George talks about acting Empty George talks about acting

Post by Katiedot Wed 08 Dec 2010, 14:23

From an interview December 2001
After 10 years of trying, George Clooney vaulted from television to the
big screen. Then he immediately started repeating mistakes that had kept
him struggling in mediocre television for so long.

Clooney said he always called himself a film actor even when he had done
mostly television. After losing out on a big film part, he concluded, "You
know what? I am a television actor. That's where I've succeeded, and
there's nothing wrong with that. So I decided I had to do better
television," Clooney told The Associated Press.

Clooney fought hard for "ER," the NBC series that launched him to stardom
and opened doors for his movie career in the mid-1990s.

"Then I started doing sort of the same mistakes in film, which is I'd just
take a job, a job and a job," just to keep working, he said. The results
were bad movies such as "Batman & Robin."

"There was a time, which was after 'Batman & Robin,' which was the right
time to go, 'OK, now if you're going to be a film actor, do better
films,"' Clooney said. "It's mostly about working with better people,
working with better scripts. That's usually the difference, I think."

Since then, Clooney, 40, has broken out with "Three Kings," "O Brother,
Where Art Thou?" and "The Perfect Storm." His new film, "Ocean's Eleven,"
re-teams him with Steven Soderbergh, who previously directed Clooney in
"Out of Sight."

From a 1996 interview about acting in From Dusk Till Dawn:

"I was scared to death. I had to work with Harvey Keitel, and my character was supposed to dominate him. Now, nobody but nobody dominates Harvey on screen. I did my best, but when I look at the result, I can see him throw in a gesture, raise an eyebrow, or even take a pause, and he takes focus. That's why he's Harvey Keitel, and I'm just a lucky guy with the best job in the world."

I'm so with you Lucy. FDTD remains one of my fave clooney films. That was the only film he did where he was a bad ass and pulled it off so well.

The thing that gets me whenever George talks about acting is that sense of vulnerability he still seems to have.

You'd think after all these years of doing it he'd be confident in his abilities but he always seems to have this edge, as though he doesn't trust himself yet.

I wonder if that's partly why he needs an Oscar because it's confirmation from his peers that he can do it?

Liked what he had to say about being a mentor to younger actors, that it's exciting. The confidence he lacks might come from comments he hears " that's not acting he's just playing himself " so an Oscar from his peers could go along way in him feeling worthy. After COADM, GNGL, people began to take him seriously, instead of thinking he was just another pretty boy.

I think it's humble, George is the sign of Taurus, the sign is never insecure. George began his acting career young, but only many years later became a good actor and that means commitment and effort. Now is a great actor and a great director but does not forget the toil and sacrifices, and what makes him humble and that is why (besides the charm and friendliness), which is very popular.
