Confirmed, he's growing the beard for his role in Monuments Men. Looks like we'll be looking at it for quite some time to come. Sigh.

If you can't beat 'em, join 'em. George Clooney took a jab at himself on the Oscars red carpet on Sunday, Feb. 24, quipping that recently growing out his facial hair has made him look and feel a little older.

"I was surprised how old I looked when I grew it," the 51-year-old actor told Us Weekly of the salt-and-pepper scruff that he's grown out for an upcoming role in his new film Monuments Men.

The good-natured Hollywood star admitted that being older in Hollywood does come with some perks, however.

"It's easy! Sometimes you wear holes in them so you have to get a new one but it's basically the same thing," he told Us of recycling his Giorgio Armani tux throughout the awards season. "I am 51 years old. You don't want to get all crazy with your tuxes. Just get something nice and standard."

Clooney's girlfriend Stacy Keibler, who stunned in a slinky Naeem Khan dress, added that it didn't take much for the veteran actor to look "dapper" anyway.

"I mean, he literally walked by me sweaty and in five minutes walked by the other way in a tux and looked dapper!" she told Us, revealing that the couple had been playing basketball until just 45 minutes before leaving for the ceremony. "He always looks good and he is always pretty consistent."

Keibler's look, however, took a little bit of discussion.

"He was in Berlin so I was emailing him photos of different things off the runway," the 33-year-old Supermarket Superstars host explained. "I was like, what do you think of this one or that one? He always gives his opinion. George just loves things that are classy and elegant."

"I sewed most of the sequins on myself," Clooney joked of her gown. Keibler topped off her look with Giuseppe Zanotti shoes, Lorraine Schwartz jewels, and a Tiffany & Co purse.

I know I'm a minority but I always liked the beard or the stubble on him. For me it's rather the haircut that makes him look maybe a little bit older (though in fact I find he does look quite like himself), I've always liked him better with a shorter/youngish haircut.

I am wondering if he just needs it for the beginning of filming then will cut it and shave it later? George Stout has a mustache but no beard---at least going by the photos of the time. Also he is in the service which means it should be short hair too.

I like his present look as well. The only look I found disturbing was in "The Men Who Stare at Goats." It was sure difficult to fantasise anything with that moustache! Lol!

Maybe she was referring to George....he's said in the past it doesn't take him long to get dressed up....compared to the ladies !

I think that's why he's always fiddling with his bow tie when
he first arrives on the red carpet. lol!

I'm with Lorna! He may look "sophisticated" but to me it just makes him look OLD! Which then reminds me I'm getting older! So please George...get rid of the beard and the mustache and cut off some of that top hair!!!!!!!

He's so silly. The day he looks old is when he has a too tall over botoxed transgender as a fake girlfriend on his arm. Only when that happens - is when he'll look old. Very Happy

Well as he has yet to start filming, I don't think he's going to lose the beard anytime soon.

I just hope he doesn't spend too much time in the sun so that his upper face gets tanned but the part under the beard turns lily white. Such an unattractive look on a man.

Now here's an idea, once he does decide to shave it off, maybe he'll opt for this look:

Whatever the perception on this forum, I think the general consensus is that he looks really old. Even on Fashion Police, Juliana (who usually fawns all over anything George) and Joan hated it. I think there was also a grandfather remark about Stacy if I am remembering correctly. I don't mind the beard because it doesn't bother me if he looks older. I think it must bother him though...

As faithful fans of George, can we try to get a positive outlook on this "George is looking old" ?

He's obviously grown his hair and beard for the new film
Monuments Men, we all know this.
Doesn't this speak volumes about his commitment to his work ?
He's prepared to look older and take all the gossip flack for that
for the sake of his work.
I for one admire him for that commitment.

Were there lots of comments about him looking old when he put the weight on for Syriana ? He was rewarded for that look and performance with an Oscar.

I think the constant comments about him looking old are unfair to him when it's known that the purpose of his look at the moment is for his work and his work is the most important thing to him.

Joanna, it is ok if he looks old, no big deal - doesn't mean we don't like him
but I hardly think George would compare growing a beard to putting on all the extra weight (definitly not the same type of physical discomfort)
BTW I love him in Syriana (most of all because it is an excellent movie)because I'll say it again : I like the beard (and he does have a much better haircut in Striana)... it's the hair now that I don't like, LOL

Yes, there were many comments on how he looked while filming Syriana. It's par for the course.

I also think we often forget his real age. He was so gorgeous in his mid 30s to 40s that that's often the image we hve of him in our minds. Of course he looks older now, he's 52.

This is what happens to all of us and more power to George for not doing the botox and comsmetic procedures.

I think he looks much better in his mature look, he look handsome and masculine, When he was younger he was sort of too good looking, if you know I mean.

he looks old now - when he's done filming he will have the option of shaving it and cutting his hair - considering how important looks are for his industry - he'll probably do so pretty quickly.

Look at Ben Afflek, he shaved his beard after the awards season.

I don't see George going all the way thru Feb of next year with the beard. Heck, just hanging in Como or even Cabo with that beard would probably be too hot for someone who is used to shorter hair and is normally clean shaven.

He said the beard is only for the film and the scene where he needs it is being filmed soon, so I guess he'll be clean shaven fairly soon. Or, God-forbid, with a moustache if he's true to his character's look.

I think that's just a matter of social conditioning. Women are expected to be beautiful and unfortunately for us, feminine beauty is equated with youth. Male beauty on the other hand isn't, so their wrinkles are considered fine.

If George were female and had those wrinkles and that grey hair, he'd never work again in Hollywood.

I like the fact that he is "aging gracefully". I don't mind the beard. I've actually always preferred men with facial hair than without.
