flown in all the states. It is the official flag of the United States. The Confederate flag is the flag used by the Southern states during our Civil War in the 1860s. That flag is still flown at some buildings on the state and local government levels in the south. After this week, it looks like that is finally going to change. It's about time!

The Governor of South Carolina has ordered that the Confederate flag should come down. But South Carolina legislators have to vote to take the Confederate flag down from the statehouse. They may do so within the next two weeks. I don't know if all the southern states fly the Confederate flag on their Capitol grounds. Alabama's governor has ordered that the Confederate flag be removed from their statehouse. And Mississippi has the Confederate emblem incorporated into its state's flag. Florida, Arkansas and Georgia have varying versions of the Confederate emblem incorporated in their states' flags.

Re: June 2015 Chit Chat
Change of topic because I'm so Thrilled.
I know and love Italian Opera and have just downloaded on MP3 from Amazon UK a simply beautiful set of
Tenor Arias sung by Andrea Bocelli.
I didn't think he could sing Opera but his voice
now has a wider range to suit it.
He also puts dramatic expression into his voice
when it's needed.
I can totally recommend this MP3 download called
Andrea Bocelli Opera.
And No.....I haven't received any payment for this recommendation.
