Let's talk about hair

Okay, I'm going to ask a really dumb question.

I realize this is vacation time, and all the styling and primping for work and the cameras is put aside. But...

Amal's hair just looks like regular hair. It's long, yeah, but not cascading past her shoulders and down her back and chest. And (even considering the hats), it doesn't look as thick.

So, does "blowing out" White/European/Middle Eastern hair give it that luster and length, and fullness? What is it, exactly, besides using a blow dryer after a good conditioning? I know my coiled hair can look different lengths, but whatever Amal does when she dresses up seems to give her a whole new head of hair.

I'm intrigued, from a cultural standpoint. Enlighten me, please.

Can only speak of my own experience Way 2.. when I blow my hair, I look okay -no need to put a bag over my head.  When my stylist does it-- my hair ( not my face!! LOL) could walk a runway.    It's all about technique.  It would seem Amal got some good advise/lessons on how to get that look from her hair/make up team. And probably some input from Cindy.  Same thing with make up.  There's everyday application and then profession application and supplies.

There are many products available for thickening one's hair, in shampoos, conditioners and styling products.
When on a beach holiday it's usual to relax one's
hair care regime, especially if it involves dipping in and out of the pool.
But then before venturing out for shopping etc
extra effort is usually made with one's hair.

OK I like to enlighten you.


First of all you need a circular brush made out of ceramic. A circular brush gives you the volume and the waves you want. The ceramic makes it shiny. The circular brush exist in different sizes. as smaller the bruch as smaller the waves. I'm pretty sure Amal uses a big circular brush like me. You can find those brushes from different brands already cheap in drug stores I think.
When you use the brush you have to brush the hair towards the inside and on the side (the face hair right and left) towards the outside to make them fall back and not hang into your face and the blow dryer has to be very close to the brush and then when you brush your hair down "slowly" the blow dryer follow that direction closely.(I hope I make sense). Without this technique it would not look like what we have seen on Amal. If you just blow dry long thick hair it will just hang down frizzy and dry (like my hair)

Then you need the right blow dryer. Do you got a cheap one then trash it. You Need to invest in the Mercedes under the blow dryers. and that is GHD !!!!!!. GHD is market leader and I would never use anything else again. It is not just hot air what comes out. It makes you hair stylish, soft, shiny. It is the newest Technology under blow dryers (and straighteners too). It controls the heat and does not burn your hair. Yes a blow dryer from GHD is expensive so is a Mercedes but it last forever.

And then you need the right product. Do you use Supermarket Shampoo. Trash it. Not good. Again get the mercedes under hair products like Redken. Redken belongs to Loreal but you can buy it only in hairdressers or Beauty Shops. Redken has different products. For me the "all soft" line is the best. I swear it is the BEST for thick hair  (not for thin hair).

And a tip, do not think of conditioners. Conditioners are not important. They do nothing for your hair they only make it easier to brush it but that's it. conditoners don't maintain your hair. Only a shampoo and hair mask do. I don't use conditioner at all. I use once a week a hair mask and the other hair washes I use anti Snap from Redken after the wash with Shampoo (leave in Treatment) in order to brush through easier and it maintains your hair. I use it for years.

So yes I spend a lot of Money for hair but it is worth it. Do you want to look like Mercedes or Chevrolet


Of course there will be People who think Supermarket stuff is is good as well (maybe they are right). If this is your opinion then I guess then you need no hairdresser. They would never ever wash your hair with a $3 Shampoo and dry it with a $20 blow dryer. If you have a hairdrsser like that  . Get it....Invest in your Beauty. Once an old neighbor told me "most beautiful jewels of a woman is her hair"... go figure...


And another Thing. I went once to Costa Rica and Colombia and it is so humid there it makes my hair frizzy straight away. I guess Amal has the same Problem in Mexico. Doesn't matter how great you blow dry as soon you go out in the humid air it destroys everything. My hair is not made for humid air. I'm sure Amal's hair is the same (and Cindy's too)..

Wow Nicky80 you are a wealth of information on hair. I'm impressed. I have thick hair almost shoulder length and it does not behave in humid weather. Unfortunately I live in a humid area of the U.S. so summers are challenging for my hair. I also use a flat iron and that helps a lot. But I will take note of your blow dryer recommendations. I have used Redkin products and others too. Redkin is still considered one of the best. Guess I'm way off topic here but had to respond. Hopefully you have enlightened Way2 sufficiently.

