October Chit Chat
Thought I'd start out October with a sweet story. Hope you all enjoy!
Growing Up is Optional - Sharon Whistler
It was the first day of school our professor introduced himself and challenged us to get to know someone we didn't already know. I stood up to look around when a gentle hand touched my shoulder.
I turned around to find a wrinkled, little old lady beaming up at me with a smile that lit up her entire being..
She said, 'Hi handsome. My name is Rose. I'm eighty-seven years old. Can I give you a hug?'
I laughed and enthusiastically responded, 'Of course you may!' and she gave me a giant squeeze..
'Why are you in college at such a young, innocent age?' I asked.
She jokingly replied, 'I'm here to meet a rich husband, get married, and have a couple of kids...'
'No seriously,' I asked. I was curious what may have motivated her to be taking on this challenge at her age.
'I always dreamed of having a college education and now I'm getting one!' she told me.
After class we walked to the student union building and shared a chocolate milkshake.
We became instant friends. Every day for the next three months we would leave class together and talk nonstop. I was always mesmerized listening to this 'time machine' as she shared her wisdom and experience with me..
Over the course of the year, Rose became a campus icon and she easily made friends wherever she went. She loved to dress up and she reveled in the attention bestowed upon her from the other students. She was living it up.
At the end of the semester we invited Rose to speak at our football banquet. I'll never forget what she taught us. She was introduced and stepped up to the podium. As she began to deliver her prepared speech, she dropped her three by five cards on the floor.
Frustrated and a little embarrassed she leaned into the microphone and simply said, 'I'm sorry I'm so jittery. I gave up beer for Lent and this whiskey is killing me! I'll never get my speech back in order so let me just tell you what I know.'
As we laughed she cleared her throat and began, ' We do not stop playing because we are old; we grow old because we stop playing.
There are only four secrets to staying young, being happy, and achieving success. You have to laugh and find humor every day. You've got to have a dream. When you lose your dreams, you die.
We have so many people walking around who are dead and don't even know it!
There is a huge difference between growing older and growing up.
If you are nineteen years old and lie in bed for one full year and don't do one productive thing, you will turn twenty years old. If I am eighty-seven years old and stay in bed for a year and never do anything I will turn eighty-eight.
Anybody! Can grow older. That doesn't take any talent or ability. The idea is to grow up by always finding opportunity in change. Have no regrets.
The elderly usually don't have regrets for what we did, but rather for things we did not do. The only people who fear death are those with regrets..'
She concluded her speech by courageously singing 'The Rose.'
She challenged each of us to study the lyrics and live them out in our daily lives. At the year's end Rose finished the college degree she had begun all those months ago.
One week after graduation Rose died peacefully in her sleep.
Over two thousand college students attended her funeral in tribute to the wonderful woman who taught by example that it's never too late to be all you can possibly be.
When you finish reading this, please send this peaceful word of advice to your friends and family, they'll really enjoy it!
These words have been passed along in loving memory of ROSE.
REMEMBER, GROWING OLDER IS MANDATORY. GROWING UP IS OPTIONAL. We make a Living by what we get. We make a Life by what we give.
God promises a safe landing, not a calm passage. If God brings you to it, He will bring you through it.
Pass this message on to 7 people. You will receive a miracle tomorrow ( if you don't think so....look out your window when you wake in the morning and think about it)
If you choose not, then you refuse to bless someone else.
'Good friends are like stars..... ....You don't always see them, but you know they are always there.'

Happy October to you too. Feeling much better, thanks. Still moving slow and get a bit achy, but have graduated to a cane most of the time. For big walking, still use the walker but getting there. Can't wait till I can drive again. Hate having to bother my daughter all the time.

Pleased to hear that you're making good progress pattygirl,
even if it's slow.
First time of driving can feel a bit stressful, from my experience.
So maybe make short "test" journeys first, is my advice.

For you pattygirl...
Safest Way to Drive
Peter Ludwig, a caver from Austria who is appalled by American driving habits, offers the following advice:
The probability of being involved in a traffic accident is directly
proportional to time spent on the road.
Driving fast decreases one's exposure.
One third of traffic accidents are caused by drunk drivers;
two thirds are caused by non-drunk drivers.
Therefore, the safest way to drive is drunk... and VERY fast.

Although it's a left-handed analogy of safe driving habits, you can't argue with his logic. LOL

Here's an interesting article about a woman sharing her vodka early in the morning at the airport. (A woman after my own heart). The videos that follow are funny too.

