George Clooney used to date a woman named Monika Jakisic. She is Croatian, and someone (someone perhaps named Monika Jakisic) nicknamed her “the Croatian Sensation.” Which is unfortunate all-around.

Anyway, I always thought that Monika was one of thousands of names in Clooney’s little black book – they “dated” for a hot minute maybe six years ago, and then they were sort-of seeing each other for a few nights last year when Clooney was in London. It felt like she was the one pushing the connection, because being called “George Clooney’s ex-girlfriend” was perhaps a better title than “the Croatian Sensation”. Like so many of Clooney’s girls, Monika seemed to have more ambition than talent, and her hustle is good enough that she’s associated herself with Clooney enough times to be a “thing.”

So what happens when Clooney runs off with a woman who has a law degree and her own political connections? Well, Monika has to look for the next big name. That name? The Duke of York. Prince Andrew. Ugh, Andy. Dude.

From Hollywood royalty to a bonafide British prince! Sexy Croatian model Monika Jakisic, an ex-girlfriend of George Clooney, is now dating Prince Andrew, a source reveals exclusively to Us Weekly. Based in London, Jakisic (known as the “Croation Sensation”), 33, and Sarah Ferguson’s ex-husband “reconnected through friends recently,” the source explains.

Indeed, the low-key pair went on a date to Cecconi’s in London to celebrate the British royal’s 54th birthday on Feb. 19. “They sat next to each other at an intimate table by the front of the restaurant and were cuddling up to each other,” an eyewitness tells Us. “Andrew was making Monika laugh and kissing her hand.”

During his birthday dinner with his stunning new love, “Monika gave him a birthday card and the server brought out a white birthday cake for dessert,” the observer adds.

The couple continued their PDA-fest two days later at The Arts Club in Mayfair, where he wrapped his arms around Monika and kissed her, an onlooker says: “It was obvious they are a couple, they looked like two lovebirds!”

A rep for Buckingham Palace tells Us: “We never comment on the private time of members of the Royal Family.”

Royal refresher: Andrew is Queen Elizabeth’s third child and second son; father to Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie, the Duke of York is currently fifth in line to the British throne. He and Sarah Ferguson, the Duchess of York, divorced amicably in 1996 after a decade of marriage. The friendly exes shot down false rumors last August that they had reconciled.

Jakisic and Clooney, meanwhile, have had an on-and-off fling since 2004. They reconnected in September of last year — following his split with Stacy Keibler — with Jakisic sleeping over at his L.A. mansion. “They spent hours talking, and have an incredible connection,” an insider told Us at the time. “He’s been calling and texting her ever since.”

Well, it’s not like Andrew historically has had good taste in women. Besides his association with and marriage to Fergie, his romantic life is littered with “glamour models” (re: topless models), p0rn stars, strippers, escorts and con artists. I don’t think he’s ever romanced any woman who has serious aristocratic ties or, say, a university degree or anything like that. That means Prince Andrew and George Clooney have a lot in common. Charlie Sheen is kind of the same way too. Say what you will about Leo (and I could say a lot) but he only goes for A-list modeling talent, and suddenly his girlfriend choices seem almost classy.

Of course it’s also possible that this is just some huge hustle by Monika. We know this woman loves to see her name in the gossip press. Someone introduce her to Gerard Butler!

Alluring: London-base model Monika Jakisic, 35, the rumored new girlfriend of Prince Andrew

Given his often high-handed manner and thick skin, it takes an awful lot to embarrass Prince Andrew. But his current entanglement with Monika Jakisic, a party-loving bikini model who describes herself as a ‘spiritual student and humanitarian’, has done just that.

The Prince, who at 54 appears to remain rather a sucker for bubbly beauties, has three times been spotted dining with Ms Jakisic, who is apparently 36, although she claims to be 34.

Somewhat surprisingly, on all three occasions the media got to know all about it. Their first meal together was on February 19, the Duke’s birthday, at the fashionable London restaurant Cecconi’s.

A curiously well-informed report soon surfaced in a U.S. celebrity magazine to suggest that Andrew was ‘making her laugh and kissing her hand’ during the evening.

Their second date followed almost right away, at the Arts Club in Chelsea. And then on their third date, at the Royal Thames Yacht Club in Knightsbridge a few days ago, photographers — who will admit that they had been tipped off by someone — caught the couple entering and leaving.
As they left, they embraced and Monika bestowed a very obvious kiss on the Prince’s cheek. Then she somewhat shamelessly posted a picture on Twitter of a £600 dinner bill and a rather beautiful diamond ring; the implication was clear.

The ensuing kerfuffle was sufficient to make it necessary for the Duke to issue an unprecedented official denial that he had proposed to Ms Jakisic, who rather rejoices in her nickname of the Croatian Sensation.

Sources indicated they had known each other for as long as ten years on the Eurotrash scene, but there was an embarrassed assertion from his camp that ‘to say they are more than friends would be incorrect’.

One spy at the Yacht Club said the couple played footsie under the table and dined on Dover sole in a private room, which sounds very much as if they are more than simply old pals. Yet another friend claims Monika and Andrew look ‘like lovebirds’ together.

