As an actor, George Clooney is used to starring in emotional scenes.
But as the Hollywood star embraced his new wife Amal at their beachside bar in Mexico on New Year's Day, he found himself cast firmly in a supportive role.
For top-flying human rights lawyer Amal has been threatened with arrest in Egypt after presenting a report that exposed flaws in the country's judicial system.

Threatened: The couple were pictured with friends as it emerged that Amal had been threatened with arrest in Egypt over a report she presented which exposed flaws in the country's judiciary
The 36-year-old revealed she was issued with the threat after identifying the same cracks in the system that led to the conviction of three Al Jazeera journalists - who are now her clients. 
The revelation came as the British barrister spent the Christmas and New Year period relaxing with George in Cabo San Lucas.
The newlyweds have been joined by George's long-term friends Cindy Crawford and Rande Gerber and their children, along with other members of his family. 

The gang were pictured sitting at a bar enjoying a drink as they celebrated the start of 2015, with Amal dressed in a pretty sunshine-yellow dress.
It was as they chatted that Amal threw an arm around George, who turned to kiss her.
And while her handsome new husband is sure to have provided a happy distraction from the stress of her demanding job, Amal has been keeping on top of her heavy workload.

With her journalist clients in Egypt launching a new appeal yesterday, Amal has been speaking out to further their cause.
Talking to The Guardian's Patrick Kingsley after the Al Jazeera journalists' appeal hearing this week, she explained: 'When I went to launch the report, first of all they stopped us from doing it in Cairo.
'They said "does the report criticise the army, the judiciary, or the government?" We said "well, yes". They said "well then, you're risking arrest".'
The report, compiled on behalf of the International Bar Association, suggested Egypt's judicial system was insufficiently independent.

It highlighted the fact that officials in the ministry of justice have too much power over judges and the government too much control over public prosecutors.
Amal and her team recommended the practice that allows Egyptian officials to handpick judges for particular cases must stop.
She added: 'That recommendation wasn't followed, and we've seen the results of that in this particular case where you had a handpicked panel led by a judge who is known for dispensing brutal verdicts.' 
The three Al Jazeera journalists represented by Amal are Peter Greste, Baher Mohamed, and Mohamed Fahmy.

The group was initially sentenced to between seven and ten years in prison last June by the controversial Egyptian judge Mohamed Nagy Shehat.
Mr Shehata earned global notoriety during the journalists' trial after mocking Mr Fahmy's fiancee and rarely removing his sunglasses during proceedings.
A few months later he gained further infamy after sentencing 188 people to death in one mass trial.
The three journalists launched a new appeal yesterday - but Amal suggested she fears the flaws highlighted in her report will prevent the group from receiving a fair trial.

The men have been held since December 2013 - with their arrests coming after the overthrow of Islamist president Mohamed Morsi, a Muslim Brotherhood member. 
One of the defendants, Baher Mohamed, hold an Egyptian passport - and must pin his hopes on his sentence being overturned by the Egyptian courts.
But Clooney's other clients, Mr Fahmy, a Canadian citizen, and his Australian colleague Mr Greste, are still hoping for deportation to their home countries.
Both have applied to Egypt's chief prosecutor to demand they be sent to Canada and Australia under the terms of a new presidential decree that gives foreign prisoners such an option.

It worries me that Amal is not wearing her hat there now. Do you think George has eaten it? Perhaps he is on a high fibre diet!

It worry me too, that we are treated more Casamego pics and Amal pics from same bar with angry George. I say again do we take these spoof pics seriously. All comments are very bad on mail site, even person from The Hague, not kind. No one but here COH seem to think this real.

It worries me that someone wants to make this site look like the Mail site.

I admire George too much to think he would stage his private life ... in front of his mother no less. Please. And I've read enough anoymous comments from daily mail and other sites and most of them are Clooney bashers who just want to talk s***!

I think they really just drink their own brand so the bottle is there with them, frankly I wouldn't have known what it is since I don't drink. They look good and are enjoying themselves.

I don't think George is angry the paps are probably being annoying which they usually are. But they know the press will be there so they are dealing with it. I'm guessing Amal got sick of her hats or it was cooler .

Surely if he were upset by the paps he'd find somewhere more private to eat/drink? Not hard to do with 2 villas at their disposal and a complex that houses countless less visible, less pap-friendly bars and restaurants. That 'annoyed' face has featured in every set of pics taken to date. No one else looks bothered. He's coming across as petulant.

Well yes, that would be the sensible and mature thing to do. But apparently he prefers to remain visible just so he can be annoyed at other people noticing his visibility.

There are large numbers of high profile celebs there and they seem to manage to keep a low profile. Perhaps he should ask them how they manage to do it.

He has to look annoyed, so that it doesn't  look too staged.  I don't  know who he thinks he is fooling.

I don't think it's anything to do with being photographed. There have been many more than usual this holiday. And most of them are happy

I think they get annoyed with the paps' behaviour. They can be obnoxious with their constant shouting and yelling. Most of us would hate being bawled at like that

Bad enough on a red carpet where photographers are bona fide, but they're entitled to shout and yell without so much as a thank you

LOL! I thought I was the only one who is thinking that! She does that often, in white house dinner too months ago,has him headlock and pull him to her. He always keeps his eyes open while "kissing". So funny. Very needy I guess.