Re: October Chit Chat
Dont know if it was publicised a lot overseas but most of Australia over the last 2 weeks have been transfixed with the situation of a 29 year old married woman who left Ireland 3 years ago to make a new life in Australia. She was currently living in Brunswick, Victoria. Her name was Jill Meagher, and she was on her way home about 1.30am less than 1km from the club she was drinking in, but she never made it home to her husband. Social media ie facebook went viral with photos and posters of her in the hope that someone would recognise her, I have never seen such coverage in the mainstream or social media before. 3 days after she disappeared police released CCTV footage of her on her walk home, where it is obvious that a particular man on that footage had been trying to engage her in conversation, police asked for help and people who use facebook/twitter forwarded that footage millions of times. Police arrested the man on the CCTV footage 2 days later and very sadly and tragically that man took police to where Jills body was.
All of Melbourne and Brunswick in particular have really taken this girl and her family into their hearts. Maybe because like her, we have all gone out and had a good time, and walked a block or two back to our homes or our cars, thinking we were safe, I mean the bottom line is you should be safe!! This was one of the busiest streets in Melbourne even at 1.30am. There have been silent marches in her honour over 30,000 people took place, more flowers placed for her to rival that of any celebrity/royal. Lots of love and support has been offered to her family. Its all very tragic but hopeful at the same time....
Sorry the story does not have a happy ending, however I believe that due to the community pulling together like it has, it has shown me that there are a lot of people out there with a huge capacity to help and aid complete strangers and that can only be a good thing.
Now if our Government could do something about the incredibly lenient sentences that rapists etc receive in this country, that would go a long way in helping to keep these people away from innocents.

Re: October Chit Chat
Yes theminis...we've had similar things happen here in UK.
The search for 5 Year old April goes on in Machynleth, Wales,
which is a small rural town of around 2000 population.
The man under arrest is local and the police also have his Landrover.
This kind of thing makes me wish that the police could "get physical"
With the suspect to get information, as in the old days of policing.
No, not the right attitude I know, just an emotional response
from me. It's just so sad....

It is so sad and leaves you feeling a little helpless, and believe me you are not the only one who has an emotional response to these type of situations, I even found myself thinking that he will get what he deserves in jail, which is so unchristian of me so I prefer to believe that this monster who murdered the young lady in Australia will get his real judgement from the one who matters, God. All we can do as a society is try and look out for each other, teach our children well so that maybe our own loved ones will be that bit safer (i pray)

I agree with you theminis.
Unfortunately, it's an example of one of the worst sides of mankind.
The way that the community is rallying around in the the search
for little April in Wales is an example of the best side of mankind.

Long time ago I punched a man in the chest/stomach so hard I left him gasping while I ran away so fast in stillettos screaming my head off. I had done self defence classes whilst younger but on that occassion while a little bit drunk and caught off guard most of what I learned went out the window.
Good to see you are learning self defence It's me, I'm thinking it should be part of the schooling for young girls.

Oh, this made me laugh today. I think you all know that one of my favourite websites is Photoshopdisasters.com and today they posted this advert by American Apparel.
It took me a while to see what's wrong with the picture and now I can't un-see it:
You've got to wonder how nobody noticed, don't you?

- Spoiler:
- I stared at it for ages. Decided her hands are odd and her left elbow looks weird. Then I realised she has no legs. And only then did I notice the horse had no body.

Submit To Me - First Time Bondage Kit
“Picture yourself lying here bound and totally at my mercy.”
All Mine - Deluxe Satin Blackout Mask
“Slowly, he slides the mask on… and I’m blind.”
Sweet Sting - Riding Crop
“He starts small, biting licks of the crop against my belly once more… until finally, that’s it – I can take no more…”
Twitchy Palm - Spanking Paddle
“Spank me, please… Sir,” I whisper.

Well I Googled Nose and Crotch Pub...found no pubs but some references
to male grooming equipment !
"A Wahl's survey found that the majority of men are diligent about grooming
everything above the neck (hair - 83 percent; ears/nose - 56 percent).
But fewer than one in five men claim they groom any area below the neck.
Surprisingly, it's their private parts that get the most attention (16 percent)
versus the more visible hairy body parts such as the chest (9 percent),
back (8 percent) or legs (4 percent)."

Words to live by:
Do not argue with an idiot. He will drag you down to his level and beat you with experience.
The last thing I want to do is hurt you. But it's still on my list.
Light travels faster than sound. This is why some people appear bright until you hear them speak.
If I agreed with you, we'd both be wrong.
Knowledge is knowing a tomato is a fruit. Wisdom is not putting it in a fruit salad.
I thought I wanted a career. Turns out I just wanted paychecks.
I didn't say it was your fault, I said I was blaming you.
A clear conscience is the sign of a fuzzy memory.
You do not need a parachute to skydive. You only need a parachute to skydive twice.
There's a fine line between cuddling and holding someone down so they can't get away. This is for Stacy
I used to be indecisive. Now I'm not so sure.
You're never too old to learn something stupid.

*Inner Peace*
If you can start the day without caffeine,
If you can always be cheerful, ignoring aches and pains,
If you can resist complaining and boring people with your troubles,
If you can eat the same food every day and be grateful for it,
If you can understand when your loved ones are too busy to give you any time,
If you can take criticism and blame without resentment,
If you can conquer tension without medical help,
If you can relax without alcohol,
If you can sleep without the aid of drugs,
...Then You Are Probably The Family Dog!
And you thought I was going to get all spiritual....

Pattygirl sent me this video of deep-sea photos. IMO this is the most beautiful thing I've ever seen. It's in 3D if you can get it.
