'Hail, Caesar!' a Coen brothers comedy set in 1950s Hollywood, recently began filming on location
The Coen brothers are bringing some needed star power to the streets of Los Angeles.
The upcoming movie "Hail, Caesar!" recently began production in L.A., giving the region a welcome boost in feature film activity.
Production days for movies filmed on location have declined in seven of the last eight weeks in the city and county of L.A. Location filming for features has been down by a double-digit percentage so far in the fourth quarter compared with a year earlier, according to a Los Angeles Times review of film permit data from FilmL.A. Inc.

Written and directed by Joel and Ethan Coen, "Hail, Caesar!" could at least slow the decline. The Universal Pictures movie, a comedy set in 1950s Hollywood, is among only a handful of high-profile studio movies that have filmed locally this year. Many studio movies are shooting outside of California because of the allure of tax credits and rebates.
"While we wait for California's film incentive to bring major productions to the state next year, it's great to have features like 'Hail, Caesar!' in town to provide job opportunities to local film crews," said Phil Sokoloski, spokesman for FilmL.A. Inc., which handles film permits for the city and county.
Set to be released in February 2016, "Hail, Caesar!" follows a single day of a studio fixer named Eddie Mannix (played by Josh Brolin) who works to keep the stars in line during Hollywood's golden era.
In addition to Brolin, the movie features a celebrity-packed cast that includes George Clooney, Tilda Swinton, Ralph Fiennes, Channing Tatum, Jonah Hill, Frances McDormand, Scarlett Johansson and Alden Ehrenreich.
The Coens are again teaming with Tim Bevan and Eric Fellnar of Working Title, a film production company. They have partnered on several other projects, among them "Fargo," "O Brother, Where Art Thou?" and "The Big Lebowski."
Representatives of "Hail, Caesar!" declined to comment, saying the movie was a "closed set."
But a person close to the production who was unauthorized to discuss the project said the movie would film entirely in L.A. for 11 weeks through February.
The production is based at the Lot Studios in West Hollywood, where 200 extras were used this week in one scene.
The crew also has been shooting at various sites downtown, including City Hall and the Los Angeles Theatre, the historic 2,000-seat movie palace in the Broadway Theater District, according to film permits. The permits listed a crew of nearly 100 people.
Though based in New York City, the Coens are no strangers to L.A.
They previously mined the dark side of Hollywood in the critically acclaimed 1991 release "Barton Fink" and spotlighted a number of familiar locations, including Point Dume and Hollywood Star Lanes, in the 1998 cult favorite "The Big Lebowski."
The 2001 release "The Man Who Wasn't There," set in 1940s California, and 2003's "Intolerable Cruelty," starring Clooney as a Beverly Hills divorce lawyer and Catherine Zeta-Jones, also filmed locally. Then there was the 2004 remake of "The Ladykilllers," the Tom Hanks comedy that filmed in L.A. and Mississippi.

Re: Hail Caesar filming in L A - George Clooney on the set
All hail, George! Clooney brings back his classic Caesar haircut as he dresses up in ancient Roman armour on set of new film
He re-popularized the Caesar haircut back in the Nineties.
And for his new film Hail, Caesar! George Clooney brings back the classic hair style.
On Thursday the 53-year-old actor was seen for the first time on the Los Angeles set dressed in ancient Roman garb.

Ready for battle: George Clooney was seen for the first time on set of the Los Angeles set of his film Hail, Caesar! on Tuesday while dressed like a Roman gladiator
The Ocean's Eleven star looked much like a gladiator entering the Roman Coliseum as he was adorned in a primarily brown leather outfit.
George donned thick wristbands and body armour which featured a gold studded detailing all over it, as he wore it over a white and red tunic.
The ensemble included an attached sword and scabbard featuring the same metallic gold detailing in addition to a pair of strappy brown leather sandals.

Getting into character: The former ER star chatted it up with director Joel Cohen before filming his scene
To go along with the costume the actor had his dark locks combed forward in a Caesar 'do.
The newly married star appeared to be quite comfortable in the outfit as he often smiled while holding onto the handle of his sword and even joked around with the cameramen on set.
Actor Josh Brolin was also seen on set as he was in character in two very different ensembles from George's armoured look.