The kiss with the brand of tequila in the shot looks very staged seriously , l don't know  if it is staged but it appears that way . why does george never closes  his eyes while kissing ?

Yea I agree George has done his fair share of scowling at this location where his friends and family come to get a bite to eat and drink. I guess he should just get over it and ignore the paps. But IMO I do think part of his reaction is that he is trying to protect Amal's privacy. I'm probably reading this wrong but I feel he has brought Amal into his life and he just wants to protect her. Also because she does have such a serious high profile job he doesn't want her private moments exposed too much.

George has frequented this spot many times in the past, especially with Stacy. And he was fine with paps. He knew they were taking pics but pretty much ignored them.
And he should ignore them now but he just can't help himself and I think Amal is the reason.

I don't know how this private community is laid out but I think the beachfront is public so he avoids that area. We never see him on the beach. This spot where we see them almost everyday is probably a close walk from the houses and convenient and maybe he feels like I don't want to be totally confined by the press so damn it I'm going to go there with Amal and my friends. (Sorry for the run on sentence there). So he does but then he can't help but show his displeasure with the paps who he knows are lurking there. For his sake, and Amal's, he won't start yelling at them or start giving them the finger.

My other thought is he just scowls for the hell of it just so the paps know he is not happy. He knows exactly what he doing and knows exactly what to expect but just wants to make the point.

I'm done rambling on and on.

One thing I had to comment on,  was how impressed I am that Amal is tackling judicial corrupt practices in a country in the Mideast where woman are treated like less than animals.

it displays moral courage that is quite rare, and i admire her tremendously for it.  i was quite taken aback.  She tackled it IN EGYPT and then outside with the international bar association.  wow!

His 'scowling' pics look like a particular moment in an otherwise tolerant outing. Nina looks pissed too, in one photo, and Amal is looking in the same direction. It might be that some photographer said something way out of line.

If I owned a brand of anything with an international market, and had an opportunity to display it to an international market for free, I'd find it hard to pass up that chance. Not saying that's what they did. But they do have a bunch of shelves behind the bar that can hold bottles...

W2O4D-  i have to agree,  if the paps are going to make money off photos taken when they are NOT working and on private land why NOT get a free ad in?

Then why not have the gathering at home.  I'm sure they have  wonderful patios.   If they are annoyed with the photogs.. who obviously know they are there what appears to be day after day... go somewhere else.

I think they go there periodically because it will be photographed.  "Time to sell some Casamigos folks!"  and they go have 1 drink there.   That's why the bar is kitted out with logos (no Avion here folks!  or cola, etc. etc.)  Even RandE's new year tweet was shilling the Casamigos.  I have also heard of a few celebs offering a few photos in exchange for the paps not to be too intrusive the rest of the time. 

I did wonder how Amal's relatives would deal.  If her cousin takes more photos inside the house and posts them, I would expect George to shut him down.

PigPen, my point was that they probably had a good time there except for that brief moment when something annoyed them. We just got several shots of that same moment or occurrence. Nina is usually pretty even-keeled, so if she looked annoyed, I'd assume it was something for George to be really pissed about. But they obviously didn't let it ruin their whole day or force them to head for cover.

And then we go back to ... if you don't want to be papped, then have your meals at home.

The fact that they sit under a Casamigos Tequilla sign tells me they really don't care they're being papped.

If you really don't want to be papped, vacation someplace more private.  They can scowl all they want.  They know telescopic lenses can take pictures from miles out.  They know paps will say disgusting things to get a reaction from them. 

They want all that to stop - find a more private place to vacation.  It's all part of the job.  No use feeling any bit sorry for any of them.

I don't feel sorry for any of them, but at the same time I don't blame them for getting pissed if someone says something really obnoxious to them just for a reaction. Hell, they're only human and there's a limit to what you're willing to put up with.

I'm guessing this place is close to home and relatively quiet, so they tolerate the attention as long as it doesn't get nasty. Considering all the "product placement", I was wondering if maybe Casamigos owns this "bar" or whatever it is and they go there all the time because the company owns it. Maybe it's even on their property.

I assumed they did own it or, at the very least, have bought promo space there. The Casamigos livery is everywhere. That would make sense, to have a permanent promo/sale outlet on the complex where it was conceived.

Which makes all the 'annoyed' face stuff that little bit more ridiculous.

I kind of agree re the lack of passion though but then, he has never looked particularly passionate with any woman.

We're not going to see them exchanging hot kisses while they are sitting with his parents and their friends, are we? They are also aware that the 'paps' have their cameras zooming in on them.

Yep. I don't know of any couples, even the ones who are still in lust with each other, whose every kiss is a tongue bath. Something spontaneous happened, and George and Amal kissed each other. No biggie.

Who are we kidding no biggie?  Over 40 comments just on one set of pictures of a peck.  If they had been "tonguing" one can only imagine how the number of pages of comments it would have generated!  HA!

Can't say I've ever seen George caught doing that to any woman in public. But what we don't see well ....

Remember a pic of Eli giving tongue ( or vice versa) to her soccer boyfriend at some nightclub before she knew George.