I'm sure with Amal's thick hair it takes a long time to dry and she must use large roller brushes to style. And her hairdresser said that she only washes a couple of times a week. Probably because it takes so long to dry. And she visits her hairdresser every week too.

Oh you live in a humid area. that suck for every women with thick hair. I recommend to move.

I use flat iron too. I switched to GHD 2 years ago and it makes my hair shiny and flat until my next hair wash. Just saying...for your next Christmas hehe

Thanks for the hair lesson. I was just wondering how a blowout could make such a huge difference in the way Amal's hair looks. I used a volumizing conditioner when I was at the height of my cancer treatment, so I know it can make a difference, but not that much.

Yeah blowout does make a big difference in life. Nearly everyone does it. Amal and in "the good wife" Alicia and Diane have it too. it just looks nice.


So, way2, do you have Afro hair? I had a black co worker with afro hair and she told me she is using fake hair like Beyonce all the time and every black women does that as afro hair does not look nice like Amal's hair (trying to bring it back on Topic by mentioning Amal )

Ahem.

Nothing against your co-worker, but I love my natural hair and have no desire to have straightened, flat, treated hair like Beyonce or any other European-emulating Black woman. And not all Black women use fake hair. I don't use chemicals or heat on my hair, and neither do most of the females in my family and many other women I know. I happen to think natural Black hair is beautiful and versatile, if it's cared for properly.  It doesn't always have to be in a traditional 'Afro' style.

Your co-worker happens to think long, hanging locks is the way to go. I don't. To each her own. She can't speak for all Black women, because she's just dead wrong.

Ok now that we have a thread about hair....

I have long, naturally curly hair. But I routinely blow dry it straight because it's baby fine hair that goes crazy in humidity.  

But I did find a product that helps keep it tamer so I use that now instead of conditioner and leave it in my hair before I blow dry it.  Luckily, I don't have to wash it every day.  I can go about three days before I need to wash it.

@Lorna, I think those leave in threatmens are the best instead of Conditioners. Do you always blow dry it straight? Sometimes it is nice to have curls.


I have strange curls. I can't leave it like this but if I want real curls I use the machine from babybliss. It is the Technology for curls. Came out last year and I had to buy it. so far they are the only once yet with this machine. Really amazing.

I love all this hair talk . He heeeee I want one of those dryers . I used to use henna as a conditioner on my hair . Natural no color henna . I would mix it up with yogurt and olive oil . Than someone recommended putting an egg in the mix , than mayonnaise . I would leave it in my hair for an hour wrapped up . He heee

When I was a teen, living at home, I used the  mayonnaise conditioner.  One day, my Dad asked my Mom why I was making salad dressing in my hair!!  Men just don't get it!

My daughter makes our hair conditioners and oil treatments. I don't know the concoctions, but it's some combination of coconut oil, shea butter, and Jamaican black castor oil, plus some other stuff. When my hair was thinning so badly, she handed me a jar of something and said, "Here, use this." I did, and my hair stopped falling out, so now when she hands me something, I just use it, no questions asked.

She couldn't help my eyebrows, though. That's why I'm so attuned to other people's brows now.

I like shea butter. Smells nice

I did never create anything by myself but I have been told if you put beer as a hair mask it is good too. Never tried though. I would smell like an alcoholic....hehe

I heard olive oil and eggs are good too but i never tried though. But Mayonnaise is new to me. Not sure if i would like Mayonnaise smell in my hair.

My sisters hair is like Amal's it is a little more corse and a wave kink in also. It grows very thick at the top to shoulder and then breaks off and is thiner down back. A blowout makes it straighter to see and looks more glam. And last for sister over 1 week, on occasions she clips in extensions. She cannot use ghd it makes her hair like board. Hopr helps.

Anyone using eggs in their hair as a conditioning mask MUST remember to rinse with COLD water. Use hot water and you may end up cooking the egg.

Coming back to Amal's hair, a blow out can make a world of difference to perceived thickness and lustre although I think for big occasions (eg the wedding) she may have had temporary extensions put in there too. Nothing wrong with that: a lot of people do it and you can even buy the extra hair pieces in any beauty shop or drugstore in the UK as clip ons (although I'm 100% sure she's not using clip ons from Superdrug!!).

If you want shiny squeaky clean hair as well as removing product build up, then rinse your hair in lemon juice....dont do this too regularly and careful if your hair is coloured