Would it be too cynical to draw the conclusion that Miss Jakisic or someone she confides in is tipping off media contacts so that she can make hay with this association?

Certainly, the story of the Prince and the Show-off Girl comes at a ticklish time for Miss Jakisic. For despite early successes as a model, hers is not a stellar career.

She says in her biography on her official website that she signed with the agency Select, one of London’s biggest, some years ago. This week, though, Select was adamant that she is not on their books. What’s more, a claim that Monika was voted sexiest woman in the world by Esquire magazine is wide of the mark. In fact, the magazine included her in a feature of the world’s sexiest women, country by country, four years ago.
The crassness of this low-rent coverage is perhaps best demonstrated by the fact the political figure Aung San Suu Kyi was named the sexiest woman in Burma.

Another early claim to fame by Ms Jakisic is that as a fashion student in the late Nineties, she featured on The Big Breakfast with designer Wayne Hemingway. She claims she was the show’s ‘resident fashion expert’. However, Mr Hemingway’s office said this week that he doesn’t remember her at all. Which is all a little odd.

Perhaps it is significant that her current management, based in Los Angeles, specialises in helping models, often East European, who are trying to move into acting.

If Ms Jakisic is seeking greater fame away from modelling, then a liaison with a high-profile bachelor might surely help.

At this point, it seems right to mention another ‘friendship’, with Hollywood smoothie George Clooney. Ms Jakisic was spotted on his yacht back in 2007 and in May last year they were apparently seen flirting in a nightclub. Then, last October, came reports that she and Clooney had spent the night together at his Los Angeles mansion. ‘They have an incredible connection,’ a friend said.

Clooney, embarrassed, issued a stern denial through his publicist. ‘It’s all made up,’ he said. Oh dear.

So who is Monika Jakisic, and how did she come to be so closely connected to the Queen’s son?

She can be found for a portion of the year living in a nice square in Kentish Town, North London.
Most mornings she will head off to the gym. Nights are spent wherever her favourite glossy posse are — at the private members’ club Loulous, or the Wellington Club.

Over the summer you will find the Prince’s fancy running with a hedonistic crowd in St Tropez.

For several months of the year, she lives in a rented house in Los Angeles with her best friend, Canadian actress Serinda Swan. There, she takes pride in knowing the supermodel Cindy Crawford.

She also mixes with the rock star Kid Rock, who was once briefly married to Pamela Anderson.

Monika is quite shameless about name-dropping the fact that she recently, for instance, bumped into film star Will Smith at Soho House in Hollywood, and recounts proudly that they exchanged one solitary social pleasantry.
Another brazen name-drop was this account she gave in the magazine LA Splash: ‘Every time I’ve been out with George (Clooney), he’s always passionately talked to me about the humanitarian crisis raging in Sudan.’

So how did she come to live this life? Her beauty has been an entrée into a gilded world at odds with her humble background.

Her friend Neven Ciganovic, a celebrity reporter for a Croatian TV station, met Miss Jakisic a decade ago at a photo shoot. He got to know her better when they both lived in LA.

He told me this week: ‘She is a happy girl who is always smiling. She went to all the best parties anywhere in the world.’

Mr Ciganovic was not surprised to learn Ms Jakisic had been spotted on dates with Prince Andrew. He said: ‘It would be nice if Monika marries a royal. It is a typical Cinderella story. They make movies about this kind of thing, but this could be reality.’

Any lasting romance between the two would certainly be a Cinderella story. For Monika has come a long way from her roots as the daughter of two factory workers living in communist Yugoslavia.

Her official website gives her birthdate as December 5, 1979, but British Companies House records and Croatian newspaper reports make it clear she was born in 1977.

Her parents, Zdravko and Marica, married in the mid-Seventies and moved into a block of flats on the outskirts of the city of Osijek. The couple worked hard to support their daughter and their younger son, Marin, and instilled in them the importance of study.

Ms Jakisic’s uncle, Pero Mihaljevic, 62, who lives near Osijek, said: ‘The family strived hard to get a better future.’

Everything changed when Croatia declared its independence from Yugoslavia in June 1991, triggering a bloody war. Osijek — 15 miles from the border with Serbia — found itself on the frontline.

Ms Jakisic and her family moved to London, staying with an aunt who had lived in Britain for about a decade. Monika attended Kingsmead School in Enfield.

‘It was difficult,’ her uncle said. ‘They knew only basic English. ’
Monika thrived in her new home, and began forging a career as a model and actress. She hit the headlines in her native country in July 1997, when she won a competition during the Wimbledon tennis fortnight to find the most beautiful Croatian woman in Britain. Judges included Formula 1 boss Bernie Ecclestone’s Croatian-born wife, Slavica, and among guests was tennis player Goran Ivanisevic.

So could this very colourful woman really become a fixture in Prince Andrew’s life? As she said on her Twitter feed last week following her date with the Duke: ‘Everything is possible.’

Just before we go totally off track, she hasn't tweeted she'll be spending july in Como.  Hasn't even hinted it.

I thought her response to her friend's question might have been a hint.  Her friend asks when they are getting away and if they are going to Greece or perhaps Como.  Monika replies July.

But I am probably reading too much into it.