Retro look: This is not the first time George has rocked the Julius Caesar-esque look as he did at the 1996 Golden Globe Awards (left) which is vastly different from his usual greying look (right)

Looking good: George's costume also consisted of thick brown leather wristbands and strappy sandals

Comfortable customer: The actor seemed to be having a good time on set as he shared a laugh with a few of the camera operators
The 46-year-old actor looked dapper as he wore two different double-breasted suits: one brown and one pinstriped grey.
The W. star completed both look with a white smart shirt, tie, leather dress shoes and a fedora atop his head.
Josh stars in the Coen brothers directed film as a character named Eddie Mannix, who according to the film's synopsis, is a Hollywood fixer that works to keep the studio's stars in line during the latter years of the Golden Age.
Hail, Caesar! is the eighth collaborative effort between Joel and Ethan Cohen, who are known for their work on No Country For Old Men and True Grit, as Variety reported they began filming in early November.

George is also a frequent collaborator with the two filmmakers as he has starred in their flicks Burn After Reading and O Brother, Where Art Thou?.
The project boasts an all-star cast in addition to George and Josh, including the likes of Scarlett Johansson, Channing Tatum, Jonah Hill, Tilda Swinton, Frances McDormand, Ralph Fiennes and Ralph Fiennes.

No goatee/'stache. So either he grew it for fun, or the Coens saw it and decided to go with a clean-shaven George.
Wonder if Amal is staying in LA for the duration of the shoot, since George gets to go home every night.

Hey Joanna I would have liked some "cheeky breezes" to have blown through as George was strutting along.
You know Amal is into quirky shoes. She would probably like to her get hands on those sandals tho I think they look better on G than they would on A.

Re: Hail Caesar filming in L A - George Clooney on the set
George Clooney reveals his Julius Caesar look for ‘Hail, Caesar!’: funny or fug?
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
Here are some photos of George Clooney in costume as Julius Caesar. You read that correctly. A few months ago, George signed up to play Julius Caesar in the Coen Brothers’ Hail, Caesar!. The film is about “about a 1950s-era Hollywood fixer who’s called upon to keep the movie stars on what appears to be a Roman-era period piece in line.” Sounds like what really happened on the set of Cleopatra, with Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton.
So, what do you think of George’s look? Since this is a film within a film, George is playing a 1950s actor playing Julius Caesar, so the look has to be what a 1950s studio thought Julius Caesar would have looked like. And obviously, the look is being played for laughs. Which is good, because this is funny.
The Coens assembled another amazing ensemble for this film besides George: they’ve also got Channing Tatum, Tilda Swinton, Scarlett Johansson, Ralph Fiennes (!!!), Frances McDormand, Jonah Hill and Josh Brolin. OMG!!! I tend to love George in Coen Brothers’ films, and George + Tilda? Amazing, as always. I think George and Tilda are actually sort of tight.
According to E! News, George’s day on set was pretty light. He was brought to the LA set at 1:30 pm, he filmed a few scenes and he was done by 4 pm. E! News says George “appeared to be in a great mood, smiling and joking around with the crew.” I wonder if Amal is in LA with him? Or is she in London, working and dealing with her newfound fame?

I guess it´s dyed. Dyed, cut and slicked. I´m sure also Amal couldn´t stop laughing. It´s a Coen´s comedy so.. I can´t wait to see more of this.
And...... Too much time without seeing those strong legs !!

He's got a self conscious smile and swagger in that video. He must have felt very weird dressed like that.
I wonder whether he was wearing "The Hat" while
in UK to cover his Caesar hair cut ?

The video is so funny....George walking along in his wonderful costume,
with a big grin on his face.
Fortunately for him no cheeky breezes around.
Anyone in LA can recognise the area by the street signs.
Union Station is in downtown Los Angeles.

it means.

Los Angeles is quite spreadout.
The "downtown" area refers to the area where many of the high rise buildings are located for the city.
It is visible from many areas in Los Angeles county because most buildings in this city are either two to five story buildings. I think it may have had to do with the earthquake issue and building materials etc. in the past.
The "downtown" area is quite distinctive in that it has many high rise buildings.
On a map it is intersected by various freeways - the 110 North/South, the 10 East/West, the 101 North/South, and the 5 North/South freeways.

Re: Hail Caesar filming in L A - George Clooney on the set
OK this is maybe a stupid question but I have to ask it....
Why would be the set in Downtown LA? I though they have a big Universal Studio? And the movie is playing in a different time so downtown LA wouldn't really match the time?
What do I miss?

Jo- "Downtown" usually means the business district of a city where many people work, but don't live.

In that short video where George is walking with the almost forced grin on his face I'm thinking he's thinking "how much are they paying me to wear this f***ing outfit?"
Don't think I've seen George dressed quite like this ever! Hee Hee!

I like the Ceasar outfit, the haitcut suits him. Good Job Waldo.
No wonder he looks happy. Doing what he likes to do and being back where he belongs.
